Yea nothing like a Rock Harbor sunset. Sometimes if you time it right you catch the sport fishing fleet coming in before or just after the tide change with super happy anglers and filled fishing boxes. The site of these boats against the western sky and the pine tree lined entrance way to Rock Harbor from Cape Cod Bay is really memorable. Some broken clouds that offer the best sunset in the west, maybe a touch of haze in July and wait the rare opportunity when the tide is way out so there are miles of wet and salty newly created beach-front that offer up some serious sunset hiking. And then............there is the famous, never to be denied, discussed never in public Rock Harbor sunset cocktail members. Not that this is a club but you can pretty much walk by the first row closest to the beach and watch the perfect martini being poured in the passenger seat.. A little music, a little alcohol who knows ....a little magic back at the cottage. Rock Harbor sunset viewing is an Orleans tradition. Mostly attended by the more experienced or should I say retired. But it does catch on and as the tourist season picks up the gathering brings down the average age into the just after college category...and especially if the tide is out. So bring your cooler, kids, frisbee (no dogs in season ..too bad) and a definite is a camera. I'm thinking the perfect accesory is the a 12v powered margarita machine that helps put the evening over the top. read more

Rock Harbor at sunset is something you have got to see if you happen to be in the fair town of Orleans. Throughout my life I have spent many an evening tip-toeing across the jetty, eating ice cream, listening to a steel drum player as the orange, yellow, reds and pinks melt into the water. If sunset happens to be at low tide, you can take this opportunity to walk out for a mile, past the trees that during high tide mark a pathway for the boats, past crab traps, past rocks...it feels like you can walk forever. Daytime at Rock Harbor is a different story. As a teenager I worked at a little fish store by the marina. I'd see all the boat captains and first mates (talk about sexy!) as I sunned myself. Tourists that had chartered boats would come back from sea, some looking queasy and some reveling in the fact that they had caught beautiful stripers and blues. The salty sea dogs that I knew (Captain M*** the Lobster Slayer, shellfishermen galore) reminded me that Cape Cod isn't just a playground for the wealthy not wealthy enough to have a home on Nantucket. Cape Cod's fishing culture goes far back (my family included), and is as fascinating as it is fucked up (Fisherman pretty much equals drug addict or alcoholic), but I love it. If you're on Cape Cod and you want a little dose of reality, come here. You're still going to get the tourists, but you'll also get a bit of life on the Cape, year rounder style. read more

My first memory is me as a little girl playing with the hermit crabs at low tide. This place means the world to me. I love to show my friends these little creatures. I deeply enjoy walking out at low tide and playing with hermit crabs and talking to my friends. Walking out on the rocks is so much fun. The funniest thing is to hear what people think that the trees are there for. They DO NOT naturally grow there. They are put there to mark the boat channel. read more

Got some fried chicken from the super market for the kids then drove hereand got Lobster rolls from the shack in the parking lot. Pulled out the beach chairs. Sat in the lot with our feet up on the rail that separates the water from the pavement. Looked over the boats, harbor, watched lobstermen pull up in their pick ups to buy and fill their tubs up with, what I later found out was bait. Walked down to the end of the jetty, low tide, kids went running everywhere. Yeah summer. read more

Took the family out on the Roxy, Captained by Tom Hayes with his first mate Chris. It was a beautiful day and the fish were biting. We could not keep all the ones we caught. Kept six and Chris expertly filleted them. They kept us all involved, explaining the sites on shore and telling some good fishing stories. Great day had by all. Highly recommend the trip! read more

Go to cape every summer, and go fishing every couple years out of different harbors. Went out on the Stunmai 11 this summer out of rock harbor and was a terrible experience. On my previous fishing trips the captains were fun and easy going. Not on the Stunmai though, Capt Farrell just barks orders and yells at everyone on the boat. Was a very unpleasant experience and took all the fun out of the fishing trip. Simply put, avoid this boat if you're going out of rock harbor and want to have any fun. read more

Wish I could put my memories & experiences down as eloquently as Briana & Warren! but I'll try. Have spent some of the best moments of of my 51 yrs here in fact; off & on. Cut my teeth in the back of MacReed's listening to my grandfather Larry O'Brien and god rest his soul MacReed do the dance of where the stripers were fabled to be biting. There must have been many a bookie in the coves. Many times woke up to a rocking feeling, in a thick red wool zip up sweater that i know i didn't zip and to a coffee mug being stuffed into my hands at 4 yrs old in Papa's boat before sunrise. He taught me to pluck those sea-worms with the pinchers from their sea-weed/peat-mossed cardboard beds and onto the hooks. In slow times, Larry would give my line a tug to wake me as my body leaned protectively over the slack rod. That used to really piss me off and then keep me on my toes. Those were the trips where i was really glad that Nana (Lilly) had packed sandwiches for us. She was a loving and fun soul, but no dummy. She knew a few well-packed sandwiches would give her a few more hours of peaceful sleep before she had to fillet our catch at the Fish N Fiddle at the Collins' at Town Cove. I remember catching 24" stripers and Huge flounders out the mouth of the cove on the turn of the tide. Anyway, no matter the luck of the day we would almost always end up at Rock Harbor for sunset. When I reached the cynical old age of 7 I almost fell for it when they told me to listen for the "sizzle" when the sun hit the horizon. That also pissed me off, so next day they made it up to me with some clam chowder at Captn Cass'. read more
