We stayed for a motorcycle camping event (Frandy Campgrounds ) this time around. Although the reservation wasn't made by me- my friend noticed once the event dates were released, other properties were booked via their websites. As with Riverview Lodge. Then she snooped around Expedia and found some availability. Woo hoo! We've stayed in Kernville a few times already, and with the proximity to Frandy Campgrounds and places to eat and the grocery store, super duper close. We arrived the day before festivities began (Thursday) and got situated. It's a first come, first served parking situation. And if you got the rooms closer to the river, you can utilize the paved driveway and head on down. She booked a double queen room. Our bed was so comfy, it was easy to fall asleep. The AC blows so much cold air (don't mind the noise from it). But, since we picked the bed closest to the AC unit, I think hubby unplugged it the second night & we propped the window next to us for a fresh breeze. Since my friend checked us in, she told us coffee's available in the morning. I don't recall her telling me what times coffee is served. So, on the second day- I lazily walked into the coffee area at 6am and was disappointed there was nothing. Then, I walked into at 6:30am and the coffee pots with a variety of flavored creamers were available. When I went back for coffee around 10am- everything was put away. Womp womp womp. *Some friendly advice- perhaps staff can post a note in the coffee room what time coffee hours are. That way it gives customers a chance to plan ahead. It's a no frills property. You get a TV with cable (we watched MTV the entire time). Strong water pressure in the bathroom sink and shower. Toiletries you'd expect from Motel 6. So, if you're dead set on something specific, bring your own. There was a fake flower vase set on one of the tables in the room and a fake flower arrangement in the bathroom. Both have a thick blanket of dust on them, that if you knocked into it or slightly touched it- thick dust bunnies just cascade. At this point, just throw away the fake flowers. It would suck if a customer has allergies. I'm sure something can be found at the dollar store in Lake Isabella. Good sized mini fridge and microwave available. And the chairs placed outside your front door, are a great way to just chill in the shade and inhale that fresh air. Along the river, Riverview Lodge has an area with fire pits and logs you can burn. Clean, apparently historic place. In the middle of nowhere, but with a beautiful river that runs right alongside outside the doo. It is rustic, old-fashioned, and outdated, in need of updating. Locks are turnkey. Extremely clean, but very basic. It was odd to have a refrigerator, microwave, dishes, and cups, but no silverware/cutlery. No coffee muffin, etc. We arrived around 6 PM and nobody was in the office, but our key was stuck with Scotch tape to the door with our name. Only got to enjoy the swimming pool for about 20 minutes, unfortunately, because it closes early as soon as the outside lights come on. There is a bizarre attention to detail-- almost OCD characteristic-- highly specific signs all over the place as posted below. Summary: for $250 a night it's reasonable. But nothing special. I would've liked to have interacted with an employee and I really think the sign on the pool is grotesque and should be removed. read more

Cool location. Room was a little suspect as far as cleanliness goes. Fridge didn't work and the layout was pretty insane, like there had to have been a lot of effort put into making it so awkward to access the sink in the bathroom. Then there were a couple next level weird god posters just randomly thrown up, even in the room. Cringe AF. We get it, you want to pretend you're in middle of the cuntry in a flyover state and haven't put any intelligent thought into anything. But as a real American, I understand this country was founded on the principle of freedom from religion. And -- while I get that this is a private business and they can be as weirdly obsessed with supernatural fictional characters as they want, and plaster it all over their property no different from a funny batman-themed motel, if such a thing existed -- if I wanted to join a cult, I'd go to church. read more

We stayed in a room with a deck overlooking the Kern River. The room was very large and rustic with a log cabin feel. The king sized bed was comfy and the room had its own ac/heater to keep the room comfortable. Fresh, hot coffee was available in a breezeway near the office. The caretakers at this place were very friendly and gave us great dining and activity recommendations. read more

