I'm in love. This festive Mexican restaurant in the south side of the island has everything I could want - delicious food, giant portions, and oversized margaritas with fabulous servers. I am an absolute fan of chipotle enchiladas. They're warm - as far as spice level - and I switch up the protein choice being equally a fan of chicken and beef. They also will provide one of each as well. Nice portions, bursting with flavor it is just so good! I am also a fan of their giant margaritas that drink easy and go to the head easier. I typically only drink these when I want to accomplish nothing for the day. I am particularly fond of their cucumber one as it is less sweet. The service here has always been a delight. Whether we come on a quiet afternoon or a busy evening, whether it is my friend and I or a group of us we are always treated warmly and kindly. As far as price point, it is the same price point as the vast majority of Mexican restaurants in King County with the exception of the one Mexican restaurant in Bellevue at Lincoln Tower which makes every other restaurant look super inexpensive! I would like to tell you about our experience dining this evening at Riviera Maya, but the music is turned up way too loud and so I doubt if you could hear anything I said. we asked our server -- who was lovely and conscientious in every way -- if they could maybe turn the music down, but apparently permission was denied. As intense as the music was, though, we could still hear the vacuum as the staff started to clean things up in the section we were sitting in 90 minutes before closing time. That seems both loud and odd. So, I would say -- nay, yell -- why don't you put a little more thought into the aural experience of your otherwise fine restaurant, Riviera Maya? Really not to my taste at all. Had chicken tacos. Had to drain off the water from the soggy chicken. Seems like there should be something like salsa or sour cream on it. I had 2 bites, 1 bite of beans and 1 of rice. Waitress picked up the plate and didn't mention or ask why nothing was eaten. Must not be uncommon. Totally decent spot. My in-laws like to come here for lunch and finally brought us in for lupper. Strip mall restaurant with a festive vibe and welcoming staff. I really appreciate that they have a vegetarian corner of their menu and that it's not all cheese-heavy. You like vegetables? You're in luck! I shared the butternut squash enchiladas (two enchiladas filled with roasted butternut squash, spinach and black beans smothered in squash based sauce topped with queso fresco tomato and chives) with my partner and was surprised that I was not hungry afterwards. Took my family to Riviera Maya tonight and it was amazing. The recent renovations make the space feel fresh and inviting, and the tequila bar is top-notch -- plenty of options and TVs everywhere for catching the game. We ordered the molcajete, and the steak, chicken, and shrimp were cooked perfectly -- flavorful and tender. What really made the night special was our server, Lupita. She went above and beyond: patient with our baby, kind to my spicy (and picky) mother-in-law, and even handled my equally ridiculous mom with a smile. This place nails both the food and the hospitality. Highly recommend if you're on Mercer Island -- I can already tell this is going to be one of our regular spots. read more

Way over-priced. It was a bit of a shock to have paid $70 for one adult meal and two kids meals (soft drinks for the kids were $4.25/ea). They barely cared that we were there until it was time to pay and then they came back multiple times to check in on us. Enchiladas use small flour tortillas, minimal portions, food is bland. I imagine not much of the ingredients are made in-house. On the positive side, they offer seemingly bottomless free chips and salsa, but the salsa is... not great. I keep trying Riviera Maya because I love Mexican food but this place leaves me consistently disappointed. read more

This was probably my 3rd time here. I was actually semi impressed with this place on my first trip, but I found the pricing and portion to be unworthy of a respectable star rating. On my second visit, the experience was the same, decent food, overpriced. On this third visit, I was actually disappointed. The pricing was still aggressive, the portion was not reflective of the pricing and this time, everything was bland. The carnitas didn't taste seasoned, the beans and rice also had no flavor and the guacamole was thin. This is the problem with all local food. Places that should have a rich, cultural recipe have traded it in for bland food that appears to agree with the unseasoned kitchens of overpaid people who never learned how to cook with spices. I thought this place would be a great alternative to driving into Seattle, but now I can see it pays to just stay on the freeway and drive into the city. Everybody here was really nice and polite, but the good was seriously 1 star, I'm keeping my review at 2 just because of how good the service was. read more

