Despite the reviews, I was hungry and visiting my family who live less than 5 minutes away from the restaurant. I like barbecue and I decided to give Rock Sore Bar-B-Q a try. Well....I am disappointed. The food is lackluster - no flavor in the chopped chicken or pulled pork, the hush puppies were overcooked, the banana pudding was not good, and the sauces in the bottles at the table added ZERO flavor to the meat. The barbecue beans were dry and flavorless, and the potato wedges were like warm. Everything was so deficient in flavor that I am concerned if anyone understands barbecue. My wife enjoyed the wings, and that is why this rating is 3 stars. I was so disappointed in my meal that I didn't try her wings. The interior was clean and orderly, and the workers were generally friendly. The food came up quickly, but everything was lukewarm. I am hopeful I caught the Rock Store on a bad day. I will try them again, for the wings, on a future visit to Waxhaw, NC. read more

Food is gross!! The ladies are so nice but the food is absolutely awful. Temps of the meat are room temperature. Zero flavor, buns cheapest you can find. I would imagine they basically crockpot the pork sandwich in water with zero seasoning. The sauces are so watered down it's not even a sauce and provides basically a soggy sandwich with zero added flavor. Sweet tea is extremely light. They even cheap'ed out on the amount of tea bags because it's glorified water with a hint of tea and a tiny sweet. It tastes like fake sugar as well. Messing up southern sweet tea in the south is a solid sin! Slaw lacks sauce and is dry. The banana pudding is gross. Cheap vanilla instant pudding and some wafers on top that are soggy and stale for sure. It tastes several days old. Zero bananas and zero banana flavoring. It tastes like cheap Walmart brand instant vanilla pudding on the day it needs to be thrown away! After a few more tastes I realize the texture is off. It tastes like the milk in the mix is curdled- gross as it gets. She passed it onto her boss. She said it's supposed to have actual bananas in it; zero bananas. Soooooo bad. read more

1 star is generous! The food is the worse tasting food I have ever had. The meat was dry, the sauces were watered down, the bread so bland, the chicken was gross and the Mac and cheese and cole slaw went to the trash after the initial tasting. Dang Rock store barbecue... you're a rock star ! The place is small but it's huge on flavor ! I tried the BBQ beef sandwich and seriously I considered the fact that I wish I could eat more ! It was the bomb dot com ! Really really really ( 3 reallys ) good. The hubs had the banana pudding and he went back for seconds. It was 100 degrees outside and we were both sweltering hot but this joint was cool. The seats were worn but no doubt they've been weathering the crowds that come here. The employees here are friendly and we had no issues with them. If I could rate customer service separately I'd give them a solid 4. Onto the food, we had a family deal and chose chicken, baked beans, mac n cheese, and potato wedges. We also ordered a small potato salad to taste and a cucumber onion salad. Chicken: okay, no flavor so it must have sauce Beans: out of a can Mac n cheese: frozen food Wedges: good and seasoned well Potato Salad: weird, not good Cucumber Onion salad: ok, mostly vinegar juice with about 4 cucumbers and 2 slices of onion Overall, we wouldnt visit again but if you're not expecting more than frozen food quality you'd probably be happy. read more

