I was really disappointed by my experience at Jack Stack. We arrived for a Father's Day dinner with a reservation for four adults, and I was immediately scolded by the hostesses because I hadn't included my 5-month-old baby in the reservation count. I completely understand that restaurants need an accurate headcount for seating purposes, but the way it was communicated was unnecessarily rude and lacked any empathy. I'm 5 months postpartum, running on very little sleep, pumping, and simply trying to get out of the house to celebrate Father's Day with my family. Instead of kindly explaining their policy, I felt reprimanded and embarrassed from the moment we walked in. A little kindness and understanding would have gone a long way. Families with young children are already juggling a lot, and while I respect the restaurant's procedures, the customer service at the host stand left me feeling upset and unwelcome before our meal even began. My husband and I were in the area so we decided to try out this location. When we first walked in, there were two waitresses, leaning against the wall facing the entrance and the podium where the host/hostess usually stands. I was in front of my husband was behind me, we walked in and one of the waitresses gives us a totally dirty look and rolls her eyes and walks off, and the other one gives us a dirty look as well and walks off and leaves us standing there. I turn around and said to my husband at the same time he says to me, "What the heck! Maybe this was a bad choice!" Right after that another server walks up and smiles and asked us if someone had gotten our information and that at that point, the hostess comes up to get our information. The hostess asked if we had reservations and we said no. Then the manager was walking by and was friendly and greeted us. The hostess set us in a room towards the back of the building, which was fine with us because it was nice and quiet and we were the only ones back there. I could tell another party was going to be sat back there because there was a larger table with a lot of menus that they were preparing. Our waitress was an excellent server with a great attitude which helped make up for the two other servers that were absolutely awful and should not be in customer service whatsoever!! Another comment about their reaction is that my husband is black and I am white, and these two servers don't even know us. We walked in smiling, so there was no reason for them to do that. Because I was coming also to review this location I do not speak to the manager at that time because I wanted to see how the rest of the dinner played out and I was planning to include this information in my review. Typically, we would immediately asked to speak to the manager and handle the situation right then and there if I was not there to review the restaurant. The server asked if we had any questions about the menu which we did and my husband asked about the lamb ribs and she asked if he would like to try a sample and she brought out one rib sample, which I thought was nice. He did not end up ordering it because he said it was quite salty. We ended up ordering a choice of two or three meats on their menu. We both had two choices of spare ribs and also we both ordered the potato salad and coleslaw, and we asked for the sweeter sauce instead of the traditional. The meal was very good. We loved their potato salad, especially. The coleslaw was nice and creamy and well flavored. There were no dry spare ribs, which was a plus. I'm not a fan of their sauce as much as other barbecue places, but the whole overall meal was still good. The restaurant was clean in general. Our table did have a few crumbs on it and two dead flies on the windowsill next to us. But the rest of the place looked clean. I would say the only reason I gave it a four is because of the initial terrible "greeting" we had with the two waitresses. We are not typically in this area, but if we were, I think that experience would give us pause about coming back. If that did not happen, we would likely go back. Also, upon being seated, the waitress told us there was a 20% gratuity added because of the World Cup. When I looked at the ticket, it says surcharge and not gratuity but in another area it states that it's for the hospitality team and if anyone would like to add more on the tip line of the ticket, it is appreciated, but not necessary. I typically always tip 20% or more, and I added more because of the exceptional service of our waitress. read more

There are many locations but the Martin City one is the best; it has friendly servers and great atmosphere! Landon was our server and honestly, he made our entire experience a "20"! He was fun, full of smiles, eager to please and an absolute pleasure! My ribs fell off the bones, the beans were full of flavor, my friends salmon salad was perfection and my husband's brisket sandwich was perfect. PLUS since it was my birthday, I received a free dessert - the crème brûlée was toasted to perfection! All in all, it was the most satisfying meal I could have had for my birthday. This is my favorite BBQ place so far. I would highly recommend anyone visiting the KC area to give it a try. The service is one of a kind. I was told that they were running out of beef burnt ends, but was provided with a taste of the sausage burnt ends, which I liked. I was a party of one and they have a 20% service charge for dining Inn. This is happening while the World Cup is playing in town. The restaurant did not tell me anything about the added charges. I did find a very small sign that they had at the front desk. The hostess commented that they do not have to say anything about the added service charge. UPDATE - Always a great experience at a place that's been here forever. Got there at 11am, which is their opening time, because we had a tight schedule and by 11:30am most of the tables around us were full. Ordered the 3 jumbo fried mushrooms (amazing!) although it seemed line the horseradish sauce was cut with some mayo, or another sauce. Needs the get back the kick. We shared the Kansas City Combo, pick 3 with pork burnt ends, bone-in chicken, and the pork spare ribs. Everything was great although the food temperature could have been higher. So this isn't the Jack Stack old dark shack that I remember visiting years ago when I lived in Kansas City. It is very bright and vibrant now, down right fancy. Me amd my friends met up for Happy Hour last Monday. We sat at the bar and Angel was our bartender. She was very informative about menu options and drink selections. Two of us had margaritas and the other only had soda! The ribs were a hit 5 out of 5 and Angel wasn't skimpy on the Tequila in the drinks. The bathrooms were clean and there is ample parking on-site. This place is a Kansas City must try place, no which location you've gone to, if a person has lived in the local area for at least a year then they've been to one of the multiple restaurants at least once. I was born and raised in Kansas City area and Jack Stack has always been a go to place for me for multiple of reasons. I've been there for her family gatherings, post funeral bites, date night, my own wedding, rehearsal dinner, and I've been to multiple social events for business and pleasure when Jack Stack has been catering. I won't lie about the fact that it's one of the pricey barbecue places in Kansas City but it's always highly recommended and there's always people with the doors open no matter the time of day. The staff is always friendly and willing to make the customer happy. The food is always drooling delicious and at times it's difficult for me to not eat my entire meal in one sitting. Luckily they are gluten-free friendly, which my mom can attest since it's one of the few places she can confidently go without getting sick due to her extreme celiacs. I always would recommend the burnt ends, brisket, chicken, and turkey... I can't give any input of pork products due to my dietary restrictions, but I know when I'm with others it's generally an item that's ordered off the menu. Even though I've never tried bloody Mary's I do know their bloody Mary's look delicious but I dying to try. The atmosphere is always business casual so I don't recommend coming in T-shirt and sports shorts. There's always a statue of a copper or iron bull on the exterior building so you'll never be mistaken. As always, this is a must try, Kansas City special, and barbecue place that needs to be on someone's bucket list while visiting or living in the area. read more

