I come here with the family most weeks for breakfast. Service is great and food is consistent! My only negative review is the host gentlemen. Every time we request a high chair, he forgets or goes and talks to someone else as I'm standing there waiting holding my son, for him or someone to bring me the high chair. From the outside this diner looks nice, renovated and brand new. But my excitement to eat here with my 15 month old and my best friend and her 1 1/2 year old quickly turned to disappointment. We will never be back. When you first walk in you walk past a case full of a variety of delicious looking pastries. We wanted a booth and a gentlemen hostess told us it would be a 10 minute wait. Ok that's fine with us. We wait and we quickly are seated. We come to the table that's being freshly cleaned. We handed menus by the bus boy and waters and we wait for our waiter to come take our orders. But that wasn't happening. After waiting about 15 minutes after being seated we flagged down a waitress who told us she didn't know who was our waiter. They find us a waiter and an older gentlemen helped us. Takes out orders: two omelettes coffee and hot chocolate. We waited about an hour for our food. Now anyone who has children knows that the window of time you have before they get fussy is limited. An hour to wait for food is ridiculous regardless. We watch two other tables of people come in way after us, and are eating their food. Now the kids are getting fussy. Now we are pissed. The older gentlemen was very apologetic and it seemed somewhat busy for a Thursday afternoon, but an hour or more to wait for your food and it seemed the waiter had forgot about us or wasn't assigned to us as we sat down is unacceptable. The omelettes were mediocre, nothing to write home about. I felt bad for the older gentlemen waiter who helped us. He seemed overwhelmed and flustered. Maybe they were short staffed? As we are paying the bill the woman helping us was unfriendly and seemed bothered by our presence. Pretty interior and exterior, Horrible service, unfriendly, mediocre food at best. Go elsewhere. Nothing special here, typical diner menu, big desert case. Service is always friendly, Anwar is great. The food, was average. The burger to bun ratio was off. I felt the burger to be small is thickness, with the bun over powering the meat. The roast beef for my French dip was dry and lame. The au jus had no flavor. It was like dipping in to dark colored water. The gravy for my disco fries didn't taste like brown gravy you get at other establishments. Something was just off about it. To top it off, my fiancé noticed they put us in the back of the restaurant which I initially thought it was because our daughter needed a high chair and it was just out of the way.... I've visited here a couple times since moving to the area 3 months ago and all of the visits went smoothly. Three Sundays ago the experience ruined my image of River Edge Diner and will never be back. The male cashier (approximately 5'10 and balding) greeted the people in front of us friendly but when I came up to the counter, he treated us with nothing but contempt. No response to our greeting, thanks, or even when I asked for a pen to sign my bill. Not a single word was spoken to us while we were paying for our bill and if you've never felt racism, consider yourself lucky. Completely disregarded us and barely hid his disgust. Other times there seemed to be meetings of diners with MAGA or Trump hats on but no one bothered us. We kept coming back because the wait staff and hostesses were always friendly but it only takes one bad apple to completely ruin a restaurant's experience. read more

Mediocre is the word for this place. Met some friends for breakfast on Saturday. Nice place. Clean and recently refurbed. The food: Not so great. Was it bad? No. However, they are pretty pricey and for that $, you need to stand out. No for legit criticism. I was excited to see a Breakfast skillet cooked in a cast iron pan. Guess what guys? It's supposed to be mixed up!!!! This was a skillet of hash browns with cheese melted on top and 2 fried eggs, 2 sausages and 2 strips of bacon literally dumped on top of the cheese covered potatoes. Good point. The thick link sausage was excellent. I paid $11 for essentially a $7 egg and sausage breakfast with an ounce more hashbrowns. My friends' food was no great shakes either. Horrible. Friday 12/23 I visited my friend. She wanted to take me out to eat for the holidays. I was skeptical, as I am immunocompromised and haven't eaten in a restaurant since before the pandemic. She suggested this diner we had gone to many years ago which we both really liked. Since it was very early evening she told me it would not be crowded. When we arrived she was correct, the restaurant was not at all busy. I went inside wearing my mask. A man asked if there were just two of us and seated us in a very small area with booths very close to each other. Although many booths were open he seated us directly across from a booth with three other people. I noticed that the very spacious dining area on the other side of the restaurant had customers sitting there and eating. I asked the girl at the counter if it was ok if we sat there. She smiled and said "sure!". We seated ourselves there. I felt much more comfortable, We were at least 20 feet away from other patrons. Plus we now had room to put store purses and layers of clothing on this absolutely frigid day. The man who had seated us in the booth stomped over to us and demanded to know why we had moved. My friend explained that I was nervous. He replied "about what?!?". Not wanting to tell this stranger about my health issues, I pointed to my mask. He rolled his eyes and said "more customers will be coming soon". I felt really embarrassed. I couldn't believe he was so angry that he felt he had