Incredible customer service! I was extremely nervous about going to the dentist after a 7 year gap without insurance to do so. Although my own maintenance was fairly commendable, there was no judgement from any of the staff. Everyone I met, from the front desk, to the technicians, and dentists, were all so well toned and communicative for all good and suggestive points. I've gone several more times since and they are my #1 recommendation when it comes to dental work, On top of that my cleanings coming out flawless, they're surprisingly pain free!! Terrible Experience - Racial Discrimination and Disrespectful Treatment I arrived on time for my 10:30 appointment, checked in, and was told to wait. After waiting for nearly 30 minutes, I noticed multiple people who came in after me were seen before me. At first, I thought it might be a scheduling mix-up, so I continued to wait. But when it kept happening, I decided to leave at 10:55. Shortly after, they called me saying they couldn't locate me, which was insulting after I'd been waiting for so long. It felt like my time was completely disrespected, especially when I saw others being treated ahead of me for no apparent reason. I went in for a consultation about braces, but this experience was the worst quality of care I've ever received. Based on what I experienced, I can only describe this as a form of discrimination. I was supposed to have an appointment on Friday in 2 weeks to complete the procedure. the office manager set the appointment for November 13, 2022. which is a Sunday. THE OFFICE IS CLOSED on Sunday. I did not feel acknowledged or valued; -- Dr. Laura Maxey treatment left me feeling robbed, dirty, and in need of finding greener pastures elsewhere. On my first visit, Dr. Laura Maxey walked in with a brash attitude and began to interrogate and consequently condemn me for using SmileDirectClub services. Despite her behavior, I gave her the benefit of the doubt, assuming she was just having a bad day. During my second visit, which was scheduled the very next day, Dr. Laura Maxey did not bother to greet me or my little one, nor our babysitter. I had been a patient for a couple of years now. I'd never once responded to one of their RSVP text messages and it had never been an issue. Today, however, I got a text that my appointment for an x-ray had been canceled because I didn't respond to one of those messages. When I pushed back I was basically told it was "policy." When I let them know I would be taking my business elsewhere they softened their message a bit and claimed it was all a misunderstanding -- miraculously they were then able to see past policy and find nuance in the situation. Some people have anxiety. Some people have executive dysfunctions. For some people it's really hard to get to the dentist. For them to just rip away an appointment because of "policy" that never existed prior points to the fact that they're not interested in providing healthcare or helping people. Beyond this, I found most of the dentists and hygienists to be almost irritated during their work. It was almost always a cold and transactional experience -- often with thinly veiled, but ultimately condescending remarks, about the health of my teeth or gums. Sometimes they would talk about me to each other like I wasn't in the room. They sure were happy to sell me a toothbrush $50 more than Target or Amazon, though. I think all of this points to poor management. I fully expect someone from said management team to have some slimy doublespeak response to this review. They'll spit some game about "we texted you" (because of course they didn't call before canceling) and try to do anything but take accountability or admit fault. I will be finding another provider. Been taking my 6 yr old daughter to this office for three years now and always had the best experience there. The Dentist Dr Im was nothing short of exceptional and very cool guy. Great with kids as well as adults. I was a little late to my appointment this morning but they took care of us quickly, explained the process all the way through and gave helpful tips on preserving my kid's teeth. Bad dentist and even worse patient care. I think this dentist office is a scam because they pressured us into buying my mom "their" version of dental insurance. Worst part is the insensitive uncaring why they treat their patients. My mom is an elderly handicapped person in a wheelchair with dementia. They know this. Yet, when I called to tell them we were running 5 min late for her filling appointment they said "Oh we sent your mom an email to come 30 minutes early, and since she didn't we are all booked and she has to reschedule." We are talking about a handicapped person who has to arrange travel in advance and cannot even read email. Then they claimed they called my number and left me voice mails which they did not. I am taking my mom to another dentist. She went in for a teeth cleaning and A WEEK LATER they called to say they noticed a cavity on the Xrays. A week later? They don't look at the xrays while the patient is there? Very fishy. Don't use. I am taking my mom's xrays to a REAL DENTIST and not some strip mall scam like river rock dental. read more

