Honestly, after my experience here, I'm shocked with their ratings. While in West Ashley, I stopped in here for a quick lunch...and the place was fairly empty. The place was spacious enough, with plenty of tables, but there wasn't much effort made in making the place nice or cozy. The place just struck me as barren, stark, silent (no music at all)...and all-around awkward. The most awkward aspect was how a table in the middle of the restaurant was used as some cash register (??)...and sadly, it struck me as if the place was just intent on making money, but not putting much effort in making the dining experience nice at all. Service was quite awkward as well. When I entered, the 3 wait staff just stood there, staring...without even saying welcome, would you like to sit, or ?? Talk about a rude greeting! I actually had to tell them myself that I was here for lunch, and if I can get a table...as in Hello, People, Wake up??? I just didn't know what to make of their rude behavior. I mean, you don't just stare down a guest coming into your restaurant without a word...as in no greeting, or asking if she/he wants a table. Just rude...that is all! Thai Iced Tea is usually fool-proof...but this one barely had any flavor to it. And OH, when the waitress brought this drink to me, she basically spilled it unto the table. HUH?!? My waiter was a little short on English, and I get that...but again, there was that awkward rudeness. For instance, he did not even respond (with a single word!!!) when I said things...as in WTFLOL. Like when he asked if everything was OK (near the end of my meal), and I said that honestly, the Pad Thai was too wet and soggy, he simply did not respond. Total silence. Riso is just about as authentic as you can get in Charleston. We've been several times but I will say this last time was our least favorite visit. Food was not as spicy and flavorful as usual but the doesn't mean we won't keep going back. The spicy Szechuan chicken was something new we tried and it was delicious. Also tried the limpia for the first time and was slightly disappointing. The hotpot is what we always come back for. You can get spicy or regular. We got half and half this time. I picked up Riso Noodle house takeout the other day and it's just as great as eating in! I still love the udon noodles with your choice of protein. The soups are always a favorite and you can ask about the hot and sour egg drop soup from the secret menu because it's not listed on the regular one. They also have amazing apps like lumpia, gyoza, and so much more. Everything was ready when I arrived and they stacked it neatly into a bag and set me up with some sauces too. I've been eyeing this restaurant for about a month now and today I went in for lunch. I was immediately greeted by two friendly wait staff/hosts and seated. I was the only one in the restaurant, as I timed my visit to miss the lunch rush. The food was delicious! I ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai and Gyoza (pan fried dumplings). I also asked for a little of the hot chili oil on the side. The dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty. The waiters were so friendly and we chatted and watched a funny video on one of their iPhones. We also spoke about traditional Chinese dishes we love. Of course, my waiter being Chinese, knew much more about the various dishes and recommended me to try a few next time I'm visiting my best friend in New York City. If you love Singapore Pancit this is the best place to get it in Charleston. I normally order mine level 2/5 spice and my partner orders theirs level 3 spice. If you get it to eat in-store the flavor generally is consistent throughout. If you order it to-go, be sure to stir the dish before enjoying. We tried Riso today for lunch and we'll definitely be back. I actually found Riso here on Yelp, and my husband and I decided to try it after reading a few other Yelpers reviews and seeing how positive they were. I know I can always trust my Charleston yelp crew, and Riso was no exception. I ordered the pancit noodles with shrimp, while my husband had the beef soup off the authentic Chinese menu (this is on the back of the menu of bubble tea) and wings. I didn't try his food so I can only comment on mine, but the shrimp pancit noodles were delicious. The portion was large and I had leftovers, but best of all... there was enough shrimp in the dish. Many times when I order a shrimp dish out, it comes with 5-6 shrimp, but not at Riso. The hoisin sauce was great with it, but the noodles didn't need any sauce- the natural flavors stood out. My husband also had leftovers. The service was excellent today. We ate in, but a few people had to go orders and we heard the staff call them by name and speak to them, so they remember their customers. Our drinks were kept full and we were offered to-go cups for them. Our server checked on us several times and was very attentive. The food, service, and portions at Riso were excellent. It's in a shopping center, so if you're looking for atmosphere, this may not be your place (think radio music and a TV playing an informercial). Ok, so this place is legit. I'm so glad all the other yelpers out there pointed me in this direction... I feel like I should be fair and mention that I was "eating clean" for the week prior to this visit, and let's be honest, everything not clean tastes better after a week of eating clean. Ha! My husband got one too and he would not stop about how great it was... and he's had the real deal before in Asia. The $3.50 glass is huge, so, just do yourself a favor and try it. At the server's suggestion I got the Taro tapioca bubble tea, it was amazing. This was my favorite part of the whole meal. We also tried the lumpia, which was again pretty good, nothing crazy, but really good. Great flavors here! Then we got Pho and Udon noodles with a $3 side of Singapore Pancit Noodles. I've never had Pho before. The portion was ridiculous huge. I feel like this is something I could eat without feeling super heavy... it comes with a side of bean sprouts, cilantro and basil for you to add into it as you like. I actually thought the Pho was better the second day, maybe because there was a bit more flavor from sitting with the cilantro and basil. My husband didn't like the Pho, but he also doesn't like cilantro and prefers something a bit more heavy than soup. The udon noodles were both of our favorite between the two entrees. The hubs said he thought they tasted a little bit smokey (in a good way). Do yourself a favor and try these too. For whatever reason, ours didn't come out like the fajita plate that Scotty C. mentioned, but nonetheless, they were very good AND... huge plus, I didn't walk away feeling like I just licked a salt block for an hour. Sometimes after Asian food, I feel that way, but not with this dish. We also got a $3 side of Singapore Pancit noodles. Let me tell you, the $3 side is enough to be a full meal, really... and I can put food away. Unfortunately for this dish, they did the noodles but forgot the "Singapore" part of it (the server caught it, I would never have known), and she sent them back. Because they essentially cooked them twice, I think they were a little more dry than they would normally be, but still, good food. All in all, we ended up taking 2 boxes and 2 large soup containers home... I mean, if you are HUNGRY, go here... you can get a ton of good food for cheap! Lastly, I want to mention the service. I didn't see a name tag and I didn't want to scare the server by asking her name. Her English was rough, and I mean, really rough, BUT I would pick her again in a heartbeat, she was SO sweet and smiley. She seemed so happy to be there. Beef was very tender, good soup too although not sure how much of it was instant soup. Noodles looked like the dried ones I buy at Publix. Tasted a bit like mala than beef soup but overall pretty good. Ramen: I did not expect this to be 99% instant ramen. Ok I'm really not a fan of this place but my partner is. I do like the bento box and the firecracker wonton which you cannot get anywhere else nor have I had it at any other place. They are never busy so they compensate by giving each customer that individual attention that most places that are busy cannot do or have the luxury of providing. Very yummy and exactly what I wanted - mostly chicken in and some veggies. Low fat and low carb. Flavor was delicious, though I did add some soy sauce for salt.
