Finally got around to giving out one of my rare 5-star ratings, as Maxwell's Tavern just does it right. Sorry that they cannot control the availability of parking, so drop your party off to get in line and then have your own adventure in parking. It's a bar, but a very nice, clean bar, a super menu, daily specials for drinks and food and a nice chummy atmosphere to enjoy. Prices are reasonable and service spot-on. Maryrose took us on for lunch and kept the iced tea flowing. Wife had lunch nachos ($9.95), which were OK, but needed more cheese. We did take some home, but with the sour cream in it did not make it appetizing any more. I had a combination chile and half BLT ($10.25) which was excellent. The BLT was lunch enough for me, so I took the chile home for later. The side o'day was fried okra and we loved it ($4) and paid the extra $.40 for their excellent ranch dressing. Come at other than prime times for lunch and dinner. Benches outside are because it is a very popular place and you will warm those benches if you hit busy times. read more

We came here with our family for lunch the other day and enjoyed it! We had salads and a club sandwich. My salad was tasty with fried chicken tossed in sweet/spicy sauce and their ranch tasted homemade. The onion rings were very crispy and good but I couldn't figure out how fried onions with no sauce costs $11. The space itself is very small and not stroller friendly at all. We sat out on their small patio and trying to navigate getting a stroller through the restaurant was quite the challenge. I would probably go back if I didn't have my baby with me. read more

Why does Maxwell's seemingly always have a wait list? Because their food, waitstaff & historic but noisy ambiance makes for the perfect Tavern. And in good weather they have a patio outback! Our favorites include the Wednesday/Friday Fish & Chips with that tiny scoop of killer Cole slaw - add a "seasonal" salad and Life is Good. Came in for dinner with my family and we were hungry and ready to eat something good. Walked in and we were greeted by the hostess at the front. Asked how many in our party and we were seated right away, yay. Sat a spacious corner booth and proceeded to look over the menu. The ambiance was relaxed and very festive. Add we were getting ready to leave and boxing up our leftovers we put the salads in one bowl and noticed a stowaway in our salad. Employee noticed us looking at the little critter and asked if everything was okay. We let her know there was a bug in our salad and she seamed indifferent and began explaining how they have no control over situations like this. My thought was are you kidding me, I expected a different response. She did bring us a new salad, however, it's not what we wanted. Our first time at Maxwell's was iconic--power outage everywhere else, everyone piled in because they still had electricity, great energy, great vibe. That was also when I had my first Mediterranean mule, which was genuinely excellent. Sadly, the food on our most recent visit did not understand the assignment. The fried pickles were aggressively salty--like, you get six or seven in and your mouth starts filing a complaint. I was hyped for the collards because the texture was actually great, but they were shockingly sweet. Not "hint of sweetness," but "why do these taste like dessert" sweet. Same story with the coleslaw: very finely chopped cabbage and way too much sugar. Our waiter was super nice, and I wasn't even trying to get replacement food--just wanted to pass along feedback. He did offer to swap it out but mentioned the collards are a family recipe, so... sounds like this is very much on purpose. Overall, Maxwell's clearly commits hard to salty‑sweet flavors. If that's your thing, you'll probably be happy. If not, come for the drinks and vibe and maybe lower expectations on the food. read more

This is a Waxhaw and local favorite! There is a lot of history in the building itself and the food is always consistently excellent. My favorite is the ribeye sandwich. The steak is so soft it melts in your mouth. The wings are really big, tasty and you can't go wrong with any of the offered sauces. Because of its popularity, you need to get there early. If there is a wait it usually goes by quickly. There are benches outside where you can sit and watch as the occasional train go by. Maxwells is definitely one of my favorites!! read more

Not happy with the increasing menu prices. Paid $11 dollars for a plate of 9 onion rings. Frozen from an bag. Not freshly battered and fried. I had the fish and chips. I asked for extra crispy for both and neither was. Rest of the party ordered the ribeye sandwich and they were very happy. There server was excellent. Best we have ever had. Met a friend here as it was the only restaurant in the area with something "plain" enough on the menu that I could eat... and I was pleasantly surprised how they worked with my current restrictions... Gluten-free marinated grilled chicken, delicious green beans cooked in chicken stock & fresh steamed broccoli that was steamed to the perfect tenderness! The chicken was AMAZING. Full of flavor. The broccoli even had awesome flavor (I had 2 servings!) and the green beans, while they weren't very "green" anymore having soaked for so long in the chicken stock, they had a good flavor as well. The waiter was attentive, listened, was patient and served us very quickly. The tavern is in an old downtown building with awesome brick walls that's both cozy, modern, and ancient all at the same time. The place was at the end of a small strip of stores and it did not disappoint. The staff was so friendly and we were seating about 10 minutes after arrival. Once seated, our server gave us the rundown of some food items and recommended the onion rings for a start, which were a miss. The onion inside was too thick to enjoy and the rued ring was not crispy enough to help. They do however have a very good ranch to dip in. My wife ordered a blood orange margarita which had great flavor and an IPA that was good as well. So I ordered the Texan burger and it was pretty good, the bacon was crispy however it could have used more bbq sauce. They give you the sauce to put on yourself, but I feel that a cop out to making a good burger. My wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which tasted great but also was a killer light on the sauce. The flavor was good and tender. I would definitely give this place another try, very good and lots of potential for better things to come. read more

Our daughter took her infant son, her dad and me to Maxwell's on a visit to Waxhaw yesterday and I can say without hesitation that Roger provided us with some of the best table service we have ever had (in spite of not being a "beer guy!"). Not only was he patient and professional, he was intuitive, kind and witty. Massive kudos to Roger. We started with an order of fried pickle chips, which we inhaled. The ranch was the perfect accompaniment. Our daughter had an Asian salad, my husband the fried flounder sandwich (bless you for the extra tartar sauce, Roger--no one ever remembers) and I the barbecued pulled pork sandwich, the latter two items served with great coleslaw and excellent french fries. Soda and water were refilled unobtrusively and our grandson was admired unfeignedly. All our meals were delicious but I didn't make much of a dent in my pork because I had made a beast of myself with the pickles. Roger brought me a box and a lid for my cup of unused sauce () and we pushed our stomachs and the stroller out of Maxwell's, heavier but with light hearts.
