I love Kernville and the surrounding valley. We were just looking for something nice and quiet with no frills. We found exactly that at Whispering Pines Lodge. It's very easy to find and within reasonable walking distance to many of the local stores and eateries of Kernville. I'm not typically one to stay in my room all day although the nice AC makes it tempting. We were able to go up to the mountains the entire day and come back and jump in the pool at Whispering Pines. The pool is very clean with a gorgeous unobstructed view of the mountains. The front office staff were very kind and friendly and quickly checked us in to our room. We stayed in room #103 which is very cozy with a kitchenette. The room was nice and clean and we even had a deck out the back door to look and listen to nature. There's no real designated parking spots for individual rooms so it's first come, first served. It gets very hot in Kernville so I would highly suggest parking in the few precious spots in front of the pool fence which give more shade throughout the day. Really beautiful and quiet property. Close to town. You could walk there but we didn't because no shoulder on the road. My family and I booked 2 rooms with an adjoining porch. We had an extra person with us and Sarah promptly brought up an air mattress with extra sheets and blankets without me even asking. Very attentive and friendly staff. The rooms were what you would expect in a river side lodge. Rustic. But great AC, WIFI, tv, and comfy beds. The pool was awesome to cool off after hikes. Would definitely stay here again. read more

Quaint, super clean, large upstairs cabin. Living room, jacuzzi tub, huge bathroom, double sinks and shower. Comfy couch, fireplace, large outdoor deck. We can hear the river flowing. Super comfy firm king sized mattress in a large bedroom. Lovely grass knoll area for pets or just enjoying the view. Pet friendly cabins. Coffee maker, small fridge and microwave. Complimentary tooth brush, comb, coffee and tea. Very kind and appreciated. Restaurants and a grocery market are within a short drive. Update, we decided to stay an additional day and got a studio room with a view of the river with balcony. Also has a large, very clean bathroom with double sinks, tub and separate shower. We stayed one night only in room 105 and had the following problems. There was a rip in the patio screen. There was no hot water in one sink. The fireplace did not work. The only heat was in the bathroom. While comfortable the mattress was lumpy. There were insects. Needless to say we won't stay here again. And it was overpriced! read more

Cute place to stay in Kernville. Stayed in 106 partial river view lots of trees blocking it. Bathroom is very large had a separate bathtub and shower. Bath tub was not in service. Patio deck off the room is great for stargazing at night. They have Direct TV so lots of station n movies to choose from. Black out curtains so very easy to sleep at night. Convenient location to restaurants and James Store. There is a walkway to the river. Check it out. You can walk to eat. Parking in front of the rooms. read more

Definitely deserve the 5 stars. We were able to check in hours early as they had the cabin room ready to go. It was so clean. Bed was comfortable. Kitchen was usable. Paid directly at lodge and reserved a room w/Kitchenette for the next night. Showed up at lodge the next day and had to deal with a very unpleasant woman named Juanita. She told me there is a problem with the room I reserved and that I've been "bumped" or "dumped" to another room w/o a kitchenette. Asked Juanita how this could happen and all she said was, "this stuff happens, so do you want the new room or not? She then said she can cancel the reservation for me but it was 5:00 pm and would have been unable to secure another hotel room. She reduced (minimally) the price of the new room and I went in to put my stuff in the room. Came out of my room and saw Juanita being chumming with the guest who received my reserved room. They were hugging and laughing so it was apparent that this was a friend of Juanita's. So, she basically dumped me into another room to satisfy her friend. The new room had bugs, ants, and was in bad shape. The mini fridge was filthy. Bed smelled like the sheets had not been replaced. Piece of crap for $200. What a joke. The next day I spoke with a housekeeper and I told her of the situation and how Juanita gave my room to her friend. The housekeeper laughed and said, "...Juanita doesn't have any friends." I left the motel the next day and drove home. A few days later I checked my credit card online and a guy named "Ryan" had arbitrarily charged me the money that was credited to me for the new room. I called the next day and Ryan picked up the phone. I asked about the money I was credited was put back as a charge for the new room. Ryan also identified himself as the owner, of which he is not so he's just a basic liar. He's an employee there and is a "man cleaner" cleaning up the rooms. Ryan then said he reinstated the charge that was credited to me because I broke their TV and smoked in the room. This was simply retaliation by the motel for telling the other housekeeper my story the next day. I do smoke but I informed Ryan that the only place I smoked was on the back patio and front patio. And, why would I break their TV??? I'm 60-years old and not a teenager. Ryan is a moron. Ryan then said he would credit the money back to my credit card and also mentioned I've been blacklisted from there and to never come back again. This place is a s*** hole. read more

This spot is a hidden gem. We stayed here during the Rivernook Beer Festival since my wife is pregnant and a tent and air mattress wasn't ideal and it was way better than we expected! The rooms have a nice cabin-y vibe with lots of wood. An electric/gas fireplace in the room as well as a/c. The patio views were amazing! The staff super friendly. Couldn't ask for more, will definitely be back. I'd love to see this place in the winter when it's snowing read more