to question us. About 15 minutes later, the next set of customers came. In this large, almost empty restaurant he sat them right near us. What a spiteful human. I asked our truly lovely waitress who the bearded man was and she advised me it was one of the managers. Wow! Is that really how a manager treats customers at Christmas time?? I'd like to say the food was good, but it wasn't. My burger was thin, red, mushy and contained nothing but a bun and burger. No condiments, no lettuce, no tomato and no onion. When I inquired why I was told "they don't do that anymore". I would have needed to ask for it, and it would have cost extra! My fries were a small cup filled with mostly paper and a few fries. Luckily they tasted ok. My friend and I were not offered and refills on our beverages. I tried several times to wave down the other waitress who brought the food, but simply could not get her attention. This place was really good years ago. Since the new owners took over it's become awful. The only saving grace is the adorable older waitress they kept. She is very sweet, friendly and always has fashionable hair colors. Clean and quiet (though this is probably more a function of the off time that we came - 4-5pm) Service: our waiter was nice and kindly answered all our questions. We also had some interesting requests to mix and match the items within each of our orders; all requests were incorporated without extra charge Food: I ordered Super waffles, which is Belgian waffles with meats and eggs on the side. The waffle was crunchy, but tasted like regular bread. It would not have had much taste if not for butter and syrup. Our friend ordered the breakfast skillet, which was pretty good- crunchy outside, soft inside for the potatoes with melted cheese on top and a variety of other things. Have been going to RED for over a year, mainly for breakfast. We like the Skillet breakfast and the Hercules omelet. We've been here a few times for lunch 'cause in the past, it's been OK...nothing great, nothing bad. Today was a different story. I wanted a salad but was shocked when I saw the $18 price. I ended up with a chicken salad sandwich. Rye bread was so dry. Husband ordered a Steakhouse burger. It was cooked as ordered but quite small for the price. And presentation was blah. My go to drink is unsweetened iced tea. I've had this most times when we dine anywhere, and I always need a refill. I've done this at RED many many times. Today when I asked for a refill, the server tells me she has to charge for it. Only for plain iced tea. I could get a soda, flavored iced tea etc but not unsweetened tea? That's the cheapest drink. Sure enough, I was charged for another glass of tea. When paying the bill I mentioned this to the cashier. Absolutely no comment from her. No explanation, no apology, no acknowledgement of me speaking to her. Quite rude if you ask me. And then the addition of a extra charge if you use a credit card. Came for dinner, food good, service good, took dessert home very good. Problem 1 too many flies by our table towards the back. Problem 2, why in the world would you make your customers pay and extra ( in our case ) 1.50 more for using a credit card, dont you know that when a customer pays with a cc they order more food which turns into more money for you and more money for your wait staff in tips. If you need the customer to pay for the cc fees absorb the 1.50 in the price of the food, don't show it to them or switch your processing company. Huge mistake you lost 2 customers for 1.50. It might be that people come here for nostalgic reasons (kinda like how I feel about the old Suburban Diner in Paramus). But all in all their food is eh. I feel like I can just go to another diner somewhere else and get better food easily. River Edge really needs to step up their competition but I guess because they're in such a busy location and have been around for so long that they have a steady flow of customers. Had their clam chowder and it was watery. Had their greek village salad and the proportions were wrong (too many tomatoes, not enough cucumbers and red onions). Had their chicken sandwich and I think it was a heated up patty. If you're going to eat here, you should stick to the basics: burgers, eggs and pancakes. Saw the bad reviews but figured I'd try. Our waiter was nice but we ordered lemonade and he gave us raspberry lemonade, if he would have said that's all they had I would have ordered something else. Luckily I don't mind raspberry but my mom did. My mom got the Athenian burger, it came burnt and only had cheese - no lettuce or tomatoes. I got the jersey disco fries they were actually great. I also ordered cannoli French toast, the cannoli was basically just drizzled on. They were okay but nothing to write home about. The reason for the 2 stars is that a bunch of waiters came and sat behind us and were eating and talking crap about their customers. Tried adding lemon and salt but it didn't taste right. Dipped it in the marinara sauce that it also comes with and it didn't help. Matzo ball soup that I chose with my order was bland as well. Best thing about my meal was the cappuccino even though I ordered it with whipped cream and no cinnamon. It arrived with cinnamon and no whipped cream. Food was overpriced for the quality. Server and staff were friendly. The atmosphere was inviting and clean but I don't think that I would return for dinner. Wish I had looked at these reviews prior to going there for dinner. NE Clam Chowder is always WHITE, with potato, celery, etc..and should not be CREAM OF CHICKEN WITH ADDED CLAMS!! Although there were no pieces of chicken, there were pieces of clam, but with a chickeny taste and smell. That's odd. They apparently had done some major renovations recently, and the inside looked really nice as far as diners go. Our waiter was nice and attentive.
