We had just arrived in the area after an 8+ hour drive. Our goal was local cuisine and a "joint" ambiance. Look no further than this local worthy of any number television shows. Think Diners, Dives and Drive Inns or Anthony Bourdian, No Reservations. Adrian was our server and was the star of the night curating the perfect Cajun expierence for me while ensuring my not so Cajun curious wife was handled with care. Seafood Gumbo was excellent followed by the Catfish Billy, which is 2 dishes in one. Crawfish ettoufie with a fried catfish filet served atop with a portion "crawfish gravy" ! The flavors and textures were perfection and the crunch of the catfish added character along with a crunch that wouldn't allow you to stop eating. The Carrott Cake was ordered to go and was the perfect breakfast with a black coffee pour over the next morning. To be fair when we pulled into the parking lot we thought oh maybe we had hit the very edge of our find a "joint" ambition. Once inside the vibe of dive and/or joint hits hard but if you pay attention you will pick up on the volume of tables, which is evidence of the volume of patrons that frequent this local hideaway. We were there on a Wed night after the typical 5-630 dinner time so it was quiet. Adrian was welcoming and attentive, ensuring our needs were not simply met but exceeded. The best Resturant review isn't one that simply mashed the 5 stars, rather it's one that declares if I were local I would be a regular, in this case at Robert's River Road Resturant. We went there for dinner. This restaurant is far from the city but it's worth the drive. Friendly service and lots of parking outside. The restaurant has an old feeling but very nice decorated. Their complimentary bread with butter is a nice start while waiting for your meal. We ordered bbq shrimp and grits, salad, river road shrimp, papilotte, catch of the day fish with shrimp and rice. For Friday date night we decided on Roberto's River Road and it was perfect. We needed a Lenten meal and Roberto's fish options are always fresh so it was an easy choice. After seeing the specials, my husband claimed that he has never like striped bass however our server, Sam B., assured us that we would not be disappointed and we put our trust in him. So glad we did! The visual appearance of the main course was perfect as I have a tendency to eat with my eyes. The fish was light and flakey and seasoned perfectly. The shrimp was delicious and the sauce was incredible. The pasta was perfectly cooked and had that little kick in the marinara. The haricots verts were fabulous as always! I usually get fried green tomatoes topped with crab maison however, accidentally ordered the eggplant crab cakes. It ended up being very serendipitous as we loved them possibly even more! Finally, the bread pudding was excellent and everything rich foods in south Louisiana are about. Literally bite after bite of no regrets! Sam, our server was more like a tour director taking us on a visual, savory and sweet tour of perfection in dining in a small, quaint south Louisiana setting. My only critique is that even though the handcrafted "Fall Spiced Old Fashioned" is amazing, the glass is too small for a $15 cocktail. Oh well! This place is a great thing. We went last Saturday with another couple. We arrived a few minutes early and the parking lot was full of customers waiting for the doors to open. Our waitress Savanna was a delight, she was patient and caring. We started with the Road River and we were warned that it was spicy. It was just a kick and absolutely delicious. My husband had the "special" with beef, mushroom risotto and green beans. It was spectacular. We arrived around 6:30 on a Friday night. We were seated immediately. Our waitress was there quickly to offer us drinks and appetizers. The appetizer,, the fried green tomatoes with a wonderful topping were phenomenal!!!! I would come back to this restaurant just for the fried green tomatoes. My only complaints/suggestion would be that the fried green tomatoes were hot and dressing was cold. Maybe the dressing should be brought to room temperature? Bread was not offered until our entrées were served. The bread was lukewarm. In my opinion, bread should be offered when drinks are offered. My husband ordered a salad, and I ordered a hot entrée. Apparently, they were waiting for the hot entrée before they brought the salad. Because of that, my husband's crawfish were cold on his salad. I had stuffed shrimp. Not quite sure what they were stuffed with, but I would not order that again. Our waitress was not as attentive as she could/should have been, especially in light of the fact that the restaurant was not near full. It will be a minute before we go back to Roberto's. read more

First time at your place last night and we were impressed! The Butternut squash and crab soup was incredible! I had the Pappilote and it was delicious! My husband got the filet (cooked perfectly) with blue cheese crumbles and the foyot sauce was divine! The mashed potatoes and green bean sides were full of flavor as well. We ended with the salted caramel crème brûlée .. perfection! We will be back! I regret we didn't take pictures but we were too busy enjoying! read more

