If you are Looking for great care for your eyes in Redding there are a few good choices, but in my humble opinion, Riverside Eyecare is the best. They are located in a beautiful building on the banks of the Sacramento River adjacent to Cypress Ave in Redding. The facility is large, clean, modern, and well laid out. On the bottom floor are the physicians, Ophthalmologists, Dr Michael Sumsion and Doctor Sean Sumsion. Not only are both of these guys great physicians, their bedside manner and interaction with patients and family is fantastic. Very down to earth, patient, and happy to explain things. I have seen both of these docs, and I would put them as some of the best. For reference I see physicians at both UCSF and Stanford and this practice is at that caliber of professionalism and competence. Upstairs is the Optometrist, Dr. Jordan Evans. He is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is so kind and patient. I was trying to switch from just eyeglasses to Contact Lenses and my experience with him and his awesome staff was phenomenal. They were not in a hurry to move me through, they took the time to educate me, ensure that everything fit right, on multiple appointments. The bedside manner, caring, and interaction are all outstanding in my humble opinion. I am definitely a fan! read more

Dr is amazing. Had to have glasses remade to be able to use tho.....Work fine now. However I'm struggling with the front office staff. Three different visits, multiple phone calls and the same is true each time. The front staff seems to care less, as if we were a burden to be visiting this establishment. Very high turn Over too it seems. New person every time who assists front office receptionist. I contacted them and yet another new person. Asked for RX to be sent via email and that still has not happened. Honestly if the Dr hired all new, kinder staff, it would be a better rating, I'm struggling giving a three star because the doctor deserves five star. The taff is what repels me. And several others I've talked to say same. Dr, time to train front office staff on customer service with kindness... staff, your not above the customers.., they are the ones pay your salary... Incredible operation here! This is the definition of one stop shopping... Here you can have your surgery, work with a specialist. The icing on the cake is this beautiful facility and show room. The professionalism starts as soon as you walk through the door. Have a look at the pictures in their optical department. This is one of the best I've seen. They have the best frames you can imagine or will get them for you. The team just brought on a low vision doctor to help patients that are visually impaired. You can now purchase magnifiers for helping you read the newspaper or even telescopes for looking at TV! This is a jewel in this city. read more

Without a doubt one of the best medical experiences I have had. I have had five visits (two pre-op, one surgery, two post-op), and my combined waiting room time is less than 10 minutes. And after being called back to be evaluated by the nurses, the doctor came to see me within a few minutes. Definitely a customer-service focused office. I can easily take an hour out of my work day, go to my appointment and be back to work. They are the only medical office I have ever visited that were on time every time. They respect your time as a patient and it shows. Dr Sean Sumsion was professional and knowledgeable. He takes time to answer questions, is friendly and respectful. When I went in for surgery, he was outstanding. He talked me through the entire procedure, things went just as he said they would, and his assistants were excellent. I schedule an eye exam with this facility. After receiving the usual and routine eye exam, I left the facility expecting submission to my insurance company for the visit. My visit was in September of 2023. In February (last month) I received an email from them indicating I owed over $200. I was told when I called, that they billed my visit as a Specialist Visit to my insurance company. When I left the facility after my exam, I was never told that this would be billed as a Specialist Exam. It was a routine eye exam. This is fraudulent. I am very displeased that I was never made aware that this was billed to my insurance as a Specialist visit which is now costing me over $200 out of pocket. Be Aware.... read more

Crystal in the front office couldn't be less helpful! I called to make an appointment as a new patient with VSP insurance. I've never had to tell an office more than that and they look it up. I work for one of the largest employers in town. Her response call your insurance provider for information. My response, what information, a number. Her, no not a number. Me, so what do you need exactly. Her, I can't go over that. Me, hung up. WTH?!?!? Apparently they don't need business. Customer service maybe? Rude!!!!! Fyi... Riverside Eye Care Let me see first to start with the doctor and his associates in the back as far as care is excellent if you call and try to change an appointment to hold another story the ones in the front. Or a whole nother story trying to get appointment changed or made to a certain date is impossible I called and asked several times to change an appointment not a week out not two weeks out but 6 or 10 weeks out and all I get is grief I drive 300 miles round trip so see the doctors and it's not easy to make all the dates work I called today talked to Leslie she had an attitude from the start and really got upset when I asked to talk to the office manager she told me the office manager doesn't make those decisions and I'd have to wait for a tech to call me back. And I understand this but she doesn't have to have such a condensing attitude when they talk to you on the phone we're human beings too just having a problem with their scheduling because they don't ask when you schedule they tell you when you're coming back and it doesn't always fit with the rest of our lives. read more

The care my husband received was great! He had one eye done in February, the other in May. We paid cash up front. Our insurance ended up paying for it, which is amazing! But considering we paid for one in February, and the other in May, we were a little surprised to find out it would be Another Month before we receive $2500 back!!! They are wonderful, but definitely go in knowing Exactly what you will pay, getting refunds is tricky!!!!!! Can't wait to get our refund though!!!! read more

Dr Sumsion has a well trained staff and a high tech state of the art set up for eye examination and treatment. I had lens exchange 10 years ago and it was the best thing I have done for improving my vision and my appearance. I feel much safer not relying on glasses. read more

