The only bbq spot in east bay and possibly the Bay Area that you should be going to. Father and Son owned. Had the bbq chicken, Tri tip, pork ribs, and catfish. The ribs were falling off the bone, and thick pieces as well. Probably the most meat I've ever gotten on an order for ribs. Catfish fantastically cooked, seasoned very well, and able to stand alone without tartar sauce. Chicken very moist and so was the Tri tip. Went with the sides of Mac n cheese, yams, and baked beans all fantastic. And to top it all off! They even have Kool-Aid as a beverage choice, with 4 different flavors to choose from. I was in the mood for some BBQ and had been wanting to try Roderick's for a while, and the stars finally aligned to try them out. I drive by here all the time, and I know this place is small and not really dine-in friendly, so I ordered online to go. Honey ordered the rib plate with yams and baked beans. I ordered the rib and link plate with mac and cheese and potato salad. The online order (DoorDash) status said it would be 25 to 35 minutes before we could pick up our food. Coming from Hayward, that was perfect timing. When I arrived, there was a small line. "Unc" was in the back making plates, and the young lady up front seemed a little overwhelmed, but she was doing her best. Unc came from the back with our plates and asked for the online purchase verification. I thanked him, he told me to have a good day, and I went on my way. The food was good, pricey but good. We spent 66 dollars on the two plates ordering DoorDash. Honey is from Texas, so she's not a big fan of pre-sauced meat; she says it hides the true quality of the meat. The online order form doesn't let you put the sauce on the side. However, the ribs were tender, peeled off the bone easily, and were seasoned just right. The link was great; I don't think you'll find that kind of link in a grocery store. The mac and cheese has a hint of garlic in it, which was surprising in a good way. The yams had the right amount of sweetness to them, not too sugary or overpowered by cinnamon and nutmeg. The beans were good too, just standard baked beans without extras. The potato salad was different; the cut of the potatoes was unique and not too soft. It was good, just not what I'm used to, so I don't think I would order that again. Overall, Roderick's is good BBQ. I would come back, I also want to try their fried cat fish. read more

came here for lunch with a colleague and ordered the tri-tip sandwich combo with a side of collard greens. The tri-tip was okay, but it was pretty chewy and had some fat. The sandwich came with BBQ sauce, but it could have used a lot more to add flavor and moisture. The collard greens were good, but not very juicy and a bit on the dry side. The place itself is nice and has an outdoor patio, which is a great option if you want to eat outside. However, parking is not the greatest and can be a bit inconvenient. Unfortunately, the customer service wasn't great. I wasn't greeted when I came in, and when I left, no one said thank you or acknowledged me--especially noticeable since they thanked other customers as they were leaving. I love barbecue and heard good things about Roderick's so I had to try. I got the BBQ pork ribs that came with two sides...I chose the mac and cheese and collard greens. I also had a mango peach kool-aid. DELICIOUS!!! I thought the rib plate was generous as it came with five bones and were tender with a nice smoky flavor. I had the BBQ sauce on the side and also enjoyed the sauce. The whole meal came to $32. Well worth it:) The gentleman helping me was friendly and the service was good. They had three televisions with various college football games going on so if your favorite team was playing, there's a good chance you'll catch the game there. There's indoor and outdoor seating, too. There's a small parking lot on front that was full but I was able to find parking on the side street next to the gas station. Hubby & I came here for Juneteenth and glad we did. I ordered the catfish, potato salad & greens. He ordered the 3 meats (links, brisket & ribs) and the same sides as mines. Let me tell you, the potato salad was delicious. Alot of BBQ places don't get potato salad right. Something would be missing and it's bland but not Roderick's. The greens were good. All the meats including the fish was It's hard to impress my husband and he said he wants to go back. He really liked it. The verdict is in: we'll be back soon. read more

We didn't get any food, but it looked pretty good. The service well they didn't have enough bartenders the night that we came so the service was terrible but the ambience was really great. There was a fun DJ the vibe was good. It was very difficult. We did about 35 minutes at the bar on a full house to even get a drink, but we were visiting from out of town and yes, we had a great time next time. We'll definitely try the food and we would suggest going back. There's lots of parking at their own private lot. It was easy to find and overall it was pretty fun and friendly. read more

Best barbecue I've had so far in Oakland. Their chicken wings plate is so good, and the sampler plate is my go to.

