Transmission in my van needed replaced (about 20 months ago). My mechanic got a rebuilt from River City. Installed it, and it would not shift properly. Scott did drive 260 miles to make it right. When my work vehicle needed a new transmission (April 22), we went back to River City. It lasted all of 15,000 miles. (Aug 22) 12 month/12K mile warranty, so I had already exceeded it. I drive a lot of miles each month (3K+/'month); these are 90% highway miles with the cruise set at 70. The torque converter started not locking up (overdrive). Was given a reason that I had a faulty cooling system. My mechanic found nothing wrong with the cooling system. I made two trips to Portland (8 hrs round trip) -- one to drop off my transmission and then pick up the repaired one. My mechanic installed the repaired one, and it was still doing the exact same thing. He said his employee couldn't remember if he replaced some parts. He shipped the parts to my mechanic to repair. My mechanic is out his time to pull and reinstall the "repaired" transmission and replace the parts. He did give me a break on the price to fix the transmission. It was out of warranty, so that's great, but if it didn't get repaired, it's really not a deal. 2 transmissions didn't work out of the box, the 3rd one 3 months with minimal miles. Do yourself a favor and get your transmission from someone else. read more

$500 of shit..Took 2 weeks to diagnose our transmission irregularities..and an overdrive issue...they called a couple times to approve more time. We thought good faith ok, everything is good, it's getting done.. Was thinking it was getting done, mason called said it's ready, running good, it ran like shit and he fixed a problem we didn't even ask for and with used parts he drummed up. I heard some grinding noise, talked my mechanic and he asked me to visit river city. Called, the lady who answered the phone was so awesome... told me that they are very busy, but can squeeze me in right after the guys come back from much. So I showed up, the mechanic took my car for a spin. 15 mins later, he came and told me that there is nothing wrong with my transmission. Everything is working fine as a 252k miles car should drive. He never tried to squeeze a dime out of me, gave me honest feedback. That's one thing I miss in today's auto mechanic industry. " HONESTY " !! Boyfriend had his transmission rebuilt by them and not correctly either he paid almost $3000. When he got it back the first time he would have to put it in neutral to start it his dash speedometer would short out which it never did before he took it there and they said they would fix it and never did. Few weeks later his transfer case went out. Took it back to them they had him get a used transfer case, they installed it. Had it back not even a week when the starter fell out, transmission cracked and transfer case is screwed again too. When I called to see if they were gonna honor the warranty they refused saying I was a bi*** for the very first time we brought the truck in to them, the funny thing is I didn't deal with them until they kept blowing him off about getting it back the first time. Only reason we asked them to do the work the second time and to honor it was because the Warranty should have covered it all. So all in all almost $4000 dollars paid to them, they were rude and didn't fix their screw ups or honor the warranty...trucks still broke down where it died. Don't go here. read more

My second generation '78 Toyota Celica Liftback has been in the shop at River City Transmission on two occasions, as it is in-need of having the worn-out drive-train parts replaced, in both clutch assembly and rear wheel bearings. River City did this and I am very satisfied with the results. Both of the repair invoices were LESS than the (approximate) quote. Not only was the cost below the quote, Scott had found the fix for the "bad noise" wasn't what they had imagined it was, so by fixing only what needed fixing, he saved me a lot of money. They could have charged me for the work quoted and then not done it, but they didn't. I would not have known the difference. Very honest and straight-ahead bunch of guys at River City. Back again to have Scott repair accident damage from my skidding on wet pavement, hitting a curb sideways, which broke the rear suspension mounts away from the unibody and pushed the entire rear axle off-center by more than 2 inches. After visiting 4 other body shops, no one wanted to attempt to repair the mounts and get the rear axle re-aligned. dthey all said the car was "totaled". But River City took-on the job, which no one else would touch, and I'm very pleased that they agreed to do it. Thus, I am assured the suspension components are correctly installed and any other unseen damage has been repaired. Although this was not "transmission work", Scott took the job anyway. These guys are "real" professional technicians who will fix your car right the first time. These guys will make you drive home happy. read more

