BEST DENTIST AND STAFF I am extremely picky about dentists and staff and went through 2 others offices before finding this one. They are realistic about what services and needed and what is not, and they are also realistic about costs. Trish takes the time to explain how the insurance operates. Most places I have gone don't have the patience to explain it, but once educated, its easier to make appropriate decisions. I never have to wait in the lobby and I am in and out of there quickly. They take the time to educate me on the health of my teeth and gums, and take detailed notes to ensure I make improvements. Here's the problem with reviewing dentists: you can review their personalities, their office staff, the cleanliness of their operational areas. But you won't know for 5, 10, maybe 20 years how good that filling or crown was. I've got a year with Bob Cantonwine. I like him. He's a lovely man. Efficient. Professional. Sense of humor. And he does not talk about religion or politics when he's got your mouth filled with hands and instruments like my NoVa dentist did. His office manager, Trisha, is chipper, up-beat and efficient. The assistants and hygienists all seem very professional and caring. The location in PB is convenient with street parking right out front. But I'm a patient guy. I'll wait a while before I make that assessment of how good his work is. read more

Still rock solid. Trish and crew take care of me. Much like going to a mechanic, calling a plumber or heading to my general practice MD, I'd rather not have to go to the dentist, but if I do, I'm glad to have these guys to go to. Dr Cantonwine is awesome! He is such a nice guy and so gentle. The worst is having a rough dentist poke and prod you. The office is great. The dental hygienists are so nice. All of them. The receptionist is awesome. I have a baby and she is happy to help watch her for me. Parking is easy (which is a treat in PB). They also send me nice little reminders for when I am due for a cleaning. The prices are reasonable too. I have insurance but they don't pay the full amount, but it didn't cost me much at all. I started going to this office in 2003 and only left when I moved up to the bay area. I live in the UTC area now, but will still drive into PB for this dental office. The staff is excellent and Trish at the front desk is personable and accommodating I recommend this place for the entire family as my 4 year old goes here and LOVE LOVE LOVES it and my husband goes here for his cleanings and invisalign. read more

Great dentist, great staff. Nobody really enjoys going to the dentist. But when the staff is pleasant, the office is soothing, and the dentist is completely competent and personable, it's a much more bearable experience. They don't keep you waiting more than a few minutes and always have a stack of magazines to keep you entertained. I like that you can take care of your basic dental cleanings and also see a periodontist at the same place. During the same visit if you need to. They also were able to take care of a night mouth guard for me, and didn't charge me extra to come back for a follow up adjustment. Speaking of charges...their rates are comparable to other area dentists. But the real plus is that they know more about my insurance than I do and will always advise me about charges I will probably owe...before I get a surprise bill in the mail from Aetna. read more

I just had my first initial visit with this dentist (based on a friend's recommendation) and the office is full of amazing people. The place was friendly and everyone took the time to explain to me every possible thing that needed explaining. They work with uninsured patients. I had them look at a few things I was concerned about after having left a different practice to see them, and they confirmed that everything was ok (lucky for that other office) but they were never pushy about unnecessary work and were always straight-forward with me. My teeth were in great condition this visit. This is just my first visit. Hopefully I won't have to change my opinion in 6 months after my next one :D read more

