Meh. We have a soft spot for Rode's because we had our baby shower in their barn. (a VERY interesting situation. You should read my review on THAT. oooh weee.) So, now that our daughter is 5, and we were in the area, we decided to swing back and show her where she was whilst still in utero. We enter and are immediately sat by a very nice young lady. Side note, for the single fellas out there, Rode's IS pretty much bringing the eye candy across the board, so there's that at least. Our waitress comes over and takes our orders, with a polite, but not quite FRIENDLY energy. Yuengling fish and chips for your boy, the baked mac and 5 cheese small plate for the Misses, and a regular mac and cheese for the little one. (Side note number two: I asked the waitress if the mac and cheeses were the same, since we would have just let the L.O. pick at mommy's plate, but she said "no. absolutely not." Spoiler alert, they are the same damn mac and cheese. One just has a TOPPING of like bacon and scallions. Literally the exact same mac and cheese.) Food comes out, and it's......ok. Nothing to write home about, but nothing terrible either. The L.O. seemed to really like her mac and cheese, so points there. My fish and chips was cooked well, but needed the tarter sauce to bring any real flavor to the dish. The "chips" were nice, even though it was like 4 potato wedges. The restaurant itself reads small. It feels JUST a little tight inside, with the lighting JUST a little dark. There is a much more open, much more bright dining room part, but I guess we were a little too early for that, as we were sat in the bar dining area. Still, nothing unpleasant. Overall, just a very static, normal dining experience. Nothing fantastic, but nothing wrong either. I wouldn't AVOID Rode's, but I certainly wouldn't travel for it. We are in the area quite often for other reasons, so maybe we'll stop in again, but again, I'm not going out of my way. read more

I really like the food at this place, but every single time that I go, it is freezing cold in the restaurant and also the food comes out cold! We have not dined in here for years. During the last two years we have ordered takeout and it has always been good. The happy hour menu lured us in on a Saturday early evening about 4 pm. We started with one martini on the HH menu and one on the regular menu. First we ordered calamari --this was perfect. Although the hot Cherry pepper cause was a kickin' especially when you got a seed! It was a nice change from red marinara. This was on the HH menu. Next- crab bisque, a standard long time Rode's favorite of mine. Didn't disappoint. Ordered bacon wrapped shrimp, this was the downfall of the meal, dry and a smidge over cooked. Should've passed and went for the wings Also had the fig jam & blue burger with the homemade chips. Omg so delicious. Their burgers are always good. Great service, gross food. - wings: not crispy, very oily and oil tasting. Asked for more sauce and it was just hot sauce, not wing sauce. Somehow the wings were still overcooked despite not being crispy. No options for coated wings. They were also way overpriced for a 10 piece with no option for a 5 piece. - burgers: both my burger and my wife's burger were overcooked. Flavor was pretty meh. Glad I got the BBQ on the side as it was 90% molasses. Completely unbalanced and basically inedible. - fries: my wife said the fries were ok - house chips: chips were good. Too bad I didn't have anything decent to dip them in. - service: our server was very attentive and very apologetic about the gross burgers. I didn't have to ask. She took mine off the bill after I said I did it want it. I only had a bite or two and left it behind. - ambiance: they advertise their fireplaces and neither of them were lit in the dead of winter. Pretty disappointing. We tried this place during Covid a couple years back and had a pretty bad experience this time. I don't think I'll be back. The food just isn't good. read more

We came here for date night a few nights ago. Our server was very friendly. We started with their cornbread which was okay but broke apart very easily. They also gave us a basket of rolls which was nice esp since a lot of restaurants (ex - Botto's down the street) stopped doing that. Hostess and waiter were nice, food was awful. Son ordered filet and it was not edible. It was overcooked and dry. Didn't even taste like filet. Fish and vegetables had little seasoning and taste. Substituted a baked potato in place of mashed potato due to an allergy and was told later we would be charged. Very disappointing...will not be returning. Had dinner here with 2 friends who have never been to Rodes before. Our friends ordered short ribs and fish and chips, we both got the chicken francaise. Our chicken was very good and tasty even though the portions was very small(1 small pounded out chicken breast) Our friends on the other hand were very polite and said they enjoyed their meals but ate very little of it. When the fish and chips came she remarked is this chicken, the fish was dark brown and overcooked to the point that it was very hard. The short ribs basically looked like pot roast on top of some mashed potatoes with a very dark brown sauce and no vegetables. It sounded great, but the stuffing inside was cold. The waitress took it back