Loved our time at The Red Hen as our weekly date night this time around. The Red Hen is interesting that you can order from them or the establishment that's attached to them which is named BLK SHP, a tapas bar. Little for everyone to choose from on their large menus. Inside is beautiful and there's a jukebox to play music of your own liking. Wait staff is great and checked back multiple times to see if we needed anything. Drinks were great with chips of ice in the martini, she loves that. App we chose was a fun named Buffalo Chicken Tater Kegs not too spicy but very creamy inside. My pizza was absolutely delicious and will be why we come back. LOADED with toppings and all great flavors. My fiancé got the chicken burger and it came with 2 big fried crispy chicken breast. Juicy and packed with its chipotle flavor. We will be back for sure. Swedesboro area has some contenders for sure! read more

I got a garbanzo bean salad and it said it came with lemon vinaigrette but it was honestly soup. Don't know if they gave it a shower or something. Then we got a Pizookie. Wow. The pizookie came out and looked well fine. Then my friends started digging in and we found out it was raw. Salmonella.HELLO!!! Also gotta say the plate they put it on was not okay. It was like a pizza dish and it should have had edges or something because it kept dripping over the edge. Like has this never happened before?! After hearing about the famous freak shakes, I decided to take my kids here. We ended up arriving right after the town's Christmas parade so the place was packed. The staff did a great job at moving the tables and getting in as many people as they could, the large crowd did not slow down the service. There were 4 freak shakes to pick from, each outlined with details and a photo in a special freak shake binder. We went with the mint, birthday, and chocolate shakes. They were beautifully messy. We had just finished at Blk Shp and the bourbon pecan bread pudding was calling to us from The Red Hen so we closed out next door and walked on over. The place looked like a cute diner. It was empty. A nice young man came to take our order. When the bourbon pecan bread pudding came we were a little confused. It didn't look like bread pudding. It didn't taste like bread pudding and there was no bourbon flavor at all. It was like they took King's Hawaiian Bread, tore it up, and lined a dish with it. They then tossed some pecans on it, covered it with a sweet sauce, and plopped a scoop of ice cream on top. I appreciate strange and creative food but it has to taste good and be worth the cost. This was definitely not worth the money. It wasn't a satisfying dessert in any way, shape, or form. We tried the bread in the sauce, ate the ice cream, and left the rest. read more

If you're in town and you want a relaxed fun spot with comfort food and easy parking, this is your stop! The fries with short ribs were phenomenal and addictive. I wouldn't recommend going for anything out of the mainstream- my gyro was super bland, processed greasy filets of lamb, super chunky cucumber, no dill or salt in the tzatziki. I felt it was a brave choice on the menu since they seem pretty American focused so I took the challenge- and was disappointed. The calamari was also super rubbery. But the other basics were solid and service was very consistent. The bathrooms were nearly perfect and clean. It's nice to have a spot in little towns to try. Wow. We have not been here since March 2020. We are locals, the last time we went was for my sons 4th birthday- now almost 7 he still remembers that freak shake! We pass by often and went in on a Wednesday evening about 6pm. A few families, adult dinners and some young loves on a date night! We both had a beer & margarita. No apps, we had our youngest who is nearly 2, so we didn't want to make it a longer meal. B: chicken burger & fries. Aka fried chicken sandwich with a good sauce. I don't know why I was completely surprised by The Red Hen. Based on the area and the outside aesthetic, I was expecting a trendy little hipster spot, not an absolute dive bar with ratty picnic table cloths and mismatching silverware. Anywho, we enter and sit down at our slightly dilapidated booth, and get our orders going. Kids mac and cheese for the little one, with an apple juice; a cubano sandwich and fries, with an 8oz cider for me, and an appetizer portion of crab mac and cheese, with a raspberry tea for the Misses. FIRST, the kids apple juice was almost FOUR. DOLLARS. For a CHILDS SIZE apple juice! Insanity. Secondly, the mac and cheese wasn't terrible, like most kids mac and cheeses are at places like this, but it was positively unseasoned. I went to TOWN with the salt