I was recommended to Dr. Cantonwine's office after I separated from the military and didn't have dental care. I first visited him after having chipped my [front!] tooth. I had it repaired in Rosarito and while the filling held in place for a few weeks, the amount of damage really lent itself toward veneers, which I had wanted anyway. Trish, the receptionist, was also thoughtful enough to ask when I had had my last cleaning - it had been about a year, because I was so used to the military reminding me when I was due for cleanings! I actually had trouble with my fills and temps while I waited for my veneers to come in, and Allison, Trish & Dr. Cantonwine were so accommodating about fitting me in to last minute to repair them. My veneers are in now and I like them so much I'll probably get a full set. I also had my teeth cleaned and a full dental workup done with Nicola, and as you can tell in the before and after photo, she did a wonderful job. They take Metlife and are very accommodating about working with your schedule - definitely check them out if you're a Navy Reservist, or just someone who would like a great smile! I went to this dentist as a new patient. I called ahead of time to see if I could use the X-rays from my old dentist because I had recently gotten them, and didn't feel like getting more radiation this year. Well, when I got there, I was told by the dental assistant that the X-rays weren't good enough, and they needed to take a whole new set of X-rays. I expressed my discomfort with this, but eventually she convinced me to allow her to start taking them anyway. After about 5 X-rays of my head I asked how many more would be required. She said they needed 5 more X-rays! Are 10 X-rays of someone's head really required for someone that doesn't even have any dental problems!? I said I'd had enough and didn't want anymore. She was obviously really offended by this. I tried to get her to clean my teeth anyway, and she reluctantly agreed and started cleaning, but you could tell she was still seething mad about me not letting her get all the X-rays!! I tried to make small talk about other things to take her mind off the issue, but after only about 2 minutes of cleaning, she basically told me it was best if I just left if I wasn't going to let her have the X-rays. So I left without ever even getting to meet Dr. Cantonwine. And of course, I still got charged for the X-rays and the way they billed it, it was some kind of special X-ray that my insurance didn't even consider preventative care, so I had to pay 50 bucks out-of-pocket. The entire staff is extremely pleasant to deal with and not to mention they do great work. Dr. Cantonwine is the BEST!! I have been going to him for over 10 years now. We even moved to Chula Vista--and still make the drive up to PB. His office staff is wonderful and most of all....Dr. Cantonwine is HONEST and has the best bed side manner. My father in law (from Seattle, WA) was here on a visit and his crown broke off. He was very skeptical about having anyone else work on his mouth (since he had been going to his dentist for 40 years) and he was VERY HAPPY and said he really liked Dr. Cantonwine! I was looking for a new dentist and got a recommendation for Dr. Cantonwine through a work friend. I could not have been more pleased with his office. All of his hygienists are extremely friendly, thorough, and my teeth felt super clean afterward. Most importantly, I've been to other dentists that are constantly trying to get you to buy some crap you don't need. Dr. Cantonwine never tried to push any useless stuff on me and you can absolutely trust his recommendations. Originally I went there because the office was so close to where I lived in PB. Finding a good dentist is tough, I almost think it's harder than finding a good doctor. I saw that Dr. Cantonwine's office had nothing but positive reviews so, I gave it a shot. Lots of dentists try and sell you on all sorts of things you don't need, which is so annoying and they didn't do that, not even once. Trish, who runs the front desk was so nice and pleasant (sometimes receptionists are the complete opposite). Stacey did a full set of x-rays and was super quick! Ana was my hygienist and it was clear that she knew what she was doing, she was super gentle and took excellent care of me. Dr. Cantonwine was thorough and great. Had a great experience with my teeth cleaning. I felt like they did a through job and gave me plenty of education when it came flossing. I went out and bought an electric tooth brush and a water pick. I did get some references to get my wisdom teeth pulled and went with another surgeon but not there fault! I have been coming to this place for the past few years and I always leave feeling great- not the typical post dentist feeling. The staff is amazing (shout out Trish) and Dr. Cantonwine is great. They all make you feel super comfortable and are extra sensitive to patients that have anxiety about coming. I have never enjoyed going to the dentist until I found them. I think Dr. Cantonwine is an awesome dentist. Super gentle, kind and upfront about what's going on and what needs to be done. His office staff is also very friendly and gentle. The only reason I give this practice 3 stars is because their hours have gotten increasingly limited. They are only open two full and two half days per week. I don't know how anyone can get an appointment there!!! If your schedule is not super flexible then this is not the dentist for you. I've decided to change dentists for this reason. I was a returning patient in need of dental help. Trish the receptionist was anything but friendly or receptive and curtly required new paperwork...even though she knew me. The experience gets worse from there. A crown had fallen out and a temporary had been installed. The dental assistants asked me which "number" tooth it was I told her I didn't know. They reacted as if I were an idiot for not knowing and even dumber for having a temporary crown put on. They promptly provided me with an estimate of $1,100 to $1,500 even though neither they nor the doctor even looked in my mouth to assess the tooth! Needless to say, I'll be taking my money to a dental staff who is interested in treating their clients as human beings and not a cash-cow. read more

This is the BEST dentist's office! I've been going to him for years & even though we moved to Carlsbad, both me & my husband will drive down to PB to get our teeth cleaned. They do an awesome job & work on your teeth the entire hour. I've never had to wait...they are always on time. They are 100% honest with the health of your teeth...no pushing products or telling you that you need "deep cleaning" or bleach because your teeth are yellow. And yes, they are baby friendly...the front lady held my son too when he was little and now he is old enough to get his teeth cleaned! They are great with him too! read more

dr. cantonwine seems like a good enough guy, but the office management staff is atrocious. For my first appointment they double booked me. Didn't find out until I showed up at 8:30 in the morning and they told me to come back almost a month later. Not sure how this happened; either they failed to log my appointment or failed to check when making my appointment, but I don't feel like I should have been bumped almost a full month back. Then, when I do finally show up for my appointment, they tell me that I need to get x-rays. Why was this information not disclosed to me in the 6 weeks previously leading up to the appointment, or when I was there the first time? Poor communication. Finally, after receiving my service I go to pay and they tell me that there is no charge because it is a pre-emptive service or something like that. Then a couple weeks later a $60 bill shows up. When I do go to pay the bill in the office and ask a couple questions, no one is there and the door is locked. No note on the door, no nothing. So I call their office and leave a voice mail. I never received a phone call back. So overall, good dentist abilities but terrible communication & management skills. read more
