It was a nice experience to just chill and relax at this decent Mexican place at Downtown Sunnyvale that offers the Mexican food staples and a good list of Margarita cocktail mixes. I tried their ceviche, fish tacos and the Top Shelf Margarita. The drink was good and has a nice kick to it. Bonus is that it didn't give me a headache, just a nice buzz. The ceviche is more on the lime and spicy side. It has fish for the meat. The fish taco was good enough, but I have tried better options. Overall it's the experience, the food, and the drink coming together that earned them a 4. It's also nice that they are open when most of the other restaurants are closed between 2pm-5pm. Also, the server noticed something unusual on my drink when he was putting it down on the table, it was a small slice of cucumber that was in there by accident and he pointed it out on the spot and got me a replacement. I hate writing bad reviews, but if you are looking for good mexican food this is not it unfortunately. The mole was not good honestly you can literally taste when is from the can and the rice is just so dry the beans are the only good thing on it. If you wanna eat chile relleno and if you are thinking is like the one your mom used to make nope think again. Overall the food is not authentic and everything takes like it is out of a can food. Being from Texas, I'm used to scrumptious Tex-Mex cuisine. With this in mind, the refried beans at Roberto's Cantina were runny and lacked flavor on the Nachos order. On the order of Pollo Al Xocoqui, the serving of chicken was generous and the sauce was flavorful. Overall the food was filling and satisfying. The service was inattentive. The waitress brought our food to the table and never returned until bringing the check. We got up twice to request a drink refill. Ambience is great - good location. read more

We got a pitcher of the Mango Margarita to share; I tried a sip and it was perfect. Just the right amount of alcohol and so good you'd want to finish the entire thing yourself! I ordered the Shrimp Fajitas (replaced the rice and beans with a mixed green salad), which was just beautiful! Perfectly seasoned, shrimp was cooked just right, and there was a really good ratio of vegetables to the shrimp. I really appreciate how there were actual veggies in here - broccoli and carrots - as compared to just the bell peppers that most places serve. Only negative part was that there was too much oil; I had to pat it down with paper towels. Really good meal! Outside dining during the pandemic! Roberto's is one of a dozen restaurants on Murphy Street in old downtown Sunnyvale. Santa Clara county has banned indoor dining for the past 4 months since March 17. Outdoor dining allowed June 5. Sunnyvale closed Murphy street to vehicle traffic, so that the restaurants could expand their outside dining. Each restaurant put out tables 6 feet apart along their street front under sun umbrellas. Roberto's has 10 four person rectangular tables, and 3 two person rectangular tables outside. We take one of the two person tables, even though most of the 4 person tables are occupied only by 2 people. Our table is about 24" x 30", more than enough for several plates of food. Wife orders the $19 Rajitas Poblanas with shrimp, while I order the $19 Pollo Al Xocoqui. Both of us masked while ordering, with all the staff masked. Meanwhile we get complimentary chips and salsa, one cilantro, and one spicy salsa. While we are waiting for our meals, we notice we are one of the few couples who are masked the entire time. All other seated customers not wearing a mask. Santa Clara county requires all restaurant staff and all customers to be masked at all times, except when putting food or drinks into their mouths. This includes all times prior to the meal arriving, and all times after the meal is finished. This is to protect fellow customers and staff from getting infected, particularly when talking. Customers at the same table must be from the same household, to prevent the spread of the virus outside the social bubble. Unmasked people walking on the sidewalk right by our table, and customers waiting for a table congregating within the 6 foot social distance of us. The Rajitas Poblanas is a creamy sauce dish with shrimp, onions, and roasted chile. Mexican rice and black beans for her. Great dish, tasty and spicy and very filling. Next time I'll get it with beef. The Pollo Al Xocoqui is shredded boiled chicken breast covered in a sour cream based sauce combined with two types of chiles. Not impressed, as the chicken has very little flavor on it's own. I've had this dish before, despite the menu wording saying unique sauce. Comes with corn