Not as good as we remember. My wife and I grew up in NJ, not far from RED, and ate there a lot. It was always one of THE go to diners, especially late at night. Ever since they renovated, it's never quite been the same. After have been away for a long time, we recently had a late lunch and can't say we left feeling good about the food. I had a Pizza Burger, something that seems to baffle Midwest restaurants. The patty was seasoned ok and the bun held up well, but the sauce was underwhelming and the cheese not very flavorful, and not enough of either. The fries were still very good. My wife had the Shrimp Salad sandwich on a Kaiser roll. As expected, it was overflowing with shrimp, but it was bland. The shrimp had little flavor, and even with all the mayo, the salad itself had little flavor. I guess nothing stays the same forever. Sigh. read more

The River Edge Diner 516 Kinderkamack Rd. River Edge, NJ 07661 I usually order breakfast at this diner and it is always satisfying; I decided to explore a completely different entrée. This meal includes a bowl with soup. Although I don't usually eat this starter with my CP dinner, I still enjoyed it. It was my favorite part of the experience. The two cutlets were large in size, but they were on the thicker, chewier side. The tomato sauce was too watery and it lacked flavor. When I next return to this location, I plan on sticking to their breakfast options and will avoid the CP. read more

When our Mother's Day brunch plans fell through we wound up here. We called before going to make sure the wait wasn't too long. On the phone I was told 15-20 minutes and no wait for outside. We saw that all outside tables were empty when we drove by. The tables were still empty when we got to the diner yet we still had to wait 15-20 minutes. Everyone that checked in with the hostess was told 15-20 minutes. I'm pretty sure it took longer than 20 minutes then we were finally seated outside. This was great for my nephews. One just watched the cars go by the whole time. I had the Greek frappe. Still not sure how this drink is made. The waitress gave conflicting information of how it was made (not sure if it's espresso or instant coffee). It was good though as an iced coffee and one that's flavor was good enough I didn't need any sweetener. For my meal I had the breakfast quesadilla which comes with home fries. Couldn't finish it! The bacon in the quesadillas was nicely cooked. My sister got the eggs Benedict; those looked a little funky. The hollandaise sauce was bright yellow, never seen it look like that! My nephews got sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches. The sausages were round sausages sliced in half; typically a flat sausage is what you'd expect. Overall everyone was satisfied with their meals. I stopped by the River Edge Diner & Restaurant for breakfast around 9AM on a Sunday. The place seemed pretty busy but there's plenty of seating so my party of 2 was seated right away. A waiter came to take our drink almost immediately after we sat down. My girlfriend and I both opted for black coffee but I went with decaf since I was just coming off the night shift. I thought the coffee was good, but I'm not exactly a coffee snob. If it's hot and strong that's good enough for me. For our entrees I went with the Breakfast Skillet and my girlfriend ordered the Cannoli French Toast. She almost never finishes her food so I knew I'd be having the French Toast as well. The food came out within a few minutes and it looked delicious. Tasted delicious too. The Breakfast Skillet was served in a hot skillet (of course). Bacon, sausage, eggs, and potatoes all smothered in cheese? How could you go wrong? I ordered the eggs over-easy and it was hard to tell under all the cheese but they were perfectly cooked. The bacon was cooked to my liking as well. Hot take, but I consider bacon to be an overrated breakfast meat. I'll take sausage over bacon any day. However, when I do have bacon I prefer it to not be cooked to a crisp. I want my bacon to have some chew to it and it was the right amount of chewy for me. I enjoyed the sausage as well. They were large and flavorful without being overly salty as sausage tends to be at times. The potatoes were standard home fries but they served as a good base for the cheesy, eggy, meaty goodness set atop it. The side of white toast allowed me to make my own impromptu sandwich with my skillet. I enjoyed my meal very much. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of cannolis. They're very hit or miss to me. This Cannoli French Toast fortunately landed on the 'hit' side of things. The cannoli cream didn't overpower the french toast flavor and the dish wasn't sickeningly sweet even when I added some syrup on top. I wish they'd add some crushed up cannoli shells or something for some more crunch. The place is clean and the service was quick and attentive. They're on the pricier side as far as diners go but nothing crazy. All-in-all it was an above average diner experience. I'd come back. read more

