I consider this the last authentically rustic place in Santa Cruz County. That being said, if you are a tourist/not from here, it may not be your speed. This isn't going to be your 'artisanal farm to table quinoa kale bowl' experience. It's more of an Americana diner style. I generally go earlier in the morning when there isn't many people. The servers have always been pleasant: friendly but straight to the point, which works for me. Santa Cruz has changed a lot over the years but Rocky's is a time capsule. Went there last weekend and had the most amazing breakfast per my expectations. I would give Rocky's five stars BUT - super disappointed that they are now serving on paper plates, paper cups, plastic forks, etc. This is not the direction we should be taking for our environment. My husband, mother and I were treated so beautifully. We were in town for a memorial service on 12/12 and need to eat before. We could not have been welcomed more warmly. The two lovely ladies and young man working the front of the house are amazing and they were BUSY. Never missed a beat, through it all steady eye contact and smiles AND of course the food is wonderful, cozy, comfort food. My husband spilled his bloody beer and they insisted on remaking his plate. Who does that? And my mother suffers with Alzheimer's and her repeated trips to the rest room and than forgetting where we were sitting were all handled with genuine compassion. One big gripe: All the tables are set with PLASTIC knives, forks, and spoons. It's unpleasant to eat hot food with plastic utensils, and it's really gross, unsustainable, and destructive to send that much plastic to the landfill every day. This breakfast place is such a great little find in the middle of windy hwy 9. Exceptionally well priced, good atmosphere, and kind people. Me and 8 close girlfriends were in town for a bachelorette part and our waitress, Christina, kept the party rolling. She was funny, accommodating, and honest - which is something I appreciate. Me and another member of our group are highly allergic to gluten, and the menu has amazing gluten-free pancakes (add blue berries or bananas for a fun twist!), something I have come to cherish in non gluten-free friendly world. We drank mimosas, got the scoop on the town, laughed a lot, and left full and happy! I even got to talked to the owner, who told me the cafe is named after his wife's dog! (I love dogs, so I thought it was a highlight). Things to note: cash only, but they have an ATM. This is a real eatery, not a hipster hot spot - just locals enjoying the bacon and coffee. Came here for breakfast and got there in time to find parking! The lot is small and private. It's a small cafe and with our group of 6 we were seated towards the side front of the cafe at a picnic style type of table. It's a private room and there was even an ATM machine in the corner. This cafe is cash only, so be prepared to have some cash on you. I ordered the pancakes short stack with Italian sausage, scrambled eggs and added blueberries to my pancakes. It was super filling but very good. We waited a long time for the food but they were probably backed up from the morning rush. The price was average, probably no more than $10. The service was great and everyone was very nice & welcoming. I will come back if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Had a lovey experience here. Not from the area, was just passing thru checking out Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek! Really wanted some trad breakfast! Opened up Yelp and found Rocky's! It was quite busy although we were sat at a table inside of 5 mins. We were offers child seating (We are 2 with a 9mo old). Our order was taken very quickly and coffee arrived inside of 3 mins after ordering. Refills were prompt! The 2 ladies serving us were very helpful despite being quite busy, they made sure we had everything we needed for our child. I had the 2 eggs breakfast with bacon & Hash browns! I added Avo, everything was served awesome and promptly. Maybe 12-15mins wait, a perfect amount of time for Coffee! The bacon actually was some of the best I've had! While on our way to visit the local redwoods we searched for place to grab breakfast and found Rocky's cafe. It's a charming location. Staff was very friendly. Food was excellent and the gluten free pancakes are awesome. Prices are fair and good portions. Bacon is very good. Everything was cooked perfectly to order. Would recommend for sure. A nice laid back cabin/diner open for lunch and dinner. Very reasonable prices, super friendly service, and solid food. I was torn between a savoury dish (home fries!) and french toast (my favorite sweet brunch food)... the waitress offered to give me two slices of french toast instead of four slices of toast with my omelet. The food was fresh and tasty. House coffee was good, had a bit of that expected burnt diner edge but a little caramely afterwards. It wasn't the best zomg brunch I've had (but then again it's a lot cheaper than say, foreign cinema in SF), but I really enjoyed it and will definitely be back again! What a charming little place! We drove up from Scott's Valley for breakfast a few weeks ago and just LOVED the ambiance of the place. The way the morning sun shines through the panes of windows makes it so comfy to sit and sip your coffee in it's warmth. The bullet holes are a special touch lol Didn't turn me off to it at all! I love mountain charm and this place embodied it. The food was reallly good too! We had the typical breakfast meals, eggs, toast, pancakes, bacon. All perfectly cooked. My husband at the breakfast burrito which he would say was average for breakfast burritos. He's a self-professed breakfast burrito connoisseur so I'd say that is a pretty good rating on his scale. We stopped on a whim for lunch while coming back from a swimming hole up in Boulder Creek. Ordered eggs benny--the hollandaise sauce did not in any fashion taste like hollandaise. No lemon flavor, no sense of a rich egg yolk. It was thin, slightly buttery, and speckled a chili- or paprika-colored spice. I don't know what that was. Overall, we experienced really bland dishes. Loved sitting outside. The coffee was good. The service was excellent. But with lackluster food, we probably won't be back. read more