Favorite close-to-home Mexican restaurant. BIG (and good) drinks, BIG (and tasty) portions of food, great service. It's worth eating in the restaurant... er, we needed three refills of chips the other night... and did I mention the huge drinks? This is classic Mexican comfort food at its best; it will fill you up, you will be content, and the prices are reasonable for location. Shhhh. This is a Mercer Island secret. Some of the best Mexican food can be found in a sleepy south end MI strip mall. You will be amazed at the selection of tasty quality dishes that awaits you. The lamb shanks are a savory sensation. Recently had the Cochinita pibil, an outstanding delicious pork dish with generous portions that will leave you satisfied and then some. Sure the prices are a little high (this is MI), but the portion sizes, quality, and taste are great. The service has always been friendly from the hard working staff. The restaurant can get busy and bustling during peak weekend times but I've never had to wait too long. read more

Riviera Maya is a Mexican restaurant on the south end of Mercer Island, and it's a pretty good one, too. There was a lot to choose from, with its large menu and margaritas the size of your face! My friend and I had a good time here for some post-tennis lunch. We visited Riviera Maya on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and the place was quiet, with just one other party dining in, which was nice. Located in a small business strip next to QFC, there was plenty of parking. We were able to be seated immediately soon after we arrived. My friend and I shared the nachos, which was solid. It was the perfect kind of food for after working up a sweat. I also had a jamaica, while my friend had a margarita, which was gigantic. The menu had a lot to choose from, with different, classic Mexican dishes. The portions were large, and we were also given complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip. Lots of food to be had here. Now I know where to eat at after my tennis lesson on Mercer Island. Riviera Maya was a good spot for some Mexican food, with very friendly staff. $12 for a kids quesadilla. Let me be clear. This was one tortilla filled with cheese and folded in half. There was rice and beans as well, but $12!!! I get it. You're in Mercer island. But the kids prices were ridiculous. Service was ok depending on who stopped by. You either got clear questions or miming with hand gestures. It a classic Mexican restaurant decor wise. Typical Mexican food restaurant. Not in a bad way, let me say. They have a sign indicating Being short staffed and to be patient. Chips, salsa and bean dip are served and the margarita menu is huge. I chose crunchy chicken tacos & my friend got a HUGE burrito. The tacos were delicious! Crunchy fried tortillas with chicken, cheese and guacamole. Served with rice and beans. The burrito my friend ordered was a pork, rice, & bean filled monstrosity. Actually I think it was a chimichanga, but, you say chimi, I say burrito. One is friend and is well, not. I had the good luck to take half of the burrito for leftovers later. Mmmm. The plates came with the food and were hot. The salsa had a good kick to it as well. Service was friendly. We've eaten here a few times, both in person and for take-out. The food is really good and the wait staff is pretty attentive and friendly at this strip mall Mexican restaurant. The food was tasty and more authentic than most Mexican restaurants in the Seattle area. They also offer a kids menu with options for younger eaters who prefer things like a burger and fries. My daughter ordered the burger and really liked it. The one downside for me is that they don't put prices on their drink menu, so you have no idea if you're ordering a $10 or $20 margarita without asking. They also don't have a very big beer list and no IPA's, although I'm definitely not marking them down for that since they're more known for their margaritas than beers. They do offer traditional Mexican beers (cerveza's!) so that's a nice touch. The other nice thing is that they use alcohol from a distillery owned by someone in Mercer Island which is another nice touch. read more

One of my go-to Mexican takeout spots. Consistently good food and service (and quick, which is always a plus), and the food portions are always super big (especially for the price). I try to get something each time, but I have to say the chicken enchiladas and the steak fajitas are always my favorites. For one we only went here because we were waiting for our niece at the dance studio next door. Two we weren't even super hungry we got a meal to share and just the whole time it seemed like they were eyeing us after that. Once we finished our meal i got up to go pay upfront and one of the workers came up to us immediately (pretty sure they thought we were going to dip on our tab).. told them that i needed to use apple pay. After we paid we went to use the restroom and as we're washing our hands we see that the woman came to check the bathroom.. as if using the bathroom is out the ordinary. I love this place. We've ordered (all pickup so far) numerous times. I have an increasing interest in Mexican cuisine. NOT TexMex. I am cooking more Mexican on my own and love the Nopalito cookbook (no relation to this restaurant). I am also not a vegetarian but the vegetarian options are intriguing to me at the moment. Riviera Maya's cauliflower enchiladas and spinach enchiladas are DIVINE. Each full plate option I have ordered comes with different beans. One red beans and one black. Both are salted to swoon levels (if you know of Salt Fat Acid Heat Samin Nosrat you will know of the salt "ZING!") Even the sides - refried beans at so many places are an afterthought.
