A fabulous tasting with friends. A friend is a member here and reserved us a lunchtime tasting for 6 in the side yard. Amanda was fantastic as our hostess. We brought our own picnic basket with cheeses, prosciutto, turkey and bread to savor with our wines. Amanda presented each wine with a full description. From our personalized menu, here's our tasting- 2020 Rosé $28. Bright and light for hot summer days 2019 Zinfandel $41 2019 Rockpile Zinfandel $49 2027 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon $65 2019 Zinfandel Matron $49 fooled me, not your usual Zin. Came home with this. It was a great leisurely tasting in a beautiful setting. Our purchases were delivered right to our car. Nice service. Delicious small-lot wines that are hard to find elsewhere, including single-vineyard releases from Rockpile, where the Mauritson family has farmed for 150 years. These wines will not disappoint! It's $30 per tasting, but you get way more pours than on the menu, plus your tasting's waived with just one bottle purchase. We still bought more per person, because I hadn't had such an amazing pinot noir or zin in years. And I drank a ton of wine during covid! Not gonna lie. I love how they print your name on your menu, too. What a nice touch! Many of their wines are organic and natural, and I love that they don't mark prices up for the sake of club discounts. Everyone gets them for the same cost. And you won't quite find them at say, Safeway or Costco for way less like with many other wineries... The staff is so friendly and accommodating. The inside is small and quaint, and there's adorable outdoor seating as well with a beautiful view of the vineyards. Try their pinot noir, organic/natural Sauvignon blanc, any of their more aged Cabernet Sauvignon and Zins. They're all delish. read more

Wow, what a great experience we had at Mauritson. We were 4 couples (family) spending the weekend in the Russian River Valley and Mauritson was our first winery visit of the trip. I'd been emailing Leigh for months and she was so wonderful every step of the way. We had no idea that our experience would be so stellar. We were treated like royalty, with kindness and fabulous stories from Doug, our host, and despite the triple degree temperature, the shade kept us cool and the wines kept us happy. For only $30 pp, we tasted 12+ wines! We spent over 2 hours at Mauritson and ended our tasting with sandwiches in the cellar room and a taste of a lovely port. A huge shout-out and thank you to Doug and Leigh for taking such wonderful care of us. We'll definitely visit again. read more

We went to Mauritson with my brother who is a member. We were fortunate to have Carrie Mauritson give us the Rockpile tour and we're amazed at the personalization of the experience. Carrie Mauritson did an amazing job of walking us through the family history and the rock pile property. Did I mention the wines? Comfortable, cordial and a great example of Zinfandels from the area. They have an attractive indoor tasting area and bar, and a great garden with outdoor seating and lovely views. They are one of the original growers on the steep Rockpile Ridge over Dry Creek Valley which provides for extremely concentrated and layered wines, although their Dry Creek Valley Zin was fantastic as well. Delicious wines at good prices. A definite must stop. read more

Maybe I am biased because I love the people who work here and they treated us so well while we visited the winery, but their wines are incredible. They are well known for their red varietals and VERY good at it!!! They do offer a small batch of white so they can balance the options to please all palettes. I personally love red wines more than white but their chardonnay was pretty and crisp. I went home with their zin, sirah and petite syrah. They were each fruit forward, smooth on the finish and still bold. The winery is located on Dry Creek Road which is incredible right now with fall colors-so now is the time to get there while you can and enjoy the sunshine on the patio and that incredible view!!! read more

I had never been here before as we drive up you can see these beautiful grounds with the little picnic Area with these big bright beautiful umbrellas and it was a gorgeous day, We walked in and were so shocked that there was hardly anybody (Saturday afternoon) whaaaaa... I think only two people, we were greeted by this lovely lady, who happily poured us several glasses for tasting she was so friendly,kind and knew a great deal about the wine, she even gave us an impromptu tour of the winery which is not very big, but did have a very beautiful I'll say wine room full of hundreds of bottles of wine, with a big beautiful wooden table that could handle at least eight people maybe 10 people with a beautiful Crystal chandelier above and would be a wonderful place to have a little Celebration with friends and and drink some great wines, a perfect lil spot friendly people a great experience. Some wineries can be intimidating and can really ruin your day, but this winery will definitely make your day. we all were so happy with our visit here. We did a walk-in tasting here at the suggestion of an employee at another winery. They open at 10:00 when some of their neighbors don't open until 12:00. We enjoyed our tasting here and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We ended up buying the Rockpile Zinfandel, Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel, Mauritson Zinfandel and the Sauvignon Blanc. I wasn't a fan of being given wines to taste that when we wanted to buy them were told we could only buy them if we joined the wine club as they were wine club exclusive. Not a cool ploy. We did not opt to join the wine club. It really turned me off. We enjoyed most of the wines we tasted and it's worth a visit. Just be aware you may be given wines to taste that you can't buy unless you join. read more

