This place is good stuff happiness. Never tried their Mex, but their Sal is off the chain. Their tamal de gallina, a bit of flavorful chicken hidden inside delicious, pillowy masa and paired with a delicate tomato salsa and vinegary cabbage salad called curtido, could be justification enough for this place to exist. And it's only a dollar f-ing fifty. For $5 you can get pastelitos, several deep fried cornmeal pies stuffed with potato, carrots and meat. Think samosas. They're a little greasy, but so is deliciousness. On the weekend they have a seafood soup that's also worth a trip. Eating from their Salvadoran menu alone you can stuff your roaring belly into a coma for about ten bucks. There are so many choices and different styles of Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston. You can work hard to try them all in one lifetime but good luck! I divide them into 3 types. Trendy, Chains, and Authentic. Rivera's is Authentic. I am thankful to have a place to eat where I can just drop in and be me. Great service and they keep it real. I feel so welcome there from all of the excellent staff that are happy to get you immediately to the reason you are there. The food! Fair prices for actual Tex-Mex that just tastes right. You can get refried beans anywhere in Houston for breakfast, lunch, and dinner but the refried beans here stand out. I have no idea what the secret spice is but it makes their version stand out. Not TexMex But true Family style Salvadoran food. Yes you have your typical burritos and what not but I just can't seem to get over Mexican coke and flavored waters that they have. Since I work nearby I usually pop in for my hour lunch and sit eat and just watch the people. It's truest one of those places where it just seems that everyone goes to. Asian black white hispanics I've seen them all here and what everyone can agree on is that the good Scenery and Customer service is the best you'll fine in all of greater Houston. Ok first SALTY is the word that comes to mind. The salsa would have been nice if it was not sooo salty. The chips were nice and thin. The crispy tacos were good but had a chunk of not completely done meat (pink in the center). The mexican tamale was small and covered in gravy the salvadorian tamale was really good my son said. The carne guisada was ok per my husband. My mom's chicken suiza enchiladas were nicely flavored but had some seriously HUGE chunks of chicken. Not very uniform. Ok MY caldo de res was kinda ok but there was a hard stringy thing, the potato or whatever was old and tough, the carott was ok and the squash was too. The meat was very tender. The handmade corn tortillas were doughy and the opposite of the salsa. No salt what so ever. So I will not be back. Food should be as good or better than what you cook at home. read more

I've been searching for corn tamales in the area for a while now but couldn't find them anywhere until I stumbled upon them on Rivera's menu. Finallllly! We went here because of the high rating on Yelp and we were looking for some good Mexican food. I honestly don't understand why this place has such high ratings. The service was excellent but the food was okay. I ordered a papusa as it was the Salvadoran house specialty and it was good but not impressively so. Also had the combo plate with a cheese enchilada, tamale and beef taco which were totally edible. The others in my party were also meh about their food. Ate here multiple times in the past, and the food is always great. Prices are great too. I get the Plato Mixto with a chicken tamale instead of the corn tamale, and everything is always fresh, especially the curtido. read more

My friend and I were suspicious of if the empty restaurant at 7 PM on a Friday evening but decided to venture in anyway and risk it. Worth the risk. My 11 year-old loves their bean and cheese pupusa. I love their Mexican tamale, soups and whatever is on their mixto and combination plates. This is a great place to go to get the home feeling. Service was prompt didn't get the waiter name but very kind. I think it's family owned. You can tell they have alot of regular customers. This was my first time trying Salvadoran food but it certainly won't be the last! My husband and I tried the trio plate with pupusas and cactus. It was delicious. I would have loved to be able to eat more but I was so full I couldn't. The chips and salsa to start were tasty, too. The tea was so fresh, husband said, that he could almost taste the leaves. The service was prompt, courteous and friendly. Our waitress took time to explain what each item was, how to prepare it to be eaten, and encouraged us to try a small bite of the cabbage topping for the pupusa before putting it all over our meal. Very good server, in my opinion. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely return the next time we are in the Webster area. read more

They call themselves Mex/Sal. They excel at the Salvadoran part, and much to my surprise they also serve high quality Tex-Mex. Head to the back of the menu and check out the Salvadoran specialties. The Plato Mixto includes two pupusas, a tamale, fried plantains, beans, cream, and curtido. (Curtido is spicy pickled cabbage that is traditionally served with pupusas.) The pupusas are among the best I've had; try the loroco variety. On subsequent visits I've tried items from the Tex-Mex part and have been impressed. Don't expect tex-mex when you come here. But DO expect the best dang salsa, fresh tortilla chips, yummy papusas and great service from this family-run gem! My husband and decided to try this place on a whim because he local Tex-mex chains just didn't measure up to the food we can get in Houston...this delivered and more!! Best pupusas around town.. I've yet to find a better place in or out of the area. Great customer service. It's small but who cares the food is great. even if you get to go you'll still get just as much as you would if you dine in, and it'll still be hit by the time you get home ( I drove from there to Baytown and the food was still hot and tasty) Also the horchata is wonderful! read more

The pupusas here are amazing and just have the right amount of cheese and masa. The only cheese and revueltas are both great.

Outstanding and authentic! Who knew a world filled with favored was nestled inside this small non discript strip mall? The seafood soup is a MUST. Filled to the brim with fresh, mussels, shrimp, crab, and more. The tacos are amazing as is the beef stew. The staff members are gracious, kind and, eager to please.