We hung out in the pool....110 degree heat outside, cool but not too cool (perfect, actually) water temperature inside...and it overlooks the beautiful mountain range. I've stayed here a few times and have had a GREAT experience each time. The location is unbeatable. Very peaceful yet still close / convenient to stores and restaurants. I've stayed at 4 other lodges in Kernville and this is by far my favorite! Rooms are spacious and clean. My ONLY complaint are the pillows; they are large / thick and uncomfortable. Luckily each time I found 1 small pillow and my husband was fine sleeping without one at all. The lady running the office (wish I could remember her name) was great! Super welcoming, helpful and even fun to talk to! Can't wait for my next visit to Whispering Pines! read more

Booked a stay last minute for a getaway with my wife. Rooms are very big, clean and had a great view of the river. Staff was friendly and check in was easy and quick. Best kept secret in the Sequoias. We have been going here for years. Great views. Clean rooms. Comfy beds. Walk down to river. Pool is fun for all. Fridge and microwaves in rooms and grills on property so you can make your own food. There are also plenty of good restaurants in town, many in walking distance. We stayed here a few weeks ago and had a great time because the location and the room we stayed in were great and the people who work at Whispering Pines were so accommodating. When we called to make a reservation we found out there was a large group coming to stay there at the time we wanted to make our reservation. Juanita, who does the booking, was able to juggle some things around and get us a room. The room we stayed in had a "mountain view" which consisted of lush green foliage and wildflowers which were a result of all the rain the valley experienced the past winter. We were able to walk to the Kern river on a small path from the hotel, which was lovely. The rooms have a gas fireplace which added a lot to our experience. The location is perfect, just outside of town so it's quiet and secluded. We enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to stay one more night. We had a very relaxing time and look forward to going back again. read more

This place is so fun to stay. Our family loves coming here in the summer and swimming in the pool and taking a tube ride in the river. We also like staying in the fall and winter months. My kids like how close we are to Kernville and walking to get a meal or ice cream in town. We also like to BBQ on the Lodge BBQ and just hang out. The cute wooden bears outside the office called our names! We loved our stay - room was retro cozy and the huuuge deck and oversized bathroom was a pleasant surprise. We especially enjoyed our charming and hardworking host! He gave us a midweek deal that matched a competitor, then later came by to bring us extra yummy fleece blankets and helped us work the TV. Quiet place to rest. Everything was okay for the most part. Back area facing the Kern River area. Cabin like rooms. Not much to do in the area. A few restaurants and businesses but everything is miles away. Winter season closes areas for hiking so don't recommend winter season much. Beautiful lodge with great amenities. I absolutely loved my stay at Whispering Pines. Check in was very easy and flexible. The room was clean on arrival. The TV was almost laughably old but I don't think that's why most people are coming out to WPL. The air conditioner, heat, and fireplace all worked great and were nice additions to the room. Having a balcony and view of the river was pretty special and I'm glad the staff recommended it. The view of the stars from the balcony was absurdly beautiful. And the pool was well maintained and accessible from the rooms. No complaints for my stay at WPL. It was reasonably priced and with a great proximity to the town, couldn't have been more convenient. Would surely stay again if I'm passing through Kernville! read more

We stayed here during our group trip in the middle of March. Great time of year to visit! Cool mornings and nights but warm and sunny in the daytime. Not very busy since it's off season. The lodges location is great, right by the river. The pool deck and our room patio overlook the river, which was beautiful and so peaceful. The rooms had everything we needed (queen bed, TV, kitchenette with utensils and cooking ware, air conditioning, etc), it felt very homey and cozy. Less than half a mile from the main market and brewery/ restaurant in town. It also had a grill we could use. The owner was very accommodating and hospitable. I'm glad I didn't Yelp this place first or I would have had major anxiety. We decided to drive to Lake Isabella on a whim and camp out. When I say on a whim, I mean that my hubby said over coffee "let's go to see some giant redwoods" and 30 minutes later we were on the road with my daughter reluctantly in tow. When we hit the lake area it was too cold to comfortably camp without the items we left at home as we rushed out the door. No cell service most of the drive. The first place we chose looked a little sketchy so we decided to keep driving. That's when we found Whispering Pines. It looked super cute so we went in to inquire about rates. They were almost twice the price of the sketchy place but we were tired from driving all day and they gave us the key to two different rooms, one on the river and one adjacent. The front office had a funky smell so I was nervous about the rooms. But both rooms smelled and looked clean. The river facing room had guests next to it, and the adjacent room did not, so we chose that one. Even though it didn't face the river you could clearly hear the peaceful sounds with the slider open. We did haggle the price down a little with the owner. And the lady working the front desk was wonderful. Very helpful with suggestions and offered to put a futon in the room for my daughter. We were told breakfast was not included because the oven was broken. The bathroom was huge and comfortable with a separate shower and tub. Some of the towels were more appropriate for exfoliating than drying off, but I am a little bit of a princess about soft towels. Our shower sprayed water out at the base of the shower head but I think it just needed to be tightened. And the hot water to the shower wasn't as hot as I would like but my husband jokes that I like to shower in boiling water. Bathroom had lotion and conditioner but no shampoo. We didn't ask for it, so I don't know if it was an oversight or if they were out. Fireplace (on a timer) in the room. Super romantic if you travel without kids! The view off the deck was beautiful. Ice machine wasn't plugged in, but they offered to do it and have ice in 30 minutes. The place is for sale, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the future. To summarize, place is in a beautiful setting, is clean and comfortable. Price is a little high in comparison to some other local places. The front desk staff is very friendly. read more