tortillas, mexican rice and refried beans. Agave Cantina and Fiesta Del Mar Two in next door Mountain View serve Enjococado, or Great Grand Ma's special sour cream sauce with chicken breast -the very same dish. Sorry it's still a three stars, same as my previous review from a few years ago. Food is good but just not that special considering the price. When we got there we waited about 10 min for someone to seat us. This was during CV19 and it's all outdoor seating. There were open tables. Waiters walking past us back and forth. Host was too busy gabbing with a table for the ten minutes. I found it a little annoying. Chips here are very good. Perfectly crispy and salted. Service was good once we were finally seated and ordered. Wife liked the Chile verde. Refried beans were yummy. My shrimp was also good. Very garlicky so watch out for that. Perfect Spanish rice. I am a huge fan of family run businesses. I met Roberto almost at the end of our dinner and he is just such a nice person who is passionate about his restaurant. I went on a Sunday evening with a group of friends and we sat outside under heat lamps. I really liked my carne asada salad. Others got the milanese, ceviche, and tacos a la carte. My friends loved the range of tequila choices. I stuck to wine and they were generous pours. I will definitely return and try come of their specialty dishes. read more

I love going to Murphy street, sitting outside of Roberto's for dinner or even Linner. I usually get their ceviche as an appetizer and Carne Asada steak plate as my entree. I definitely recommend trying one of their margaritas, particularly their Cadillac Margarita. The service is always great but they are always busy so have some patience. read more

Roberto's was a disappointment. The food is just mediocre. The re- fried beans are almost liquid, the chile relleno was not filled at all, but split open and topped with cheese. It was very tough! Nothing was particularly hot and the child's plate of quesadilla was rather sad looking. There is clearly no attempt at attractive plating. The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired. The floor and the window sills were attractively tiled and clean, but the tables are stark, the napkins paper and the noise level is ear-splitting. The server was friendly and prompt. He brought the margaritas quickly, but I found them t be rather weak. Parking can be an issue on Murphy street, but there are parking lots behind the shops. read more

This local cantina tucked away on the South Murphy St strip in Sunnyvale has a menu of Mexican favorites served with standout flavor and large portions. When we asked Mike, the bartender & owner at Rabbits Foot Meadery who is as local as one can be, for a nearby foodie recommendation, his first suggestion was Roberto's. "And you have to try the Pollo Al Xocoqui (that's pronounced Ho-Ko-Key)," he told us. Having never heard of Ho-ko-key chicken before, I had to have some. Atmosphere is simple, patio seating in front, a mid-sized dining room with a small bar and several wall mounted TVs, and a window that runs long the length of the dining room that stretches long and thin to a back room providing additional seating. Brightly-colored tile gives the room a festive feeling. Service is quick and friendly. Center stage at Roberto's is the food. We ordered queso, which is unlike any I've had before. It's more cheddar than the typical creamy cheese dip. And Mike was right about Pollo Al Xocoqui being an excellent dish. The chicken is covered in a savory and creamy sauce, served with tortillas. Wifey and I were strolling through downtown Sunnyvale hunting for dinner. Roberto's Cantina has just the right size of crowd: full enough to identify as popular yet just a couple tables open so we wouldn't have to wait. Water diet so we saved margaritas for another day. But looks like that's definitely worthy of a future visit. We both did combo plates. Wifey did fish taco + pork tamale. I sampled both and they were good. I especially liked the cook on the fish . It had a nice grill flavor. I went with carnitas tostada and chile relleno. The chile relleno was so-so. The carnitas tostada though was the stand out for me. Really fresh, crispy tostada coupled with flavorful carnitas that had a bit of crisp and a cool layer of lettuce and guac. I could've gone for seconds on that. Chips come with a red and green salsa. I came in with low expectations as it's hard to find a place that will wow with so many restrictions. We are doing dirty keto and I thought that without the rice and beans for each entree I would leave underwhelmed and still hungry. I was quite wrong! I went to the bar for a Margarita