Maybe it was an off day but the pulled pork and brisket sandwiches were just ok. I was really expecting more from the brisket and looking forward to that slab sandwich. Unfortunately, they pulled the brisket as well - I couldn't tell the difference between the pork and brisket just by looking at it. The hush puppies were better but over done on the outside. BUYER BEWARE Ordered 2 pounds of the beef total cost was $28.00. When I asked the guy to weigh it he blew me off and started telling me he was going to add extra BBQ sauce to my purchase. This was pulled pork all day long. Did not look or taste at all like beef. Tasted exactly like pulled pork. The lady insisted it was beef. We were charged for 3 plates instead of 2. Above all else, the two times I have been through the drive through the staff have been rude. It is as if I am inconveniencing them for giving them my business when there are several other BBQ joints I can go to. Even if their food was amazing, the customer service ruined it. The first visit I ordered a late lunch, it was dead in the place. I hit the drive-thru to order and the guy working the window seems annoyed first that I simply exist, then even more so that I don't know what kinds of sauce they have when he asks (its not on the menu). He hands me the order and I start to drive away, I first open the box to grab a hushpuppy and see what looks to be chopped pork. I've eaten my share of BBQ in my 31 years and know that Beef Brisket is something that should be a single piece of meat that is sliced...unless otherwise stated on the menu or by the waiter/waitress. I back up to the window (again, its dead, no one around), and the guy (even MORE annoyed) opens the window and asks "What did you need?" I tell him I ordered Brisket and this looks like chopped pork. He looks at me like I'm insane and says "Thats beef." I assume I missed seeing on the menu that it was chopped and just say "Okay" and head home. (Chopped brisket makes me think that its possibly a lesser cut of meat so they chop it so you can't tell, or that its not cooked as a proper brisket should so they chop it and add sauce to try to improve the dry meat). The brisket was alright, a little dry, the sauce helped. The sides (mac and cheese and cucumber salad) were good, as were the hush puppies. The customer service made me not want to go back. About 3-4 months later my wife is craving BBQ so I decide to give them a second chance. I pull to the drive-thru and sit for a little bit (where I notice the menu there says nothing about the brisket being chopped). Finally a woman opens the window and leans forward and stares at me as I say "Hey, how are you?"......(awkward pause before she responds)......she says "What can I get you?", so I order since she is all about that business. I place my order, including an extra order of hushpuppies, she replies to me as if I am an idiot and tells me the plates come with hushpuppies. I inform her that I know they come with it, but I want more (because they were the highlight of my previous visit). She then asks what sauces I want, so I ask what kind they have (I can't remember from my last visit, and it is still not on the menu outside) she lists them off very quickly. I say "I want the mustard sauce aaaaaand..." she quickly interrupts reminding me what the other two sauces were, very annoyed with my delay. I tell her the second sauce and without a word she closes the window and walks away. She comes back and tells me the price so I hand her my card, again without a word she walks away. She brings the card and food and with a "Here you go." passes it to me and closes the window. The Pork was dry, sides (again) were good...but the highlight of my last trip, the hushpuppies, were cold, dry, and stale...they were even worse than the BBQ. The highlight this trip was the banana pudding, it was good. You can get better BBQ and just as good of sides elsewhere, but even if the food was incredible - with customer service like that why would you want to go there? Looking forward to checking out JB's but even more excited that JoJo's is coming to Waxhaw. read more

PERFECT! While adjusting from withdrawal from several types of cuisine after 2 years in the Bay Area, (but after spending most of our lives on this side of the Mississippi), we were optimistic that we could find great BBQ in NC. We did. As other reviewers have indicated, the pulled pork may seem a tad dry out of the cup - FOR SOME- it's MORE than made up for by the high quality of the super-tender meat and, once you add one of their SUBLIME sauces, that no longer matters. Ribs are fall-off-the-bone wonderful. They would be great dry - but add their rib sauce...:) Coleslaw and banana pudding are great sides. Sweet hushpuppies couldn't be better. As is often the case with great homestyle food, the storefront may be offputting. Hope that keeps it from becoming too popular. We want to savor the quick turnaround at a new favorite. Awful! I stopped by to order 3 hot wing combos, 1 with potato wedges and 2 with cucumber and onion salad with 3 sweet teas without ice. I get home and had 3 bbq sandwiches, 2 potato wedges, and 1 cucumber and onion salad and 3 sweet teas. I called them immediately and told them what happened and that I was already at home, but that I would come back out to get what I asked for. It was the same young lady who waited on me who answered the phone and apologized. When I get back there, a young man tells me that I ordered sandwiches. He wanted the sandwiches back, but I had not brought them with me when I returned. The young lady took my order down completely wrong and I was told that I would have to pay again to get my order. I gave them another chance after some time because they were ALWAYS out of wings. That was my last time.