I had a terrible experience here! In more than 30 years I've had no dental problems (no jinx), and was very happy with my dentist of many years (in Oakhill). After Delta Dental changed their policies, my dentist was no longer "in-network" and so I thought I would find a new dentist closer to home (in Mueller). Big mistake! Dr. Im diagnosed me as having multiple cavities, eroding enamel, gum disease, and I think if I had stayed longer, he would have diagnosed me with malaria and TB too. I politely told him I would get a second opinion if he didn't mind, he didn't, so I paid my money at the front desk and hurried out. Didn't even get a cleaning, because the good doctor said I needed to get a lot of work done before I could even get my teeth cleaned! Fast forward a few weeks, I go back to my Oakhill dentist, pay the extra for "out-of-network", am greeted by cheerful Dr. Nelson, who says "looks good as always!" and sends me on my way. So if you're thinking of going to this place, don't. Start running in the opposite direction, pass the HEB, and don't stop till you get home! read more

It has been several years since our family has been seen by a dentist. We were grateful River Rock Dental made scheduling a new appointment easy. Unfortunately, we had an experience with one dental hygienist which will end any future relationship with River Rock Dental. During my cleaning, this hygienist made more than one comment about crying children being seen at this dental practice. While our family felt welcomed by the front office administrators, it was clear the experience would not be consistent throughout our visit. She commented on the "type" of children she perceived most of the crying and yelling to come from -- Medicaid patients -- I do not believe she received the response from me she'd been hoping for. The dentist can be a scary place for all children, understandably. Incredibly disappointing that this dental hygienist felt the need to class discriminate. Our oldest son attends an elementary school with many students whose families are on Medicaid. They are our friends, our neighbors. We will find another dentist. up-selling in the dental world is prolific and this office is no different. Dentists get a salary PLUS COMMISSION so they are incentivized to upsell because it lines their pockets more generously. There is something really immoral about medical professionals earning COMMISSION, it's obscene in my opinion. The Tesla out front was paid for with mucho commission $$$$ I bet. I waited weeks to get pre-approved work that was needed. Week after week they said they were waiting on my insurance. I get on the phone to insurance to be told the dentist is out of network ( I was initially told she was in network). Why would I go to an out of network dentist when dental work is exorbitantly expensive?!! I would still be waiting if I was not pro-active and got to the bottom of it myself. I have been a patient of River Rock Dental now for about 2 years. I am about to change to another dentist. Not because of the dental care. It has been okay. It is because, in every single case of going in there, they always tell me I owe them money when the balance is really zero. I had the latest experience yesterday. The brain dead girl at the front desk says to me, you owe us $55 from your last visit. How would you like to pay? I say, no, I don't owe you anything I have come with all my documents showing I paid all out of pocket and insurance has paid the rest. She won't let me see the dentist for the first visit to get a crown. She also hands me the work up of what they said they were going to do. It was inflated with numerous charges that should not have been there. She goes to the back to talk to the manager. I wait 30 minutes past my appointment time and the manager comes out and announces that he has been on the phone with my insurance company. In fact, I don't owe anything. He claims it was a miscommunication. I have used this dental office for a total of 9 visits over the past two years and we have had 9 miscommunications all focused on them wanting more money then insurance pays. I think they get a certain number of people who pay the balance because they don't know that there is a contracted rate for insurance. I say that is unethical at the very least, possibly fraud at the worst. I plan on contacting the state agency that regulates this provider and reporting them. I also have already notified my insurance company that they have tried 9 times now to extract more money from me than the insurance arrangement allows. I am in the market for a new dentist. read more

OMG! I was terrified to go to the dentist. I hadn't been to one in a couple of years. But I woke up with a toothache and my face was swollen a bit. I knew that broken tooth in the upper back had been there way too long. I was pleasantly surprised by the gentleness and thoroughness of care at River Rock Dental. Dr. Im pulled that tooth very gently. There was nothing left but the root. The rest of the tooth was completely broken off. Honestly, it didn't even hurt. I took ibuprofen that night, and the next day never had to take anything. I am thrilled to have found this office and I will be back for my cleaning in a couple of weeks! read more

