Don't make the trip to this place for anything but their selection of beers, which are so abundant that maybe just that makes it worth the journey. The food is mediocre at best. I was served a "large" gumbo, and I don't even want to know how small the lesser size serving might be. The Dungeness crab leg thrown into the gumbo was a nice touch -- something to crack it open so you can eat it would have been a really nice touch, too. They didn't have a nut cracker or anything, so I guess that crab leg was decorative? I ordered a house salad, and by dictionary definition I guess it was a salad. It had three ingredients: wilted iceberg lettuce, croutons, and a couple of fridge-aged cherry tomatoes of the flavorless variety. Bet the profit margin on that salad is HUGE! I don't go out to dinner because I want to heap more profit on someone's margins -- I want good food. I can't say enough about the great staff at this restaurant, and I truly mean that.. They're friendly, hard working and they really make you feel special as a customer. The service is nothing less than excellent, and I know what to look for in this regard -- you may have seen my long history of reviews on Yelp. I bet even the staff is bothered by the odor of urine wafting through the restaurant from the men's room. I certainly was. Bottom line: this place could be world-class if it had new management. Chimes is a staple in Baton Rouge. I recently visited home and after helping my sister move into her dorm, I had to stop by. This place was around when I was in college a long time ago lol. And the food is still phenomenal and fresh. The margaritas are potent and tasty! It took about 45 minutes for us to get a table. A ton of people were there. We had a few drinks at the bar with pretty quick service. Once we were at our table, we ordered the fried alligator appetizer. I had the barbecue shrimp Poboy. I was only able to eat half of a half. It was so much food so I definitely had to take it home. This place is pretty affordable for seafood and Louisiana cooking. It did take some time for our food to come out, but it was very lively in the building. I put some pictures up of the decor in there. Pretty traditional for a Louisiana style restaurant. Had to come to one of BR's staple restaurant since being in town. Walked in and got greeted and seated swiftly. Server said he was pretty new on the job, but did a great job in terms of communication and service. Chimes is forever a staple in Baton Rouge. I love this location, right off of LSU's campus, making it easy to walk to or there's a parking lot in the back. The place is large and they opened up the rooftop in the last few years so there is usually seating available. The food typically comes out fairly quickly, but it can get very busy so a little patience is needed at times. As for the food, this is a classic Cajun spot. Come get alligator bites, boudin balls, catfish, poboys, red beans and rice, jambalaya, etc. You name it, and they probably have it. The food is always good and the portions are large. read more

I checked the reviews before I arrived but was a bit disappointed as it did not live up to the ratings. The Food was good, not great. My friend recommended this restaurant while I was in Baton Rouge we took a Lyft from the Hilton downtown for about $12. It was a great decision to get out of downtown and see the LSU district. Scotty was our server and he was absolutely wonderful! "I've got you" was his famous saying and he certainly did! He had the best smile and giggle! Had a great experience at The Chimes Restaurant. The food here is seriously outstanding. I've tried a wide range of things on the menu, and honestly, everything has been consistently amazing. You really can't go wrong no matter what you order. One of the highlights has to be the platters - huge portions and packed with variety (see photo). Definitely come hungry. The atmosphere is also a big part of what makes this place special. It has that classic student energy being so close to LSU - lively, fun, and always buzzing. I understand it was a busy time due to multiple events in the area, but the bigger issue was the lack of customer service. My order sat on the counter for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged it, which already showed a lack of urgency. When I finally got home, I realized my order was incomplete. I ordered the chicken and biscuits brunch, but only received the biscuits with a poached egg that doesn't even go with this item on the menu. Definitely not worth the $15 I paid for. We came here as a group of nine people. I don't know that this restaurant sees large groups very often. Our waitress was friendly, but she's very easily became flustered with so many people requesting so many different things of her. The many mentions that because they get so many tours that they are willing to provide samples of several items to customers on request. It was juicy and tender, not at all hard chewy or overdone. A lot of food was ordered at our table, but I can only speak to that one dish, personally. My little one and I shared my entrée. It was definitely more than enough for the both of us. And like I said, it was darn good. The restaurant seems like it would be the perfect place to hang out at the bar and catch a baseball game or the local Louisiana State University team playing. I could see this definitely being a fun hangout spot. There is an upstairs area, but we didn't go and check that space out. Aside from our kind of irritable, seeming waitress, everything was really nice. All the other hostess staff were very friendly and sweet. All the other waiters that were helping our waitress were very friendly and were nice enough to make small talk with us. It was a fun time. The food was great. I went there on a LSU-Alabama gameday and the vibes were immaculate. BUT, they were only immaculate because we got there early and had a place to sit. On a gameday, every single people in the western hemisphere is trying to party on the rooftop so make sure to get there in plenty of time. For the amount of people there, service was great.