and ensured they would make me a new one. They didn't, they just put it in the microwave. We went weeknight about 7:30. Listened to what they were out of, discovered they were out of more when the meals arrived with substitutions. Meals took 45 minutes to serve. Table bread came after appetizers. Soft drinks needed a reminder. My swordfish arrived well overcooked to tasteless, rice had clearly been on a steam table since lunch. Should have gotten a salad so I wouldn't leave hungry. Years ago my boss would take me here for lunch or an occasional dinner. Always a good meal then. My $17 chicken was tough, and I'm surprised it was a "half chicken." The pomegranate was my meal savior. Second: I know our server didn't like us. I know this because when my 84-year-old grandmother announced in her 84-year-old way that she "didn't like the rice pilaf," the server rolled her eyes walking away. GIrl, I saw you do that. My dad and I pitstopped here on our way up to NY. Great choice! Everyone from the hostess to our waitress was very friendly as soon as we entered the restaurant. Located right off the road with parking lot. It wasn't very crowded. Most people were watching sports around the bar. Very rustic and dimly lit ambiance. I got the seafood scampi and my dad got the chicken Parmesan. I loved the abundance of seafood in my dish. Most restaurants skimp you when it comes to seafood but not here! Wait Staff and setting were outstanding. Food not so much. I ordered the fish and chips thinking from the description I would be getting Yeungling beer battered "traditional" fish and chips. Their idea of fish and chips is little square cakes of cod coated with some type of tasteless grainy bread crumbs and baked instead of deep fried. I've had my chances eating the burger at the Cheesecake Factory and Bar Louie. This beyond burger is beyond them... My companions and I had an enjoyable dinner at Rode's this evening. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server Nicole quickly introduced herself and brought our beverages. One companion ordered the pork chop, the other the crab cake and shrimp, and I ordered the honey sesame glazed salmon. All of our dishes were served fairly quickly and were very warm. Wow. What an epic fail. Last week we had a great meal. This week, not even comparable. Every single thing we tried was worse than last week. The onion soup was watery and bland. The cocktails barely drinkable. I ordered an old fashioned that the bartender defended by saying she used club soda and sugar packs like normal. Neither shows on the easily google able revile. I've been here twice recently for my brother's wedding and rehearsal dinner. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere. Perfect lighting and decor for a slightly upscale dinner. The menu is a little above average price for fine dining. They have a specialty in bbq, which looked/smelled great and is tasty from what I've heard (I'm vegan, fyi). I love their house salad and homemade Italian dressing! I'm a salad lover and found it perfect. I got plain penne and marinara as an entree and it was nothing special. The pasta was cooked waaaay past al dente and the marinara was very sweet. The staff had been helpful and very friendly for the most part in terms of managers and waitstaff, but the event coordinator for the barn (Alyssa) seems extremely disorganized from my second hand experience. So if you're booking an event at the barn, be prepared to be adaptable and patient. read more

There are not a lot of options for restaurants in this part of Nowheresville. Culinary adventurousness is not usually rewarded by us locals, so you sort of have to temper your expectations when you come out. That being said, Rode's does a nice job of delivering a quality restaurant experience with some interesting combinations and lots of expected dishes delivered well. I particularly enjoy the work they have done on expanding, updating, and improving the interior (and especially the bathrooms) with their latest remodel. To start with, this restaurant started out many years ago as a bar. Therefore, the bar dominates the central dining room. The wings they have at Rode's are among my Top 10 wings across the country. They have a delicious teriyaki glaze, but I usually just got them dry with the sauce on the side. Their entrees are also delicious. Last night, I had the Chilean Sea Bass with pineapple salsa. Although the rice was a little boring, the Sea Bass was on point and the seasonal asparagus was steamed to just the right crunch. My wife had the Sonoma chicken sandwich, which I have also had before and is an interesting combination of chicken, cheese, and asparagus. My son had the mac and cheese appetizer - so often mac and cheese can be boring, but this had an interesting combination of 5 cheeses with a little bite (maybe dry mustard?) and just enough bacon to add flavor but not enough to overpower. My other son had an open faced turkey sandwich and the portion was big enough that it probably could have served the whole table. As usual, the food was a little slow to come out of the kitchen so you definitely need to set aside some extra time when you are visiting this restaurant because they are not known for their speed. However, the service was attentive and friendly and our drinks stayed