The place looks posh inside. For Restaurant week, both my dining partner and I love their claim chowder. It was creamy and tasted. I had the Steak & Eggs. The steak was strip steak and was overcooked for medium. The over easy egg was fine. Potato was fried instead of stirred fried, so a little on the dry side. A friend and I met for lunch on 3/22/24. We decided to go to Cardozo's. Unfortunately, no one ever came to tend to us and so we left and decided to come here. A charming restaurant centrally located in the downtown Loop, I was staying at a nearby hotel visiting for work during the coldest day of the year, and very thankful to find this restaurant just a short block away. Me and wife were in town and asked the hotel what they recommend for dinner. This place is what they recommended. We arrived and were greeted by a very friendly host. He seated us right away. The wife and I really liked the atmosphere. It was done really well inside. On to the food. We got the meatballs as an app. We both liked them. They were very solid. For mains I got the steak frites with fries and wife got the rotisserie chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. I got the cookie and ice cream for desert and was extremely happy I did. I also felt the old fashioned I got was of good quality. The wife also like her wine. The steak was cooked really well. It was also seasoned really good. The fries were also delicious. For the price I was really impressed with the taste and quality. The wife's chicken may have been the best chicken I've had. It was fantastic. The mashed potatoes were also amazing. They were very garlic forward which for me was great but if not a garlic fan may not be for you. Brussel sprouts were also good. The host and waitress came by numerous times. The food was amazing and the price for the quality was terrific. All in all this was an amazing dinner and considering price, quality and service I have to say this is a 5 star location. I visited Roanoke two days in a row in April because I was staying at the adjacent hotel. The first day was great. I sat at a small table and experienced excellent service, great atmosphere, and an awesome salad. The second day I sat at the bar and ordered the lobster ravioli. The first ravioli seemed a bit cold but thought maybe I was imagining it... Then when I cut into the second piece it was completely uncooked inside. For my life I could not get the bartender's attention (or anyone else who was behind the bar). Once I got her attention and the manager came, he was very friendly and helpful and they brought me a new meal, but I ended up being there way longer than I should have been and ended up being late to a work event. The manager comped my food and one glass of wine, but had me pay for the second glass. This felt like a cheap ass move on their part considering they served me raw shrimp and I ended up being stuck at the restaurant for twice as long as I intended to. Overall not impressed by the experience. Rating a 2 because the 1st day was good and the server welcomed me back when he saw me on the 2nd day. He was great. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for Valentine's Day and I can't say I was fully impressed, but not disappointed either. It was an okay experience and I may come back during a different time. To start, the food was pretty decent; nothing exceptional but pretty good. I will say, the scallops I had had almost no taste. I love scallops and I'm pretty familiar with the flavor but these didn't have the normal buttery taste I'm used to. The other items on the plate were good though and helped with the overall flavor. The fries with the steak & frites meal were some of the best I've ever had! I loved the added cheese on them. The cheddar biscuits were also divine! Loved those so much. The service wasn't terrible but wasn't the best. I just felt like we were more of a number VS a customer and it could have been because it was a busier evening so that's why I'm not going to fully knock it but it just wasn't what I was expecting. Overall, it was nice and quiet evening and one thing I do want to mention is the more private dining area was nice and peaceful whereas the downstairs was pretty loud, which I really appreciated being upstairs in the quiet for that particular evening, so that was really enjoyable. Great atmosphere, very good food, and excellent service on our latest visit. It's probably a 4.5 but I can't score that. Mostly standard American fare which is not a complaint; it's somewhere you can feel comfortable with the menu (if you're used to this cuisine). Some outliers like lamb with hummus which sounded worth trying, but we were there for breakfast. (It was available though). If you are attending during breakfast or brunch, get a cinnamon roll