One our favorite locales to take WeWine Napa guests in the Dry Creek Valley region is Mauritson Family Winery. With over 300 acres of estate vineyards and close relationships with longtime growers throughout Sonoma County they always do a great job sourcing and managing quality blocks throughout the growing season and only select the most premium fruit during harvest. Each appellation they source from carry particular qualities in either the terroir or the farming style that is consistent with the Mauritson brand - quality. Their renowned Rockpile Zinfandel is intensely powerful & complex and one of the few truly old vine varietals found in the region. My family and I visited to do a Wine tasting, but ended up just purchasing four bottles and enjoying our time out drinking wine with our lunch. The gentlemen who helped us taste the five wines offered did the absolutely minimum and wasn't very helpful in terms of explaining tasting notes and offering his opinions. I agree, there were a lot of us, but it would've been nice to offer some personal selections to give us a better sense of what we're purchasing. The winery is a self-guided tour, so feel free to roam around with signs that guide you along the way. I just expected more from a winery and a wine tasting. It was my first one, and I still feel like I haven't completely experienced going to be winery. read more

I have been a wine club member at Mauritson for about 10 years. Their Rockpile zins are the gold standard for California Zinfandel (even when compared to Turley or Litton Ridge!). I visited 2 days ago for selecting my quarterly allocation and was impressed by every zin I tasted: the new Far zin, the Jack's Cabin and the Pritchett's Peak. Their combination of ripeness and acidity is almost perfect. Other zins I recommend: their Uncle Block and in good years, the Black Sheep magnums. In addition to zins, Clay Mauritson produces in collaboration with restaurateur Charlie Palmer two very pleasant pinots from Russian River and Sonoma Coast. Both are roughly in the same style: midweight, bright and fruity with plenty of cherry flavor on the palate. They are a delightful expression of pinot noir. I would also like to indicate that during many visits over the years, Clay Mauritson and his staff have always been gracious hosts to our tasting groups. In my opinion, this is a must stop on any Dry Creek visit. read more

Best of DryCreek! Another 5 star experience. And I'm not even a member. I have been here about 10 times now and I'm shocked by anything other than 5 star experiences. The staff is excellent and the wine amazing. BEWARE This place CAN get busy because their huge parking area and building size looks like this is a great place to park a bus....so be prepared to have a flood of bachelorettes unexpectedly waltz in and change the dynamic of your tasting experience. But then again that happens everywhere in dry creek wineries. So I just relax and enjoy the quiet days, and meet new people on the busy days..... But then again, I'm a glass half full (of wine) type person. I like to trade wine referrals with people and this is usually on the top of everyone's list. Industry people also love Mauritson and THAT'S saying something. NICK is my go-to guy. He knows our preferences, he always remembers our favorite wines, and he has great local recommendations for other wineries and restaurants! We've LOVE the rest of the staff too; Leigh, Anthony, Tom, and Simone are amazing. I'm not great with names so everyone else there will just have to settle for a big thank you! Another great thing about Mauritson is that they're always pouring a ton of wines. You get to explore sooo many wines in one place that you don't need to go anywhere else. Every time I head up to Dry Creek, I confess - I make a beeline for my favorites. I've always gone right past Mauritson with their cheery picnic area. On a recent trip, my friend and I were playing hooky on a Tuesday -- but some tool in a lifted diesel truck was harshing our mellow by tailgating us (when we were already above the speed limit). We got tired of having to breathe his diesel fumes (he was behind us - how does it work that we could smell it so strongly?) and when we saw the bright red market umbrellas we said "Hey, Let's Go There!" in unison. We arrived to an empty tasting room and a cheery, friendly woman who poured us our first tasting of the day. Delicious Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc -- I bought a couple of bottles and we were very happy to have discovered a new place to visit on our next trip. read more

