I went here after looking for a local salon for awhile. The salon was very hustle and bustle. This is not the place if you're looking for an extremely relaxing spa day. With that said, this salon has a lot of talent and the stylists know what they are doing. Even when I made the first call to make the appointment, the girl on the phone was super friendly and made feel at ease by telling me who would be doing my hair and that she trusts this girl wholeheartedly. They are very good about sticking to a schedule. They were packed with clients and I was a little bit early but insured me that I would be taken on time. They started right on time. I wanted to love this place I really did. Its been 10 years , yes 10 years since I got my hair cut in a Salon. Why because I have a crazy life and never had normal hours for anywhere to be open and get a cut. So I'd been doing it my self or my friend would in my tiny ass bathroom and we'd be doing all kinds of crazy movements to get a nice cut. I figured I finally have some time let me go get it done in a salon. I spent a few days on yelp reading reviews for hair salons around my area. Riva's was most promising with most reviews and having such a high rating. They have beautiful floor to ceiling glass windows, I was tempted to ask their secret on how they keep them so clean. The salon is white. It is very bright in there, I was tempted to wear my sunglasses while waiting for my appointment. I liked that, if I was getting color it would be a great place to see how it looks in natural light before you leave. The owner Isaak was nice but I didn't really talk with him, however he was dressed the nicest. The ladies who work there wear all black but it is possible to look bad in all black. Like when your outfit is made of all black pieces that are varying degrees of black. I wear a lot of black and I take note to make sure my blacks all match when I am going out in black on black ( this is my personal feeling and it did not influence my star rating). The girl who cut my hair was nice, however I cant remember her name. She was a young girl with curly hair. She was really nice she even curled my hair with the flat iron and it lasted all day. however she used it on my bangs and my hair is kinda on the thin side. They looked very thin after that. I went home and washed them out and did it with the blow dryer they came out okay. Here are my negatives. The next day after I washed my hair even though I try and wash it less often than every day I saw that my hair is extermly uneven, the right side of my head my hair falls to my collar bone, the left side of my hair my hair falls about an inch or so more bellow my collar bone. I know your thinking well how did you not notice this before, well the curls on my right side where tighter than the ones on the left side, so I thought it was just cause it was the curls that where not even. My few long layers are not even either there are more layers on he right side of my head than the left side. There is no defined part of my bangs making it hard to keep them separated when I am trying to blow try them. I often have longer hairs mixed in or not all of my bangs are styled for award. Before I washed my hair I was going to go back and just not have them style my bangs or hair after, but after seeing how poorly it is cut I will not be going back. Maybe I would come here for coloring but not a cut but I highly doubt that even thought it would be convenient. The price was 45 dollars for the wash and cut. Since I had no real experience with hair cut cost I am assuming its okay. It wasn't unreasonable. If I had gotten a better cut I would probably feel better about the price. read more

I've been here four times and always leave the salon feeling and looking great, and that is saying something. I am a African American woman with a lot of 4a curly hair and am usually very hesitant and scared to try new places. If you don't mind the odd look here and there. disclaimer** most of the clientele are not poc. I was tired of having to go all around the world and opted for this salon which is only 10 mins away from me. But alas curly girls this is a safe haven for you. my hair is shaped and cut so nicely everytime. I see Dayra to cut my hair and she gives a brief but thorough consultation and is not scissor happy. I wear my hair in its curly state so having a nice even shape and layers are crucial. I usually go for shorter layers on top and longer on the bottom. The cut grows out well and I always get compliments and I am usually in and out within 2 hours which is normally unheard of. After a botched ombre job at a beauty school, I looked like a cross between chucky and a hot cheeto. Isaac came through and fixed me up. using a dark brown color rinse most of the red is covered and it looks like a subtle brown ombre. The prices are fair for the quality of service a color rinse with additional bowls of color added and blowout came to around $100 before tip. Will definitely be returning. read more

