We decided to eat in a regular restaurant rather than fast food for our most recent trip to Bangor. We were in the mall area and saw Las Palapas near the hotel and decided to try it for a change of pace. Our server was helpful and friendly. We started with the standard chips and salsa. I liked it fine, but the salsa was too spicy for my wife. The server offered some enchilada brown sauce for her instead. It was a nice thought, but my wife disliked the taste and, I must agree, when I sampled it I felt it tasted unsuitable, at least for that purpose. It was Margarita Monday and I would have liked to indulge, but I was driving so I demurred. We both ordered taco salads for our meal. Taco salad is also a Monday special, priced a dollar less than the regular dinner version. Just out of curiosity, after my wife ordered the lunch special with guacamole, I ordered the regular dinner version. Our salads looked about the same, except hers had more ground beef for whatever reason. So my experiment was inconclusive. The taco salad was pretty good, and we brought some home with us for later, so it was a good value these days at around $10 each. Ordinarily I would finish by saying we'll be going back again, but the spicy salsa is probably a deal breaker for my wife, unless we bring our own mild salsa! read more

Pleasantly surprised. The fajitas taco salad with shrimp was exceptional! A very generous number of perfectly cooked shrimp with plenty of fresh veggies in a mild sauce, made for a delicious dish. My carne asada taco plate came with a large serving of tasty refried beans. I would not recommend the "house lime margarita" but I suspect if I'd ponied up for their upgraded margarita, I'd have been much happier. 4,000 miles from our home in San Diego, I was impressed by how good this was. read more

Great Mexican Restaurant. The food is very good. The drinks are great. Everyday they have specials. I like their steak fajitas which are sizzling hot and a large serving. I never can eat it all. They always serve tortillas chips and salsa when you first sit down. All the staff there are really great. Today we had Jose wait on us. We pulled up and the place was packed. My boyfriend is Mexican so we were in search for real Mexican food not Tex Mex. We were pleased to find it here. The food was ok, my Tacos at home are way better, the hamburger meat was dry. The enchilada was ok. And the sopias were ok. I also thought the Pepsi was flat. The chips and Salsa was the best part! Our server took our order, brought our food and brought our check, she wasn't very friendly let alone checked on us. We went about 8pm so they weren't even busy! The last time I ate here the food was good. I left full and happy. I don't know what else you want me to say.

This was the worst experience I have every had. We went out to dinner around pm on Tues and by 2 am Weds I was sick to my stomach spent the next day throwing up. I had heard the place was good that was completely wrong. Anyone who opens a Mexican restaurant should be required to do research on authentic Mexican food and flavor. Spend some time in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to get an idea of good Mexican food. There was no spice at all and what self respecting Mexican uses mozzarella cheese in their dishes. Don't waste your time and money its not worth it. read more

I want to start off by saying we have LOVED this restaurant for over 6 years now and have eaten here very regularly over that span. However the past 6-12 months the food has been AWFUL. We kept going back hoping they would go back to how good the food was originally. The birria is the blandest birria I've ever had. It was good when they first started making it but it tastes more like a regular pot roast than birria. Not to mention how disgustingly fatty it is because someone isn't actually taking the time to prep the meat correctly or sorting the meat / gristle & fat after cooking either. I have been here before and the food was OK, nothing to make me crave coming back but not too bad. My memory is failing me or they got much worse. Two of us for lunch. The place was busy but not chaotic. The bar crowd they attract was odd for a Mexican restaurant at lunch. Overall, not workers or shoppers grabbing lunch but more of a real bar crowd, like you might expect in the evening. We sat in the main restaurant but could hear and see the lively bar crowd. Food was really not good. I had a burrito, tasteless. My daughter had the chimichanga, also lacked flavor. Salsa and chips were plentiful but tasteless. Server was great! Very nice and welcoming. I found my dining experience to be very mediocre. I will not return here. The place itself was fine. They had some cute decor and I felt like I was at a cute-ish Mexican restaurant (that statement might be a little generous) but the server was a little cold to us, and I didn't like the food. Starting with the salsa, I thought it was some of the worst chips and salsa I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. I had to stop eating it. For lunch, we tried the chimichanga and a burrito. I have had plenty of Mexican food in my life, and for the northeast, this is the best!! Street tacos in LA are tough to beat but for mid coast Maine, you can't go wrong! Ok - I went to Las Palapas in Brewer - across the river from Bangor. (My first review was of the Bangor location) This time, I was pleased as a piglet! We asked for extra cilantro, more spice, and corn tortillas - and the chef did not disappoint. WAY more authentic flavors - and a nice ambiance. Had the fajitas, tamales, and enchiladas. The tortilla chips were warm and fresh, and the salsa was bright and refreshing. The margaritas were also quite tasty and generous! Came here when I was visiting UMO. Building itself was nice with decent atmosphere but was dirty. Food all over floor, chipped paint on walls, etc. Server was friendly but very slow, especially with the check. I was very disappointed with the food. Chips were stale and flavorless, and salsa tasted like it was straight out of a jar from Walmart. Huge menu but still couldn't find what I was looking for. Very unauthentic Mexican that all felt very 'cheap,' although the prices reflected quality that wasn't there. Both the chicken and beef were rubbery and freezer-burnt. All entrees were smothered in canned refried beans and a variety of mediocre sauces to seemingly mask the poor quality meat. The vegetables were bad as well. The lettuce was pink and wilted, the tomatoes tasted very expired. Authentic Mexican tastes light, vibrant, and flavorful but everything here tasted heavy, greasy, and bland. I'm not one to leave negative reviews and I try to find the good in all businesses, but I was extremely disappointed by this entire experience. The amount of food you get and the quality is second to none. Food is amazing and it comes out to you so quickly. The staff and owners are awesome. The atmosphere as a whole is just awesome. I've been here many many times and will be back many many more times. Food is killer. Only complaint I have is the fajita tortillas are two small for the amount of fajita fillings they give you....they need to use 10 inch tortillas instead of 6 inch....but that's just nit picking. As a California girl who has eaten a lot of authentic Mexican food, I will say Las Palapas is a milder version of what I'm used to, but not to say it's inedible. The service has always been fantastic no matter how busy the restaurant gets. The menu selection is huge; good for even my vegetarian friends. The food and drinks are inexpensive and the portions come large. If you order a drink, you're getting a DRANK. My spicy tolerance is very high so I often have to ask for extra, extra hot sauce on the side. It's decent Mexican food in a not heavily Mexican populated area so I take that into consideration. I also like that it accommodates large parties. So, come for the company, the service, the price, and the large portions of food and drink. read more

The waitress took a long time to bring us waters even after we ordered drinks (margaritas). Another staff member brought us our drinks, a different staff member brought us our margaritas, a different person took our food order, a Different person brought us our food. Our server only asked if we were good once we already had our food after our appetizer was cold. I ordered the shrimp fajitas and the food was mushy and had whole chunks of veggies. My dad ordered enchiladas and said they were crispy which was odd. The chicken quesadilla was good. The best part was the margaritas were great.