We stayed one night at Riverview Lodge and was able to book a last minute spot for a Saturday which we were grateful for. This lodge is very quaint and is located right next to the river and the downtown area, which is a short walk to all of the cute shops and restaurants. Upon arrival, we were greeting by one of the owners and she was very nice and helpful. Our room were clean and had the amenities that we needed. The TV had a good connection, the bed had a nice thick comforter to keep us warm at night and we were able to take a nice hot shower in the morning. The shower pressure was heaven. We hope to stay again when we are in the area! read more

This place was great!! My mom and I went to this SAME lodge 20 years ago when I was around 5 years old. It's obviously a place to come back to! Don't expect the Ritz Carlton!! But it sure did its job. Comfy beds. Warm room with heater provided. Air conditioner works, too, I'm assuming. We came during the winter and only needed the heater. The room was spacious enough for three of us. The bathroom was clean and had the essentials: shampoo, conditioner, soap, hair dryer, different size towels. The location is fantastic. There's a private little way to the river with a super cool bridge. It's so peaceful. Then for food, you can walk across the bridge to Pizza Barn! Yummy! It's such a convenient location! The morning was great since the lodge provided a couple different types of coffee, creamers, fruits, and oatmeal! Peaceful and quiet. We are planing to do another visit some time in the next year. On Sat Aug 20 we stayed for one night. When we went to check out on Sunday Aug 21 our car would not start. We had taken everything out of the room and put in our car. We had to call AAA. They did not arrive until 2:15 at which time they started our car. The owners were never there. No one answered the phone number at the front desk. There were 2 young girls cleaning while we were waiting. One was very pleasant, blonde girl. She tried to find a jumper for us. The other one came to the room at 2:00 to clean and told us she was charging us a $50 late fee. There was nothing in the room. She knew we could not leave. When I tried to explain that she knew we were there, she knew we were broke down and never mentioned anything about charging a late fee. Then she proceeded to tell us " you are never welcome at our hotel again." In addition, I had called at 11:00 to ask if there was a late check out fee as we were going to breakfast. The same maid said no, 12:00 was fine and there is no late fee. Then when our car wouldn't start and we are stuck in 90 degree heat with our dogs we are charged $50 and told never to come back to this hotel again. The worst possible customer service I have ever experienced. My bank is declining the charge. Good location but this place needs a lot of work. We stayed for 2 nights during a very hot weekend in a room with an small, old air conditioner that couldn't cool a dog house. We were sweating like whores in a church all night long. The carpeting needs to go and the furniture needs to be replaced. Everything is beyond just needing to be cleaned. I wanted to leave after the first night but was talked into staying. I beat it out of there very early on check out day. I don't need luxury but it must be clean and comfortable. I also don't recommend getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. I did and was greeted by Gregor Samsa. One extra star for the refrigerator, which did work. read more

My initial impression of my room being quant changed when I realized the high antique four-poster bed was so high I had to struggle to get into it. However it wasn't as bad as the cleanliness I DIDN'T find: -Garbage was not picked up in the room for two days; -I had to ask for paper cups which were supplied on my first day but never replaced. -Cigarette butts remained in ashtrays outside my door for two days WORST OF ALL....The stained smelly carpet was never vacuumed. This was the first time I felt the bottoms of my shoes where cleaner than the carpet in my room. What was good? fresh fruits where available in the lobby all day. read more

What makes a trip are the people you encounter and this place has the best hospitality staff and great service. When I say They will go above and beyond to make your stay cozy and happy I'm not kidding, my boss left his fishing license at the office and the front desk allowed me to email it and print it for him therefore saving the trip!! They are so nice and I'm so appreciative. My boss is hosting a boys trip for five of his closest friends for a Forks of the Kern River rafting and fishing trip and this started it off perfectly, good old fashioned service!! If you like the smell of stale cigarette smoke, dirt, old uncomfortable mattresses, stained carpet, a broken shower floor, no water pressure, mold, mildew, 3 missing lightbulbs, the ability to hear your neighbors conversations in complete detail, and no breakfast, then this is the place for you. The hosts were rude, they sat and smoked outside the rooms. Having a non-smoking room at this place is like having a non-peeing section in a swimming pool. I paid $107 for this room, and that was about $100 overpriced. The only thing it had going for it was proximity to the river. They said they have a "private beach." If you can call a strip of sand, dirt, rocks, and a tiny bit of grass where everybody else along the River has access to a "private beach, " well then they have it. The only reason I'm giving this hotel 1 star, is because I couldn't give it 0 stars! read more