A simple tasting room, open ceiling, glass-sided, warmed by the sun. Plus, good wines and people. Especially if you like Zinfandel, this is a great place to enjoy. Mauritson has four Rockpile Zins sourced from different vineyards. There are even soil samples from each place for you to see and touch. The soil from Cemetery Vineyard is distinct in its greenish-grey color and slippery feel due to the minerals of the serpentine group. You can do a side-by-side tasting of the four, a good way to take in the overall Zin character and to sense the differences among them. The 2007 Malbec is 100% varietal and it outshines the 2006 one, which is blended with Cab and Cab Franc. Try the '06 Petite Sirah if you want a taste of sweeping tannins. The hostess is gregarious and shares details of the wines with you. Because she's also a soon-to-be mom, she swirls many but cannot sip; I feel for her. What an amazing time at Mauritson Wines, we went in today for wine tasting. From the minute we walked in it was memorable. Matt greeted us and got us settled in for our appointment, what a charming personality he has! Our table couldn't be in a better place, the view is spectacular. Our wine specialist Angelina was equally amazing! Very knowledgeable, engaging and customer service driven. The cherry on top was the Chardonnay, I fell in love with it. To be honest I'm not a Chardonnay fan but this one won me over! I also want to mention how safe they made us feel, they are on top of all necessary protocol Thank you for making our day trip such a lovely experience, especially in these uncertain times. I can't say enough wond things about Mauritson! This was our first visit here, and Rick and Leigh made us feel very welcome. We actually had to leave our tasting early to make another appointment, and they simply told us to come back later and they would finish the pours. Not only did they finish the tasting when we came back an hour later, they gave us a few extra and gave us all of the background information on the winery and the different soils in their vineyards. Highly knowledgeable, friendly, fun, this was our best tasting of the day. And every wine was exceptional! We particularly loved the Zinfandels and bought a bottle of the 2016 Mauritson Zin. We told her we liked cab and she brought a tasting of cab (supposed to have reservations for tastings)... she said we wouldn't be changed for tasting. We became wine club members here after falling in love with this place. The wines are amazing. The staff are so friendly and down to earth. We have brought many friends and family here and they all love it. The port and chocolate pairing at the end is the best. I'm not a port drinker but we always leave with a bottle of this because its so good. We usually end our day here as the tastings seem a bit more generous compared to some other wineries. Nice setting, and good zin and sauvignon blanc, but my tasting at Mauritson ultimately left me out in the cold. Literally. (And on my birthday, no less.) Some wineries welcome new fans and strive to create a friendly, inclusive feel. After all, today's fan may be tomorrows wine club member and futures buyer. Then there are other wineries that seem to cultivate an elite class system where club membership is treated more like a country club, than a wine club. This is the reason we frequent low-key, friendly Sonoma over Napa. Despite a great starter story of a six-generation Swedish sheep family turned winemaker, our experience in the tasting room felt more like a classic tale of the haves and the have nots. While we were there, sports cars pulled up in the parking lot alongside big wine limos with ladies in high heels piling out. This left an impression that Mauritson, despite being a small winery, seemed to be in the country club camp. We started with Jonathan in the tasting room, and enjoyed the education on the terriors and the AVA. It was a nice start. He offered that a tasty zin that we liked that was almost out, for us he could, "scare up a bottle." Later, he drifted off to help other customers. His offer was soundly rescinded by the next person who helped us, Jonathan's manager, who let us know unless we were club members and planned to purchase a case and not a bottle, we were out of luck. Jonathan and the tasting room manager ended up in a somewhat intense discussion about it. It was a real sink into the floor situation. Later were quietly told, maybe they'd sell us a magnum, but at that point we were so turned off. When a customer leaves feeling this way, they are probably not a repeat customer. It should go without saying that even if a mistake was made in extending the offer in the first place, a good business doesn't renege, and certainly doesn't put valued customers (we were in the process of buying several bottles) into uncomfortable situations. The whole time we tasted, wine members continued to arrive for a backroom tasting event. As each member walked in, all attention in the room was sucked in their direction. If you like to feel like a VIP and have that confirmed by wine room staff, then by all means join the club. If you want to have a low-key inclusive-feeling experience, this is probably not your best option. After the weirdness wore off over the encounter, I decided it was okay. If I have to pick a side, I'm in favor of humble, innovative wineries that appreciate all levels of fan-dom. Don't want to be a member of any club that would make a customer feel awkward and uncomfortable. read more

We liked Mauritson enough during our last visit to Healdsburg that we decided to pay another visit this year. The tasting room is cool and modern and the employees are knowledgeable and friendly. The surrounding grounds are beautiful, of course. There are also some picnic tables and chairs outside which is a nice touch. We enjoyed our tasting so much that we left with two bottles - a sauvignon blanc and a pinot noir - though it was hard to narrow down to just two. The addition of a bike rack would be awesome but I can't think of anything else I'd change. Great spot and a must-visit on Dry Creek Road. read more