Moved to NYC from the west coast and NEEDED a professional hair cut. I came to this salon for a medium length layered haircut since the salon I originally go to was closed. I was told by friends that this salon was good so I decided to give a shot. The receptionist and hair stylist were nice however the girl who did my hair Darya didn't seem so happy, she just seemed cold and upset that she took me. My hair appointment was at 5 so I guess I caught her at a wrong time, but the first impression wasn't so great from her. While cutting my hair, she would stop midway just to check her phone which isn't professional and just wasting my time. The cut and dry only took like 25 mins, but I would say my haircut was ok, nothing wow about it, even my boyfriend who was waiting for me said he couldn't even tell the difference from before. Not sure if she was in a rush or something, but I don't see the hype about this place. Was looking for a salon with good reviews and came across Riva. I must admit I was very nervous trying a new salon, but I'm so glad I took the risk. A Very cute and quaint salon. Not overwhelming at all which was a big plus. First of all, my appt was at 2:30PM and upon walking in, I was taken to get my hair washed right away. Never happens to where I used to go. Always had to wait. Read all the reviews on who cut hair well, but I let the receptionist book me with who was open. Again, another risk. I was booked with Naomi. She took the time to ask me what I wanted with my hair and she took it from there. She cut my hair and she took her time, really measured my layers to make sure they were even on both side of my face and mostly was very pleasant. He was good and precise, did exactly what i asked but a little bit slow. Second time was a couple days ago. I read all r good things ppl said here about Dayra so I booked an appointment with her. This is a fairly new salon on Francis Lewis Blvd. I was calling around the neighborhood salons to get a price to have my hair curled for a special event. They were the best priced option within my 2 mile radius in Fresh Meadows. Riva was charging $25 and other places were $40+. I spoke with Issac to make my appointment. He was very professional and helpful. Honestly, simple things like speaking clearly with a friendly voice makes such a good first impression of the kind of customer service you can expect. I spoke with a few other salons and some people were just rude. Some spoke with such heavy accents I wasn't sure I had called the right number. The salon is newly built and looks very clean and modern. The front is all glass and interior is white. Since i had never been to the salon before I decided to just stop in the day before to make sure the place would be legit since it was an important event I was getting my hair done for. Again, Issac was the one who greeted me and was very helpful in having one of the stylists talk to me about what I wanted to do. Samantha was the one who did my hair. I asked for large curls with some volume. The curls came out well but my hair lost any oomph from all the hairspray. I did get a lot of compliments that day and the curls lasted all day so I can't complain too much. But i do have to minus one star for the fact that she arrived almost 10 mins late for the appointment and didn't apologize. She didn't make much conversation during the process but it was 9am so I understand if some people aren't really chatty in the morning which was fine. Although a bit of enthusiasm or energy could have improved my experience a little more. I would consider going back to get my hair cut with Issac next time. The salon is very pretty and chic. I went in with an appt for wash, cut and blow. The owner,Isaak, is amazing! He convinced me to get my roots touched up and gave me a brand new color to compliment my skin. I really enjoyed the consultation and color he gave me. So why am i giving them a 3?? Well then i was told Jenice would finish me up. I have a sensitive scalp but I've learn to deal with pain,however, this woman MAN HANDLED my head. The torture didn't end there. I asked her to cut it into a medium bob and she had no idea what i was talking about until i showed her a couple of pics. She ended up making the back longer then the front! As shes doing the top of my head, she asked me who had cut my bangs, i said another salon--- this woman as the nerve to tell me " oh it looks like you did them yourself". I was done furious at that point. I just wanted to get it over with and leave. As I'm paying, the owner noticed i wasn't happy and asked why but i didn't feel the need to explain myself bc i knew i would blow up!!! I have recieved the most compliments on my hair color since she has been doing it. Its light, natural and just perfect. She really knows what shes doing and will tell you if you really need a whole head of highlights or half a head. I dont feel like she just sees me as a dollar sign where some other places do. She really works with you. As for my hair cut, Dayra does a great job. Shes really nice and makes sure your happy with the cut and doing whats right to keep your hair healthy.