to share. It's great! It had a little too much icing for my personal taste, but it's gooey enough you can take some off if you're like me. Great choice of cinnamon. You can tell the difference I bet. WORST STEAK I HAVE EVER HAD My girlfriend and I came here for valentine's day this year and my girlfriend ordered the NY strip steak for $67 and i was really excited to try it. Fun discovery when searching for pre-theater dining. Two of us for the pre theater menu and both the salmon and chicken where amazing. They sound run of the mill, but they did things to create interest with these comfort dishes! The rotisserie chicken was seasoned perfectly and not a bit of it was dry (even the white meat) and it was paired with glazed heirloom carrots. I LOVED THE CARROTS and I'm not a cooked carrot person usually. The Salmon was paired with a delicious puree and the mashed potatoes enhanced with pesto. How have I never encountered that... It just was slightly different but went REALLY well with the salmon! The third dish ordered at our table was the lobster ravioli... It was just phenomenal. The theater menu can't with gelato and we both got the pistachio. It was delicious and not that fake pistachio, very creamy, very natural and the simplest finale to a great meal. We had drinks.. Wine drinkers enjoyed they're and noticed a but of Orin Swift/prisoner wine Co on the list. Cocktails were creative and one was not super boozy (the Gryffindor) and one was (the French Alexander) both we're balanced and perfect when I had them. The bubbly refreshing Gryffindor before dinner and French Alexander for the encore after the meal. The bathrooms are a windy maze and could flights of stairs away so plan accordingly! Came here for the holidays, and the restaurant was not very full at all. Service was pretty slow, considering that, however. The inside of the restaurant has a very rustic ambiance. For the table, we got the fried chicken, ribeye hash, shakshouka, and the French toast. The fried chicken was cooked well but had no seasoning, and the hot sauce tasted like Frank's hot sauce. While Frank's is good, I expected something more original for the price of the dish. The biscuits served with the dishes are pretty favorable but are very dry. They are like a cheesy garlic flavor. The ribeye hash comes with eggs, brussel sprouts, ribeye chunks, cheese, and vegetables. The dish seems like it is in a soup since it was very watery for some reason. Unfortunately, the ribeye was also dry, and altogether, the dish didn't live up to what was expected. The shakshouka was also disappointing. I expected much more authentic flavors and spices from this dish, but instead, it just tasted like tomato soup with eggs and potatoes. For desert, the French toast was fine, and the pistachios on top added a great texture to the dish. I like the look and feel of the restaurant, but there are several things that are not executed well with the dishes. I don't think I would want to go back for my personal tastes, but I can see how some of their dishes might be favorable to others. read more

Service was pretty slow for how few tables there were seated, but the servers were friendly and helpful. We walked up to pay because we waited so long after our table was cleared for our check. Not sure if their menu was different from this brunch but some drink items on their menu were unavailable (only had almond milk for non-dairy coffee option, no grapefruit juice). I gave up and just asked for a single shot of espresso. We were excited about the menu as the dishes seemed interesting. The food tasted okay, still healthy (not too salty or sweet) and still edible. However, the overall execution did not meet that expectation. Fried chicken appetizer - the fried chicken was crispy, pretty juicy and had a drizzle of honey. the hot sauce was nothing special, felt like a generic frank's hot. The biscuit had a butter/herby flavor, but felt very doughy/uncooked. I wish it was more flaky. Ribeye steak hash - the steak was cut into cubes, over-cooked, and the pieces were not all cooked to the same degree. The scrambled eggs were good. Shakshuka - this tasted like chunky tomato soup paired with buttery toast. It lacked the spices needed (cumin, paprika, cayenne) to make it a Shakshuka. The toast was good though, crispy edges with a fluffy interior, and a nice butter flavor. French toast - not sure why the strawberry jam was under the toast. We also had to ask for a side of syrup as it didn't come with and wasn't available on the table. The strawberries were fresh. The pistachios were the only thing that made unique, but you couldn't really taste the pistachios, might be better to have it crushed for more surface area. Latte - tiny mug, maybe not even 8oz. They use Sparrow roasted beans so that's a plus, but definitely not worth it here. I would rather go to an actual cafe. read more