refilled, which was nice. The manager also stopped by the table to make sure everything was A-OK. I worked in the Logan area from 07 - 09, and eventually moved into the area in 2018, so i'm familiar with Rode's, but had never been there until this weekend. I've always heard they had great food and a homey atmosphere. I finally took my family (wife and 2 young kids) to Rode's for dinner on Saturday. I didn't expect a crowd since it was a nice day and the "shore crowd" was not going to be holding up the lines, so we were seated in 5 minutes. The outside is nice and clean with a patio seating area and ample parking. Inside, the design is reminiscent of an upscale farmhouse with a lot of wood and stone as well as being very neat and clean. Always a big plus when there isn't carpet in a restaurant, carpet is gross. I expected diner type food based on some of the reviews i've seen elsewhere but was pleasantly surprised with their offerings. My family and I went dressed like we were headed to the diner, however and stuck out like a sore thumb. Word to the wise, don't look like you rolled out of bed. They won't say anything, but, ya know, you may feel a little odd. The selection of beers was fantastic with great prices. Started with a mass produced light beer ($4) to kick it off, and followed up with a recommendation for a relatively uncommon seasonal microbrew beer for only (Evil Genius Pineapple Hefeweizen - $6). Ive had similar beers elsewhere for close to $8-10. The kids wound up ordering chicken fingers which did not appear to be frozen re-heats but freshly breaded and fried, I had the Beyond Burger based on another review and it was really good (though for obvious reasons the veggie burgers are pre-made), my wife had a salad. We enjoyed everything we had and felt the pricing was fair for what we had. The service was great with our server coming back often to check on us, refill drinks, make beer recommendations, etc. Our food took no more than 10-12 minutes to come out and everything was hot. No major negatives here, just minor. Only reasoning for 4/5 is as follows: *My childs high chair was broken. The latch would not snap into place. This would have been no big deal, but i'm starting to see a trend in restaurants treating child seating like an after thought, and its a safety issue. Either you accept kids or not, and if you do, please ensure the items you provide are properly functional. When I first moved into the area I would stop or pick up from Rode's 2-3 times a month. As the area evolved so did restaurant options. So that said it's been awhile (several years) since my last visit. They gave the entrance s much need face lift and added outside seating. The bar is still the main attraction but they've done a nice job with sprucing the place up. The food is good but I've had much better for the cost. To be honest I probably would have past this place by (again) had it not been for a gift certificate recently given to us. I kept it safe by trying a crab cake and fried shrimp combo with FF and coleslaw. My fries were wimpy and cold and my shrimp were all stuck together. My wife had thier seafood over pasta which included huge scallops, shrimp and nice chunks of crabmeat. Their portions are very big and you will surely get your full. The highlight of the meal was the Tuna tar tar as a appetizer, fresh and well presented. I must admit they were crowded and have been a staple in the area of Swedesboro for many many years so they must be loved. Service was pleasant and well attentive. read more

My family and I had lunch at Rode's for the first time today ... and I do NOT recommend eating there if you have food allergies. Our server was fine, the decor was okay (sort of "country"), and my Waldorf salad was okay. However, I DO NOT recommend going to Rode's if you have food allergies or are on any kind of medical diet where you cannot eat specific foods. I have an anaphylactic food allergy and my mom is on a medical diet, which means that we cannot eat certain foods, period. We are super careful when ordering, and we aren't the type of people who ask for special allowances - we find things on the menu that we can eat and just verify that the foods we are allergic to won't come into contact with our food. I don't know if the service staff aren't knowledgeable about their menu items or if they are trained to essentially lie about what is in their food, but what my mom ordered from the menu was not what she received, and it was an issue per her diet. Instead of being gracious about the issue, the service staff doubled down that what was on her plate wasn't what it looked like. Here's the deal - if someone tells you that they cannot eat a specific food, don't serve it to them. If they are ordering something that contains that food, tell them. My parents and I aren't rude or difficult customers. My mom would have gladly had a different meal. What could have been easily fixed turned into a big issue. Never once did the manager come to our table or did the server offer to take her food back. Had that food come to me, I'd be in the hospital, possibly dead. I mean, honestly, if you own a restaurant, don't lie about what you are serving. I doubt we will do back. I cannot eat at restaurants that aren't forthcoming about what they serve their customers. read more
