CRUEL, HEARTLESS & INHUMAN I have been a customer of Roanoke Animal Hospital for almost 4 years. It has always bothered me that they don't have enough people to answer their phones. They're never on time, but I let that go because I have had a very good relationship with Dr. Shepherd. Dr. Shepherd told me 4 1/2 months ago that my 14 year-old dog wouldn't make it 2 1/2 weeks to his 15th birthday. He obviously was wrong. I wanted to get a current status on him so I brought him in to see Dr. Shepherd last week. I've had this dog since he was four months old, and I never thought this day would come. It's extremely emotional since I just lost my father recently. The doctor recommended a medication, and I couldn't even think about it at the moment. Again the doctor was late. I just wanted to get my pet back home because I came to the realization that I was going to have to do the unthinkable. I also asked about the biohazard fee since my pet didn't have any lab work or even a thermometer used. I would never charge a customer for something they never received or used. Anyhow, I received both of my pets medical records the next day, and thought it was weird. But since I'm in the emotional throes of having to tend to my dying dog, I didn't think about it until today. I called the office and asked them if I could get a prescription, and they couldn't locate me in their system. It was then I came to the realization that they canceled me as a client. I can't imagine people being so cruel. I spoke to the Liz, office manager, and she basically explained to me that because I didn't pick up the medication and didn't want to pay the biohazard fee, which I did not use, I was a bad Client. These people are reprehensible! I would never take my animals to them ever again. They are heartless, and don't care about your pet or your feelings. They're only in it for the money. read more

The experience I had was extremely upsetting, my angel was at Dogtopia and prone to seizures which is why I felt confident w them (dogtopia is the best puppy daycare) unfortunately Milo had multiple seizures and they brought him there . The entire staff was very unprofessional and when I arrived they put me in a room where they used language that was not understandable, I then asked to see him and they seemed put off. While I held my angel during his last minutes the staff was in the back feet away from me laughing and joking about where they were going for Lunch . The "vet " then proceeded to tell me he was brain dead and there was nothing to do . While I cried and held him the vet asked about PAYMENT . I understand businesses are businesses but to have such lack of empathy and grace during someone's traumatic experience shows me the lack of compassion and character. My angel won't come home so I hope by my review if someone else has a pet that is their child they look away from this establishment and find a private owned vet who knows how to talk to someone who is hurting due to a loss. read more

Not sure about the bad reviews but our experience was great. I called on a Wednesday and they were extremely nice and able to get us in the next day. They understood our concern as we are taking care of our sons cat that was not doing very well and needed to be looked at. We had the cats previous vet records with us and they were able to to determine what was going on with him and what he needed to have done as far as medication to help him feel better and get his vaccinations up to date on a follow up visit in two weeks. Roanoke Vet hospital has an amazing staff. We had an emergency with our 13 yr old Westie on a Tuesday about 2 pm. He was dry heaving and we had no idea why. We tried to call and left a message but I was panicking so we headed over there. We called and told them we were outside. They were fully booked but said they would work us in. About 15 moon later they came to get Diego (Covid restrictions in place) the vet examined him but didn't see anything causing the problem. The Dr called and said we could try some medication and see if it resolved itself or he could go to another place for a scope. I asked what she would do and she said she'd wait. She gave him a shot and sent us home with medication. The next day he was better and 2 days later he was fine! All this for a very reasonable price. Their care and concern is outstanding plus I know that they are not going to run extra tests and charge me for crazy stuff. It makes me comfortable being able to take him whenever we have an issue. We have used their grooming too and loved it. read more

I was very pleased with my first visit at RAH. I'm a long time animal lover and have used the same veterinarian in NOLA for 35 years. Having just moved here, I actually got a referral for a vet before I did a doctor for myself. I have two pugs and took the first to need to go in was Sophie due to her seasonal allergies skin SophiSophflare up and I knew that her daily Benadryl was not working and neither was her medicated bath. I was placed in a room right away. They even took the social distancing precautions with this COVID-19 situation. Sophie was well taken care of, enjoyed her visit even, and the price was very reasonable. I'll be back in 2 weeks for a follow-up, annual visit and to bring my other pug for her annual as well. Roanoke AH goes above and beyond to make my dog comfortable. He has a lot of anxiety going to veterinarians (prone to hurting himself trying to get out of the kennel), and the staff here is just amazing. They do their best to sure he stays as calm and happy as possible. Dr. Noel gets on the ground with him whenever he needs an exam and loves all over him. Liz checks on him throughout the day when he comes for grooming (the groomer is also wonderful- has to be one of the best in DFW). The front staff and techs are so welcoming and compassionate. So. My dog was sick. We took her to Roanoke Animal Hospital to get her shots. She was given a clean bill of health and deemed healthy and fit. One week later she starts vomiting and losing weight rapidly. Still, we were told she was fine. A week later her vomit turned to the color of tar. They have me bring her in, and kept her overnight. She was given a medication to prevent the vomiting, but she still vomited. At that point I was told surgery was necessary because vomiting through that medication meant something awful was going on. So they recommend surgery and I go through with it. I get a call at work - they had opened her and found she had cancer throughout her body, lymphnodes and all. Obviously I'm not angry at them for taking so long to find it. Being a vet calls for diagnoses by exclusion. What angered me - was that not an hour later, while all of this was still very raw - I was called by the front desk to pay. I get it. It's a small business, and that's probably protocol. I'd had to let go of two pets before this. I've had to let go of two pets SINCE this. Never once in those other four experiences was I asked to pay on the spot. I was given time to grieve. I was sent a card, offering condolences. Never ONCE was I asked to pay right then and there, after losing a family member. That lack of compassion spoke to me. Took our Doberman, Cosmo, in today for first time to this clinic. Just needed heartworm test, preventative and routine shots. Everybody was friendly and helpful. They made us feel like our dog was the only one in the clinic even though she was not. Dr. Shepherd spent a lot of time with her. He was very informative. Techs were great as well as the front desk. Price was very reasonable. Glad the closest clinic to my house looks like a winner! read more

