My son and I LOVE this restaurant! He lives in California, and when he visits he has to eat at Mom Alone! We have been going for 20 years since he was a kid. Their food is always delicious. Salsa is on par. Complimentary queso is delicious. Everything we have ever ordered is delicious. Last time he ordered a pineapple margarita and it was so yummy! The waiter is always amazing. Well, we felt pretty alone sitting at the restaurant during dinner time and not many ppl there... but it's a Monday, so that's probably why, right? Food was not great. This place needs kitchen nightmares help badly. My brotha got the el gigante burrito with ground beef lacking in flavor, and tasted almost like eating a sloppy Joe, so I guess tex mex? The side of rice was also lacking in flavor and probably the rice made for the lunch rush. My nachos were ok, but the plating could use some work. The huge space in the middle just made me feel like I wasn't getting much. The semantics of plating aside, our server wouldn't ask the kitchen to cut our burrito in half. The single worst Tex Mex restaurant I've ever been to. The chips tasted like chemicals or cardboard or something. The "queso" is mostly uncooked flour and lacks any cheese flavor. The enchiladas tasted weird as if they were made with dirty tap water or something. It was just a gross restaurant and everything tasted bad. It's no wonder we were the only ones there at lunch time on a Friday. The restaurant is dark and dreary. It's an old Chinese restaurant that has been semi-converted to meet the needs of a tex-me.mx restaurant. It's hot and they have fans on the floor blowing air to keep it cooler. No staff was anywhere to be seen for at least 5 minutes while I stood at the host station waiting for the rest of my party to show up and waiting to be seated at a table. Old Japanese or Chinese restaurant converted to Mexican restaurant. Smells like water damage inside. Very friendly staff, reasonable prices. I ordered a chimichanga and what I got was more akin to an empanada. Very thick doughy exterior, taste was ok. Beans and rice were good. **This review is really a 3.5 star rating.** My bride surprised me by taking me here for lunch, as she knows I'm a Tex-Mex junkie. I'll just say, it was a great way to wrap up 2020. Don't let the exterior of this joint fool you. Though seemingly stuck in the 1970s, the interior is sparkly clean, pleasantly dark and deceivingly large. The servers wear black and white and treat guests like royalty. It's almost as if a Tex-Mex joint is locked in time in NYC, where it's more common to continue dancing with what got them there. As with most places during my initial visit, I ordered a variety platter -- enchilada, tamale, crispy taco and a bean chalupa. Everything tasted great, though the taco had more than its fair share of grease. Otherwise, the lettuce was cool and crunchy, beans were smooth and smoky, and the rice was al dente ... all delicious. The tamale, though the menu didn't mention it, was chicken. Normally, I prefer pork tamales, but this one was delicious and worthy of a repeat. My wife had a beef quesadilla and enjoyed it, despite that it was greasier than most. Crispy thin tortilla chips are served here with salsa and complimentary queso, which is far better than average. While the salsa seemed to contain all of the right ingredients, it's served at an almost-boiling temperature. If you read my reviews, you know that I believe warmed salsa is sacrilege, and most of the time I refuse to patronize a restaurant that ruins salsa by heating it. But this place is different. No, I was not a fan of the warmed salsa (though my wife loved it), but the level of service and the flavor of the food made me a fan. Back in the day, the idea of a greasy taco would have me chomping at the bit. But I'm older now, and such things aren't nearly as fun as they used to be. While there's a 50% chance i got an upset stomach from this meal, I love the people at momalone, the food has a nostalgic feel to it since I've been coming here for years with family on a weekly "thursday taco night", and I think its a nice traditional Mexican restaurant. I ordered the Veracruz special which came with a beef taco, cheese enchilada, a tostada, and guacamole. This restaurant has been operated for at least 20 years by the same husband and wife duo. They serve all the standard, traditional Tex-Mex fare you'd hope to find on a menu and it's always hot and delicious. My absolute favorite is their homemade chicken tortilla soup. Their broth is excellent and they fill it with chunks of delicious chicken and a variety of fresh vegetables. Upon entering Mom Alone we had to do a double take to make sure we were dining at a Mexican restaurant. The overall decor was somewhat confusing.Either Asian or Italian design working here.On top of the decor it was very dark and dreary inside .As for the food we had ordered the beef fajita chimachanga and the mole rojo.While we were waiting we had the complimentary chips with a free queso which was a plus .The margaritas were pretty good as well. Our food arrived pretty quickly after placing our order.I would have to say the beef fajita chimachanga fell short on taste and hardly had any meat inside.The mole rojo was the complete opposite .Mole sauce was very tasty and had a sweetness compared to the usual darker mole sauce.Overall dining experience was 2 and a half star. read more