This happened about 2 and a half years ago, but I'm just now finding a place to share my review. AVOID THIS SHOP. I took my 03 Ford Focus in to get the clutch changed, that's it. Simple clutch change. I got my car back a bit late after they closed, (no big deal), and when I started it up, I had a dashboard full of flashing lights. I took it back on MONDAY, because they gave it to me FRIDAY night, and they were reluctant to take it back. After I finally got them to take it back in, they have it for another 2 days, and I pick it up. This time, the car is even SLOWER and ROUGHER. I plug a code reader in, I had misfires in ALL FOUR CYLINDERS. I don't know how they did I, but they destroyed my ENGINE on a CLUTCH JOB??? I had them take it back in one more time, and history repeated itself of course. They basically didn't do a thing the third time it came in. Upon my final time picking it up, I had called them again to get it taken in for a FOURTH time, and they refused. That was the end of it. I paid around $900 for them to destroy my car and leave me without a way to work for about 4 weeks. AVOID THIS PLACE! NO ONE HERE KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING read more

A few months back I took my new (used) truck to Larry's Transmissions on Foster Rd. He had it 10 minutes and said I needed a rebuilt tranny for $3000. I took my truck to Scott at River City Transmission and after 5 minutes he said all I needed was to replace a broken rear U joint for under $200.00. The truck runs perfect. Today Scott replaced the factory trans oil cooler with one 4 times the the size of the factory to eliminate an overheating problem. Cost? Just what he estimated - $250.00. I brought my 1994 Nissan truck to this shop thinking they are great based on their yelp reviews. Well sadly I was very wrong. I needed my 5 speed manual trans rebuilt and a new clutch. They told me 3 to 5 days to do the work and they could get it right in. Well I dropped my truck off at river city and their it sat. It sat for 3 weeks and these people never once called me. I always called them once a week and once a week they told me it will soon be in the shop and get tor apart. Well at the end of the 3rd week I didn't call. I just went down to river city and there was my truck just parked outside with all the other junk cars he's got piled up there. So I went in the office and told them I was there to pic up my truck. They quickly moved other cars and then handed me my keys and said sorry. Just like that. No explanation or nothing. I drove my truck with bad trans two blocks down the street and call LARRY MORTANS TRANSMISSION in Oregon city. He told me not to drive the truck another block. He owns his own tow truck and I'll come get my truck."FOR FREE". 30 minutes later my truck was on its way to Larry's shop. 5 days after Larry got my truck he called me and told me my truck was ready for pic up. He rebuilt my tranny and put a new clutch in. My truck drives like brand new. If you need a trans flush or easy service the river city is your shop. If you need mayor professional repair or rebuild I would direct you to Larry Morton's shop in Oregon city. He's been doing it for over 40yrs. He gets it done. And done right. read more

4-15-2019 I just concluded a phone interview with "River" concerning the repair of my turbo 400 transmission and was told that with all the parts including a new converter my expected cost would be $800.00 and was more than satisfied. I then looked at the reviews and saw Don H's remarks #5 when he spoke of his experience and a quoted price over the phone which "River" honored; I was impressed and because of the testimonial I am taking my truck to "River" for repair. A very-knowledgeable person with impressive transmission experience. Also went over to the shop first, to check it out and talk to the technicians. Great group of professional guys. They had my (old) car 2 days and found the big problem was a bad rear wheel bearing. Nothing amiss with the transmission or the differential. Very honest and fair with their customers. They could have charged me hundreds of $$, doing a bogus repair on something which didn't need repairing. But, they didn't! RCT is the place to bring your weird transmission issues. Complementary diagnosis, usually same day. Talk about nice people, Scott is the most down to earth guy with impeccable listening skills. Within 5 mins he had a prelim diagnosis, and was willing to discuss the issues he observed plus your options for repair. Reads the codes, test drives, looks for rebuilt transmissions or new depending on your budget. Heck, he even entertained my suggestion to fix my transmission (obviously this takes lots of hours of work pulling it out and bench work to take it all apart). Transmission issues will always take plenty of hours of labor, and they still had the lowest quote. If you need a recommendation for Transmission work, look no further. read more

