I searched locally and found Gentlemen's Gallery Principessa in downtown Asheville. Allen, the owner, was incredibly helpful, friendly, and funny. He showed me my options, made some measurements, and had the suit ready for me to try on in three days. Some quick final alterations and I had my suit. The quality is outstanding - comfortable, perfect fit, and a modern classic. I could not be more pleased with my experience. Allen is a pro, and Asheville is lucky to have him and his wonderful business, Gentlemen's Gallery Principessa.

That said, I took a Prada-wearing Italian politician to Jackson's one time, and she must have blown a thousand bucks on "authentic American" souvenirs to bring back to all her European friends. I started calling her "Spaghetti Western" after that. I thought that was pretty funny. Downstairs underneath the Jacksons retail salesfloor is a hidden basement with a working leather shop that makes stuff like the harnesses for carriages that take tourists around Central Park in NYC. So yeah, maybe the desk clerk isn't all that chatty, but it seems disingenuous to say this shop isn't a local treasure, or to imply that they somehow aren't that good at the few things they do--things that are highly specialized, and hard to find anywhere else. My kids were doing a bit of shopping and then ended up picking up a couple of items and I spent most of my time chatting with the one woman who worked there. They did enjoy some of the clothing but couldn't find items that they liked in their size but there were some really nice items in the counter that got their attention. They both checked out some really cool necklaces and we also looked at flasks and lighters. My youngest found a hat that they just loved and took a picture of the label on it with the idea that they would check it out online at a later date to see if they might buy one. Parking is another downside. There's no free parking nearby, so you'll need to use metered street parking or pay for one of the public parking garages if you're driving. I prepaid 1.5 hours and was out of the building in less than half and hour.

There's a mix of eras under one roof and I noticed they have a good selection of men's clothing, which sometimes is a struggle for the guys who like vintage. When I went this time, there was a smaller selection of women's clothing, but most of the pieces seemed to be in fair condition. Spotted a vintage Dior jacket, but decided to not grab it. I'd guess that most of the clothing at the time that I went was from the 1970s-now. Mostly I saw tops, tees, and jackets, along with vintage denim. Parking options include street parking and parking lots where you pay by the hour. I went with the latter as it was more cost effective when I compiled my list of shops to visit in the same area.
