We happened to find this place while looking for a place to eat while visiting nearby Oradell. They apparently had done some major renovations recently, and the inside looked really nice as far as diners go. Our waiter was nice and attentive. Stopped in for lunch with my GF. We were in a good mood when we went in but that mood changed almost instantly. We were about to be seated in a booth that wasnt cleaned and had crumbs. Next booth, same thing. Should have known this was not going to be a good experience. Finally we got a clean booth on the third try. Our waiter comes over to take our order. GF ordered a cheeseburger deluxe. Should be simple right? Oh no. Here comes the nonsense. The waiter immediately says we dont do deluxe, you can order a cheeseburger and fries but be aware that the lettuce is $1.50 extra, the Tomato slice is $1.50 extra and if you want gravy on the side for the fries that would be $2.00 extra. Um, WHAAAAT! I thought he was kidding but no, this is a new policy and he said he cant do anything about it. I ordered a turkey club and no add ons with this one. We thought about just getting up and leaving but we had a schedule to keep and had to eat so we just dealt with it. The food was average at best. The manager of the Diner was no help at all and had no interest in hearing any complaints. The cashier was very sympathetic and apologized. We left there angry and aggrivated. Wont be back! Great place. We come here at least once a week. It is very reasonably priced. The interior is dated yes, but it's a diner. You want glitz? Then expect a higher price. The food is always tasty, and portions are adequate to ample. the soups and specials are good.the wait staff is always very nice and attentive as are the hosts. There is rarely a wait to get seated. My wife loves the scrod, it's always fresh and never fishy smelling, the salad bar is unique, it doesn't have all the fixings say at Charlie Brown 's but it's a Greek diner style salad bar, Feta cheese olives tomato croutons lettuce. it's good. Long wait to sit even though there were plenty of tables open, so be ready to wait a bit before being able to be seated. When we ordered refills for our drinks, the server took our cups (while still having a bit of drink inside them) and just refilled it. In other places I've had the server bring a brand new cup,topped off and a new straw to drink out of but I guess since it must've cost a pretty penny to get all the renovations done that they are trying to cut costs at every corner. The food was average and to be quite honest wasn't worth the wait especially with the abundance of diners in the area. I had been here before and thought with the new look there would be a new experience but there wasn't. Wouldn't let me post my review without picking a star but I wouldn't even give it one star. Would get none if that was an option. Was there last Friday at 8pm with my daughter and the place was empty. They were closing off one section but I asked to be seated at a table not a booth and seemed very annoyed by this request. So they sat us in the back. No one approached us. Finally 15 minutes later someone who stated she was not our waitress asked if we wanted drinks. She brought those back to us quickly. It took 10 more minutes for our waitress to actually come over and take our order. So it's now 8:25. She brought my daughters soup over immediately. Another employee came over and asked us if we could move tables to accommodate a large party coming in (so tacky) because the other section was closed. Whatever, we moved. At 8:55 no one else had come by and no food. finally at 9 pm our food came but was missing our order of French fries. The waitress said she forgot to put our order in that's why it took so long and forgot about the fries completely. I told her to not even bring them at this point. I assembled my cheeseburger then cut it in half to see that it was pink and the inside cold and raw when I ordered it well done. Sat and waited for 10 more minutes for someone to even notice that I wasn't eating my food. Finally the waitress came over and asked if we wanted drink refills, didn't even notice my burger was untouched. I told her I can't eat it raw. Her response was that she would take it off the bill. Didn't even offer or ask if I wanted another one or something else. My daughters waffle was soggy and her chicken overcooked. But she at it. The poor kid just came from a softball game and she was starving and had already waited over a hour for her food. I went to pay the bill of what we did get and the cashier asked how everything was. I was honest but nice about it telling her I couldn't answer because I didn't eat. She said well, we offered to make another burger for you. No one related that to me at all. Then I'm assuming someone who is a manager or owner was standing off to the side said that I should have come up to the front and told him. I responded that obviously the cashier knew and the waitress knew there was a problem and they should have relayed that information to him. Meanwhile he kept telling me how busy it was. There were 6 tables in the entire diner and 3 servers were sitting at the Counter folding napkins. Busy? No apologies, just blaming me. I don't expect much knowing how things are now but a little kindness and an I'm sorry when things aren't good goes a long way with me. You had me there. All you had to do was the bare minimum to make me want to come back and you couldn't even achieve that or be understanding from my side. I think it's called the RED Diner now. What is spacious and beautiful Diner. There is plenty of parking. And the menu is mind blowing. The service was so-so. I enjoyed a delicious garden salad with shrimp. I was surprised that it was sautéed shrimp and not grilled shrimp. They gave plenty of medium-size shrimp