Always love coming here! We ordered some food to go to take to our hotel after an 8 hour road trip. We ordered the KC Combo 3 meat dinner with brisket, pulled pork and pork burnt ends. All of the meats were AMAZING! They had an amazing Smokey flavor and lots of seasoning flavor as well. The brisket melted in your mouth. We ordered a side of cole slaw, potato salad and a loaded baked potato. Also all AMAZING! My boyfriend ate every last bit of the Cole slaw. The loaded baked potato came with butter, cheese, bacon and sour cream. The potato salad was a tad on the sweet side which I personally love! This was my first experience with Missouri BBQ. After traveling over 4 states I was hungry. I did travel by plane but I the whole flight I was getting all worked up to try Kansas City BBQ. Once inside it looked very nice and clean. Also, I noticed it wasn't too busy. This worried me as I thought we were possibly trying a bad BBQ place. We ordered so much food. Trying "Burnt Ends", ribs and a few other kinds of meat. Everything tasted great and the portions were large. But the best was when we were explained about how all BBQ is similar in Missouri, what separates the BBQ places is the sides. We then ordered some sides when it was time for dessert and they also did not disappoint. For the rest of our trip we always ordered extra sides. Missouri is a dangerous place for your waist line. The burnt ends here are fantastic. The sausage is a major letdown. The sliced brisket is dreadfully awful. Why is it so thin and dry? The tiny portion of BBQ sauce you provide with your plates isn't nearly enough moisture to make your dry brisket palatable. Perhaps I lived in Texas too long, but having grown up in the KC area and regularly eating at Jack Stack in Martin City in my youth, I remember their brisket being better than this. What a letdown. Also, I remember people back home having better manners, but I found our server and the service to be somewhat rude and very inattentive. My family likes to go here often as we enjoy the food. If you go during busy hours, it is so loud and everyone is trying to shout over each other, you can barely hear the person next to you. Some bad acoustics (or no acoustics). We went last on my bday (April 28th). We were a party of 7 and went during lunch time (12:30pm). We didn't have to wait too long fortunately... maybe 10-15 minutes. I specifically wanted to go because they have one of my favorite salads, the Southwestern Chicken salad. I get there to find out that they no longer make it. I was so sad and bummed out. What a shitty bday present! We like to get the "Cue for Two" and the Burnt End Combo is always tasty. The Honey-Glazed Baby Back Ribs is also tasty. The baked beans and coleslaw sides are very good. The sandwiches are pretty good. One of us didn't get a refill on their drink while the rest of us did. One of us asked for fries but got baked beans instead... and then asked for a side of fries and never got it. I would definitely recommend this place but with a warning about possible loudness and lack of attention/detail from servers (possibly 'cause they can't hear you when you ask them for something or they're too overwhelmed during busy hours). read more

We had one meal that had flies shut into the to go container, missing sides for baked potatoes, and we ordered meat by the pound and received less meat than we paid for. Food: 9/10 and yes I'm bias because Memphis has the BEST barbecue but KC is def a close second. This food was delicious!!! The wings were seasoned so well and grilled perfectly! The broccoli was my absolute favorite and cooked soft but not mushy with a slight crunch just how I like it. The drinks were good also. We all enjoyed our food and the portions were more than enough! Very sad to report that after eating Jack Stack for 35+ years, I can no longer hold it at the king spot. This location has not been the same since the remodel. Very inconsistent now, with a floor so low that I actually threw away one of my burnt ends, didn't finish my beans or cheesy corn on last visit. I reached out to JS as a way to see if they cared, to keep me from walking away for a long while. HQ said they fwd my message to the location, but nobody reached out. I see this as a red flag that there's no reason to believe a plan is in place to turn the place around. We got lucky that it was a slow day for lunch and there were open tables out on the patio. As we arrived the hostess saw that 2 of us had mobility problems, and she shuffled us onto the patio quickly and let us choose our table. Our server Bri came right over, took our drink orders and came back quickly with drinks to get our food order. The food came out quickly and was really good, as usual. In one of her many trips to refill our drinks she overheard me say that the BE were dry and soon the kitchen manager brought out very fresh hot ones. The brisket served was slightly better than wafer thickness, never seen such a thin serving. Being from Houston, I've ordered brisket before, expected better, never this thin and cool. An absolute staple when it comes to Kansas City barbecue. All of the food is amazing. As good as the meats are, Jackstack consistently delivers with the best sides in town. The interior provides a refined Midwestern restaurant, and the staff clearly loves their customers and their meals. We often get takeout or cater from here if lots of people are in town.
