The negative reviews of this place are REAL. Sometimes you question the negative reviews or think maybe it won't be that bad. It was! The lady taking orders was about as friendly a brick wall. Not RUDE, just not friendly at all! Ordered a California burrito. Before ordering, asked if Pico came in the burrito, the lady taking orders said "no". Wellll, it did. But I also didn't actually receive a Cali burrito. Even though, someone wrote "Cali" on my wrapper. It was a carne Asada burrito, WITH pico. I had also ordered my CALI burrito with extra cheese, which I had to repeat 3 times because every time she repeated the order, she didn't mention extra cheese. Well, I had one small spot of cheese all clumped in one little area. Long story short, don't do it. The other 3 Mexican food restaurants in Lakeside are so much better!! read more

I ordered a carne asada rice and beans bowl for my lunch break and a few hours after eating it, my stomach was cramping and my head started to work. After work i went home to sleep it off but when i woke up it was so much worse, I was throwing up everything, my stomach had the most painful issues ive ever experience. Bomb food! One of my favorite places, but when we ordered the lady never responded to us after sitting there for about a long 3-5 minutes. So we pull forward thinking she might have been helping someone, so that's why she didn't answer. But when we pulled up, we find her standing at the register by the window on her phone texting, LITERALLY right in front of us texting not taking our money after we said " hello " multiple times. Then while we are waiting for her to take/process the order on our card she stops & grabs her phone to show a coworker something on it & they stand there messing around. Enchilada plate was absolutely terrible. It was super salty, the cheese inside was not melted, the rice was cold, the beans were the only thing on this plate that were semi-decent. On recommendations from a local sought out Roberto's in the middle of the night. I walked up and think I got put behind the drive-thru queue. I had the carne asada burrito plate. All in all a good deal based on quantity. The burrito was full of meat and a bit of garnish. Maybe I have been conditioned by years of Americanized Mexican food, but I didn't find it all that tasty even after pouring in the hot sauce. read more

We ordered a california burrito and a bean and cheese. The california burrito didn't have guac in it which is completely unacceptable. Guac is standard in all cali burritos. We have had problems with him not getting the orders right or what not before and they always make it right, this he straight yelled at me and told me I didn't order correctly. This taco shop gave me, my boyfriend & my sister food poisoning. My boyfriend had to go to the hospital a couple days into it. It's the only place that all three of us ate at that day, the only common factor. We were there for dinner and we all ate something different , completely different ingredients (California burritos & fish tacos) which means somebody had dirty hands. Super gross! We were all woken up in the middle of the night/early morning with severe pain & diarrhea that lasted the rest of the week. When I moved to lakeside 2 years ago this was my favorite spot. A few months ago I visited and was charged twice for an order I had placed.  When I returned the next day I was told because the charges were different amounts nothing could be done to credit my account. I like their food most of the time it's pretty bomb. Always a long line. However I just went and ordered a steak and eggs burrito, and a ham breakfast burrito & a large horchata. But when I got home it was bacon not steak. No biggie I know mistakes happen, i called to get a refund on that specific burrito(or maybe next tine I can get a free one) and they said I would have to drive back right now and bring them back the burrito. If you ever find yourself in Lakeside, you will notice that there is at least one taco shop in every streetcorner. Most are independently owned. Roberto's does not have indoor dining. You either go thru the drive-thru, or the walk-up window. They have outdoor dining overlooking scenic Woodside Avenue. I am taking one star away from them for that. But the food here is great. They have huge California burritos, their rolled tacos always taste fresh & IMO, one of the best Chorizo burritos for your money. Not too salty, not too much potatoes, but perfectly spiced for my taste. If I order anything, it is always with their Chorizo burrito. Roberto's is enigmatic. This place beeps on my brain's radar for no logical reason. The portions are trimmer than other taco shops, the prices are more inflated than a kid's bouncy house (eight bucks for carne asada fries??), and the flavors range from "meh" to "mehhh". Mea culpa, man. Mea culpa. Still, I go back again. The California burrito is so dry you would think that they toweled it off. Why isn't the carne asada juicer? Why are these fries like starch hell? Why is the cheese clumpy and sad? The chorizo burrito is pretty good, to be honest, so there is silver lining to be had. Roberto's is very popular in Lakeside and surrounding areas so I thought I would give it a try. Presentation: The restaurant building itself isn't anything special, it's about what you would expect from a fast food joint. It's situated on a semi-busy street corner with a few other businesses. Customer Service: I found this to be the most lacking part about this place. It's not that service is bad but it just isn't big enough or fast enough for the amount of customers it gets. You can find yourself waiting half an hour in the drive through sometimes and it can get frustrating if you are hungry. I found that if you park in the lot and go up to the window you can get your food twice as fast. The employees aren't particularly friendly, but it is what you would expect from a place like this. They are trying to churn out food so fast there isn't time for pleasantries. Food quality: I have heard conflicting stories about Roberto's, some say it's great while others have said they were disappointed. I've found that when eating at these places you should get one of the popular items, just ask the cashier what the favorite is. Personally, I got the #4 (2 beef tacos, rice and beans) and it was very satisfying. It was a little bit on the greasy side, but the tacos were very good; not authentic Mexican food good, but good. The beans and rice also seemed to be above average compared to other Mexican fast food restaurants. The best thing about the food is that tasted like it was prepared fresh, it was very warm and nothing about it made me feel like it was microwaved or old. The salsa is very mild, but has a good taste. Conclusion: Roberto's is very good at what it tries to be, a Mexican fast food restaurant. Don't come here expecting high end Mexican food or outstanding customer service. But if you are up for decent food at a good price, this is a fairly great place. read more

This place is extremely over priced. The food is very bland. The portions are VERY meager! They make you think your getting a larger burrito by loosely rolling it and loading it down with French fries The meat is extremely bland and chewy. As a native San Diegan I have had many burritos, and this had to be the worst yet. Will not be returning, I should of checked the reviews before going. To be quite honest I have been here a handful of times and given them the benefit of the doubt a few times. This time was the last straw. I ordered a California burrito and asked for no sour cream or guacamole intentionally so they wouldn't load down my burrito with these items instead of meat. Instead I get my order to go and I dig in. My first impression was that the burrito literally had no mass to it. It felt hallow and weightless. I took a bite. After taking a bite I now saw why my burrito felt like it was full of air. I literally paid more than $6 after taxes for a rolled up tortilla with a couple of chunks of grisly meat and not even that much Fry's (what the)? My experience with most taco shops now a days is they give the least amount of food and charge overly premium prices for a bag of air. I don't have a problem paying for the prices but at least give me enough food to get full. Needless to say I ate the burrito and was still hungry. I have had trips where this place would get a 5 star, and other times a 1 star. My most recent trip was a 1 star but I will leave that till the end of the review and just give an all around review. When it comes to Taco Shops I really feel that a place can only be so good. Unless a place does something speacil (Example would be Lucha Libres) then a place in terms of food gets a 3 star. Robertos is your average taco shop with no frills, but it gets the job done. I prefer to get the California Burrito, and its never disappointing. Perfect sizing and the ingredients are tasty like you would expect. On my most recent trip to Roberto's I got the worst service yet. It was 7:06AM on a Sunday. I was driving through because I wanted to buy a couple of large tortillas to take home so I could make my own breakfast burritos for the start of football. I have done this on many occasions. I waited for a minute or so at the intercom and was never greeted. I started the traditional "Hello?" but go no response. I look ahead and there is an employee standing there on the curb.