Aaamaaazzing Zins! Our friend has been a wine club member here for a long time and is good friends with the owners so we definitely had to stop by. They're currently on their 6th generation of wine makers in this family and it certainly shows! The tasting room is decent sized but the counter kind of small. The staff is super nice and they pour quite generously. The tasting menu will cost you $20, unless you're with the wine club. I thought some of the best wines were actually the reserved ones that are only available to the wine club. This was pretty disappointing but you might still be able to get a taste if you ask nicely. It was a tad crowded when we were there so when a large group walked in, they were told they couldn't be accommodated for a tasting. So instead, they opted to buy a few bottles and take a seat outside at the tables under the umbrellas - probably a good option for a larger group. The zins have a nice range of notes depending on the soil in which they're grown. The rockier the soil, the more stressed the grapes, etc. These are pretty jammy zins and are full of juicy berry flavors to really boost those tastes. But if you like it a little more dry, they also had a few that were more earthy. The other reds they have are also quite delicious and they have a very crisp and refreshing Sauvignon blanc as well. In fact, our group ended up getting some of these since the zins are a bit more costly and +$50 a bottle. read more

As I write this review, we are on the eve of our first wine club shipment from Mauritson... that's right, Wine Club Shipment Eve. The glasses have been painstakingly hand washed, the finest cheeses have been procured, and so help me God if UPS screws this up... But seriously, this wine is tops, and I'd highly recommend a visit to the tasting room if you're in Sonoma. We sort of stumbled upon Mauritson during our visit to Healdsburg, and were immediately enamored with their Rockpile offerings. Our pourer (I believe her name is Jan, and I apologize if I'm mistaken!) was funny and engaging, and we learned a lot about the different zinfandels the winery makes. Needless to say, we were so impressed with the wine we decided to have some shipped home to us. We had a fantastic time in Mauritson's laid-back tasting room, and hope to return some day! read more

Not much of a view to look at here. Kind of has a bar feel with bar stools at the counter. This is a no frills vineyard, but the wines and service are great. I was able to get a customized zin tasting that was off the menu. Actually ended up joining their wine club, and I've never joined a wine club before. The black sheep zin is amazing. If I didn't get a taste of that, I probably wouldn't have joined their wine club. Our sommelier started with Tom and while he went on break, his brother Anthony took over. They were both informative and friendly. We were able to try a lot of wines and ended getting a year's worth of the black sheep and a few other zins/cabs. It's possible that our palates were probably tired after 3 previous wineries, though. Folks, here is the mother lode of wineries. This is my favorite winery in all of California, period! Others have some good wines, but Mauritson has many great wines. Unbelievable tasting wines. We dropped in after having a glass at the Dry Creek Kitchen the evening before. Everything was fine with great aromas, nose, and superb finishes. Oh hell, it just tastes like the best wine you ever had, period. Easy off on Dry Creek Road with plenty of parking. Tasting room has a handsome bar to the left. Nicely decorated, and a section with old photos of the original generation of Mauritson's that settled the valley. Very friendly tasting staff. They were efficient, courteous and very knowledgeable. The Rockpile zins are truly world class, IMHO. Clay is the son who now runs the operation with his wife, Carrie. His roots in the valley make him a true wine maker. He is extremely knowedgeable for his age, and his wines truly pontificate loudly his skill set. Complex and full finishes. Paired with the food at the restaurant, the Dry Creek Zin simply rocked. The rare Rockpile (separate appellation) zin simply was out of this world. We joined their club that day, and attended the first winemaker diinner. Fabulous. This is the best tasting overall wine varietals in Dry Creek Valley, and that says it all!!! read more

Clay Mauritson really has things dialed-in. His biggest, most opulent wines are (alas) fermented dry and show enough acid to make them really lively on the palate. I'd almost say his Rockpile Zin could, in addition to being an outstanding cocktail wine, be considered a "food wine". Almost. We'll just leave that description for the more intricate, feminine, and balanced Bordeaux-varietals that he also produces. If I have any complaint, it's that Mauritson has too many parking spaces. Too much parking leads to mobs. And mobs lead to mob behavior, especially during that once-enjoyable futures-oriented low-key event known as Barrel Tasting Weekend, but which has now become Inebriated Frat Boy & Marina Bleach Blonde Drinkfest. Less parking would constrain the mob scene. read more
