Located in a plaza, there was plenty of parking. There were actually a decent amount of customers inside and outside on a Wednesday afternoon. There is space for large parties as well. The servers were friendly and always checking up on us and seeing if we needed anything. Chips and salsa were a nice complimentary addition to the table. We ordered carnitas sopes which had a nice citrusy taste. The carne asada was not dry and flavorful. The dough itself was not crispy and pretty doughy in texture. It could not be eaten with your hands because it was too wet and would fall apart. The chicken in the mole was super tender and the mole sauce was more on the savory side rather than sweet and had a bitter taste. The carne asada burrito was okay. It had rice beans and meat throughout however the tomatoes, sour cream, and guacamole were only placed in the middle of the two halves of the burrito. There was no description for what would be in the burrito so I can't complain. The carne asada itself was slightly over salted. I ordered online and the order was ready by the time I got there. Tia Juana is located in a strip mall, plenty of parking. I got in and out in seconds. I just headed to the counter up front and they handed me my order. I think the horchata might have been sitting for awhile because the spices all settled at the bottom and we wound up adding ice and stirring it up. Not a complaint, but that first sip was THICC. Their chicken mole is especially noteworthy, as it the chicken is moist and perfectly cooked and comes with a flavorful mole sauce. I have had this dish in several places and this is definitely my favorite. Shrinkflation be hitting hard at Tia Juana Mexican Grill.... It was my first time having to ration tripe like it was a famine. Because they serve up the smallest "large" menudo I've had for $16 (pata took up a good portion of the bowl): https://tinyurl.com/mvfrafd6. When the server brought it out, I thought they ran out of large bowls and had split into two small ones. She confirmed we were being served a large which is less than half the portion from eateries I frequent in The Mission and Excelsior in the city. Small size aside, how was it? Menudo is all about that meltingly soft offal in a soulful broth. This one not so much. The skin on the pata (pig's foot) was still crunchy, as was the honeycomb tripe. The hominy was tender tho. The broth was devoid of any flavor. Doctoring it up with the accompanying white onions, dried oregano, chili peppers, cilantro, and squeeze of lime helped a little. It's served with your choice of corn or flour tortillas. We choose flour and it's your standard industrial ones. They provide complimentary chips with red salsa that low key reminds me of Pace Picante. It's free so no complaints. We ordered a small side of guacamole (not the appetizer size) for dipping. It was half an avocado mixed with a chockfull of onions...steep for $8. Service was very fast and the busboy was such a sweetheart (hence the 3 stars). He brought TT a bowl of water without asking. ASK for an itemized bill! I was shown a non-itemized bill with the total of $29.14 but when I received the receipt to sign, I was charged $30.24 (pre-tip). This is not an isolated experience if you read other reviews. The only logical explanation is they charge a credit card surcharge. I don't mind paying a cc surcharge but they need to be transparent and communicate this to customers. Overall, I know Tia Juana has a loyal following in Sunnyvale but kinda I'm surprised by the high ratings. Maybe we ordered wrong or it was an off day for the menudo. They've been a neighborhood staple for over two decades so they're obvs doing something right! read more

The customer service was just not responsive or respectable. I am a Mexican American and I was treated as so I felt uncomfortable and very unwelcome , but as I watched people come in and be seated speaking in Spanish to them an catering to them. No once was I asked if I was ok or needed anything. The food display beautiful, but such a disappointment I ordered the Chili Verde enchilada plate with a beef tamale beans and rice. The enchilada was not good the meat was like yesterdays overcooked and dry, beans were watery no flavor but a whole tone of cheese on top, the tamale if that's what you could call it was the worse I've ever had the masa was chewy and beef inside was so dry, the rice was the best thing after adding salsa and salt. My husband got the Menudo total flop they gave him no meat or tripe. All was just bone and Fat only hardly any hominy. As I said this was a huge disappointment. I was a Sunday morning and I'm sure this is just hangover food that you don't care for the taste just food. Tijuana is our favorite Mexican grill. We love the owner, Greg, and come almost every weekend. All the staff knows us and knows exactly how we like our food, because we ordered the same thing every single time. Their salsa is always fresh and always a little bit different and if you ask Greg about his secrets, he won't really tell you, but he'll bring something special out from the kitchen for you to try. Came here because speedys was closed and learned it was a sister restaurant :) I loooooove the chipotle enchilada sauce at speedys so was hoping for something similar here. Unfortunately they didn't have it but they had red sauce and mold which were both solid! the enchiladas rivaled speedys with maybe slightly more cheese. The rice and beans were about the same! They also served the same chips and salsa. The restaurant was cozy, good service, and felt comfortable. Overall I thought it was a great meal with a more sit down vibe compared to speedys. Best by far mexican food in around Santa Clara or bay area and I am picky when it to authentic Mexican food

