Staying in this town for a week for work so decided to try the local fare. Had a nice outside patio but was cold so ate inside. The menu is like comfort food with German flair. Went with a colleague and had the chips and salsa to start that was fresh chips but the salsa would have been better if fresh made. For entree I had the Wiener schnitzel with spaetzel. The pasta dish was a little salty but overall very tasty including the mushroom gravy on top. Had water to drink after a long day but the real star of the show is their poor man's pecan pie dessert. It was a warm oatmeal cookie type pie served with some vanilla ice cream. Overall with limited offerings locally was a welcome retreat. read more

Because of the Disney/Pixar film "Cars", this place has become a Route 66 icon. I was really looking forward to coming here but the experience here was alright. Nothing too exciting, or anything like that. Don't get me wrong, the place was interesting since the building was made from stones that were mined while Route 66 was being built. The cafe had a lot of interesting items to choose from, but what I went with their signature buffalo burger with melted cheese on top with fries. It was alright for what it was. Afterwards, I browsed the gift shop next door and it was kind of weird because it was in one big room with no one in there. But I did get a few things to take home. They also let me take my soda cup as a souvenir. Not to be too picky but it would have been cool had owner Dawn Welch been there. One of the workers told me she's not there all the time, so...okay. We stopped here after a morning of hiking at Tulsa's Turkey Mountain. We were met by a very friendly hostess and sat right away. We were offered drinks so service here is awesome. We had the Texas toothpicks or I think they call it here cowboy candy. It's basically onions and jalapeños fried. Maybe I just need to quit ordering this because there's no heat in the jalapeños. They were good. Just not great. I was excited to order a buffalo burger and the BF got some German dish that looked amazing. I thought the overall taste of the food was just all right. It didn't wow me and then I had some major reflux later. The bf loves his. He had been talking about having bread pudding and they actually offered it so I assumed it was homemade and I was really excited to try it but again, the flavor was just OK. Do not eat here. Rock Cafe made my elderly parents wait in the 105 degree heat for almost 30 minutes. Then told us it would be another 20 minutes before they would seat us. I spoke with the hostess respectfully about it and she was incredibly rude, defensive and did not care that she had caused the over heating. Please do not support people like this. read more

This spot has been the my favorite stop of our road trip so far. We stopped here on Day 5 and it was incredible. Better than I even expected. The chicken fried steak was the best I've had anywhere and everything that was cooked on that old griddle was incredible. The pancakes were like there own food group. The only things I've ever had close to these were Aretha Frankenstein's in Chattanooga. These suckers were like 2 inches thick. Crispy butter outside, dense and cake liste inside. We've found the motherland of all cafes that are good here on Route 66. I am easily bestowing the title of best cafe/diner on this historic route to this one small ship in the middle of Oklahoma. Rock Cafe popped up in a few of our searches while we were planning our road trip, and while it took us nearly an entire day of driving from Springfield, MO to reach it, the decision was well worth the journey. It's off America's main street and has ample seating, great wall art, and a history that truly extends back with celebrities and travelers rushing past its doors. My friend and I split a couple of different items to try that were more than just the casual burger or milkshake that'd you find in most diners: - Cowboy Candy ($6.99) was our appetizer of fried onion strings with some dipping sauces. If this is what cowboys love, then I may need to strap on some boots myself. - Bison Burger ($10.50) - a legit ass burger that my friend devoured in an instant. Great quality meat and a side of fries. - Jagerschnitzel & Spaetz;e ($9.99) - this is where things get a bit more German on Route 66. A pork chop smothered in gravy with a cheesy side that I could not pronounce. Oh well, because everything about this dish was working for me. We ended our meal with a Peach Cobbler ($4.74) topped with vanilla ice cream and it was heaven. It's clear to me now that the more remote parts of the road can often unfold some of the best eateries out there. I love the Rock Cafe!!! I've made the trip there a handful of times now, and it's always been a good experience. Yes, it may be a bit out of the way for lots of people, but it's definitely worth it in my opinion! It has a true small town country atmosphere. I wouldn't really call it a diner (because it's less retro and more rustic than that) but I also don't really know what else I'd call it. It was featured in an episode of diners, drive ins, and dives (super cool!!!!) so maybe a little bit of each of those? The staff is always sweet and friendly, just like you'd expect from a place like this. They are always knowledgeable of the menu and are not only ready to help but do it with a smile on their face too. And then there's the food! It's no wonder this place gets a good amount of hype! I've had a lot of catfish and this is by far the best I've ever had. Seriously! If you're a catfish loving person and haven't been here yet, you need to try it out sometime for sure. It's super flakey with also a buttery texture. The flavor is excellent. You can order it fried original or beer battered. Personally, I'd recommend the original style, but that's just a preference thing I guess. You do you. I usually order it with the side of fries which are good too. Sometimes we'll get an order of fried pickles to share, which are also AMAZING. Again, probably some of the best I've had anywhere. I like them because they are sour, which I love when it