I woke up one morning and out of nowhere , had some concerning eye issues. I called the office and the receptionist was EXTREMELY polite and willing to get me in same day. Upon my arrival , I noticed how clean the facility was and how polite everyone was. Things went quick and I was able to see Dr.Sean extremely fast. Of all the doctors I've see. Unfortunately the staff is not easy to work with. Dr. Sean Sumsion could not have been better, took excellent care of my eye trauma and made me feel very comfortable. However the staff blatantly disagree with his instructions and it's very difficult to get clear information. They make it unclear who the doctor is? I wish he could have video recordings of what they discuss and how they treat the patients when he is not present. Very upsetting and confusing. read more

tried to get the girls to fax results of my opthamalogy appt to optometrist that is covered by my insurance. First they sent me the wrong release of info form, then they sent another form, returned it, 2 weeks later, when optometrist had still not received the faxed info I called riverside eye to see if they had faxed the info, and she said they were "reviewing my release of info" form and it had not been faxed yet. This is now 3 weeks. I said I would be driving up to get the records today, please have them ready. She could not guarantee the would be ready. Do not go here. They are WAY to big for their own britches. Can't complete the simplest of tasks. read more

I just had an appointment at their newly opened optometry on the 2nd floor, and am VERY happy with the level of service and the optometrist; he was willing to spend the time to address issues I am having with my (older) eyes and discuss solutions with me. The gal that assisted with picking out frames was wonderful, and definitely has a knack for picking out the right frame. I came here because I was unable to get an appt at my (now previous) eye doctor sooner than 5 weeks, and staff at my previous eye doc always tried to steer me towards the most expensive frames. Riverside got me and appointment right away and the frames were clearly marked with prices. read more

My vision has been deteriorating the last few years. I was told it was cataracts and the VA would pay for the surgery. The practice is based on getting patients in and done and out, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I went in for the consultation and was told that surgery would allow me to read again and my vision might require corrective lenses but only for distance since reading and such would be close to 20/20. Had the first surgery on my left eye. Took all of the eye drops, wore the sunglasses provided when outside and refrained from rubbing the eye, all as prescribed. At the next consultation I tried to explain that the vision in the left eye was worse than before. I was told, by the senior surgeon, "Now isn't the time for that". I went for the second surgery and even after a few weeks the vision in that eye was also worse than before. I can't read because the page blurs after just a minute or two. I'm very sensitive to bright lights, which I wasn't before. I tried repeatedly to talk about that but, each time, the subject was changed and no one would address the issue. I was then sent to an Optometrist who told me my vision would not be normal but that the prescription would fix it. I ended up with tri-focals that make me dizzy as I move my head and my ability to read is just slightly better. I can't wear the glasses for any length of time with the dizziness and headaches. So, overall, I wish the promises of the first consultation were kept as that would mean I could see fairly clearly again. That promise was completely a failure. I read the reviews here and it seems my experience was different and much more negative than others. I'm very happy for those that had a positive outcome. Since life is far more blurred now, my outcome was very negative. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Sean for about 18 months now. I love how he takes his time with me, never seeming rushed, and making sure to answer all my questions and addressing any concerns. Also he is so thorough in evaluating my situation. Each step he takes in evaluating me he explains exactly what he is doing and tells me exactly what his findings are. Then he tells me the things that I can be doing to improve my situation and explains any relevant studies or background information to support the suggestion. I had a different surgeon do my left cataract surgery. It didn't go well. The outcome was that I could see better out of my right eye which still had a cataract! My vision was getting worse. I heard great things about Dr. Sean Sumsion and decided to check him out. I was reluctant to get my right eye done because of this. Dr. Sumsion assured me that he could make my vision better. He had his staff do much more extensive testing and measuring. I am 10 days post-op now. My vision has improved dramatically!!!! I am ecstatic! How do you say thank you to someone who helps you see so much better? The whole process was so much better than my other eye. His staff is great and stay right on top of everything. They treat me very nicely. Dr. Sumsion operates with such expertise and confidence. He knew my eye so well before surgery because of all the extensive testing and measuring, that he could pretty well predict an excellent outcome. He set my expectations pretty high. I went to Riverside Eyecare to get cataracts removed. Everyone there is very friendly and professional. I was very relaxed from start to finish. It helps that they have beautiful, soft music on while you wait and the wait time in minimal. Dr. Sean performed my surgery and has an amazing bedside manner. I had been going to Dr. Sumsion for apoxamently 19 or 20 years off and on for check ups and was happy with his service. His staff was always great and very professional. I had cataract surgery with multi-focal lenses in 2016 and had nothing but problems with severe glare at night,I was a truck driver and didn't feel safe driving after dark but had to do it to keep my job. Dr Sumtion said it would go away ( it never has ) after a short time I started seeing very large floters in my left eye, Dr Sumsion said everything was fine it was just floters, within two weeks i went blind in that eye (detached retina ) I was left with permanent damage in that eye ( legally blind ) I'm now disabled. read more

I had gone to Shasta Eye and received Lasik. My vision was terrible. The tested me several times and not once did they say I had a problem. All they would say was "we think you could pass a drivers license exam, so we don't have to do anything". When I had found Riverside, they checked the work, and instantly said I needed laser surgery for a problem that happens to a membrane behind the Lasik and also can have floaters which they can eliminate . The doctor seemed very puzzled when I described my plea at Shasta Eye and said Medicare would have paid for it ! Four days later it was done and I can't believe the vision. It hasn't been even close before and after the Lasik, and has gotten worse since the Lasik, but now its amazing. I really believe that laser should have been done from the beginning and I was miss diagnosed.. The real puzzle is some of the doctors at Shasta Eye do laser. But, if they aren't able or won't diagnose the problem you'll never have decent vision from them. read more