A great place to go for breakfast. I always go here for brunch and it is consistently delicious. The staff are all very nice and the vibe is perfect. You get that country mountain feel with good food and great service. They are very family friendly; so much so that my toddler inevitably spills and the staff come over with a towel and a smile to help clean up. It's never an issue. 6 of us ate a late breakfast here after wharf to wharf 2019 and the food was just too plain - no character and no seasonings. I poured on salt and pepper just to get flavor from my chewy Benedict plate. House fries under cooked ? What ? The wait staff is great btw - But two fundamental problems with this place - one is the owner just hangs out around the corner from the register with his feet up on a chair and when a customer comes to pay he up and runs over to take your money without even a hello or how are you or a thank you. Geez. Made my stomach turn. Rude and Aloof. After he took my cash only he said "okay" - like you are done. I wanted to throw up on him. What made me write this review is the hostility of the tiny notice on the register counter - "Cash or Check - since 1998" as we were checking out. Yes I am the dip sh-t that does not know their policy - even though they have been doing this cash only thing since 1998 ! "Don't you know that ?" I hate that. So I used the ATM in the employee break room which stated that I would pay 1.99 in fees - only to find out from my bank account that an additional 2.50 was charged. So my total bank fees are $4.49 for a bland rude meal. That's 10 percent of my meal btw - came to $45 clams. No tip, no return customer here, no way. read more

Not only do I give Rocky's Cafe zero stars, but I am deeply offended by the behavior of the owner Mike when I calmly expressed how terribly wrong our experience went. He wouldn't tell me his last name by the way. Where to begin? I ordered a veggie burger. When the food came, I was given a sandwich with avocado, artichokes and spinach on a dry roll. I was told it was the "veggie melt", and they didn't have veggie burgers that day. I was sharing with my 8 year old niece. Not a cup of tea for a little kid. Not to mention, there was no "melty" part to my veggie melt. My sister ordered a turkey sandwich on wheat with a the iceburg side salad, add artichokes, and avo. She was served a sandwich on white, and a leafy green salad without artichokes or avocado. I personally love leafy greens. She had gastric bypass, so can't handle the raw greens. They promptly made my niece a hamurger. She ate half, then gave it to my sister, her mom to pack up to go. When my sister lifted the uneaten half of the hamburger, there was a curly black hair on the plate. The waitress did say she was sorry. My mom paid the entire bill. We were told there were comped items, but there could not have been, based on the price she paid. I thought, "We should not be charged for this meal". Seems like the right thing to do. Or, at least comp most of it. When I spoke to the owner, Mike, he told me that if we ate it, we had to pay for it. He said that nobody told him anything was wrong with the meal, though the server and food runner did know and offered to comp items. I offered to bring him to our table and show him the curly hair and incorrect orders. He refused and told me I wasn't getting anything for free. I let him know I thought that was VERY bad business. At that time, Mike, the OWNER of ROCKY's CAFE told me that there are other options in town, and that I need not come back. I have never written a bad YELP review in my life. Being a server myself, I know things get messed up sometimes. My entire family felt like vomiting when we left. We were so grossed out. Horrible. I have been to Rocky's a couple of times now and will likely make it a staple in my plans for off-thecuff weekend getaways. It's a really good diner serving breakfast staples of eggs and pancakes and fruit and granola and such. The setting is quaint and bright and airy - a big old house with a porch, nestled in the redwoods (of course) right on Highway 9. Maybe it's the pace of life around here (I guess this ain't SF) but allow a little time for your order to arrive and be sure to order carefully if have a special request. When you're stuck in the mountains, you don't have much of a choice of where to go for food. My dad likes this place for breakfast, but the times I've been here, I've found the food to be mediocre. It still satisfies, but it just lacks flavor. I had a cheese and avocado omelette this time around, and I had to add salt and pepper. The cheese was barely there, but the omelette was stuffed full of chunks of avocado, which was kinda nice. The omelette definitely needed more cheese to compensate for the blandness of the avocado though. Hubby didn't enjoy his omelette either. Like I said, the food satisfies, but it just tastes a-ok.