comes to pickles. They're also fairly salty, so if you aren't into either of those things then fair warning... but who wants a pickle (fried or not) that isn't sour and salty anyway?!? The portions for everything are large. I don't think I've ever left with a "happy plate", which, contrary to the phrase, actually makes me happy! THE ONLY thing that makes me sad is that the catfish is only served in Friday's. BUT I take it with a grain of salt, because they do this for good reason. They get it fresh in each Friday so it's not sitting there all week long. This also means that once they're out, they're out, and you're out of luck until next week! Just finished lunch here at Rock Cafe. It was not a great experience. We were a party of 8 including small children. They were not willing to put 2-4 chair tables together stating they needed the pass through to refill drinks. Drinks could easily be refilled by walking around 2 tables put together the same as 1 individual table. Larger parties prefer to be seated together as one group. It is especially difficult when you have young children. How can take care of your children when they are sitting at 2 different tables? FOOD: Hotdog was good but the chili had to be canned and was over served, AWESOME Coleslaw like my grandma used to make...Peach Cobbler was doughy and the ice cream tasted like cheap sugar! The Young Wait Staff were so helpful and pleasant. The older staff were Rude and Condescending. I would not recommend this restaurant. Very very disappointed. read more

We've been to Stroud's Rock Cafe multiple times. Though it has been years since we've been, generally the staff is friendly and the food is good. Today, our waitress was not just rude, but went out of her way to be rude. [For context, I want to mention I'm in liver failure. This affects my memory and decision making.] When you arrive at The Rock Cafe, they have 2 doors. A solid black door (at the back of the building) and a door with a window on it (at the front of the building). I had forgotten they changed their entrance to the solid black door. So, I tried opening the one with the window and it was locked. A lady (who would be our waitress) opened the door, rudely inquired if there was something wrong with the other door (which she knew there wasn't), and stated I was at the handicapped entrance. Now, I will state they do have signage on the doors. But, in my defense, customers are going to be naturally drawn to a door at the front of the building with a window on it versus a solid black door at the back of a building. I admit, I didn't fully read the sign on the front door (I just saw the words "handicapped entrance" and an arrow). But, instead of having any understanding about this, the waitress stood in my way and lectured me regarding which entrance I should use. I apologized and immediately started to walked to the correct entrance and she said she would let me in, but didn't move out of the way and continued the lecture. So, I started to walk towards the other entrance a second time, at which point she finally decided to let me in, what seems to be her personal entryway.*** I brushed this off and tried to enjoy a meal with my wife. For the remainder of our meal, the staff was there. That's all I can really say. They did their job and that's it. My wife (who arrived before me) commented on a waiter who took our drink order before I arrived. He had come by to ask what she wanted to eat and she told him she was waiting for me, at which point he just turned and walked off without saying a word. I mean, it's not horribly rude, but not polite either. Later, after we had finished our meal, the same waitress from before commented on the cuteness of our service dog. And, my wife started to respond to her, and the waitress literally walked away from my wife as she was talking to her. They were having a polite, upbeat conversation, that the waitress initiated, and the waitress walked off AS MY WIFE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE. They were not even busy at the time. The same waitress had no issue having a several minute long conversation with the people sitting behind us, but apparently 30 seconds was the limit for our table. *** For the record, I HAVE HAD AN OKLAHOMA STATE HANDICAP PLACARD FOR OVER 15 YEARS. While I can walk, I have difficulty with it at times as I've had 18 surgeries in my life, 4 on my brain stem and spine. I suffer from a lot of nerve damage and weakness (especially in my legs) as a result. And I find it incredibly offensive that some waitress would just assume someone isn't handicapped because they're standing. Luckily, today was one of my better days and I didn't need to sit down immediately. If I had, going through a waitress/bouncer for admission through a handicapped entrance is HIGHLY inappropriate, and probably not even legal. Next time, just let the customer in the door. If you want to be a jerk, tell them it's the handicapped entrance so they know for next time. Or, better yet, don't lock the door. Because if there were a fire, making customers run down a hallway by the kitchen, where the fire would likely be, seems like an issue. There is no reason to stand in their way, be rude, or take it any further. But, it won't be my concern. Because this was my last visit to The Rock Cafe. read more

