This gym is small but these guys are the real deal-they offer expert CF instruction, they are sticklers for form, they explain the context of the movements, and they are very attentive during skill/strength work and WODs. They could not have been more welcoming when I first visited, and I always feel welcome going back. They are a skilled and supportive community of athletes, with a range of skills and ages. If I lived in the area this would be my gym. When I visit typical class size is about 10, which is an ideal size IMO. The gym is small but spacious-it has two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows, high ceilings, and excellent airflow. They've got a nice rig that could accommodate about 10 bars simultaneously and an excellent supply of weights and other equipment. It is about as pleasant as a CF gym is ever going to get! The Details: Several years ago I switched from traditional conditioning (machines, rote freeweight exercises) to functional training. If I only knew sooner... The trainer who originally taught me and my kids moved out of reach. Since then I've engaged in a pretty arduous search and ended up at SOS. As far as I can tell, it's one of a handful of gyms of its kind in the Boston area, and it happens to be at 73 Princeton St., North Chelmsford MA 01863 (https://www.skillofstrength.com). SOS does a terrific job of translating cutting edge methods to well structured and original routines that can be followed by all levels of ability. On one hand there's a somewhat more casual crowd that does a modified version of the day's program (I'm in their MOVE class) and they seem quite content. I'm absolutely, 100% all for that. At the same time, there's another crowd that's always pushing for the next level. Despite the wide ranging audience, SOS underscores the experience with some very subtle social norms - very healthy, and it creates a great vibe. My first experience with SOS was sending my high school aged son through their COMPETE program. It accomplished everything I was hoping for - measurable gains in quickness, strength, cardio, reinforcement of footwork, increased confidence, and familiarization with a vocabulary that athletes require if they're going to progress. All in a personal, incredibly positive environment. Why SOS works for me: starting in my teens and stretching into my late 30's I spent a good portion of time working with skill coaches and strength & conditioning coaches. Together, they made a huge difference in my progress. I don't play a sport anymore, but I still want a technical workout oriented toward increased fitness. SOS delivers in spades. I'm a bug for technique - I actually believe that 5 pounds done right is better than 50 pounds done wrong. As a result I'm constantly asking questions, getting terrific guidance, and no one's lost patience or interest - instead, they seem to be totally into it. SOS has also taught me additional, helpful routines for balance (which are actually fun, and this stuff is supposed be fun), and I'm still pulling myself together on their footwork drills - happily. If you have kids or student athletes who would benefit from a thoughtful, engaging workout, or if you're looking for something different and well structured, or if you simply burn for a good workout, SOS is a terrific place.

I still have a ways to go, but I am more flexible and better coordinated than I have ever been. My back problems have lessened dramatically, and I couldn't pull this off anywhere else. LFG is much more than a gym. It's a community where people form friendships and truly work together to help everyone around them succeed. It is just plain fun. The credit for that goes to the LFG team, who put community at the center of everything they do. They do much more than instruct and put us through our paces. They keep tabs on everyone's birthdays. Getting married? Shaina will organize a "bridal shower workout." I love walking in there, no matter how tired or sore I am. I see the instructors and my fellow members and everything just brightens. If you have always avoided the gym because of the usual culture, LFG is your answer. I honestly don't know what I'd do without this place. Chris is tough. He busts my balls. My wife had dropped off our son to LFG and told the girl working the desk that we wanted to cancel my son's membership. She said okay. Then, a month later, we were charged. When I called up to inquire they were very rude. The guy actually challenged me to a fight! He may have been hit in the head too many times because that's ridiculous. He said that the gyms policy is that cancellations must be in writing. Not a problem at all. The problem is that the girl who worked there didn't tell us that. Otherwise we would have sent an email to cancel. Also, for some weird reason, the guy on the phone kept saying that the gym is family owned. What does family owned have to do with stealing money from members? The gym ended up stealing $125 from me.