I just moved to Texas a couple of months ago, and who takes care of my fur babies is a huge concern for me. I took my little pug in the other day because she wasn't eating. I was seen quickly and given a menu of options to try in various price ranges so I could choose. I took her back today for a dental cleaning, and they did the same thing. I appreciate that. I also appreciate them calling me as soon as she was under and after she woke up to let me know she was ok. They really seem to love taking care of animals. We used this vet for over a year and I feel guilty for trusting my pet's health to them. Over a year ago my dog had a terrible reaction to a vaccine - our old vet paid for the ER bill and had stated in his chart not to give again - when his yearly appt came up at Roanoke Animal Hospital I let the staff know of his reaction. They didn't seem to believe me and asked that I come with paperwork. I presented with the paperwork from my vet and the animal ER. Even with this information the vet insisted that they give him the optional vaccine and just administer with a Benadryl. I naively took this advise. My dog was spared from the initial reaction but then suffered from extreme swelling and needed to be seen again. Unlike my old vet that covered the cost - they charged me for the visit, and all medications provided. I am a pharmacist and they charged me $89 for 28 Cipro capsules - all in all they are profiting at least $80 off of this alone.. I was upset and they said that they would refund the medicine but still charged me $8 to call in the script to Roanoke Pharmacy (who gave me a fair price) - After all of this, the vet told me that he would still give my dog the vaccine again the next year.. Ive never felt more guilty for trusting a group of individuals with my pet's health - it has been a month or so since this happened and my dog has stopped putting weight on the leg that was given the vaccine in. I have switched to another vet that doesn't focus on making profit at the expense of the animals that they treat. read more

This place has been taking care of my dogs for years now. They are great! They know my dogs by name when we come in and always give them great care. I board them here when needed and they get so spoiled...it's great knowing that they get so much attention! Dr Shepherd has always been a caring vet, with common-sense advice about our dog. However, the other vets seem to grossly overprescribe expensive medication. Fungal infection? Ok-let's do an oral anti fungal. Skin infection? Is it REALLY necessary to prescribe a host of wipes and fancy brand-only, super strong antibiotics? They also won't switch to a similar (or generic) drug, so don't bother asking. After 20 years in the profession of pharmacy, I happen to know that there are dozens of drugs that will do the same thing AND are safe for canines. We have spent literally thousands of dollars on our 1 dog in the past 20 months of going to this vet, and enough is enough. It's a shame, because I think that most of the staff is caring and dedicated. read more

During a devastating weather event (Harvey), Small Paws Rescue took many dogs from local shelters to help alleviate the unavoidable load of rescues coming in who were separated from their owners. Many of these dogs are surrendered because of special needs, heartworms or ongoing chronic issues, so as a result it is a huge expense for the rescue group to get them ready for foster or adoption. Terrible service, zero compassion for customers. Sent me home with a piece of paper saying my dog needed surgery, but no one would speak to me or answer questions. This after I'd been taking my pets there for 10 years. Huge change in service, they are now only about taking your $$$.... but don't have the decency to talk to you or answer any questions. Also, just want you to drop off your pet, then finally call you at the end of the day to pick up and no personal contact... just take your $$$$ and if there's something wrong u get a piece of paper. read more

If you want the very best doctors, the most outstanding vet techs, the most gracious groomers and the latest products then Roanoke Animal Hospital is for you. You will walk in and right away be met by an employee who will walk you back to your room - no sitting around in a room full of barking or meowing. The staff becomes family to you and your pets! And if you have one, as I did, that had been abused in the past, they encourage you to do just a "treat drop in" which allows your pet to learn that they are friends there! Mixed feelings. Have gone here for several years. Dr Sheppard is really great but some of the others are not as impressive. It always seems to take FOREVER. This is one thing if it is because they are spending a lot of time with you, but 90% of it is sitting in an exam room waiting. In the past, they have seemed more willing to help when you had an emergency but not so much anymore. I'm not overly impressed and will likely be looking for a new vet. read more

Every single person that worked with me and my dog went above and beyond to make my dog as comfortable as possible and were just so helpful and kind. Don't take your pets there and leave them!!! I picked my dog up after 5 days of boarding and a grooming session to find that she had an open wound on her nose. I addressed the issue with the Office Administrator and she tried to say my dog injured herself by sticking her nose under the kennel but the kennel techs said she does not do that when boarded besides the fact that she has been boarded at other facilities and has never been injured. The Office Administrator was unable to tell me how my dog was injured while in their care. She stated she wanted me to bring my dog in to have a vet look at her. Why would I take her back to the place that allowed her to be injured in the first place??? When I asked why no one noticed the injury and why they didn't contact me to let me know they had no answer but did state that they do notify of any issues. That just made me even more angry because they obviously didn't in this case or she lied to my face. Find a different Vet/Boarding service if you want your pet to be truly cared for. read more