shaker on this dish, but the dish was just like actively deflecting taste. My wife was even like, "yo....my guy.....how much salt are you going to put in that?!," but I just COULD NOT move the taste from "nothing" to "bland." My daughter ate ONE bite and was over it. She instead went in on her fries, which looked old. MY meal was slightly better. The sandwich was a little small for $15, and they, infuriatingly, upcharge for fries (it's chips otherwise), but the sandwich was tasty, and MY fries were hot and fresh. No idea why my daughters fries looked so different. MY drink was embarrassingly expensive as well. Again, a pretty small 8oz pour of cider was almost $10. (OH! They are also one of those annoying "happy hour is only at the bar" places. *eye roll emoji*) The Misses *appetizer* mac and cheese was enough to feed two people, which probably explains the $15 price tag for that as well. It was "meh"-ly received, and the tea got horrible reviews. We were told that the Tiramisu was "the best I've ever had," and didn't skimp on the marscapone, etc, but I was underwhelmed, and was done after a spoonful. The Misses seemed to enjoy it a little more. While we were in the dining room part, there was just a parade of large families, with multiple kids coming in, so maybe sit in the bar area if you aren't big on children. The food was less than desirable and we left what we did not bother eating. Was wondering if the "chef" had had much culinary schooling. We had shrimp tacos and pizzas. The menu is a tad confusing as we ordered crab fries and thought they were different than French fries with crab pieces on them along with a delectable cheese sauce. So we had that and I also ordered old Bay Fries because again--thought crab fries were more crab forward. The vegan pizza was plain but tasty. Service was slow when we were seated then picked up. We have been coming here for a few years. The food is delicious. Sweet potato fries here are awesome and I love their baklava. What we especially love is the beer selection. They typically curate a great rotating tap of varying ipas not typically found in the area. The ambiance is fun and we've never had any complaints about the service. This place is a small little gem found on Kings Highway. It's crazy looking atmosphere is actually very welcoming and their food is absolutely to die for! The reasons why I'm giving this place a three out of five is that is a little bit too pricey. I get that it's a small independent restaurant, but the food could come down just a little bit in price. Not to mention, our server was very few and far out when attending to our table. The place was absolutely dead for being a Saturday lunch. When even paying the bill at the end, he took the server almost 15 minutes to come back with the receipt to sign and my card. But let's get down to the start of the show, the food. For appetizers I had the garlic cheese bread, and my wife had a bowl of the butternut squash soup. Which was their seasonal soup for the time. Those were very flavorful and the temperature was absolutely outstanding. For our main courses, we had the mussels and spaghetti and the Sunday fried chicken sandwich and with the garlic cheese fries. Once again, out of this world. So I guess I can say the real MVPs of this restaurant are the chefs themselves. I am hoping to return one day back to this restaurant. Hopefully I can get a that does not disappear on me! Everyone is hurting for employees right now, so it seems unfair to mark them down for service--but service was pretty poor. Slow and inattentive. Presentation was awful. We waited forty five minutes for a lousy cheeseburger and cheese steak with fries. I asked for a manager.She came out.I could smell the alcohol on her breath.She was drunk. I came in here after yoga to have an appetizer & two glasses of red wine. I live down the street and have visited this establishment sporadically for 5 years with both my friends and family. I later ordered a burger to-go for my husband. I was overcharged for an additional glass of wine and also additional toppings for the burger. I left a $10 tip but the "Bar manager" identified my To-go ticket as such (see photo). I was in the restaurant business for 15 years. I paid $70 to be insulted. After a day of shopping we popped into The Red Hen, what a great spot. Alec, our waiter was pure joy and very attentive during our stay and full of personality. So, why did the Swedesboro chicken cross the road? My guess is that it didn't want to sort coffee beans at The Red Hen any longer. Our lasting impression of this quaint, nicely decorated Main Street eatery on Swedesboro's Main Street has to be the coffee. And, we are not talking about