Very disappointed to find that the room was so old and not even cleaned. There was trash from previous guests under the bed and thier half used water bottle in the mini fridge. Also large dead bugs under the bed. I felt that if that was the case, the old dark patterned bedspreads and pillow covers may also not have been washed, but just thrown back on the bed. Not certain, but suspect. The baseboards and ceiling in the bathroom has all kinds of dust and dirt and the laminate floor was cracked and missing in parts by the shower. The screens on the window were warped and the latches on the wind do not latch, so don't leave your belongings in the room. The bedside table lamp did not work, so the only light is the ceiling fan light. If the owners were in the office, I would have definitely asked to see another room, but they were not in and we had made a long drive. It was gross. The office was also closed in the morning. Do not stay here unless you are able to see a room before spending your hard earned non refundable cash. I asked another guest, and his room looked cleaner, no holes in the flooring, but still old. A cozy, little motel right on the Kern River and within easy walking distance of everything in Kernville. The building is old (circa 1910), but has been well maintained and has fairly modern updates, including free Wi-Fi. Parking is a bit limited, but, at worst, you'll have to park in overflow behind the motel. Breakfast is as Continental, as advertised. Fresh fruit (apples, bananas, & oranges), Oatmeal packets, prepackaged danishes, and coffee. It was plenty for me, but don't expect a buffet. Bathrooms are updated, and water pressure in the shower is very good thanks to the nozzles installed. ( No tub BTW) Reports that there are gaps around the door are accurate, and there is little in the way of noise mitigation. We were a bit worried as, during our Memorial Day weekend stay, there were a couple of boasterous families visiting in the main yard outside our door. We were also in room 4, right next to the breakfast area. However, we ended up having no noise issues. The king sized bed was okay, if a bit lumpy. The mattress is probably a bit past it's half life. Decor is cute-rustic. Room service seemed a bit spotty only in that our room was skipped the first day. That said, the room was very clean on arrival. Overall, Riverview Lodge is a good value as a clean, comfortable place to stay while enjoying Kernville and the local area. read more

I just tried to cancel a reservation because of the Erskine fire. My wife has health issues and cannot be around that. I have been going to Kernville for over 30 years and to say the town is completely unaffected by the fire (or never will be) is completely false. There are road closures, relocations to schools, smoke, 0% containment, etc. Of course the owners tried to make me believe there is no problem, but they were rude, did not offer any alternative and otherwise were completely ambiivalent to anything except getting their precious money. The owner threatened to take me to small claims court if I tried to fight the cancellation charge with my credit card company. Seriously? Expedia further was no help. It's just hard to believe that people run their businesses this way. I certainly don't run mine. read more

This place is a gem. If you are looking for. A 5 star generic hotel that can be found in anywhere USA, this is not it. This is a cozy , family run , country style lodge. Each room has rocking chairs that face the river( 1/2 star off because the rockers were in such disrepair). Our corner room had a queen four poster bed with wine colored bedding and comforter. The decor was "grandma"s antique" end table, dresser and armoire . Room was clean,a/c worked as well as the ceiling fan, Kernville can get really warm so this is a must. The couple who run the place were cool, helpful but not over bearing. We will be back. If you need a get away from LA for a bit, give this a try. The Sequoia's are magnificent, the river is beautiful and the locals are the real deal. read more