Years ago this was a good Mexican restaurant with reasonable prices. However, what ruined it for me was the lack of basic hygiene and the incredible rudeness of one of the waitresses. The waitresses handle menus, cash, cards etc. and then reach into the bin of chips with their bare hands and drop them in the basket to serve without ever washing their hands. As for that horrid waitress, she could not be more rude and unfriendly. We and our friends are always friendly to staff. Many people in our usual group have been offended by her manner. She is crude, mean and doesn't care about the customers - except for the guys at the bar who she flirts with and uses their same vulgar language. read more

Love this place! It has been our family's go-to Mexican restaurant for over a decade. This family owns both Tia Juana and Speedy's Tacos in the same plaza, where parking is ample. The staff is friendly and attentive and recognize us when we come, which is about once a month. They have a couple of TVs that always have sports on which is appreciated by my husband and son and a great atmosphere to watch a soccer game! Tonight my husband and I split the 3 item dinner. We chose 2 cheese enchiladas with green sauce and a crispy chicken taco with rice and beans. I also love their sopitos with Chile verde, tostadas, and fajitas. Our son got the Chile verde burrito and our daughter got the 2 item dinner with a tamale and crispy taco. All of our plates were scraped clean. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by their chips and salsa and rice and beans first. They are all fantastic here. All the dishes are flavorful and the meat is always tender. I have not had Mexican food until I ate here! Living in the Bay Area my whole life, I've definitely had Mexican food before but not like this! Hopefully that explains any confusion my first sentence may cause hahaha. I feel like I have been reintroduced to Mexican flavors because everything here was PACKED with SO MUCH FLAVOR. I LOVE how spicy their complimentary salsa is and how crunchy and crispy their complimentary chips are. Most places do not make it this spicy or this fresh, and I could just eat these alone as my meal, LOL. The service here is also incredible. Our server was so sweet and polite. She was very warm, welcoming and answered any questions we had. I got two enchiladas (one with salsa verde and one with the red one) with beans and rice. OMG so much flavor. The meat was so tender and juicy. The plates came hot and they were fresh! The salsas are the real star here. The spice level has such an amazing kick and the ingredients are so fresh maximizing on the flavors. I also love that there's horchata here. It's more on the milkier side but still so good. Good spot in Sunnyvale for Mexican fare -- great authentic food and nice environment! We stopped in on a Friday evening and there was no wait and plenty of parking. Service was great overall and we got all of our food relatively quickly. They start you out with complimentary chips & salsa which were fantastic. Then, I got the Enchilada California with chicken which came with a side of rice and refried beans. The enchilada itself was AMAZING -- I really enjoyed the red sauce and was scooping it up with every bite. My partner ordered the Carne Adobada though it seems as if they mixed up the order and gave us the Carne Asada instead. He didn't mind and the food was still great in terms of flavor and quality. First time ordering from Tia Juana Mexican Grill via Door Dash. Ordered 3 Combo Plate - Chicken Enchilada, Beef Tamale and Crispy Beef Taco. The Taco was very flavorful, however, it was laying in some sauce, so by the time I got it, it was very mushy and falling apart on one side (it was in a separate container). Could not even hold in my hand. So, not crispy shell at all. Highly recommend that for TO GO orders, ensure to keep sauce separate and vent container. 3 Stars (4 for taste, -1 for being mushy) The Beef Tamale was very small (~4.5") and almost inedible. The beef was so overcooked or reheated (pretty sure) that it was rock hard, and could almost break your teeth. I would actually give just the Tamale a 1 Star. The Chicken Enchilada was extremely flavorful and highly recommend (deserves 4 Stars). Definitely order this. One con about ordering via Door Dash, I could not write any Special Instructions. Had to actually call to substitute extra rice for beans (don't care for beans). Very happy that they were very accommodating and correctly made my order. read more
