Interesting place. Bums and billionaires elbow to elbow. A double cheeseburger here is the best hangover cure I have ever tried. Ever. The fries are generous and tasty with bay seasoning, but not home-made by any stretch. Service is fine. Very crowded at lunch time. read more

We found this place on our trusty Yelp app as we were passing through town. The burgers were amazing. The patties are hand pressed and very thin. To compensate, I ordered the double burger sub. No complaints, it was delicious. The thin cut fries are also great. We finished up with some homemade cake and pie. The nicest part of this experience was the staff who were fast, friendly and kind to my children. We will definitely come back to enjoy a burger here again! read more

I never thought I would experience racism first hand, but that is exactly what happened when my fiancé and I visited this place. We ended up leaving because they would not take our order. My fiancé is Hispanic, and I am Middle Eastern (Many people would not guess it). They were not as blatant as to flat out tell us they were racist, they just ignored us for about 30 minutes until we left. We came here on a Saturday and it was not too packed. A few open tables and booths inside and a couple open tables outside. We sat inside at a booth. The waitress came and took our drink order. After she brought us our drinks, she said she would give us a minute to figure out our order...She never came back. A few other parties made their way in, one of which sat right next to us. She was very attentive to their needs. After a minute or two we closed our menus. After about 5-10 minutes had passed we decided to make it more evident we were ready to order by putting our menus far beside and attempt to make eye contact with her. These are all basic things anyone would do to try and get their waiter/waitress' attention politely. Still no luck. We sat there for several more minutes watching our waitress take the orders of parties who had come in after us. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but when she kept ignoring us, I looked around and realized we were the only non-white customers, we realized we must have not been welcomed there. I got up to pay for our soda, and the guy behind the counter acted confused about the situation (considering we wanted to leave after only ordering soda...) He looked at our waitress who gave him a little smirk in response as she exited to help a table outside. He asked if something was wrong, to which I responded "I would like to pay for our drinks and leave". I try not to take it personally but I was pretty disgusted by the way we were treated here. I know the place has been around for a long time, but I did not expect to be treated differently. The sad conclusion from our personal experience, I would highly suggest avoiding this place if you are non-white. read more

Ordered two burgers and fries for takeout last night and picked them up promptly. Burgers were very dry and seasoned fries were stale and had obviously been sitting around for too long. This is the best burger in Charlottesville. It's not going to win any fine dining awards, but it's a fun place to eat. Last time I went I had one cheeseburger with chili and fried onions, and another with bacon, lettuce, and tomato. They were both juicy and flavorful, on the saltier side of the burger spectrum. They actually have a good variety of beers for such an unpretentious place. They keep Old Bay Seasoning in a salt shaker on each table. Swag. Last time I was in there they had baseball on one TV (good), and Fox News on the other (bad). Still, this is the perfect place to go when you're in the mood for a burger in Charlottesville and it's too cold out to grill. read more

Found this place on Yelp. Parking was tight with a fair number of work trucks. always a good sign. The place is 80 years old and not a thing like a regular restaurant. Men in suits and construction workers were all eating lunch. DEFINITELY a local place. Famous for burgers and it was good. Had a bowl of pinto beans. I grew up on that kind of fare and they were really good. Food was served on paper plates and styrofoam cups. Not fancy but a good find. read more