Don't get me wrong, I think River Edge Diner as a whole is good (I've been there for breakfast). However, I recently tried their Oreo Cake and was heavily disappointed. Instead of a sweet, creamy bite, I was greeted by a punch of chemical taste (which I presume was either alcohol or unidentifiable ingredient) followed by a horrible, expired aftertaste. Though I know there are certain cakes that are complemented well by alcohol, this was not one of them. I think it would have been nice to know if they used alcohol (which I can be wrong, but then I wouldn't know how to make sense of the pungent chemical taste). Their other desserts looked delicious, but I don't know if I can bring myself to try the other desserts after this initial bad experience. If possible, I would give a 0/5 for just the Oreo Cake. read more

Since NJ and NY are known for their diners, we had to go here. Of course, the menu had pages of options that never seemed to end! So choosing something was not easy! We sat outside and enjoyed a shrimp salad platter with coleslaw, tomatoes and cucumbers. as well as a pastrami with cheese and fries. The waiter was attentive and we were happy with all. Give it a whirl. Ample parking as well. Located on Kinderkamack Road- the only issue were the cars that were drag racing down the street! I'm not sure what the point of this was! We decided to drop in to the River Edge Diner for lunch and never again will we do that. It has really gone downhill as i ordered a cheeseburger and got some kind of meat. I asked for medium and it came precooked well done. Tasteless. I sent it back and asked for a fresh one and got back a similar piece of dreck. I had a few bites then cried uncle. Insult to injury they charged $3.75 for fries and $1.00 for tomato. So disappointed as we don't get out much and this was to be a treat. I just had breakfast at this Diner with my husband and let me tell you that for a diner this place is Top Tier in Bergen County leaving Suburban, Sawyer, and Elmwood Park Diner in the dust. I NEVER TAKE MY LEFTOVERS HOME! And this time as I ordered the cinnamon swirl pancakes, I asked for a take away box for the very first time, Our waiter was very polite and well mannered, the bus girl even asked if we needed anything extra. Popped in for a quick bite on Friday around 5:30. Now I have been here for breakfast and the food has been great. This was our first time trying it out for dinner. 1. Calamari-yeah yeah I know-who orders calamari at a diner right? But we usually get it at a few of our favs and it's always pretty good. Well... big fail here. Not fresh, were rubbery and just not worth it in my opinion. Do not recommend the calamari! 2. Caesar salad-honestly just meh. It was abundant with lots of chicken, but the chicken was super dry, had a frozen bland taste to it and well, I didn't even want to eat it. :( the plus was that it was served with pita which was good and a nice surprise-but then again, who can get pita wrong? 3. Cheesesteak-it was OK. Not the best but not the worst. 4. Now the only reason I would give this place 5 stars-the server Loretta. BOY WAS SHE JUST FABULOUS!! This chick was sweet, quick, sassy, attentive and not was she good! Loreto is for sure a keeper and I will return just to see her again!! We got a little bit of everything. The waffles with the cake on top was INSANE, but of course the kids loved it. The dessert from the case was good. But I would suggest taking it to go. In a word...awful. Sure there's pretty holiday decor but that's where this ends. Guest 1: Ordered eggs Benedict, a tea and a gingerale. Guest 2: hungry man breakfast Guest 3, Belgium waffle, 3 eggs over easy, bacon, coke. As guest one, tea was tepid at go, how that's even possible is beyond me. Glass for gingerale is...cloudy. Eggs Benedict visually was entirely unappealing with neon mustard tone hollandaise, the eggs were entirely over cooked like hard boiled just not in a shell and the home fries were pale, pasty, unseasoned and cold. Sent back once. Asked for a re fire and for the home fries to be well done. Guest 2 enjoyed their food. Guest 3 had some VERY under eggs, but ate them. Home fries were also under and cold. Plate 2 of Benedict comes 25 minutes later. Still gross looking and neon but I'm starving and the 2 others are almost done. Eggs at least look plump...cuts into one...entirely over cooked worse than the first plate. And the home fries were identically pale, at this point I give up and just take a bite only to know this wasn't even re fired, the English muffin is so soggy I wouldn't call it soggy I would call it wet sponge. Politely I just asked the waitress to take it off the check as at this point everyone else Is done and has been and I can't consciously ask them to wait another 25 minutes even though the restaurant is now mostly empty. I excuse myself to the ladies room which is freezing...2 stalls. Stall one handicap is empty, I usually don't use them bc I am able bodied but I'm freezing and the place is empty....the door doesn't latch to close the door doesn't lock. Ok then. Wait for second stall, the girl has to shoulder the door to get it open...ok fine, use restroom...the door is now stuck. Stuck stuck. I understand why she used her shoulder. As I'm walking out I said audibly next to the manager this was the absolute worst diner experience, he looks up, and looks right back down. What an absolute waste read more

