This restaurant came highly recommended to me for Taco Tuesday dinner. I will try again as Lunch Wednesday really wasn't good. Arrived at 11:30 and the parking lot was empty. It did fill up by the time I left (around 12:30). Was seated promptly in a booth, menu with silverware was provided. Menu is huge, took me a while to find the page with lunch specials. (Might have been nice to point it out.) I ordered the chicken burrito lunch special. Chips and salsa came quickly as did a soda. When lunch came, it was just placed and the waiter came and asked "how it was." My response was I haven't tried it yet. The enchilada was mostly rice, with some chicken, and the cheese sauce on the top was COLD. Pretty much the worst enchilada I remember. I ate 1/2 and waited for the waiter to come so I could get a check. English was a struggle for my waiter. I asked for $1 back from my $20 to cover lunch and tip. Said it a couple times, and he eventually just brought me full change to let me leave a tip. Normally, I would have just rounded up and left the $20, but it was just so bad I couldn't. Mucho terrible! I have been very pleased in the past ordering the Cazuela at oth the Bangor and Brewer locations. BUT: Last night, we took our visiting friends to the Brewer location for dinner, and it was a major disappointment. The enchiladas tapatias were ordered both with beef tips and chicken. Neither was worth a second bite. They were both tasteless, dry, and lacked any flavor or seasoning. The mild red sauce topping was more of a tasteless brown gravy. The nachos and chimi changas got similarly bad reviews. There were six of us, and we all asked for water; four were served. It took three more requests for the additional two waters to finally be delivered. When I asked our waiter to send the manager to speak with us, he replied that no manager was there--a very bad indicator for this nearly or full restaurant on a busy night, and with that response he promptly walked away. When we went to speak to the bartender, he was rude and dismissive after no provocation, which made me wonder if we were perhaps nowhere near the first to be unhappy last night. Great authentic Mexican food with the nicest people to serve it. We went in on an afternoon and ordered the flautas and green chili. Everything was excellent. Huge portions. This was literally the most flavorless and unsatisfying meal I've had in forever! I ordered the flautas with beef and chicken. I couldn't tell you which was which aside from the look. I thought they were made with flour tortillas and deep fried-this was flavorless corn. There were onions/peppers in with the meat that had zero seasoning. There was perhaps an ounce of meet total. Rice, beans and lettuce made up the majority of the plate. The salsa is bland and tastes more like a tomato sauce than a salsa. Both myself and my dining companion left feeling like McDonald's would have been a better choice and we love Mexican food. My steak taco meal doesn't look like grilled steak strips like described in the menu, more like that shredded steak you'd get with a Philly cheese steak; and it doesn't come with lettuce, cheese, or sour cream?! The carnitas meal comes with very little meat, 3 taco shells (which were missing) but only enough meat for 1 1/2 maybe. This was my first time at this Las Palapas location. It is a happening place with good staff. The house margarita is my favorite. I'm still working my way through the menu of this small chain, though I have a few favorites already. The quality is fresh, and they taste better than most Mexican food restaurants I typically go to. Las Palapas Mexican Restaurants have 2 nearby locations in the Bangor area. The Bangor location just off 95 at the Hogan Rd exit is convenient. The Brewer location on Wilson isn't as convenient but the ambiance is worth the drive for in-house dining. We prefer the packing of our take out dinners ordered from the Bangor location. The salsa packed for takeout from the Brewer location is always on the bottom of the bag and ends up breaking open destroying the support of the bag. Our favorite menu item is the Enchiladas Supremos! It's a plate of 3 different enchiladas and fried rice topped with a light salad and sour cream!. It's so good we can't imagine trying anything else. The takeout comes with large restaurant style corn chips which are also served as an appetizer with medium salsa. Either takeout or dining is relatively quick service. Enjoy! read more

Saw the reviews and thought Las Palapas was a good option for takeout. The order was fulfilled quick and I was excited about a speedy delivery. However upon arrival I see why it was so quick . . The "Salad" hardly came with any greens! I understand the greens shrink with hot food or liquid but this isn't the case. I came here for the first time last night with my mother. I've been to other Mexican restaurants in the area many times over the years, and while I've always been satisfied with the food at other establishments, I wanted to give Las Palapas a try as well. Boy am I glad I did! The restaurant has a casual south-of-the-border vibe, and is also festively decorated. There is a bar with seating, and numerous comfortable booths in the dining area. We were greeted and served very quickly, so right away the service stood out from other local restaurants as being fast and friendly. The menu options are extensive and what you'd expect from a Mexican restaurant--tacos, burritos, fajitas etc, but also a few items unique to the restaurant. The prices of most dishes are average, but they have nightly specials, and we somehow got an extremely low special price on house margaritas last night! Not only was the service friendly, but everything came out quickly as well--the drinks, the corn chips and salsa, our meal, and our dessert, and our server made sure to check on us occasionally if we needed anything. And best of all, everything was delicious! We ordered the chimichangas for our main, which come as one beef and one chicken, and served with sides of refried beans and a Mexican rice. Everything was very tasty, and I loved the shredded chicken and beef inside the chimis, which was perfectly seasoned and tender. The lime margaritas were delicious as well, and even the "small" was sizable. Having been to other Mexican restaurants for years and receiving generally slow service and mixed results on the food, after our experience last night Las Palapas will now be our go-to and I'd highly recommend it! read more

Well that was a lovely taco Tuesday treat. I remember a discussion with a friend in Portland about "what should you pay for a taco?" Both of us decided tacos should be around 2$ and no more than 3$ if they are amazing! But around Portland it is rare to find a taco deal anywhere. There are a few spots, but they aren't abounding. Well, rolling in to Las Palapas I was SO surprised that taco Tuesday brings you $1.25 tacos, either bean, beef, or chicken. Also, the $5.00 margaritas are some of the strongest I've had in a long time. Not only are they strong, they are not so sweet you walk away with a sugar headache. Score! The place was packed and it was only their first month of being open. Our server was AMAZING, and I don't say that lightly. She was prompt, friendly, checked in repeatedly, got our order of 7 people correct the first time, and delivered our check in the exact amount of time to not overstay our welcome. Still managed to up my order only 15 minutes from the posted time but my taco salad was a soggy mess already.
