Terrible, terrible experience and absolutely no desire by management to make it right. A simple to-go order ($30 including tax, svc charge and tip) of a chicken and pasta dish dinner was a horrible-tasting disaster, with the chicken patties tasting as though they had just been boiled in water and thrown over tasteless pasta. Mistakes happen, as do bad nights. It's really the reaction of the establishment that a restaurant should be judged by in such cases. But when we called to report the unsatisfactory meal, the restaurant's response was to hang up on us twice(!), insult us for calling, and then claim that, quoting, "we don't make bad food here!" So basically, according to River Edge Diner, the customer is wrong and can go to hell, as opposed to their having any appreciation for our patronage and taking the time to call. We want to support local businesses. But this place doesn't see its customers as having any value whatsoever, and won't make a bad meal right. So we will not be going back, either to the River Edge Diner or its sister Suburban Diner in Paramus. read more

We sat outside. It was close to the event we went to. People are nice. They did a nice job on the outdoor setup. I feel for all the small business owners during the pandemic.. The Greek salad was okay. I love anchovies but I only found two small pieces . Not flavorful like other diners as Chillers, or Saddle Brook Diner . If you want pita on the side it's extra. So they bring you at no charge bread sticks with butter. I wasn't sure what I should have done with the butter. The Italian sub my son got was huge and looked good. Worst diner and worst customer service! I ordered from the "chefs specialty" menu which is slightly more expensive. Maybe 2-3 bucks more. I ordered a cali burger that had avocado. When I opened my burger I had black avocado. I called the manager over and he said " well yes we've had that avocado out for almost 2 hours" my response was " so you think it's okay to give that to your customers?" His response was yes. Tables are well spaced apart. All tables are approximately 10 ft apart and the staff are masked and wearing gloves. A really nice setting to make you feel safe enjoying your meal and drinks. I enjoyed a really delicious burger with fries and cole slaw. Washed down with a couple of really cold beers on ice. It was fun getting out, however as the evening rolled along the place started getting packed with the dinner crowd which was my time to get out. Go early if you want to avoid crowds. read more