After an afternoon at the Bergen County Zoo, this is a great local diner in the area to grab an early dinner. The diner is very nice, modern, and clean. It's quite big, with two huge sitting areas, booths on one side of the diner, and tables closer to the main entrances. Our waitress was very friendly, and took our order quickly and promptly. Food was brought out within 5 minutes or so. Very fast service for a larger party. Everyone enjoyed their orders. The food I ordered was delicious, and all the kids really enjoyed their food as well, especially since they got to order from the kids "Super-Hero menu". For a diner, it wasn't loud. We got sat in the rear in a corner and we were probably the loudest people there, but that's normal given there were 5 kids together. Even though we apologized several times for the noise, the other patrones didn't mind, and were actually very nice about it. All the staff were nice as well. Would definitely go back. read more

Very average diner. I don't think I would trust them with dinner. I've been here for breakfast a few times and I don't think I'll return. On my latest visit my waitress was not good at all. She got my order completely wrong and tried to blame me for ordering the wrong thing. So I had to watch my family eat while they made my dish over again. Then she forgot an order we put in. Then when I asked for said order, she charged us twice for it. On top of the bad waitress the food was sub par. It's all about the home fries in Jersey, and their home fries suck. Dry and no flavor. Entering during peak lunch time, my guests and I were met with a wonderfully kind hostess, who not only immediately sat us, but prioritized our request to sit at a booth. Surrounded by light chatter among pleased guests on a Saturday afternoon, delicious food, and conversation were easy to come by. Renovated a few years prior, the RED not only maintained the bright, modernized environment, but made a clear effort to keep the place clean, as not a speck was left on the table. After given a few minutes to settle in, and glance briskly at the immense menu, which can accommodate for any special diet, the waiter's presence and personality lit up the room, as a smile spawned and multiple giggles escaped mine and my guest's mouth during every encounter with him. It was blatantly apparent that the waiter's main priority was to bring comfort and happiness to every table - which he did with ease; this wonderful environment made time pass quickly, and our hungry bellies settle, as none of us felt the wait for food was overwhelmingly lengthy. I'm almost 50 and this is my second review of my life.... Stay away from this place!! Ordered scrambled egg with cheese and sausage and a plain hamburger. Cook shredded burger while cooking it probably to get it done quick. When lifting bun all you see are pieces of burger put back together. Home fries were just sliced boiled potato which were dry and no onion or peppers. Waitress dropped off food and never came back to check in or give a coffee refill. No water brought to table. Went for breakfast on Saturday morning as we've done many times before. Never a wait and the food is consistently good. Expansive menu and we've always been satisfied with the food quality and the portions. On this trip we found that as soon as we walked in the gentleman that seated us was very rude and we were seated in front of where the bussers were loudly dropping dirty dishes, startling each time. Our waitress was rude as well but as expected, the food was good. It should be though because the bill came to almost $50 for two people for breakfast. It turns out that if you don't choose one of the omelettes on the menu and select what you want, the individual omelette with the same ingredients as the others (just in different sequence) will cost you over $20. Before we were finished eating, and while my drink was empty, the check was left on the table. Then, before the dirty dishes were even picked up, the same, rude guy that seated us came to the table and asked if we needed anything else. We had JUST FINISHED eating. I replied no but he continued to stand over us. I said don't worry, we will leave in a minute and he walked away without saying anything. Annoyed, I decided we could continue our conversation outside and we both started to get up. The waitress then came over and physically blocked me from exiting the booth because she needed the hot sauce for another table. She could have waited a second and I would have been out of the way. No excuse me, or request for me to just hand it to her. Because it felt like there was a need to clear our table, it was surprising that there was no line of people waiting for tables, and we had to wait for several minutes for the same rude man to come to the register and take my money. With tip, $62 for two people for breakfast. He took care of the business and I paid with my credit card. Not even a word from the rude guy. Never said the amount, never asked how our meal was, and most importantly, never said thank you. Feeling rude myself, I loudly thanked him and wished him a good day as he had already turned his back and walked away. ZERO STARS - USED to be great years ago. After waiting 25 minutes for food, asked the waitress to check. After no response, asked manager 10 min later who instead of checking and doing something, just accused us of having no patience and said 2 times this is not McDonalds or Wendy's. When food did come - greek salad with chicken was missing half the ingredients and was $28.95, soup missing and sandwich order was made wrong as well. All in all - bad food, bad service.
