Robbie's Smokehouse is a fun place to go if you like BBQ and all american style eats. I heard some great things about their burgers and large portions so I was really excited to come here last Saturday. We were a group a of 4 and arrived around 5:30pm. The place was already packed, although it has 2 floors I think the upper floor is only used for special events. We were told it could be a 45 min wait but luckily the manager later helped us get a table within minutes. This seems to be a very popular place in town so if you are coming on a weekend make sure to reserve. Robbie's looks like a modern steakhouse/sports bar. There's a big bar in the middle of the restaurant with lots of stool seating and the rest of the tables include some really comfortable sofa type chairs. They have a cool Facebook "likes" counter on the wall that spins in real time whenever someone likes their Facebook page which I thought was a good way to promote themselves. There's a big American flag painting on another wall which is a nice ode to traditional American bbq eats. Our group sampled the steak nachos (gigantic whopping portion that easily serves a meal, not an appetizer), the meat platters which has a mix of brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs, along with the mac and cheese and standard sides like fries, coleslaw, mashed potatoes. The chicken and meats were really tender and juicy however we found that the ribs kind of taste like regular smoked ham which was kind of disappointing. The steak nachos were delicious, the portion was huge and there was enough nacho cheese for each bite which is amazing because restaurants often lack toppings but this was overwhelmingly awesome. The only drawback was the extra charge for sour cream, whether you want some for your $20 nachos or for your baked potato, this sets you back an extra $1.75. I've dined in so many other steakhouses and restaurants that do not charge for this extra so I find that a little cheap for Robbie's. Further, there are no free refills on fountain sodas and certain items like the mac and cheese or sides were quite small. For example the coleslaw came in a tiny plastic cup that was enough for 3 or 4 bites only. Cabbage is something that really doesn't cost much, I think if they're going to serve my meal in a huge fancy square plate, they should have made more of an effort to fill it. For a restaurant that constantly advertises themselves on Facebook with a slogan of "GO BIG OR GO HOME", I was expecting larger portions but the only large plate was the nachos. Main meals were average sized and fairly priced considering there are no taxes but this is in no way comparable to the portion or service you'd get in the states if you were hoping for American dining. If you enjoy a massive food challenge, they do offer a giant burger, fries and pitcher of beer deal for around $120 dollars- if you're able to finish it, it's free. Although the regular portions are not as gigantic as they made it seem, the food was still excellent, I enjoyed every item I ordered and I would consider coming back for their Sunday all-you-can-eat brunch or just to try their deluxe burgers. And how could you even fathom charging me at all for it? And why didn't the manager/owner or chef come to apologize? Interesting story; we met the owner and his finance of Robbie's Smokehouse on vacation in Puerto Vallarta. As one week vacations go, you make friends but usually never see them again...! Well, not this time as our visit to Montreal we were able to go and experience this smokehouse restaurant in kawanahke. The place is nicely decorated with the rugged look of a smokehouse complimented by flatscreens and a full bar. I've heard some good things about this place sad that I can't fully agree with others. Upon arrival the hostess tells us we need to check in our coats at coat check because there's no space left. Once we get seated at the table we notice that everyone else has their coats on their chairs. There were even hooks at the back to hang your things,so not sure why we were obliged to check in our jackets. So much flavour, not overly salty and the clam chowder had actual chunks of seafood pieces. We ordered 2 bottles of wine averagely priced, a cocktail called Khaleesi (taste just like a mojito with less mint). Once the main course arrived that's when things went from delicious to mediocre. Lobster was good, the 911 burger with 4 patties was very dry, not spicy (they use Franks red hot sauce). My Go big burger was good but very very oily, I had to dab it with a napkin. Steaks were average. We asked for medium well they gave us medium, it was too bloody for the person. WHY a 2 STAR it wasn't because of the food it was a manager. Yesterday thought I would go for a nice couple supper, the waiter was amazing the food was amazing.. BUT the manager and the way he addressed his employees in front of us to hear, walking around and dictating in a loud voice, while we are trying to enjoy our supper. Nice restaurant very polite staff. The food is not bad as well. I didn't like that many of the staff didn't wear masks. I had asked our waiter if this was normal and if he could do anything about it. He said he'd speak to them. The bus boy kept his mask on after that while another waiter put it on for like 5 minutes and then his nose started poking out or it was on his chin. I've always been a fan of this place but today I got takeout and for the price I was soO disappointed! Bill was 91$ for a salad, 2 fries and a platter for one. the platter for one was $46, alone and I swapped my 2 sides for Mac and cheese and that costed me an extra $7. The portion was less than a child portion (about 1/4 of the styrofoam container, less than half of a restaurant portion when you eat there).