but was harassed by someone who frequents the Bar. Why? I was conversing with a lady and that guy kept bumping into me with his body several times. The food was even better. First they bring out a heap of chips with a red and green salsa. The green salsa might be one of the best salsas I have ever had. I just couldn't stop eating it! So fresh and tasty made from tomatillos. The main meal the birria de res WAS . It seemed very authentic and there was an abundance of tender beef in the tasty broth. It went so well with the fresh tortillas they gave and the Mexican rice. You have to get the birria just cause of that phenomenal broth with so much complexity it was a little spicy but not too much and it was quite salty and rich. Then to cut all the fattiness out we had to get some flan which was jaw dropping. The flan was so creamy and so sweet. The bottom of the flan was the best part for me it was soft and had a nice milky texture. The flan also definitely had some condensed milk in it which made it even creamier. The service was ok everyone was kind but no one was paying that much attention to us or anything special. Got 2 pitchers of margaritas, but fyi, they only salt the rims for fruity drinks if you ask! Got the birria; great flavor but the meat was a little dry unfortunately. Not many places serve Caldo de Pollo (chicken soup) and we enjoy this version from Roberto's Cantina for take out - the soup comes with diced avocados, tomatoes, onions along with rice and generous portion of shredded chicken. It's bundled with tortillas of your choice - corn or flour. Let's talk Orange Sauce! I have tried many around the area and Roberto's is the best. Not too spicy tangy deliciousness. Besides the half order of chicken nachos the ONLY thing I order here every time is Chicken Enchiladas with Grandmas Orange Sauce! It's amazing! Anytime I've Yelped a local Mexican restaurant, this place has never shown up until just recently! I was in the mood for enchiladas and found this spot in Downtown Sunnyvale. The staff is super friendly and quick on serving dishes. The chips and salsa came out immediately! Speaking of, they brought out the guacamole the moment I ordered it. Hmm. This is where I knock off a star. It wasn't the freshest tasting guac. It seemed like it was just sitting in the fridge and it almost tasted like it was blended in a blender... if that even makes sense. I'm more of a chunky guac kinda gal. But the best part? My chicken enchiladas. I ordered the creamy chipotle sauce which wasn't too spicy! It was delicious. The chicken was white meat; huge plus. And the beans and rice were actually good! I can't believe that I've lived near Roberto's for so many years and never ventured to try. I went maybe 4-5 times since last December and won't stop shutting up about the Pina Coladas to anyone who will listen to me. I love that it is never busy in the bar area. The food is always fantastic, (give or take a few items that could be a little warmer on some visits). I love the item plates, the rice and bean sides are always s e a s o n e d. There was nothing special about this Mexican place. It was nice to have free salsa and chips and the green salsa tasted very fresh. My boyfriend got the combination plate, with 1 enchiladas along with rice and beans. The beans were nothing special and was almost bland. The rice was also just standard Mexican rice with a few veggies (like corn) in it. I ordered a quesadilla, which was an appetizer. It was a basic quesadilla, but they put some red enchilada sauce or something in it. It came with a light salad, guacamole, and some sour cream. We both tried to eat light, and this did the trick, but the food was nothing I would come back for and almost kind of bland. It was 730 pm on a Saturday. Service was quick and the restaurant was about 1/3 to 1/2 full, which was kind of empty compared to DishDash next door (which is where we wanted to try but couldn't because of the 25 min wait). Area around here is dirty - beware, nothing fancy on this "historic" Sunnyvale street - outdoor seating with several restaurants close together. Robertos Food is NOT up to par...bland carne asada and do not order a chile relleno - it's not the traditional "breaded" type - it's basically a sliced opened chili with melted cheese - what?? I could not believe it. Will not return. Next table had a couple with a pup in a stroller - soon the dog was eating from the stroller to the chair and eventually reached to the table and food splattered everywhere. And left a mess. Needless to say I'm not a fan of outdoor seating. The waiter later said he thought they had a baby in the stroller. We clearly could see it was a dog.
