Had a work related meeting in Sunnyvale. Being unfamiliar with the area, I went Downtown to find a place to eat and came across Roberto's. I thought the menu was overpriced, but then again I was in Sunnyvale. We ordered Carne Asada Tacos, Enchiladas, and a Chicken Burrito, the burrito was a tortilla with chicken inside, cheese on top, and sauce, nothing else. The chicken was over cooked and chewy. The carne asada was decent, but the tacos had more cilantro that meat. The best thing they had to offer was chips and salsa. For the last price points, solid 2 stars. read more

Recently we visited this place to get our Mexican food fix. Loved the food and the ambience. We were not super hungry so we decided to get a single entree with 2 dishes and we shared it. This place is located in Sunnyvale downtown, where free music concerts are conducted on Wednesday evening(that's when we visited ;)) We tried to get a place to sit outside but couldn't since it was a busy evening for the entire neighborhood. The server happily seated us inside. Chips and 2 types of salsas were served as soon as we were seated. Both the salsas were equally delicious but I loved the spicy one the most. Next we ordered an entree with chicken enchilada and chicken tacos that was served with rice and beans. The portion size was perfect for two of us. The tacos were fresh with homemade feeling and it reminded us of food in Cabo, Mexico..yes it was that close to being that good. The enchiladas were fresh and delicious. In addition to the food, we ordered Sangria and it was delicious. It had fresh cut apple pieces that made it taste fresh. Have tried Sangria at many places but have never seen fresh cut fruit in it. Summary: Close cousin to Fiesta Del Mar in Mtn View, strong/tasty margaritas, variety of shrimp dishes, large portions, try the Xocoqui, pricey for lunch Details: This is the same Roberto from the now-closed Fiesta Del Mar 2 in Mtn View. Thankfully, the food, ambiance and servers are all better than the replacement Agave on Castro. There's no hostess stand so it can be a bit confusing when you walk in - hang out by the front door and someone will tell you how long the wait is. Come early on weekends. The Xocoqui (Ho - Co - Key) here is similar to the Enjococado (aka Grandma's Special) from La Fiesta although this one is thinner and less spicy. The Rajitas Poblanas is my favorite item on the menu -- the portion is huge and there's just the right amount of chile. The Chile Verde is also quite good -- I really like the green tomatillo sauce. Luckily they bring some with the chips; I always ask for extra. Some of the reviews have mentioned that the pork and beef are more flavorful than the chicken. I agree but there's nothing wrong with the chicken. Did I mention the margaritas? The house margarita is quite tasty and is made fresh without the usual industrial mix. A pitcher contains 5 glasses and is $30. On a recent visit, the Habanerita (spicy marg) wasn't that spicy. Lunch is only a few dollars less than dinner which makes it a little pricey. Stopped by for the annual pilgrimage to celebrate Cinco De Mayo and had a great time. We were lucky to find the last two seats at the bar. We spent the next couple of hours enjoying street taco's and fresh ceviche along with endless Margarita's and watching some sports on the various TV's. Roberto and his whole team were on point with smiles and service that rivals anywhere. Lots of regulars go to Roberto as he has been in the area for 23+ years at various locations. On Cinco De Mayo we see a lot of the same faces year to year. Food - I have never been disappointed with the food. Roberto's offers a wide range of dishes from vegetarian to full on carnitas platters and everything in between. The salsa served with the endless chips are amazing. Both red and green sauces with varying "heat" will satisfy anyone's need for chips and salsa. My person recommendation on the menu is the Ceviche, Rojas Poblanos or the Carnitas in any of ts variations. Drinks - Great selection of very cold Mexican beers on tap. One of the best selections of tequila in the bay and the knowledge to walk you through them all. For the newer hipster types.....LOL........they also have a really nice selection of bourbons and bitters. If you want a margarita you will also not be disappointed. They are my favorite. the homemade sweet and sour makes the difference. A classic house Marg on the rocks will do you right. Service - As someone that has been going to see Roberto since his day at FDM2 I may be the wrong person to comment on the service. I personally get great service, but at times as with any restaurant it can be slow for varying reasons. As long my margarita glass, snifter of tequila and/or beer is full....they can take their time. I am no rush and enjoying the time. All in all it is my favorite place for the full experience of Mexican food, drink and hospitality. BEST MF CARNITAS ANYWHERE ANYTIME. My favorite part of the carnitas is the crispy edges... well, somehow, the cook made the carnitas almost ALL crispy edges. Maybe he overcooked them on accident or there was a fire but they were the best. They taste awesome even without adding either of the two fresh, chunky, cilantro and onion heavy salsas (red and green) that come out with the cold hard (but free) chips. I got the carnitas burrito w/ rice and creamy refried beans : I ate just the meat first, and then the tortilla afterward is like a super cheesy quesadilla. It's like they melt cheese on a tortilla and then fill it with meat. That's a good day. The place is cool. Good service. Flat screens. Quirky art. A five seater bar adds to the ambiance. I'm a big supporter of small family-owned businesses. And, I know how much a negative review can impact them, so these days I try to give small businesses 3 stars or higher. Unfortunately, I can't even with Roberto's Cantina. The kitchen seems to take no pride in what they do - the food was outright terrible and made with poor quality ingredients. This is not a cheap place either, entrees are $14-$21. Even the basic staples like beans, rice, and store bought tortillas were no bueno. Frozen corn and carrots in the arroz though - what the heezy? It's not worth getting into further details or posting food pictures because I wouldn't advertise this place. Sadly, the food could not be salvaged by the customer service because it was non-existent. Service was painfully slow, and the staff was cold, apathetic, and couldn't be bothered. No check-ins, no water refills, and I had to go up to the counter to pay our bill. Mind you, they weren't even busy. Since we spent most of our time waiting, I had plenty of time to notice they seem to be selective in which tables they're attentive to. Another yelper (Nate G.), a longtime customer stated in his review that the staff pick and choose who they want to be friendly to. Sounds about right. Went here on a weekend mid-afternoon. Most other restaurants on this street were closed, so we came here. I ordered two tacos and it was pretty filling after eating just one. We had the following: - Enchilada with Carnitas: I'm not normally a red meat fan, but the carnitas were so tender and well flavored. This was my favorite dish of the night. - Quesadilla: not bad, but nothing special, will probably skip next time - Chicken Burritos: They don't stuff the burritos, so it almost looked like an enchilada with just cheese and chicken inside, and rice and beans served on the side. 5 of us ate here and we tried a variety of dishes. We ordered 2 plates of bacon wrapped scallops for the table. They were served on a plate of delicious creamy sauce. The chips and 2 salsas, one red, one green were spiced just right. I had a combo plate of a carnitas enchilada and a tostada. The carnitas were SO good, and next time I will order the carnitas plate! My sister had the carne asada taco and quesadilla combo and she loved it. My aunt had a burrito and was only able to eat half, it was that big. My cousin had the garlic shrimp which was delicioso! My brother had the chile verde, I think. All the dishes were served with beans of your choice and rice. We also enjoyed margaritas, beer, sangria and a specialty Negroni with mescal, all very good. Came here for a work lunch with my boss and was really impressed. They were super busy during the lunch hour but we were greeted and seated right away. The chips and salsa were great, a light green salsa and semi spicy red salsa. I ordered the two taco plate, carne Asada and chicken on corn tortillas with rice/black beans. The food was fantastic, both meats were cooked, and seasoned perfectly. I have been to DT Sunnyvale before and I am surprised i missed this restaurant. Roberto is always around, a really friendly host, and willing to help choose a tequila, mezcal, or drink for you or to talk about his favorite foods too. I've recently enjoyed their Mole and Xocoqui plates as they are flavorful and not your typical Mexican taqueria foods. I've been most impressed with their Camarones a la tequila as well, which are melt your face off spicy, unlike their a la diabla, which is normally really spicy but here is just so so spicy but still was flavorful and good, so, you can't go wrong. read more