Scott was great. So great we brought two vehicles to him to repair. We had one vehicle that needed a new viscous coupler - we contacted 3 guys for this one all quoted above $1800. One even kept the car for a week just trying to get prices for parts and came back with a range going up to $3000. Scott looked up the parts and provided an estimate on the spot. Vehicle was fixed within a week and even came in under $1800; His service style is relaxed and straight to the problem at hand, and willingly gave us a lift after dropping off the vehicle. After sourcing out the rebuild of a 4R75E out of a customers 08 E350 Super Duty and receiving the most ridiculous and childish response to my very valid concerns I'll never be taking anything back to Scott. This would be the 3rd transmission rebuild I outsourced to them and never would I have expected the sort of treatment I endured. I provided a torque converter for the rebuild and was assured I would receive a discount for the provided part. Upon receiving the invoice there was no discount and a short exchange ensued of Scott trying to argue about whether he thought it was fair for a discount to be applied because "... we charge flat rate..." and "...it was pretty fucked up in there." The discount was eventually applied and everything was copacetic again. Once the transmission was installed and brought up to pressure however a significant leak presented itself from the of the transmission; a whole gasket was completely missing. 4qts of trans fluid onto the floor and even more wasted once the driveshaft and everything else pertinent to the repair was removed. Scott's solution? He had me drive down to the shop to get the gasket and install it myself. Me? Totally fine with that. Shit happens, but I'm running a business here and now I've got labor that was already supposed to be done added onto my schedule. Customer is now without a van for even longer and I've got to reschedule other customers to pick up Scott's slack. I give him a call and try to explain the situation to him like a sensible and mature adult. His response was "...get over it. Shit happens... tough shit." In the blink of an eye a totally reasonable, fully grown man was acting like a high schooler talking to their younger sibling. Needless to say the charges are currently being disputed and Scott is going to feel pretty silly when he's standing in court considering this all could have been solved in the same amount of time it took him to show himself to be the petulant little child that he is. read more

Last spring my 88 Toyota died. It needed a new or a rebuilt transmission. My friends all advised junking it. However, I love my car and can't afford another. So, I phoned 25 different shops, including one that said they would beat any price. They were all too expensive by far. Then I phoned River City Transmissions. The owner,Scott, is experienced, intelligent, a good communicator on the phone, sincere, and offered a good warrenty. He would rebuild the transmission himself. Scott's price was 100s of dollars under what every other shop offered. I was so happy because I would not have to junk my car! I phoned the people who said they will beat any price, and.... they would not beat what Scott offered! They said that was the lowest price they had heard of. Scott did the job well, and my car came back from the dead. It runs great! It has lots of pep, it goes up hills fast and smoothly, and it gets better gas mileage than it did before the rebuild. When I recently observed a couple of drops of transmission fluid dripping, Scott told me he is willing to fix it under the warrenty. I took my 4l60e to Scott and he got it back to me very quick and for decent price. well a month later the thing was leaking everywhere while I was on a long trip he told me to keep buying transmission fluid and drive it home.... 2 gallons later (with no reimbursement) when I got it to his shop he fixed it and told me it was a defective part. what kind of parts is he using if they are going to be defective? Now it has been 3000 miles on this transmission and the pump went out, the warranty is over and I'm stuck.... ? Why is it only 3000 miles and it has failed me? I just moved to Portland and cold called this shop when my transmission died on my Hyundai. Scott was able to find a used transmission from another car and replace the whole thing for $1400 including labor with a 6 month warranty. Another shop wanted $2500 to rebuild and install one. He then serviced the transmission on our Mercedes R350 and saved us $150 compared to the dealer. He is honest and I totally trust him to give great service at a very fair price.
