I live in the town where Rod N Reel is located. This place had been under construction for a while and I have been patiently waiting for it to open. I didn't take any pics of the inside but it's new and really nice. We went on a cold Wednesday night and the dining room was completely empty. Ryan was our server and he was great. He was funny, light and gave honest recommendations when asked. Everything he co-signed on was spot on. The food came out fast and hot. We started off with the char-grilled octopus. The octopus rested on top of a red pepper romesco sauce and fingerling potatoes. The octopus was very tender and very flavorful. Wasn't a huge fan of the romesco, but overall I really enjoyed the dish. For my main I went with the Muscovy duck breast it came sliced and as a chou farci of duck confit, turnip, cider agra dolce. Very good. The cider Agra dolce had a little heat, but nothing over powering. Nice portion and well prepared. For dessert I went with the banana cheesecake. Not a fan, but my boyfriend loved it. To each their own with this one. I was expecting a slice of cheesecake with sliced banana caramelized sauce. The sauce was puréed and reminded me of baby food. Definitely not my favorite. All in all we truly enjoyed our meal and will absolutely be back soon. read more

The brand new remodeled Rod-n-Reel in Chesapeake Beach / North Beach, Maryland is beautiful... but for me has lost all of its former charm and heritage. What used to be a nice family seafood and comfort food menu is completely gone, replaced with a high-priced menu with no real continuity and with no appeal to a regional audience. Perhaps they think fancy boaters will fill up their large restaurant? The quality of the food was pretty good, the service was attentive. However, it It was not very polished service for the type audience they seem to attempting to attract all the way down to little Chesapeake Beach / North Beach. I wish them the best of luck, I really do, but I am not convinced this will succeed. read more

Items forgotten from order, slow bringing things out and didn't seem to be a team atmosphere with the wait staff -- every waitress had to fend for herself. That said, food and ambiance was great. This is a review of the newly renovated and recently opened Rod and Reel restaurant. It looks like most of the other reviews here, with the exception of one is for the old restaurant prior to it undergoing a huge facelift and change of ownership. Had dinner here this past Saturday evening to celebrate a birthday. I really have to say that everything was top-notch. The hostess was friendly when we arrived. Our waitress, Callie, was super friendly and helpful. She was able to make recommendations and give us detailed descriptions of most of the menu items. Manager came over to check on us and make sure everything was to our liking. Everything we ate was really delicious. There wasn't one person in our party of 5 who was not happy with their meal or drinks. The dining room is nicely appointed, but not overdone. We were there in the evening, but could easily tell that the large windows in the dining room provide an excellent view, overlooking the marina and outside of the resort during the day. I could easily see myself coming back here for happy hour, another full dinner or even just for dessert and drinks. Would definitely recommend as this is easily gonna be one of the nicer dining experiences in the twin beaches and north end of Calvert county. read more

We are staying at Rod and Reel for my birthday weekend. We went to the Rod and Reel Restaurant expecting a great seafood dinner. We were disappointed by the limited seafood entrees. We started our meal with a $10 rustic sourdough bread that toasted hard and was not tasty at all. My husband had the potato leek soup which did not really taste like potato nor leeks. I ordered a coke which was flat, told the waiter and he brought me another flat coke. I told him it was my birthday and really wanted to enjoy my dinner. He told me he would give me a complimentary piece of cake. I ordered the crab cakes which the waiter told me that they put something on top to make them spicy. I asked him to ask the kitchen staff to not put the spicy stuff on top. My husband ordered fried flounder. It took quite a while while for us to be served our main meal. Our server was not attentive at all. When we finally received our meal. My husband flounder was so overcooked that he had to search for meat to eat. My crab cakes were spicy throughout. We ended up talking to the manager who tried to make things right. The hotel is nice. The renovations are nice but my birthday dinner was so disappointing I felt like crying. read more

She was excellent; got our order right, never let our glasses go below halfway, and had that hard to fake happiness that makes your dining experience just so much nicer. I ordered The Crab Imperial which had tons of Crabmeat and came with green beans which were just plain beans and mashed potatoes which were the star of the meal. It wasnt the Crab Imperial I grew up on. It was very watery, was good but not $33 good. This was not a bad dinning expieriance, just very middle of the road as I expected more. We stopped by at Rod N Reel after a nice stroll along the North Beach. The location of the restaurant is perfecto -- overlooking a pier nearby, where private boats, beautiful birds, and the Chesapeake bay can be seen. Since it was still phase two of lockdown reopening (hello future generations, the 2020 pandemic was quite something ), only takeouts were available. We ordered Fish N Chips and the Crab cake combo, and were told to wait for ten minutes or so. We took advantage of the waiting time and walked on the small boardwalk to take photos of the beautiful surroundings. Were able to snap photos of families of ducks and swallows，as well as some crane looking birds. Food was ready pretty quickly. We all enjoyed the freshness of the seafood. My crabcake was so chewy and yum! Even the side dishes were not blah like some of the other places. Can't comment on service as we ordered takeout, but generally all the staff we met were friendly and helpful. read more