This is a good Mexican restaurant in the land of good Mexican restaurants. Spun off from Mamacita's several years ago (shoot, probably a decade), I've been hard pressed to find a Mexican restaurant with better service. Very quick to be seated, attentive staff for chips, salsa, water, taking orders, bringing out food, etc. They recently moved locations. They had been in the same building as the Clear Lake Chamber of commerce, but recently moved closer to El Camino Real where several restaurants had failed before. Their dining room is much smaller than their predecessors (presumably larger kitchen). On the Saturday night we visited, it was full but no wait. We were able to get our food and move on to a concert at Scout Bar very promptly. The food is average to above average (against the competition). I really like their long menu, lots of items to mix and match. Create your own combos with made to order meats, cheese, sauces, etc. They bring out queso with the chips and salsa (gratis), I know of no other restaurant that does that. Also have red and green salsa. I'm always guilty of eating too many chips before my meal! Their House Margaritas are average as compared to peers. Not a place I might go for them specifically, but I would not hesitate to order. They get a strong crowd for lunch, being near the Johnson Space Center. With a long list of lunch special options. And again, with quick service, it's a place you can go and not take up too much of your work day. It might be tough to get a big group, I would call ahead. I think some of the dining room space has been reserved for groups, a formula that worked well in their previous location. They used to be open for breakfast on weekends, I'm not sure they are anymore. When they were, it was a good Mexican breakfast menu with Eggs a la Mexicana, a number of platters, and oh yes, their chips and salsa. I like to mix this into my Mexican food rotation. I had such high hopes for this place, at the situs of my former MOST FAVORITEST tex-mex place ever: Tortillas. Do any of you remember how much that place rocked with the video games in the bar area? I loved that place. Mom Alone unfortunately dropped the ball. It is nothing like Tortilla's used to be and it is just a sad homage to be eating in the same spot and remember the good times, then get presented with marginal margaritas and meh/eh quality salsa and super greasy tortilla chips. They have a spinach enchilada but it is nothing impressive. If they served this at Cyclone Anaya's I am sure I am not the only one that would throw it at the waiter and demand edible food be brought. I really like Taco Bell so its not a huge slam to say this - but this is basically Taco Bell quality that is more expensive and in a sit down restaurant with fancy tablecloths and snooty waiters. read more

First timer. You can't tell from the what you see from the road how much room this place has inside. We're still in the pandemic so the hostess and servers all wore masks (I just turn around and leave when I go in places where people aren't). Social distancing was being practiced with plenty of room between tables. Service was quick & friendly. The interior is decorated nicely with a tropical feel - plants, Mexican pottery, nice dining table sets, a mood fireplace (and everything was dusted). The queso and chips arrived first and were as good as any I typically eat. Then I had a taco and tostada and they were just as good. The bathrooms were clean, just needs a little paint touch up. My grandparents and parents would have this as a regular spot if they lived here. It's a sweet, comfortable, friendly place. I can tell they have regulars who just like to eat and hang out. But it is actually one of those hole in the wall places that is not soo terribly bad. The inside is not so hot looking either, it kinda looks like a cheesed up lounge at the la quinta or something.. Second trip here. We have passed by here for years and just never wanted to try it. But now it is probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. The food is very good. The waiters are scurrying around and are on the ball. It would be 5 stars except there has been a stale odor both times we have been. I think the carpet needs to be pulled. This is my favorite mexican restaurant in the entire houston area. It's never too crowded, the food is excellent and fresh, the waitstaff is attentive and it's somewhat less expensive than other mexican restaurants in the area (somewhat due to the fact that we don't have to order queso--it's free!). The chips and salsa are excellent. The chips are freshly made and they bring you red and green salsa as well as queso. I suspect the margaritas of containing everclear or perhaps rhinocerous tranquilers. Everyone I've taken here has ordered their *usual* and acclaimed it of being"the best _____ they have ever had". Everything I have had is fantastic and has become the standard against which all mexican food will be forever judged. They have vegan black beans as an option and an extensive vegetarian selection. They give away dum-dum lollipops and soft italian peppermints at the exit. I think the owners may be the Alone family, hence "Mom Alone's" - this is just a hunch, though=) read more

I am revisiting this review as I eat here quite often and feel it needs to be updated. The food has always been excellent here. My favorite is the Mom Alone Enchiladas.. The salsa is nice, but not always as spicy as I would like... Sometimes it is spicier than others.. Free queso is great. The margaritas are always excellent. They lost a star from me because the last few times we have visited the service has been slow. Still, this is an excellent choice for a Mexican restaurant in clear lake. read more