Tried the chicken soup and the fish taco. The fish taco was moist enough but bland and uneventful. Just a handful of iceberg lettuce and the same salsa that comes with the chips dropped on top. I ended up picking the fish out and leaving the rest. The chicken soup was flavorful, if a little salty, and had plenty of chicken, fresh tomato, avocado and rice. It's a huge bowl as well. I wasn't expecting that, so I could only eat half. If you find yourself hungover or hit with the flu, that soup will set you right. I tasted my friends mole and it was very nice. Smokey and tasty. My big problem was with the service. It took at least 20 minutes for someone to come over and get our orders after menus were dropped off, no one ever came back to ask if we needed anything else and then I actually had to get up and go get someone (who was busy talking to her friend) to get our check. I believe this place has been around for a long time, I don't remember the last time I had come here for lunch... I made it here at a friend's request (he is a vegetarian and it is a great option for anyone who follows no meat diet). The place is located in downtown Sunnyvale on Murphy. It looks small from outside but has ample seating. We were seated right away and our friendly server was prompt. Roberto's is a great local Mexican restaurant in downtown Sunnyvale. The location is great as there are often events just outside on Murphy street which makes Roberto's a great food stop during the event. The food is quite tasty and authentically Mexican. My personal favorite is the Rajitas Poblanas with Chicken. It has a good heat to it but is not overwhelming - just spicy enough to make my nose a bit runny. I also really enjoy the Pollo Al Xocoqui, it's not as spicy as the Rajitas Poblanas but the sauce is very flavorful and chicken is very well prepared. My fiancee is also a fan of the Nachos and recently ordered the Toastada which she enjoyed but thought was a bit too small so worth ordering a 2nd item on the combination with that one. The service is hit or miss. Sometimes the food is out incredibly fast but as they all handle all the tables as a group, sometimes it can be a long while to get a drink refill or pay your bill once your done. Overall though, the staff are always friendly and the food quality is good. Definitely can recommend stopping by this location if you're in the area and enjoy authentic Mexican food. read more

My best friend introduced me to this place, and introduced me to Roberto! This place is awesome! A nice little whole in the wall in downtown Sunnyvale, Roberto's Cantina sits close to Fibbar Magees. We strolled in here with one mission. To consume the fable pitchers of margaritas. We got two pictchers of margaritas and they tasted GOOD!!!!! We were also given salsa and chips, which I must say, taste homemade! The chips aren't overwhelmingly greasy, which is really nice. The salsa they gave us also aste really good. It wasn't too crowded here, and Roberto was very helpful in picking an exqisite margarita for us to consume. The price in my opinion is right for the quality and service that you get!
