So all we had here were a few drinks & the cheese curds. But I do give it five stars for both! Best espresso martini we had in Bozeman -- perfect amount of sweetness, creaminess, and espresso flavor. I'd come back for that. The cheese curds were also great, served warm and perfectly crispy with a good ranch on the side. The bar was full on a Monday night as the games were on, so it was a fun, louder bar environment but with so much space that you don't feel packed at all, especially with the large bar. The dart boards are oddly placed in a highly trafficked spot so you had to check both ways before throwing, or stand and wait for the space to clear. Getting a drink was also oddly hard, even though it wasn't busy when we came. Before we left for our trip to Bozeman, a friend at home told us about the Rocking R Bar. She said we absolutely HAD to go. When we finally did arrive in Bozeman, I looked the Rocking R up and saw it was 15 miles from our Air BNB. I texted my friend and asked her if it was REALLY worth the drive and she assured me it was. Ok then, I guess we had no choice but to have dinner at the Rocking R Bar. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and told to sit anywhere we wanted. We picked a high-top near the bar - it had good views of the many TVs above it. We were quickly handed an extensive drink menu (really a drink menu book) and our waitress, Haley, went over some of the features including their $10 flight promotions. (4 4oz pours and then a pint of your favorite), the happy hour specials (beer specials, $5 martinis, $7 mixed drinks, 5-7 weekdays) and finally the shot specials ($3 and $5). Other drink specials were posted around the walls so I asked about the $10 "tank". Turns out it is only available on Thursday. This was Wednesday. Bummer. We were given a food menu which was heavy on burgers and sandwiches but had some interesting looking apps and a few salads listed too - definitely not the place for a vegan. I ordered the aloha burger. It was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. A weird combination that worked - the fresh patty (I asked for medium well but it was definitely medium, no biggie) topped with grilled pineapple slices, crispy thick cut bacon and jalapeño cream cheese. (It may have had pepper jelly too but I can't remember - a little too many martinis may have clouded my memory a little.) Oh my gosh was this burger good. If you plan on ordering this though, don't wear anything you don't want to get food on - this was one messy burger. House cut shoestring fries rounded out my meal. The mound of fries, served with a side of ranch, were awesome. My husband ordered the elk burger. Haley told us that the elk meat comes from a local farm. He enjoyed it - it was a little gamey but he expected that. (His medium burger was definitely on the rare side). He ordered the side salad which contained spring mix with a decent handful of salad veggies on top. Because our food came out at the same as our flight, he didn't order his pint until we were through eating. Since I wasn't the driver, I opted to try the happy hour martinis instead. I started with the PAMA, moved to the purple haze and finally finished with another PAMA. This sounds like a lot, and it could have been, but the first two drinks were only 2/3 full. If you pull out your 9th grade geometry hat and think about the shape of a martini glass, they were almost just like large shots. Even so, they were good. The bar got more crowded as the evening progressed. It was country night which didn't start until 9:30. We got up at 3:15 to catch our flight that morning, 9:30 just wouldn't be happening for us. There was country music playing but it wasn't so loud as to make conversation difficult. We found parking out front but I'm not sure where you'd park - I'd give myself a little time for parking if you are on any type of schedule. Our final check was just over $60, which considering all we had, I thought was pretty reasonable. We'll be back in Bozeman next Thursday. It just may be "tank" night for me! read more

Upon arrival on a bestie trip to Montana (first time in this great state!) we decided to walk around the downtown area before going out to our house rental and have a drink. Our first night on our Montana vacation we went downtown Bozeman and found the Rocking R Bar. Since our bodies were still in a different time zone we just sampled and shared some appetizers and shared a sample flight of local craft beers. We had fried green tomatoes and fish fingers! The food was excellent and we enjoyed the bar atmosphere but sat toward the outside patio since the weather was excellent in Montana not humid like in Kentucky. Why would yelp steer me wrong? Answer: it wouldn't. I usually don't go anywhere with less than 4 stars. I was against going to this place in the first place. Have VERY VERY VERY low expectations of this place and maybe it will be okay. This place was dead when we went in at 730pm for dessert. We sat down at the bar and we were talked in to trying a spiked milkshake. The bartender first put the wrong order in because he was not listening. We flagged him down and he changed the order. After waiting 30 minutes we left cash for the item we never received (because my S/O is a good person) and left. 10/10 never would recommend. Also, we went half a block to a great place downstairs. The guy sitting next to me at that bar informed me this place is a college bar. Everything is much clearer in hindsight. Bar still sucks though. read more

My wife and I had a late lunch mid afternoon last Saturday. We sat in front so I could hold onto our dog's leash as he sat in the shade on the sidewalk just on the other side of railing of the bar.