with the meal. My friend enjoyed a hearty omelette with home fries. She was happy with her meal. It took quite a long time for us to get our mail and we didn't understand that considering there seem to be many many staff people and not all that many people there. That would be my only critique. This was the worst experience on a Sunday morning We waited 35 minutes for cold eggs and cold waffle Joe the waiter was nasty and was the worst waiter we have ever had at the RED. We have eaten there many times and this experience will not let us go back. PROS: This is a very clean and well-laid out diner in the area. They have a wide selection of desserts and their menu has a lot of tasty food to choose from all at nice prices. The bathrooms are clean, and their parking lot is big enough to hold many cars. Their wait staff is very nice to us and helped us with anything we needed. There was even enough space between tables to walk through. CONS: The wait staff couldn't understand english that well which made it difficult for us to specify our order. OVERALL: This diner was a very nice diner! Other diners may have wide selections of food, but this diner had them at better prices and the place was cleaner with more parking than many other diners. If you speak English, you may want to bring someone who speaks Spanish to translate, or just use google translate. read more

Always been a great diner, but they started with the hidden credit card fee nonsense. Not disclosed at all until the bill arrives. No exceptions for debit cards either. This is a deceptive. I just had my worst diner experience ever. The place was empty when we arrived. The manager/greeter ignored us for a few minutes. A couple walked in a short time after us and he walked past us and greeted them. He then nodded to us and without saying a word seated us. The couple behind us followed us and sat in the next book without the manager giving them menus or directing them to their seats. The menu was way overpriced. We ended up ordering hamburgers. First we had to send my wife's order back 3 times. First it was the wrong item and then it was undercooked and then the bacon was raw. I kept mine but it was undercooked. The texture of the burgers seemed as if there were some sort of fillers in the meat. They were awful. How can a NJ diner not be able to put out a decent burger. When it came time to check out we were billed for 2 sodas in spite of only ordering one. I brought it to the attention of the woman at the register and she calls out to the manager and says, "check with the waitress to see if they only got one soda". How rude. I dont really understand all the negative reviews for this long established jersey diner. Yes jersey has a plethora of 24 hr, greek owned diners and everyone has their preference but for me River Edge did a really good job. My BLT was delicious and portioned well and the onion rings were home made, which is always a plus in my book. Partner in crime got chicken salad and fries and had no complaints at all. Service was the standard and stereotypical "diner gal" but who doesn't love a little sass with their meal? Adds to the old time charm in my opinion. Ordered the Lumberjack with a side of home fries, and my fiancee ordered the Banana Nut Pancakes with a side of bacon. Food was good, except for the home fries. They are terrible. Unseasoned and cooked to a temperature of warm. They should not be charging people for that laziness. Waitress didn't check back with us until we were 3/4 done with our meal. I had to ask for the check. Normally they drop that when they ask how everything is. Maybe she's new. A medium minute maid orange juice is $2.40 and the glass is the size of a pre-schooler's hand. Well, truth in advertising applies here: this diner is literally a stone's throw from the desultory Hackensack River, squatting way down there in the November air like an old mobster, forgotten and dreaming of a more exciting past. Maybe it was the rain, the cold, the season, but everyone was flat and going through the motions. The service was good, but nothing spectacular. I ordered the Hungry Polack, which for breakfast consists of: a ham and cheese omelet, rye toast, hash browns, side of Taylor Ham, side of pancakes, large grapefruit juice, coffee until I pay the check. Oh, and a bottle of Tabasco. I had to repeat this a few times before it made it onto the check, but I did get everything and it was very good. Toast wasn't really buttered, but the coffee was pretty good and they toasted up the Taylor Ham, nice. Facilities were in really good shape -- you drink coffee like me you end up reviewing places based on their bathrooms as well -- and it was a clean place to eat. I really liked the Sharp Aquos flat-screens they had at the counter area, with captioning on so I can get something out of the news. It looks like I could bring an entire caravan of relatives to the diner and not overflow the main dining area. It can seat about 250 people, and the floor-to-ceiling windows are pretty excellent. This was one of my favorite diners in Bergen county. Ever since the remodeling the service has been going down hill. Even the manager service is piss poor. We had about 3 different problems at our table. We asked that the manager fix the problem. All he said was we are one of the best diners around here implying I was making up what I saw. In reality the manager was not able to take some feedback. We provided some feedback about how the service was less than par. The manager ended up lunging at me. This diner has gone down hill we found hair in our food and the service was poor. The manager service would probably claim that non of this happened. Unfortunately this diner is no good anymore. At the very least there are a lot of better diners around. I hope they turn their service around. read more