I haven't been here in approximately 15 years and today reminded of why it was never in my radar to return. It was approximately 6pm on a Sunday and we got off to a really rough start. I wouldn't even blame it on the server Natasha because poor thing seemed to be 1 of 2 servers in the entire establishment with only a handful of tables. They both were definitely in the weeds. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and drink orders were taken but it took over 20 minutes to even get our drinks. I actually had to ask the busboy in passing if it was at all possible for him to at the very least to bring our cocktails to us. He quickly brought them over and sent the other less busy server to take our orders. Another 30 mins passes, by now it's 6:50 and I absolutely had to ask the extremely bubbly host to speak with a manager. As I returned to the table our Mariner's Platter and Rockfish Dinner finally arrived, wasn't bad at all but not sure if it was worth the wait. Becca the manager came soon after with a long explanation of being extremely short staffed due to change in seasons as most servers head for work at outdoor restaurants. Both Becca and Natasha attempted to turn our dining experience around at the end but overall this place is in need of some help. While the outside parking lot is under construction the inside can definitely use a little TLC too. We were sat in a window seat that had an awesome view and you could see & kind of hear the live band outside once you were able to get past all of the gunk and dead mosquitoes in the window seal and pane. A good wipe down and a fresh coat of paint would do wonders. Once dinner was over we went outside to enjoy the live music that's there every weekend on the backside of the restaurant, which was nice. If we were to return anytime soon we would more than likely go for the music only. read more

Back when this place was still one of Maryland's best kept secrets, I could have easily given it 4 stars at the very least. However, as traffic has increased, it seems the establishment has been challenged keeping up with the demand and maintaining the facilities. Therefore, it has slid down to a three star restaurant. The Belgian waffles are still delicious so make sure you try those if and when you go. Don't forget to tip Ron at the waffle station. He is a saving grace for this falling star venue. read more

never again. many many years ago this place was the happening place to be we decided to give it a try since we were in the area never again. the decor of the restaurant sucks the place was not packed but I guess they didnt have staff to cover certain areas of the restaurant we wanted to sit by a window BUT we were told the tables hadnt been cleaned. so we were led to a table that we could kinda see out of a window 10 minutes later a few window booths opened and we asked if we could be moved they moved us but the window area was filled with ants DID I SAY NEVER AGAIN! we didnt ask to be moved again - it seemed like such a hardship to get that booth so we sucked it up. the ants weren't bothering us. Came here on a Sunday before going out on a fishing charter with a group of friends. The service was not very good, the decor inside looks like it has not changed since they opened in '48, and the food was not very good either. They had a weekend buffet spread but we all opted for ordering off of the menu. The service was a little slow but she stayed on top of filling our drinks up. All of our meals were just ok. The burgers were nothing special and a little over cooked, the pickles tasted a bit weird, and the flatbread was just ok. The shrimp salad may have given me food poisoning the entire next day (but to be far I am not positive that was it, though I highly suspect it). Overall, I do not recommend this place besides for the views of the bay. read more