For such a beautiful restaurant, the food is mediocre. The food quality and taste does not match the atmosphere or the price. We made reservations for brunch during the holidays. It was nice because it was quiet and there weren't too many people. There were a good number of service staff, but the service was extremely slow. It took us about 20 minutes just to get our coffees. They also were out of all of the milk alternative options, which left someone in our party without coffee. They serve Sparrow coffee, but the lattes and coffees are served in very small mugs. For $6, it was not worth it. For food, we ordered to share: - fried chicken (5/10): the chipotle honey was too subtle perhaps there was too little sauce on the fried chicken. Chicken was well cooked, but very little seasoning or sauce flavor overall. - Ribeye Hash Skillet (2/10) - extremely dried out ribeye, unevenly cooked dish with dried out cheese overloaded onto a single side. Definitely would not recommend this dish. - Shakshouka (5/10): this was the most flavorful dish, but it was not shakshouka - seemed like no spices were used, more like pure tomato sauce. - French toast (5/10): so much potential, but poor execution. There is very little jam on the dish, the pistachios are whole, strawberries seemed a bit old, and it is not served with any syrup. We had to wait a very long time to get syrup. The Roanoke is a beautiful and cozy restaurant in downtown Chicago with an expansive menu. To start, service is amazing: the host and our waitress were both just wonderful and made it a great experience. I appreciate the variety on the menu. To drink, the Timeshare and French Alexander are nice (stay away from the Lafayette - we did not like this so luckily our waitress switched it out for us!). To eat, we split quite a few things. I highly suggest the Campanelle which was a generous portion and the perfect vegetarian entree with a load of hearty mushrooms, spots of ricotta, and delicious truffle flavor. The Buffalo Cauliflower was perfectly crispy, and the Cheddar Biscuits are not to be missed with their incredible honey butter. Nice casual yet polished American restaurant in the downtown Loop area. I ordered the Grilled Mahi Mahi ($26), which was pretty good but the fish itself was slightly burned and not that flavorful. The flavor mainly came from the mango kiwi salsa (though didn't see much kiwi in there) and the banana coconut sauce (although that wasn't that flavorful either). The portion size was a bit small for the price of $26 so not really worth it. As noted though, the place itself is nice with a somewhat upscale American restaurant kind of vibe, a warm atmosphere, elegant decor, and lots of seating. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and the service speed was quick. Overall, I would give Roanoke 3.5 stars, if I could. Usually, lying about the wine you served me even after I question it is an automatic 1-star. But they earn one back on the delicious cheese curds. But don't lie to people about the wine they're drinking!! I ordered the Taylor Fladgate 20-year Tawny Port. I was obviously served a Ruby Port instead. When our server came back, I pointed out the mistake, but he assured me that I had been poured the correct wine, so I asked to see the bottle. He came back with two bottles of Ports that were neither Taylor Fladgate nor tawny and said those were the only Ports they had. Then why did you lie and tell me it was Taylor Fladgate 20-year Tawny?!! That is not okay! I don't care if you're out of the wine I ordered. I don't care if I was accidentally served the wrong wine. I very much DO care if you lie to me about what I was served even AFTER I question it. People who don't know much about wines deserve the chance to learn. They deserve to be served what they actually ordered. Anyone who didn't know better would have thought that the Port they were served was a 20-year tawny, even though it tastes nothing like a 20-year tawny. That is not acceptable. If you want great cheese curds, this is your place. If you want to trust that you're actually drinking the wine you ordered, stay away. read more

Came here before going to a show at the Goodman in the evening. I had never been but was pleasantly surprised that they had a theater course menu. I picked the theater course since it was certainly the most bang for your buck. The rotisserie chicken with the sides was a great portion, so much so that I had to take some to the theater, which the coat check does check in. My date and I did have two problems as the server didn't put in the two changes to the sides we got. They were really sweet tho and let us keep the side it came with and the sides we requested.