A Study in How Not to Practice Hospitality Dining at Roberto's River Road turned out to be less a meal than a cautionary tale--an object lesson in how indifference, rigidity, and managerial arrogance can undo a restaurant before the first plate ever hits the table. We arrived as a party of eight, including four children (ages 13, 5, 2, and 6 months), prepared for a wait. What we were not prepared for was a ninety-minute limbo, during which staff could not--or would not--provide even the most basic estimate of when we might be seated. In any serious restaurant, managing expectations is Hospitality 101. Here, it appeared to be an afterthought, if not an alien concept. When we were finally seated, there was no apology, no acknowledgment of the excessive delay, no gesture--no bread, no drink, no "thank you for your patience." Nothing. Silence where grace should have been. What followed bordered on parody. We were informed that a 13-year-old could not order from the kids' menu due to "strict guidelines." No alternatives were suggested. No flexibility was offered. It was presented as a non-negotiable rule. Given the hour-and-a-half wait with small children, this felt less like policy and more like pettiness masquerading as principle. After leaving, we reviewed Roberto's River Road's publicly available menu online. The kids menu is plainly listed, yet there is no stated age restriction or disclaimer indicating that a child of a certain age is prohibited from ordering from it. Any such limitation appears to be an internal policy, not one transparently communicated to guests in advance. Had this been disclosed--online or during the prolonged wait--an unnecessary and unpleasant confrontation might have been avoided altogether. The situation deteriorated further when a manager appeared--not to de-escalate, but to escalate with astonishing confidence. He reiterated the policy in a patronizing, sarcastic tone, standing uncomfortably close to my wife despite her politely asking multiple times for space. The effect was not authoritative; it was invasive. One can only hope this proximity was the result of poor hearing rather than poor judgment. In 44 years, I have never experienced this combination of condescension and hostility in a restaurant. I have worked in the industry as a bartender and server and now work blue collar. I understand rules, pressure, and busy nights. What I do not understand is a restaurant that treats guests as adversaries and policies as weapons. We left without eating, which may have been the most merciful outcome. Food can be forgotten; how a place makes you feel cannot. Roberto's River Road did not make us feel welcomed, respected, or even tolerated. A restaurant may enforce rules, but hospitality is not optional. Roberto's is a little piece of paradise! We started out with the eggplant crab cakes - which were to die for! The flavor was robust and melted in your mouth leaving your tastebuds mouthwatering with every bite. We were served promptly for a Wednesday evening. They surprisingly had several decent sized parties for a weekday but the service was phenomenal. We each had an entrée served with a salad and bread. The half a roasted duck is amazing. The amount was large enough to feed two people. The fried catfish and shrimp were perfectly crispy with amazing flavor - very well seasoned. Roberto's is great about substituting items! The restaurant hide a quiet vibe, next time I think we will sit in the bar area since this is more our scene but overall highly recommend this restaurant. We will be back! read more

Excellent Resturant. We have been there many times. Last night was another great meal The wife had a seafood platter she love it. I had one their nightly specials sweet potato incrusted Flounder , Fresh sweet flounder in some kind of outstanding cream sauce. I usually get the Roberto tenderloin which always fantastic. Service is great, their drinks are hand crafted All this takes place in an old general store located on River Road. That creates wonderful but yet casual atmosphere. read more

We had fried green tomatoes for table and I had crab chowder special as appetizers. The crab chowder was delicious. It's been 2 weeks since I've eaten here, and I wish I lived in LA because I would be a full-time patron of this restaurant!! After taking a wonderful tour of a plantation, we were going to have dinner at a restaurant on the plantation, but they were serving a valentines meal that cost over $100 per person, so we decided to leave. Our LA family decided to head over to Roberto's. We thought Roberto's was a Mexican restaurant (in Vegas it is). We drove for about 40 minutes along backroads with no homes in site for miles. When we pull into the parking area, we see an unassuming building that looks like an old and withered home. It was around 5pm, the parking lot started to fill up quickly. Our family ran into a few friends that they haven't seen, so I automatically thought that this is going to be a good experience...Off the beaten path + locals = I'm going to love the food...and that's what happened. I can't stop dreaming of the Catfish Billy dish! My mouth waters every time I remember my first bite. I got the catfish fried instead of blackened, everything's better fried . The dish arrived, and it wasn't fancy looking, but it looked home cooked...yummm...I couldn't wait to try it. My very first bite included catfish, crawfish etouffee and white rice. Holy cow! My tastebuds couldn't get enough of what we were experiencing. I lost all of my manners and shoveled the dish into my mouth. I forgot to mention, I dislike catfish. However, when you're in a state that specializes in seafood, I must try it. I was told that the catfish that I'm used to is the crappy belly part that is sold commonly. I had a filet that wasn't the belly...HUGE DIFFERENCE! EXTREMELY HUGE DIFFERENCE. I will never have catfish again unless it is from Roberto's. You don't have to worry about the service because it was just as amazing as the food. And that says a lot about the quality and pride this place has in all that they do! Our family has been dining here for more years than I can count. The food has always been outstanding. One of our favorite places. Sadly this is no longer the case. The last 4-5 times we dined at Roberto's the food has just been okay. Not bad but nothing great. Friday we had dinner and it was terrible. My husband and I both had the fish special. Amberjack is my favorite fish. It was extremely overcooked, tasted fishy and old. Extremely disappointing. The risotto was bland and totally lacked flavor. We normally order a dessert to share or take home. The dessert are also not what they have been in the past. No longer topped with fresh whipped cream. They come with a dollop of nasty pre-made cool whip type topping. Not what you expect for an $8 dessert. Service has still be great. Food sadly is very disappointing. read more