On yesterday I ordered for the second time from Roderick's. Well I really wanted to support this business but realized the quality of the food is not quite there for me. A friend had of mine had tried the ribs and said they were okay, not horrible. I wanted to be objective so I 'd give it a try. The first order consisted of the catfish, mac n cheese, and baked beans. The portions were adequate the fish tasty, the mac n cheese ok, the beans had a peculiar taste, and if I recall had meat in them. The second order was red snapper, mac n cheese, and the greens. The fish portion was again enough, the mac n cheese not as tasty as the first time. The greens were bland, had quite a number of stems, and appeared to be from the bag. Lastly, ordering from one of the delivery services can be expensive as the cost for my orders were on average about a five dollar mark up from pick up. By the time all was said and done I paid ten dollars more per meal than if I had picked up. I used delivery as I'm on disability and not driving. So for now unfortunately I'll pass on Roderick's. Make sure you eat all of the fish while it's hot no reheating, too tough, dry to eat. This is an update to my original review.2nd update I tossed the majority as it was not edible. read more

I love everything about this place. The people: friendly and warm. The food: immaculate. I had the fried catfish plate with greens and yams. The greens were perfectly seasoned and tender. The yams were the perfect amount of sweet with notes of cinnamon and warm spices. The catfish pieces were meaty, fried hard, and seasoned to perfection. My plate was loaded up with 8 (!!!) pieces of catfish and a generous amount of sides, plus some soft and fluffy dinner rolls. I will be back probably way too many times. read more

My 1st time today the owner and his son are wonderful people. I got the sampler plate, loved the tri tip, ribs, and links. I was shocked the chicken was so tender and marinated well, most BBQ spots I don't order chicken because it's too dry. I got the greens and potato salad, mac and cheese. Wow!!! Service is super friendly. For lunch I got the Tri tip sandwich with a side of yams. The Tri tip was cooked to perfection and placed on a hearty bun. It was delicious. Their sweet BBQ Sauce is standout and I will be stopping by to pick up a few bottles to use at home. And although I was impressed by the Tri Tip Sandwich the Yams are out of this world!!! Summary: Food was good, not great. I will give it another shot. I am currently in a credential program for Diversity in Leadership Institute at Bishop O'Dowd on Saturdays. We get about an hour to eat and this is LITERALLY right down the street. I ordered for pick up to maximum time. Upon arrival, food was ready with utensils and still warm even 10 minutes after initial time. Parking was plentiful but challenging to navigate as their food truck is blocking a section of the lot and signage isn't helpful. The inside was narrow but had a couple seats. The staff were pleasant and attentive. They pack in the meat which was great. Ribs and Tri Tip were both well seasoned, but drenched with bbq sauce which, for me, takes away from the craftsmanship of the BBQ. Mac and Cheese was solid but not creamy or cheesy. This place is usually closed when I drive by, but I had a chance to visit on a Saturday. OMG, a real BBQ place. I ordered the Chicken & Ribs Combo Dinner Meal, with Collard Greens and Baked Beans for sides. Very generous servings! Also, got two rolls and lots of napkins. No complaints about the sides. The BBQ Chicken was boneless dark meat. Absolutely perfectly cooked chicken. Moist and tender. If I only ordered BBQ Chicken, this would be a 5-star review. However, the BBQ Ribs were dry and tough. All the sauce in the world can't fix overcooked BBQ ribs. Sadly, I couldn't chew it and had to toss half of it away.