some deep undertones of carefully taste crafted roasting of high quality beans. In fact, we are talking about some plain ordinary nearly Maxwell House coffee that ala carte costs THREE DOLLARS and TWENTY FIVE CENTS!!! Ok, so unlike the STAR-TAKE YOUR BUCKS place you are allowed refills but nearly two hours after lunch its the coffee price that will remain the lasting memory of this Sunday breakfast. In fact, the price of coffee almost pulled the raising down to a two except ... So after thinking about it ... they must use hens to sort through a pile of coffee beans searching for the best organic beans to roast. The extra time and the training of the hens is then added to the coffee costs! The young ladies working at THE PRICEY COFFEE JOINT oops, The Red Hen, were true superstars of friendliness. Other reviews confirm that someone is teaching the wait staff the proper way to take care of customers. We felt very welcome and nicely cared for during breakfast. Nice weather provides the option of dining al fresco which allows diners to take in the ongoing traffic in this historic town. The outdoor seating is set up in an attractive manner but we opted for eating in and diners are treated to a blend of country with modern that is very comforting (Until you receive the bill for your coffee ... I haven't forgotten how much I paid for it.). Here's the good breakfast and coffee news. Most breakfasts include coffee, which is an immediate savings of THREE DOLLARS and TWENTY FIVE CENTS!! My Home Fry Casserole was one such combination but the Breakfast Burrito required the ala carte coffee purchase adding $3.25 to the bill for coffee!!! Here's the good, the bad, and the ugly of the breakfast choices: The Breakfast Burrito was totally stuffed with good tasting foods ... it was overflowing with yummyness!! Definitely worth a repeat with a glass of water as the beverage of choice. Now the accompanying home fries ... well the taste was spot on, the crispness was there but they were barely luke warm when one would have much preferred hot. The Home Fry Casserole is eye pleasing when it is delivered and it was nice and hot! I truly enjoyed that the homefries under the eggs were heavy on the fried onions. As I reached the bottom of the cast iron serving pan I discovered my bacon minus that crisp edge that most of us like from bacon. This bacon was well ... soft on the edges and in the middle. It appears that the chef first cooks the bacon in the cast iron pan adding bacon drippings to the home fries to make them extra yummy but I think crispness would have made the bacon a nice contributor to the dish but it tasted and texturally felt almost like an after thought whose disappearance from the casserole would have been a plus rather than a minus one would assume occurs any time there isn't bacon in a dish. Now I need to say everything one needed to add to breakfast was there on the table ... well there was no jam nor jelly until we asked for some and then a 3/4 empty stacker of jellies and jams was brought to the table. However, seeing a collection of butter pats was a sign to me that DRY TOAST was heading my way. I do not get DRY TOAST. I never order DRY TOAST. And, I never order COLD DRY TOAST but that is what was delivered to me, which meant that the butter was going to be spread on crusty cold bread rather than melting into just out of the toaster toast. Yes, I understand some people like DRY TOAST ... so let them request it and serve it to them but by not immediately buttering toast after heating it to crispiness defeats the rewards that come from butter plus butter somehow allows warmth to remain in the toast while it sits to be delivered to a dining consumer that DRY TOAST fails to do. So, the RED HEN has appeal that will require another venture into its welcoming arms but skipping the ala carte $3.25 coffee next time. The service saved the rating from becoming just two stars for the aforementioned reasons. ONe side note to a previous extensive review. Yes, there is a large gravel lot to the side of the restaurant that one enters with self risk but the restaurant has a nicely paved parking lot of its own plus street parking is plentiful. Those seeking accessible parking need only drive to the rear of the restaurant and it appears that there is an accessible entrance there (No, we didn't investigate it closely but we had read the review and were pleasantly surprised to see the paved lot. As for us ... we are gliding across the gravel.). read more