How can someone cancel 72 hours before check in, if they made the reservation 48 hours before their stay?Broke amateurs. We rented 3 rooms for Easter, the rooms need A lot of help , woke up with back aches do to the mattress they are horrible in all 3 rooms , hair dryers on wall don't work,no shower mat ,almost fell do to water coming out of the shower,my sisters room wouldn't look , seams like some broke the door and they never fixed it ,they rugs are super dirty . Finding this place was really easy, it's right by the river. The main reason that we chose this hotel was because it was dog friendly. When we were checking in it seemed like we were hit with problem after problem, which was a terrible welcoming after our long drive. The initial meeting made the rest of our stay at River View Lodge very uncomfortable... let me tell you about it. We had 2 rooms reserved, both rooms having 2 queen sized beds. The woman in the front office franticly told us that Room 10 had plumbing problems so we couldn't go in. Because of Room 10 being unavailable she informed us that we would be receiving 3 rooms, we were accepting, but very confused as to what was happening. I'm assuming Room 10 had a double bed so in return she gave us two rooms with single beds in it, I figured that much out after we saw all 3 rooms. If the issue was presented to us differently we could have taken 1 room with a double bed and 1 room with a single bed, but that's already done and over with. Once that situation was settled we informed her that we have a small dog with us. Her face filled with frustration and she started shaking her head, "I don't do dogs." We explained to her how the website says they are dog friendly and that there is a sign right next to us saying, "$20 pet fee." Her response was that she is going to change it, everything is going down, "after this last week, I don't do dogs." I told her that my dog is 6lbs and won't be a bother, but she said, "I don't care if it's a 6lb dog or a 50lb dog, I don't do dogs." We were about ready to leave and asked where else we could go. She then said we can stay with our dog, but not to tell anyone, "after 13 years of allowing dogs" blah blah blah. I felt like whatever incident happened last week, she was taking out her frustration on me. NOT COOL. I paid the $20 fee, and signed the pet rule paper. When she took us to our rooms she pointed out the doggy bags... they seemed to be still dog friendly. Proper steps need to be taken when transitioning to new policies before disputing with your guests. Step 1, change your advertising and allow time for the public to adhere, don't get mad at me because I couldn't read your mind and traveled with my dog. Another thing to add, when giving us the tour the woman told us how the place is 100 years old. Using that fun fact almost as an excuse. Being 100 years old is no excuse for having bad mattresses and dusty, out dated décor. 1 star for the free room, and 1 star for the breakfast which consisted of good coffee, instant oatmeal, packaged pastries, and assorted fruit. Won't be coming back here again, I'm sticking with Airbnb next time. read more

We have stayed here probably 5 or 6 times. Each time, due to nothing else available. Each time I kick myself. First, the hosts were nice people. Second, the location is awesome. And Third, the coffee was good. That's where the 3 stars come from. Let me tell you the worst nights sleep I have ever had, and at 135 bucks a night, you'd at least expect to have a decent bed. The mattresses, in each room we have stayed in are horrible. They must be part of the original 100 year old building. We were told to 'flip the mattress'... ??? WTF?!?! The carpets are filthy. Dont dare walk without shoes. The shower heads spray a ridiculous, almost painful mist, showering was rough. The 'breakfast' included was super sad and cheap. The comforter on the bed and the pillow shams were FILTHY. The sidewalks uneven everywhere and the wooden steps are broken, and downright dangerous. The place was in serious need of some safety upgrades, and a deep clean. We visit the area often and have stayed in every single lodge and in. This is by far the worst accommodations we have found. read more