I really liked the front desk staff, but other than that I have had the worst dental experience I've ever had in my 56 years with River Rock Dental at Mueller. To begin with, let me say that I began this with no mouth pain whatsoever. I've always taken care of my teeth and haven't had a cavity since I was a teenager. I moved to Austin 2 years ago and just needed a new dentist for cleanings. They were convenient and seemed nice, so I gave them a try. Once they had me in the chair though, the dentist put on a full court press up-sell that I had ground and cracked my molars and if I didn't get them crowned immediately they might crack to the root and I'd lose the teeth entirely. They scared me enough that I agreed and prepaid $1200 per tooth to have the 2 next to last molars capped. The dentist then ground down my non-hurting molars and kept doing it wrong so that he had to grind some more. He took 6 hours trying repeatedly to get the temporary caps to fit. I left with teeth that were now in constant pain and very sensitive to hot and cold. The temp cap itself was thin and misshaped and cracked in half within 24 hours so I had to go back in to have another temporary one made which again they had a hard time fitting onto the stub they'd ground my tooth down to. This one chipped but didn't break entirely, but repeatedly came off while I ate even though I went back repeatedly to have it cemented. Finally after a month the permanent crown came in, but guess what? It didn't fit. They had to build temp crown #3 and order a new permanent one. When the 2nd permanent one arrived, I went to my appointment and sat in the chair for an hour only to then be told that the dentist wasn't coming in that day! We rescheduled for a few days later, I arrived for my appointment, sat in the chair and was then AGAIN told they would have to reschedule because the dentist wasn't available! TWICE! I went back the 3rd time and the dentist was there, but AGAIN could not get it to fit so I was AGAIN in the chair with my mouth open for 5-6 hours while he kept grinding my tooth more. In tears and in pain I just wanted to get out of there and go home. The staff all knew that the entire thing was a disaster & kept apologizing and yet I had been very flexible and forgiving. What could I do after they had already ground away my perfectly good, non-painful teeth but to keep giving them chance after chance to fix their mistakes? I should have run to another dentist after the first day. I began this with perfectly fine teeth and no pain and now I am in PAIN ALL DAY EVERY DAY. The permanent crowns do not fit correctly. They crowd the teeth on either side and food constantly gets stuck between them. Those teeth are INCREDIBLY SENSITIVE to hot and cold. Something about how they're shaped on the bottom CONSTANTLY irritates my gums. They have come out repeatedly- I will suddenly bite something hard in my mashed potatoes and lo and behold it's my crown! It smells terrible and totally grosses me out, but I have to wash it as good as I can and put it back on. To add insult to injury, though I prepaid for both crowns, they are now asking for $800 more, trying to charge me for extra time & materials that were only necessary because of their dentist's mistakes! Hear me & be forewarned- BEFORE I went to River Rock Dental I had NO PAIN. AFTER going to River Rock Dental I still have CONSTANT MOUTH PAIN, all day every day even 8 months later! I need to go to another dentist to have them try and fix the mess River Rock made of my mouth, but am traumatized and am STILL MAKING PAYMENTS to Care Credit for River Rock. The front desk staff is nice, but that in no way matters if the incompetent dentist & assistant are going to ruin your teeth and leave you in constant pain or if the billing manager is going to upcharge the patient because of the dentist's mistakes. Like another reviewer noted, a lot of the dentists employed here are TEMPS, not even regularly employed by River Rock. I wish I had known that in advance. There are lots of dentists in Austin. There is no reason to risk having the experience I've had with River Rock and be left for the rest of your life with ruined teeth and constant pain. read more

These folks did a great job from beginning to end. Scheduling was easy, the dental tech professional did a great, thorough job on the inspection and cleaning/polishing, and the dentist was quick and didn't try to upsell a bunch of stuff. Both were very complimentary of my dental practices. They quickly checked me out, promising to file on my insurance, and sent me on my way after scheduling a 6 month visit in the future. I chose this office since it was close to my house. Today was my 2nd wellness visit. I arrived 5 min ahead of schedule and was promptly asked to sign a waiver that said I would be charged $25 for every 10 min I was late. I was told it was a new policy so I thought nothing of it. 25 min later, I asked when I thought I would been seen. I was then told by the rude young lady at the desk that I was late to my appt and they were "fitting me in". I told her that I had made the 4:00 appt because I could not get there any sooner from work. The phone reminder call even confirmed the appt time. I used to go to a different River Rock Dental and transferred to this one. The person that scheduled my appointment must have been confused because I was scheduled as a new patient. I asked the women setting up to check my appointment, because I thought I scheduled a follow up to a previous procedure. She checked and I was correct. She apologized and completed her part of my visit. Then the hygienist Chris, came in to do his part. I felt like he may have forgotten there was a person that went along with the teeth. He repeatedly shined his head lamp in my eyes. He was preparing to clean and had forgotten something, left the suction tool in my mouth as he retrieved the item and further prepared. It made me feel like he was unprepared. Then while cleaning he hit a spot that hurt a lot and did not notice my noise or shrinking away. I had to tell him to stop. He asked me what. I explained he was hurting