This place is interesting. I've tried the sister restaurant (Blk Shp) and it was pretty good. The Red Hen was a second option since we were at Hill Creek Farms and they were so busy we couldn't get a table to eat. We came at lunch time and it was dead at 12pm on a Saturday aside from 3 gentlemen standing at the bar. We got a table near the bar for the tv's that seemed to barely work. So we ordered drinks and had some great beer and tequila drinks but they look 15 mins to get to the table. Odd since the place was basically empty. Anyway we ordered food and that seemed to take just as long as the drinks but the food was good or we were starving. I would just say the food fine but don't come here if you're looking for a quick bite to eat. read more

Took the family for a local dinner at the red hen which is 5 minutes from our house. The food was really good my wife and I got burgers. And my kids ordered the kids pasta and said it was the best pastas they ever had. The Red Hen was accommodating with where we wanted to sit. I also noted how well they were at cleaning up after a table has left. The table next to us had a few children who made a decent mess. Food all over the floor on the seat the table looked like a bomb went off and next thing I know it's spotless and looks like it never happened. Overall I thinks it's a solid 3 you get good service good food in a clean family friendly environment. The food is slightly better than diner food. Also had 1 issue. So the Red hen and the black sheep are the same business. But you can order from either place no matter where you sit. We had a gift card and it had the black sheep logo on it. Since the buildings are connected like you can go from ether restaurant from the inside I assumed it didn't matter where we sat or what we ordered since the money for the food goes to the same business. Well I was wrong of course we didn't order anything from the black sheep so they didn't take the gift card. Well color me Red Hen! How cool is this place? The first time I walked in I thought wow! Farmhouse meets industrial-chic with a splash of junk art. OK, maybe more than a splash because there's not just one, but two unique and brightly colored junk art chandeliers hanging over the main dining room. It's one of those moments where you're like dang, who knew junk could be so cool! Anyway...moving along...they've got an adorable rustic general store that primarily sells really cute things for babies and kids. Back-treading to the front, I love the little vintage red stove repurposed as a front desk/work station. The industrial aluminum arm chairs/modern plastic chairs and cool light fixtures throughout all add to the overall décor and atmosphere. Ok! So let's get on to the food! Me and my hubby both ordered the chicken, bacon and avocado panini sandwich. It wasn't really that busy and took much longer than we anticipated to get our food, but our awesome server Taylor made all the difference...she was always friendly, attentive and checked in on us regularly! Went for the first time and I won't be back. Place was empty with only one other table inside and one table outside with customers. Waiter came over pretty quickly a handful of times but we weren't ready. Burgers seemed to take a long time to come out and when getting the food it was fresh and hot but I felt there could have been more fries and I thought my burger was salty. The prices seemed high to me; $44 for three burgers plus tip. This was also the first time I have ever seen a restaurant explicitly state a credit card fee is charged due to Covid; we paid cash. A bin for dirty dishes was left on the floor the whole time we were there while staff were by the bar being loud with each other. We live around the corner and have been coming here since they changed from Old Swedes Inn to Red Hen and the tapas place. I have to say, it's much better to eat there than get take away. Any time I have gotten it from delivery, the order isn't 100% correct and the food is cold. Dining in is way better! They always have a vegan option that's really good and my kids like the burgers and sandwiches a lot. The fried calamari is excellent and not at all chewy and the drinks are always great. We also can't say enough about the desserts and ice cream! It's a casual atmosphere so you don't have to dress a certain way and the staff is super nice and helpful. Just got here, atmosphere is cute. Grandson ordered pretzels and he stated they were good. I started with ice tea, there was actually no tea in it.. Tasted like water with lemon. Have to say waitress said it was weak, that was an understatement. Cheese burger and American Burger were dry, Iwe both ordered medium more like well. Falafel was dry no flavor. Taski sauce had no flavor. Linguine with Alfredo sauce was good. On the whole it wouldn't be a repeat. I think this was more of a bar that offered food. Service was ok read more