This place does not come close to having even half a star!!!!! Let me start by saying that I had made a reservation in advance to secure a family vacation. When I checked in they said that they already charged my credit card and that it was a done deal, they rushed through the the introduction, instructions and directions of the grounds. This team who is the management was extremely careless and smoked outside of each and every room, it would vent into our room as soon as we opened our door. My children complained multiply times on smoke being in our room. (Each and every item of clothing had the sent of cigarettes when I unpacked at home). May I continue about the cleanliness... It had filthy carpets that would turn your feet black if you did not wear shoes around your quarters, that were extremely small and deceiving by the website photos! The bedding was discussing. The sheets felt and smelt like they had never seen a washer machine.(I never saw the maid take one comforter out of the rooms she cleaned. So there for the was not a rotation or a swap for a new clean one). The mattress smelled of rotten cheese or horrendous traveling feet.(I put a towel down to protect myself and family from the bedding). May I continue by saying there were coaches in the bathroom. I tell you all, this place was more filthy than a motel 6 in a bad part of town. Ending this tragic experience at the Riverview Lodge, my family and I decided to take a punch and leave earlier than our reserved stay due to also the fact that the "staff" were extremely rude. They had friends family and whomever stay in rooms that didn't have occupancy, they would just kinda move room to room as guests came and went. My family and I felt taken advantage of by being charged for some oasis or mirage that was sold to us. We unfortunately stayed for 3 nights. I can't believe we even made it thar far. By the morning of the 2nd to last day we packed up and hightailed to our home sweet home. I have never felt so dirty in my life, I'm still washing that place off of me! I'll be surprised if we don't get an infestation of bedbugs in my own home. It's without said that I won't be traveling back to the Riverview Lodge EVER again. read more

Came here in December for the annual Citra beer at Kern River Brewing. The owners are very friendly and nice and of course love the beer as well at Kern so that made me feel even more welcomed! We stayed only for the night since we had plans on our way back home. The rooms were very well clean and spacious for the size we got in our queen room. I cant really complain except for minor imperfections like the the bathroom shower that just needed some spackling and some touchups. Other than that, this place would be a nice spot to visit again during the summer since its close to the river. We will be back soon again Im sure! They also have a nice basic breakfast room in the lounge area with basic stuff like fruits, bagels, snacks and coffee so you cant go wrong with that! read more

Enjoyed porch outside room and water pressure in shower. Microwave and refrigerator were in closet. Two wire hangers on 6 inches of useable clothes rod. Noisy air conditioner. Pillow cases were really wrinkled like left in dryer for a couple days. Looked under table where coffee is placed in am for an after hours fork or spoon for leftovers and was horrified by years of dirt and spider webs. 4 days 3 nights with no sheets changed. So I get here to check in and the girl asked me if I was with a party that had 3 rooms, and I said no and I gave her my name and she just flat out said we don't have a reservation for you. She was very rude, more like a total bitch and didn't want to even see my reservation number. She was too busy going back and forth stuffing her face. Worst customer service I have ever seen, and I worked in sales now for the past 30yrs. She appeared to be in her late 40's with a bunch of tattoos. I don't know maybe she was going thru the change of life. Anyhow lucky for us we went to Whispering Pines and Louise the owner hooked us right up with a room. Great place to stay! Let me tell you by I didn't even make it to the lodge less than 12 hours to our arrival the owner or so she said she was. Called to cancel my long weekend (Memorial Day) stated that my room is the only room that had an issue. Didn't even bother to try to make it up to us nothing. Called Hotels.com and they got the same information. So if I were to cancel on them I would have gotten penalized for 1 nights stay but they can my entire 4 day weekend with no penalties or even I am sorry let me try to make it up to you or even try to set us up at another lodge nothing. She is completely rude horrible I will never step on this property. I even paid for a different hotel to get a head of the traffic so it cost me way more than it should have been. I don't use the word hate but I hate the way the owner thinks she's superior to all because she owns the place no respect for her paying customers or human beings for that matter. We were tired and I was dealing with a pretty harsh cold. This little gem was exactly what we needed after a day of moving and searching for auto parts in east LA. The rooms are nicely sized, with a rustic, mountain vibe. We paid $79+tax for a king room because they were out of queens. This place allows dogs for an additional 20 bucks. Each room has a few chairs and a table on the porch outside for lounging. Their garden area was adorable and frequented by a small flocks of ducks. "Breakfast" is from 6:30am until 11. I wouldn't even call it breakfast. It was literally just a few prepackaged sweet cakes, oatmeal packs and some overbrewed coffee. The shower was a super-powerful mist that could not be contained by the flimsy curtain. Water leaked everywhere. All in all, this was a decent resting place. Nothing fancy but cute enough. read more