A must stop if we are passing through Stroud or in the mood for a car cruise along Route 66. Great food, good portions and prices, super friendly always. This weekend we enjoyed some of the best service anywhere from two young teenagers. Very impressed with their hustle! They were an excellent team during a busy hour. Saw this featured on Triple D with Guy Fieri. So, as an anniversary adventure, my husband and I decided to go. It's about a two hour drive from home, but that's kind of what we do, marriage and food are an adventure...so off we go. We park around back, we walk clear to the opposite end of the building because the entrance is at the far right and back of the building. No big deal. We enter, we choose our seat (small seating area) and I can imagine it is uncomfortable on a busy day, but we almost have the place to ourselves. Our order: Fried Green Tomato Starter Bacon Cheeseburger Jäegersnitzel (that's how it's spelled on the menu) Side of Fried Pickles Oatmeal Pie We start on a high note: Fried Green tomatoes almost ended our 20-year marriage when he took the three biggest ones. They are so good. Batter is flavorful, and fried to perfection. The burger is a burger. Yes the small bits of bacon are nice, but honestly, it's a good just burger. Fries...same. The jäegerschnitzel was quite delicious. I LOVED the spaetzle, that was the stuff for me. Luckily, my husband didn't care for the texture (think sticky chicken and dumplins) so I had most of those. The pickles were pretty salty, the batter is so good, but not on an already salty pickle. The crunch is good, but just too much salt. Oatmeal pie is delectable and a must try. It's super original, it's tasty, gooey, and great. Take my advice, get it a la mode. BUT the pièce de résistance is truly the service. They are super friendly, caring, and attentive. If you want legit diner food, Rock Cafe is it. I got the bacon cheeseburger. It was perfectly cooked. They use chopped up pieces of bacon, so you get a ton of bacon in every bite. They also grill the onions for the burgers. The fries were piping hot. Service was really nice. We were constantly checked on. Cool facts: - The cafe is made up of sandstone leftover from the construction of Route 66. - A character in the Pixar movie "Cars" was supposedly based off the owner of the cafe. This place was super cute and worth the visit for sure. As a vegan it was hard to find breakfast items I could eat, but they were very nice and made their house spaetzle for me without the cheese. (Typically this is only served at lunch/dinner). There were onions, peppers and tomatoes, which really balanced out the richness of the German noodles. There was a lot of grease, so if I returned I would maybe soak it up a little first before eating. Hubby got the spaetzle with cheese and also loved it. The staff was super friendly of course, all smiles and genuinely nice people. The gift shop was pretty cute, kind of sparse, but I became interested in this little Route 66 puzzle and was soon addicted. I actually bought it just so I can take it home and solve it. Called to ask a question regarding busy times and dine in options and the lady over the phone rudely answered one question and then asked me, "is this your simple question or is there more?" And then awkwardly laughed. It made me super uncomfortable and I can only imagine how that must treat guests inside their building. Super unprofessional and has lost my business from here on out. Never tried to food but attitudes speak volumes. Don't go to this place. Terrible terrible terrible. --update: the owner gave a half backed response and you can see the attitude. As a professional, an apology for misunderstanding would have sufficed. Glad we just kept driving though instead of stopping here. Also, positing a review on a restaurant isn't bullying. Dining room dark, dingy, aging badly, tables sticky, booths falling apart, ripped apolstry taped shut. Staff seemed miserable. Our server was just going through the motions, seemed to not care if we were there at all. No greeting, no smiles, just cold indifference and short talks. Offered nothing to flavor my daughter's oatmeal. My slice of oatmeal pie came room temp, not heated. I just assumed it would be heated up, but she never gave me an option. Took a half hour to get a slice of pie and a nasty bowl of flavorless oatmeal. Meanwhile while we waited two tables with local regulars who came in AFTER us were served their full breakfasts. We left with oatmeal untouched. A second server asked then how our meal was. I shared these issues. He then asks if we live locally. I said no that we live in OKC. He then runs my card, says nothing more to me. It was ridiculous. Aging and sad, service nonexistent. I had my daughter with me who loves both Route 66 and the movie Cars. It is good, the staff is super friendly and the décor and old rock building make it worth the stop. We tried the buffalo burger and the chicken fried steak. The buffalo burger was a generous portion of ground meat. It was cooked on a flat top and served with grilled onions along with the typical condiments. Between the grilled onions, being a little over cooked and the shared flavors picked up on the flat top, the great taste of the buffalo was lost. Buffalo should never be cooked over medium rare (that is how I ordered it). It was a good burger, but if you order it, hold the onions, cheese and beg them to cook it rare to medium rare. The fried okra ...typical. The chicken fried steak was good too; it was just not one that would be considered in the top ten in Oklahoma. It was very tender and came with a large helping of mashed potatoes, gravy and fried okra (or two other sides of your choice). Good food, friendly staff, unique place! I'm now convinced that Guy Fieri (Triple D) is more of an advertisement than a food critic.. I've been noticing for quite some time now, he never ever say something he's eating is terrible.. Not to say that this place is horrible but to each their own.. Not a big fan myself tbh.. 1)Everything we ordered was barely warm.. 2)Smothered pork cutlet was less than okay.. the sauerkraut didn't do it justice imo, made the pork taste oddly sour, giving me a taste of maybe old meat.. Not saying that it is tho 3)Buffalo burger had a ok taste but it was dry like it had been over cooked, which I find kinda odd for it being almost cold 4)Rock cafe spaetzel was slightly better tasting than the other 2 just mentioned but not spectacular at all.. Took a destination dining trip to the iconic Rock Cafe. It was such a nice drive out and we had a great time. The food was good. The mashed potatoes were real and super tasty. The atmosphere is comfy and cozy and the wait staff were super helpful. The menu has quite a selection so it was hard to decide. We ended up with chicken fried steak with mashed and okra and Chicken bites with okra and fried green tomatoes. I loved the fried green tomatoes.
