I have had trips where this place would get a 5 star, and other times a 1 star. My most recent trip was a 1 star but I will leave that till the end of the review and just give an all around review. When it comes to Taco Shops I really feel that a place can only be so good. Unless a place does something speacil (Example would be Lucha Libres) then a place in terms of food gets a 3 star. Robertos is your average taco shop with no frills, but it gets the job done. I prefer to get the California Burrito, and its never disappointing. Perfect sizing and the ingredients are tasty like you would expect. On my most recent trip to Roberto's I got the worst service yet. It was 7:06AM on a Sunday. I was driving through because I wanted to buy a couple of large tortillas to take home so I could make my own breakfast burritos for the start of football. I have done this on many occasions. I waited for a minute or so at the intercom and was never greeted. I started the traditional "Hello?" but go no response. I look ahead and there is an employee standing there on the curb. Now for a small place with out side seating you would not think it was that grate. Two words "DOG FOOD" that is what my last Carne Asada burrito tasted like. I don't know what it is with this place but sometimes it's so good and other times they can't make it right. I just had the worst experience at this place. I've gone here countless times, but I'm afraid this time was my last. We ordered a shredded beef tostada and Carne asada fries. The tostada was completely missing the shredded beef, which we were charged for, it was slopped together with zero care, and for some reason had a ton of liquid in the box. I'm guessing from the lettuce? It was so soggy, I could fold it in half like a soft taco. Gross. I took two bites and lost my appetite. We got 2 sandwiches of chicken and steak and carne asada fries. We were not impressed with the sandwiches the bread was soggy and we totally live around the corner. We only ate the inside of the sandwich and the flavor wasn't good either. Never again we will get sandwiches from there. So disappointed!! The carne asada fries have no flavor as well. I've been by a few times and seen the drive-thru line backed out to the street. That, paired with the delicious aroma of whatever they were cooking, led me to try Roberto's. My first visit was great! The cashier was very friendly and made me feel welcome, despite the ridiculous drive-thru line.I ordered the 12 rolled tacos and split them with a friend. I'd give those 5-stars, but that wasn't my only experience. In the same visit, my girlfriend ordered the classic chicken burrito. It tasted good. However, she found not one, but two bones in her burrito. it was also a super-juicy mess by the time she was halfway done. I went in earlier today, and we ordered a couple of their breakfast burritos. One potato, egg, & cheese; one sausage, egg, & cheese. It came out to $9.18 for the two. I thought that didn't match up with their menu price, but I let it slide. The cashier was rude to me, so I didn't want to talk to him any more than I had to. It turns out they did two potato, egg, & cheese and just added sausage to one. That's why it rang up too high. They were both terrible. The burritos were very wet inside. The eggs had a rubbery texture, and the potatoes were almost raw. Why did the food take so long when it wasn't even fully cooked? I don't know. That was a negative experience. The quality of food is better than you will find at most other taco shops they offer chicken burritos with flaky white breast meat and fresh tortillas that are outstanding! If I could give this place zero starts I would!! My sister ordered a burrito with sour cream on the side, a large drink and when she got to the window her order was wrong. The lady was extremely rude, she asked for her money back and this crazy lady threw the burrito in the car at her. Yes...I said she threw the burrito at my sister in the car.. hit my sister in the chest, hit the stereo and speakers and finally landed on the floor of the car. WTF????!!!! I've had bad service before but I have never heard of something so crazy! There is a number to call on the window which just rings and goes to voice mail. This Roberto's is like that horse in The Wizard of Oz that keeps changing color. One time they knock my socks off and the next time the food is dry and overcooked and the next time it is smaller and the next time it is incredible. What's up? The first carne asada burrito I had here was unbeatable. Really. Made perfect, everything fresh. too big to finish, just awesome. The next time, I got a breakfast burrito that was the same way, just awesome and too much to finish. Sometimes I walk up, sometimes I drive thru - it depends on how many cars are in line but there is no place to eat inside, only tables outside so that is a good thing to remember. Sometimes the wait is 15 minutes, sometimes only a few (4-7 mins which is pretty good for Mexican fast food). This last time I went, the carne asada was really way overdone and the whole order wasn't very good at all. I just don't get. So here's the deal. Go there when the food is good and you will be VERY happy that you did and never go there when the food isn't so good and you will be very happy that you went to Sarai's instead, which is my personal favorite spot for Mexican food in Lakeside. read more

I went to Roberto's on Thanksgiving morning to pick up some Breakfast burritos for my wife and I. I ordered two burritos. One with ham and one with no meat. When I got my order I only received one burrito. So I told the guy that I had ordered two and repeated my order. The guy then rudely said "well that will be another four dollars" then shut the drive through window. I could not hear what he was saying but I could tell that he was talking smack about me to the cook. After all of that when I got home we found out that they had put ham in both of the burritos. Today I gave it another try and went for rolled tacos, waited in the drive thru line for 15 minutes, get to the window and she tells me $7.29...for 5 rolled tacos?!?! She said "with everything on it it's extra." Ummm, ok...I just ordered what was on the menu and the price was $4.25, which I told her. What's "everything" that made the price jump $3.04?? She said she added sour cream and lettuce. So sour cream and lettuce on 5 rolled tacos (that I didn't even order) is over $3 extra!! She was polite and offered to give them to me for $4.59, but I did not want sour cream, etc on my rolled tacos, nor did I want to wait another 10 minutes. This a 4 star review based on low flair taco shop food. (This isn't high end fare). There are a lot of options to choose from in Lakeside for Mexican food but Roberto's is my favorite. They're convenient: drive thru and open 24 hours a day. They're tasty: best carne asada anything but especially nachos. The red hot sauce is delish on everything. I pulled up to the window the bill came out to $12.83. For one burrito and a side of beans ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!! I drove off not paying and drove to santanas in Santee got my food for $8.54. The food here is decent. Just decent. But it is a drive through and way better than the other choices around here. The biggest problem is the rude lady that is the order taker and cashier. She is rude, defensive and bitchy. She makes the experience unpleasant. She does not smile and gives off a very negative vibe. i used to live down the street. certainly an upgrade to the near by sombreros. the hot sauce here is actually good unlike the stuff they peddle at sombreros. funny story. as mentioned i used to live near by. one night coming home from a party with my future wife i decided i needed a machaca burrito. i was pretty toasty but my wife was smashed. she decided to play drinking games with wine. bad idea. driving down the freeway to home she tries to puke out the window. on the freeway?? another bad idea. so with my car half filled with vomit i pulled into the drive thru and ordered my burrito and ate it when we got home. the food is that good. one time on another trip my friend wes decided to climb into the window and hang out with mr robertos. that trip i got violently ill which may have been food poisoning. still went back after a month or so. love joel read more