me. He told me he had to clean it one way or the other. I reluctantly agreed, and as he went for the spot again I shrunk away and he said "Ok, we won't do that." I wish I could convey tone over text, but it lacked sincerity, concern and respect. Also while cleaning at one point he placed his entire forearm on my shoulder/chest in order to better get into my mouth I assume. I have never had a dentist or hygienist place even their hands on me, let alone an entire forearm. It made me feel like he forgot I was even there. The dentist herself, I cannot say anything about since I saw her for maybe one minute. I want to continue with River Rock because my experience with the other location was pleasant and I am hoping what happened to me today is location specific. Either way my fear of the dentist has been renewed and in full force. read more

Friendly staff. Just disappointed in my visits// results. I first went in for a filling. They did ok. Not my best filling. It still feels like it is out of place when I bite down and it has been months. Recently. I went in for a cleaning. My cleaning consisted of them brushing, flossing, and polishing. I had really bad plaque buildup and I was expecting them to use their tools to chip it off or whatever it is they do. I had only expected this since every place I have gone to has done this. However, they did not. They just said I needed a deep cleaning and sent me off. Didn't even attempt to take off some of the visible plaque. So- I went to a different place and they confirmed the fact that they should have used their tools and taken care of it for me to prevent it from getting worse. Not a place for a cleaning... I was then forced to return due to the fact that they would be the only dental office who would pay to put it back on since it was their fault. I have taken my son to River Rock for the past 4 years. He had a bad experience at another dental office before we found RR. Because of this he is terrified of going. River Rock let's him take as much time as he needs to feel comfortable before they start. They explain everything they are doing to him as they do it so he understands. I had an extraction and two crowns and experienced no pain. They made sure I was comfortable and kept me informed throughout the process. So we just went for my 6 year olds cleaning appointment / regular checkup. This was a rescheduled visit because a few weeks before we got to the appointment and waited for 45 minutes to be seen. We were told that they were trying to get a hold of the dental insurance to change the dentist listed since our original dentist no longer worked there. They were never able to get this change made during the time I was there (not their fault) and after waiting for 45 minutes we were all hungry and tired of waiting so we left. I did ask if this is something that I could change myself and they said yes ... I did wonder why I was not told that I needed to do that before my visit. After having a chance to change the dentist through my insurance myself...I rescheduled. When we walked in the front desk person was very nice and we were called in within seconds. The assistant came in and I asked exactly how the cleaning worked. I asked this because my 6 year old likes to know what is going to happen at her appointment (like many of us!) The assistant was just opening her pack of tools and not really explaining what was going to happen. The assistant got up and turned to the tv on .... and actually put it on a specific channel. I like that they have a tv in the room to take my childs mind off the appointment. PROBLEM is that the channel that it was turned on was showing a wonderful movie called "THE GODFATHER"!!! I asked her to change it as soon as she could and she slowly got up and fiddled around with the remote to finally change it to a kids channel. We will return because the actual dentist is REALLY nice and personable. He made my daughter laugh and put her more at ease. I would LOVE to see a little more happiness in that office. People can't stand going to the dentist and it's hard to get kids to go anywhere sometimes .... a little happiness around the kids at their appointment would go a LONG way. My family and I went in today for our first visit. This is not easy for us as both my wife and I had to take time off of work to make this happen. We get there, and we're informed that since this is our first visit we will be getting x-rays, an exam and NO CLEANING. Ummm, why do we all need x-rays at our first visit? And how does that prohibit us from getting a cleaning? It was a giant waste of time and felt like a cash grab to bill our insurance company several hundred dollars. My wife and I cancelled our appointments on the spot, but my son went ahead with the exam. The dentist actually did a great job with him and was very kind. I had my first dental exam/cleaning/fillings at River Rock this week and couldn't be more pleased. The staff members were honest, well-informed and professional. My hygienist (I think her name was Keisha?) was so kind, funny and very efficient and knowledgeable. She made me feel very comfortable at my appointment. My dentist was friendly and talked me through everything. He loves his job! I ended up needing 4 fillings, which they did same day. I felt no pain and the fillings were performed very quickly! My bite was slightly off the next day (Saturday) and I walked in and it was fixed within an hour with smiling faces! I will definitely be coming back and recommend River Rock vividly. read more