My husband wanted a crab cake for dinner and Rod N Reel had a "Saturday special" of two wings and a crabcake, slaw and chips for $21.00 so we tried it. The wings were actually wingettes (not full wings), the crabcake was a tad bigger than a pool ball, and the chips were actually Lays potatoe chips, not homemade chips. We met friends for a late lunch/early dinner today at the Rod &Reel restaurant in Chesapeake Beach Md.We have been there quite a few times before,and there are usually 8 in our group,and always had a great meal with our wonderful friends,and never had any problems..Today was a different matter,because one of the meals,a steak order,was wrong, consequently it was sent back,and a replacement took over 30 minutes,plus chasing down someone to find out why her meal was still in the kitchen,in the meantime,everyone else in our group had pretty much finished their meal, which left her to eat by herself with everyone else watching her eat,it was very uncomfortable for her to sit there and eat by herself..We dropped over $300.00 for our meal,and when the checks came,there was never a mention about our friends meal screw up,no apology,no discount on her meal,no nothing...We were all very uncomfortable about the whole situation,and how it was handled..We all come from different places, Delaware Virginia and Maryland,and all travel about 75 miles to get there,so you know liked coming there,but in the future we will have to meet our friends in a more customer friendly restaurant.. DO NOT eat here! Place has dead bugs in the windowsills, dirt on the light fixtures and filth coming out of the air vents. Food is subpar and overpriced. Took forever to get food and the drinks were even terrible, specifically the chocolate martini. Our fries and sandwiches were room temp and the crab dip was not even seasoned. Waited ten minutes for them to clear a table when there were plenty already empty. They added an 18% tip automatically even though we were a party of 5 adults, one preteen and two under 5. Thing about the IHOP, Bob Evans, and other local area restaurants, none would have the finer ambience with the Bay view, tablecloths, glassware and intimacy as Rod and Reel Restaurant. Hostess extremely attentive, even found a table close to a wall outlet to run my portable oxygen pump. The coffee was very, very good. The hostess customized a blend that seems popular. My mother had the Seafood Norfolk, which was tasty. Big, tender shrimp and scallops. I think the wine sauce and butter helped. My rockish imperial, was bland. The collard greens were suprisingly tender, a dash of hot sauce would have set them off right. My suggestion, come for a lovely cocktail, admire the view, then have dinner elsewhere. read more

The Rod and Reel will someday be better. They are working on constructing a whole new complex at that location....but in the meantime here is my honest review. I actually really enjoy playing the slots. There are plenty of interesting and fun games with decent payouts. The place is pretty clean and spacious. The crab soup is the worst, and I have tried it twice now. Don't bother. The breakfasts are damn good there, and so are the fish tacos. The drinks are normal casino prices. like 11$ for a White Claw or 9$ for a rail drink. Not the worst. The staff is great. They are friendly, funny, and really kind to the customers no matter how horrible the drunken gamblers losing their mortgages can get. They have the patience of a saint behind that bar, for real! A downside is the smoker's station RIGHT between the doors to enter. There is no way to get into the restaurant or the gaming rooms without passing through a cloud of cigarette smoke. Please move that ashtray elsewhere. Make the smokers get a little workout and not be hanging all over the front porch stinking up the "resort". That really takes away from any classy feel this place could have. I love the pier behind the restaurant. It is stunning in the evening. The faux beach area outside is awesome too. It's a nice place to relax on patio furniture. Outdoor bar in the summer, music on the weekends...it has the potential to be AMAZING and I am sure it eventually will be. read more

Fish was is in no way fresh, and they use what tastes like actual tartar sauce out of a bottle. When I pay $200 for lunch with my wife and daughter, or $500 for that matter, there's an expectation with those prices. And given I've been all over the world....5 or 6 times over, and know a good thing or bad thing when "I'm in it", I know this is as bad as it gets for the price. And you can't say it's just me. There is a reason why this place has a total star rating of just over 2. It is that bad for the price. It is what it is, and not all of us can be wrong. What they should do now is stop being defensive with all these consistently low ratings and ask themselves something...... ''are we going to serve our food in a way that is commensurate with our prices, or not? " It's a simple question. All I know is there is NO WAY they get very much repeat business for those of us in Maryland looking for a day trip. There are tons of restaurants I go back to when I'm in that area because the price, ambience, and quality of the served food warrants it. These guys should be served a warrant to close the place and just make the casino there a little longer and put that eatery out of its misery. Went here for a family dinner (party of 10+) on a Saturday evening. Parking is easy.. they have a newly built garage next to the restaurant, as well as other uncovered parking. We waited for about 15 mins before we were seated. We were sat at three different tables but near each other. Our waitress (Brittany) was not the best - maybe she could have used some extra helped as she was managing our big party plus several other tables. It took forever to get our drinks to the table.. it took forever for her to take our food order (those are primarily my reasons for the rating). I ordered the salmon dinner ($39).. I had the collard greens & mashed potatoes for my sides. The collard greens are amazingggg. The mashed potatoes were very bland (no gravy). The salmon was a SAFE choice. I'd recommend it. Once I received my meal I was pleased with both the presentation and taste; only to then notice that there was a ROACH in my meal. The manager was very accommodating and stated that this wasn't their first incident. It's so unfortunate bc the food was delicious initially, but unfortunately I'll NEVER eat there again.