12/20/24 I went eat with a group of friends and family. My wife and I ordered the seafood platter. The food took a while to come out which I'm fine with however it was brought to our table at room temperature. The Seafood gumbo is a little better than average. The seafood all had the same batter. Fish and shrimp had to much corn meal, oysters were under cooked and cold. The soft shell crab was very small. The bread and crab dip were good. For Baton Rouge area this might be good food but for a Cajun from Bayou Lafourche and currently living in St Gabriel this is just average food. read more

The chicken was cooked perfectly and had a nice tenderness to it and the Alfredo sauce was rich and creamy. I've heard great things about this place so we finally made a trip to check it out for a friends birthday. Definitely off the beaten path but closer to us than I realized. Pretty packed on a Tuesday night and with only two waitresses for what seemed like the whole restaurant service was pretty slow. Waitress was working hard, just short handed. The menu was impressive and each item sounded better than the last. We tried the fried green tomatoes and they were excellent. I ordered the duck and it was incredible. Others at the table ordered the papillote and fried seafood platters and everyone raves about their entrees . We left no room for dessert but the options sounded great. My husband was torn between a steak and the seafood platter and the waitress mentioned a steak special on weekends so we will be returning for that. Hoping the slow service was a one off and our next experience will be better. For the price I would hope for a little more. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover is the saying. The exterior and interior of this restaurant may look ran down but the food here is great. Their mashed potatoes and green beans are great sides with good flavor. Their stuffed fish is our favorite choice but we have tried most of their items on their menu. Our service on this visit was very good. Food came out relatively quick but with enough time to eat the bread service and side salad that comes with the entree's. Looking for an adventure for dinner this is the place. Yeah it's a bit out of the way and totally tucked away off the main roads but you have to go check it out. This place is not like your average seafood restaurant. It's more of a hidden gem then anything and the atmosphere is like your walking into your moms house. The service is always friendly and nice. It's kid friendly as they give the kiddos a bucket of crayons to color the paper tablecloth's. I have been here a handful of times and every time I get the catch of the day - listed on the menu as Fish en Papillote which is a fish baked in parchment paper and seasoned with herbs and lemon and baked to perfection. I used to go the seafood platter but that was way too much food for me. The seafood platter is delicious and I recommend that you can share with with another person. It is all fried to a golden crisp and it packs lots of flavor. I will say that the seafood platter is one of the dishes that doesn't come with a salad but you can add it to your order. If anything you are not into any of these dishes get a salad and order their sensational salad dressing it will not disappoint. Also ask for bread because it's so fresh and delicious that it just melts in your mouth. I usually ask for another piece so I don't have to share that's how good it is. So if you are looking for a drive and good food come try this place out and order a sweet southern iced tea and enjoy! read more

Interesting little place right outside of St.Gabriel. If I recall this was one of 225's little hidden gems and it's just that. The building seems a little older but once you go inside it is beautifully decorated. There's a bar area that has a full bar of things not listed on their drink menu and a dining area. We were promptly greeted and seated. Me and my husband shared a seafood platter as it was enough for two and we wanted to try a little bit of everything. The bread that came with the meal was a little tough but hey it wasn't the main entree so that's ok. The fried fish was my favorite. Hot crispy and the batter was great. I typically don't like cornmeal batter but this one was good. We got the bread pudding with rum sauce to top of the night and it was well worth it. Hot and tasty. We arrived at 515pm with dozens of cars already there. Ambiance is cottage casual. Service was friendly, prompt and helpful for menu choices. We had crabcakes and FG tomatoes, both delish and perfect split for 4. We had 4 different entrees including daily special - all generous portions and cooked perfectly, served with salad, veggie and starch. Desserts were also generous and tasty, enough to split. I would definitely return for a great casual meal or to bring visitors for a true Louisiana experience of food and hospitality. Well done! read more