*Pre COVID Review* River Edge Diner used to be the place to go after a night out (when we were able to go out). Its great that it's open late and offers everything off the menu at any desired time. It's been recently renovated (just shy of 2 years I believe) so the place is nicely bright and clean. It's hard to find a diner that does milkshakes right, but I'm glad this one does!! It's the perfect consistency every time. However, sometimes the service can be a little spotty. I've been here on many different occasions. We've had times where the service was great and times where we couldn't even get the servers attention (while the restaurant wasn't busy). By far the most uncomplementary diner around. Ordered online and the only way to do so was with sneaky third party apps with upcharges. I've been to this diner several times on all different occasions... for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night drunk food... and everything in between.. but this was my first time coming here after they renovated the entire diner... it looks sooo amazing!! Everything is brand new! They have an outdoor deck which is really nice during the warmer months! The bar is huggeeee and the dessert case is amazing!!! (Try the chocolate cheese cake- it's heaven!!) I ended up getting the taqueria salad which is a huge salad with avocado, black beans, peppers, and a buncha other deliciousness in a tortilla shell- the dressing is my favooooritte (honey lime). He got the Buffalo chicken ranch sandwich (10/10). They have homemade $5 sangria (red or white) on Friday's and specials throughout the entire week. Try the red sangria, it doesn't disappoint + it's pretty strong ;-). Our waiter was amazing and hilarious- his name is John. He was so personable and attentive and was talking to us about the new renovations. My wife and I both had the worst "Monte Cristo" we've ever had. First off let me explain why I put it in quotes: a monte cristo is a turkey and ham sandwich with swiss between two pieces of french toast, battered and fried. Their version was a couple slices of very thin dried out turkey with one slice of dried up ham "open face" style on two pieces of very dry french toast. Not sure how you dry out french toast given the fact that its supposed to be soaked in egg! But have to admit I had no expectations after eating the incredibly bland Caesar salad that came with croutons that were just made with toasted old bread they made there with no seasoning. An old friend came to town so I made my first trip here in years. The name change to the "RED" and complete renovation inside and out has given this place a serious face lift. But you can't slap lipstick on a pig... The old River Edge Diner I remember was less than great, in fact, it was one of the worst diners I'd come across in NJ. It didn't matter that it was the only place open at 2 in the morning to accommodate a rowdy bunch. They couldn't make anything, not even an average plate of pancakes, and that's all I ever ask of any diner. My recent experience was no different. Along with the tiles and chairs, I noticed a change to the menus: less pages, less options, dialed down, a greater sense of purpose and direction given to their food. So I kept it simple to follow suit by ordering classic eggs bennies with home fries. I had hopes of starting fresh and was ready to forget the River Edge and embrace the Red with the coaxing of the new dessert windows and shiny countertops. But it was but a dream within a dream. The home fries were the epitome of dull. Absolutely flavorless to the point that no amount of salt or ketchup could save. And if there was any crunch at all, it was due to the over fried pieces of bitter russet skins that were clumped together here and there. I felt like I was wasting precious real estate in my belly by making room for those. The bennies or should I say BLEH-nnies, were topped with the teensiest eggs I've ever had, not to mention they were both overcooked to a stiff yolk. Everyone knows the excitement of bursting the bubbles atop each mound and watching the runny, golden liquid drip down onto the ingredients below. There's nothing like having a dry english muffin with bland potatoes for breakfast. Albeit a hollandaise (if it even passes as such) that's overly yellow and too dry to matter. So long, Red. Went for lunch last week. Service was extremely rude. On top of that I ordered an Iced Tea and got a refill. I look at the bill they charged be for 2 iced teas. I questions the lady at the counter if refills were included and she said no. What has the world come to? I have never been to a restaurant where they charge you $3.50 for a drink that doesn't include a refill. Handled the 5 kids all trying to give their orders at the same time like pros. Served the kids their water and juice in plastic cups with lids to make sure they were spill-proof. I had the lox and onion omelette with spinach. Husband had the Hercules omelette, friends had the spinach, mushroom and onion omelette; and the breakfast burrito. Used to love the salad bar but post Covid, it's gone. It's clean and updated, having undergone major construction in the past 5 years and even has a small outdoor dining area. Food is typical diner food quality and selection. I've long loved their French onion soup. Need to consider increasing the amount of French fries you get as part of any meal, comes in a little tin cup and definitely lacking in size. Service is always pretty good and rarely do you not get seated immediately since it is a very large diner with plenty of seating. If you're in the area and looking for something quick to eat that won't require a long wait time to be seated it's not a bad spot. read more

Having eaten at River Edge Diner for the past 10 years, I recently had a party there for 10 people. Everyone was satisfied with their meal except me because I felt that the Feta cheese in my dish was not good. After I told the waiter and sent back my meal, the manager came to tell me, angrily, that there was nothing wrong with the cheese. I said I could not eat it and had eaten Feta cheese there many times in the past. I chose not to order another meal because most of the guests were finished eating. When I received the bill I saw that I was being charged for the meal I had not eaten. I said I would not pay for a meal I could not eat and reminded the manager that I had been a regular customer for 10 years without complaint. Suddenly the owner came over and yelled that there was nothing wrong with the Feta cheese, that they make their own and sell to others. He then said he didn't care how often I came to his restaurant in the past, that there was nothing wrong with my meal and I had to pay for it. I repeatedly told him I would not pay for a meal I could not eat and he finally relented and took it off the bill. Frankly, I was stunned that I was treated in this manner, especially as a regular, long-time customer. I returned to the diner about 2 weeks later, figuring that the owner, who I had never seen before might have just had a bad day. However, when I arrived, the hostess, who has greeted me for many years asked me to wait to be seated. She then went to the owner, who was standing nearby and asked if I could be seated. He nodded that it was okay.... Frankly I was stunned at this disrespectful treatment and left the diner. I will never return to the River Edge Diner, despite having enjoyed 10 years of good diner food and acceptable service.
