I finally found a really good Mexican place in Bangor. It is owned by the same fella who owns Las Palapas, so I didn't have much hope for it. It is located by the airport, outside of a Quality Inn. Normally that would mean "Meh" for service and quality, but it didn't on the Sunday afternoon I went. I walked in and was thrilled to hear Selena playing overhead, a great start. The waitress was attentive and cute. I got birria and it was so moist and flavorful! It tasted like the Mexican food I had in Taxco, so it was just fantastic. My companion had the chicken with spinach enchiladas and they rocked it. So good! For 35 dollars for two people, it was a bargain. Oh nom nom nom! read more

Our experience was excellent! The En Mole was terrific, not sweet, and a little kick. The rice was fresh and flavorful. My friend's enchiladas were very good. The chips and salsa were plentiful and good. Servers were friendly and I love the long bar and the high seat booths. They did a nice job converting the old "Ground Round". OMG! Bangor Maine has several excellent Mexican eateries. Roco Azul is clearly at the top of this list. The server brought us a basket of fresh warm tortilla chips & salsa. Both were excellent made in house. The chips were huge and fresh. I'd even call them delicate. We came to lunch after find out that our wait at the BMV (motor vehicle) would exceed an hour. Lunch arrived with 10 minutes of our ordering. My wife got a Mexican Salad loaded with fresh grilled shrimp. There must have been ten shrimp - all decent size. I ordered Cabrillos- a shredded beef & cheese inside a grilled corn tortilla. Magnificent accurately describes this dish. I stopped here after getting off a plane because it looked like the only place in town. I'm not sure if I was right about it being the only place in town, but it was convenient from the airport on the way to our destination Acadia national Park. It was a Friday night and we may have been the only people there. I don't think Mexican food is big in Maine. Despite it not being busy, the service was still lacking as well with minimal checks and refills. I know every Mexican restaurant is different but this one definitely feels short of the ones we have back home in Kentucky - both in taste and value. My son ordered the enchiladas and the version that he ordered was supposed to have shrimp steak and chicken. They brought him out a dish that only had chicken. I ordered something that I've never seen on a Mexican menu before which was the poblano enchiladas. The enchiladas were extremely bland. They lacked a lot of seasoning. Did not disappoint. Started off with warm nacho chips and salsa. I got the Govenor Tacos (grilled shrimp, pablano peppers and onions, with settled cheese). Good Mexican food can be hard to come by in Maine. I say this as someone who lived in California for more than 25 years. Roca Azul is authentic, tasty, and their lunch specials are exceptional, and priced well. They start you off with an overflowing bowl of tortilla chips and a small carafe of salsa, with small bowls so everyone can double-dip without eyes rolling. The verde burrito was overstuffed with marinated pork. The plate also had cheese-covered refried beans and rice. The rice was the only disappointment with canned corn, carrots, and peas. (Note to owners: leave these in the can). The restaurant is spacious and their lunch specials are a true bargain. Margaritas appeared enormous (Note to self: try these next time). Great to see cheerful service and fine food near the airport, but even if you're not flying out, it's worth the trip. read more

Restaurant was not even to its max capacity for the service to be so slow. The server didn't even apologize for the inconvenience when paying for out drinks. He was very dismissive. We were surprised to find authentic Mexican food in Bangor. We've been to lesser trod areas of Mexico. Their dishes are from different regions, great flavors. Fresh ingredients. We got there early, the place was full by the time we left. We sat at the bar, warm chips and homemade salsa came w the menu. My favorite Shrimp Diabla was flavorful and hot! As it should be! The Chicken Al Pastor tacos were delicious. We had birria as our appetizer, so rich. Its traditional to have a layer of oil on top of the beefy consomne, not my preference. We have been eating at Mexican restaurants for the last 60 years and this is by far the best one that we have ever been to. Everything we had was excellent. I had enchiladas and my husband had a burrito as our entrees. We also had their queso dip with ground beef. OMG! It was ALL amazing! We highly, highly recommend. One thing of note: we were staying at the Marriott Bonvoy's Fairfield Inn right next door. They gave us a list of restaurants nearby and Roca Azul was not on the list. It's right next door! When we got to the restaurant we told our waiter this information. He was surprised but asked if we had our room key from the hotel. We showed it to him and he gave us a 10% discount. And his restaurant is not even on the hotel's list! Of course we informed the front desk that they need to add this restaurant to their list that they hand out to their guests. When we come to visit family we stay at the Home 2Suites so it's very conveniently located next to the hotel. Their prices are very reasonable. The food tasted very satisfying. Been 3 times over 4 months. At first it was great, and great service. The second time food was ok, but service wasn't great and we waited way to long for the bill. The 3rd and last time I will ever go was terrible! Horrible service, I wanted to leave but hubby really wanted queso. Queso came with dirty dishes! The wooden base was filthy and had dried cheese on it. The never brought us small plates to eat off! The salsa bowls were also dirty!The waiter never came back to take our order! Probably the best Mexican food in Bangor! I use to live in the south to include New Mexico so finding more authentic good Mexican food is not easy...in Maine let alone Bangor! This was surprisingly good and tasty. Hot, but not too hot, good fresh flavors and great Mexican flavors. The place is clean and nicely decorated, staff and service were friendly! Pricing about the norm for 2025, but worth it if you're looking for good food. My husband had Enchiladas Rancheros and I had quesabirria. Both were just delicious! Got the coupon on the newspaper and got excited about trying a different restaurant want a different flavors. Long Walk for handicap person to go from parked car to front door. But we were welcomed by a friendly face at the hostess stand and she sat us right away there were only 7 to 10 other customers TVs with football and soccer. We were seated in a corner booth the decor is new modern clean and refreshing. We were welcomed by John who waited on us for the evening. We Ordered enchiladas and a spinach onion quesadilla. Worst dining experience I have had in years. Close to our hotel. Had great reviews. Sat at bar and bartender was difficult to communicate with. Got Chips and Salsa immediately, which was good because we rarely saw him again. Ordered Cerviche for appetizer, which should have taken no time but took over 20 minutes. Because of that we ordered the entrees to go upon delivery of app. And then we waited and waited. There was no one tending the bar. We did observe 5 employees at the end of the bar near the kitchen chatting it up and having a good old time.
