The photos posted online for this place on hotels.com and AAA are a lie! They look WAYYY CLEANER and are stolen from the Arbor Inn. I booked a smoke free room and a queen sized bed. My husband and I walked into the lobby to check in and everything in there felt sticky. There was also a sign that said the WHOLE Inn allowed smoking on the inside. My husband had to literally slam his body into the door to get it to open. The smoke smell was so intense I had a migraine within five minutes. The bed was a trendle bed and both my husband and I are big people, I put half my leg on the bed and it sank to the floor (don't worry I washed my clothes right after). The box spring was still covered in plastic. They judged me for reading what I was signing. The wifi came with a warning saying the page wasn't safe. There was also a cigarette in the AC unit. There was also cigarette marks on each piece of furniture and the shower had mold. I talked to my agent to cancel my stay here immediately. I had to pay for the first night which I understand from a business perspective. The second entrance to our room to grab our stuff, the owner had sprayed perfume to cover the smell. He also followed my husband into the room to beg us to stay and tried to put us in his "sister" hotel across the street. We didn't even bother. He pestered us for a while to beg us to stay but nah. I've stayed in shitty places before and I have my 2 requirements smoke free and big bed. This lied about both and I didn't trust the attendant to show us something we would like. This was an awful place to stay. It was dirty. The bedding was very thin and cheap, terrible mattress too! The bathtub was grungy. I didn't even want to touch the blow dryer because it was so filthy. The guy at the desk never smiled. And they charge $0.25 for very little ice, about two handfuls... They don't offer anything for breakfast, not even coffee in the lobby! When asked about fresh coffee they said use the little Keurig in your room. As dirty as everything was I wasn't about to use that little coffee maker! I just checked into this motel after a long and tiring day of driving and it will definitely be my last. Upon checking in, I was polite and friendly as I can be. You're not allowed to enter the office but you have to go around the corner to a dirty, somewhat sketchy window with plexi glass. I rang the bell for service and a young woman appeared, she had an expression on her face as if I was interrupting something. I told her I was checking in and she rolled her eyes and walked away and came back a moment later and said in a sharp tone, "I need to see your credit card and your id." I slipped both cards through the window and she was gone for nearly ten minutes, just leaving me hanging outside standing in front of the window. She finally returns with a form I needed to sign. She said she needed two initials, a signature and my license plate number in which she just hand drew a line for me to put my license number. I accidentally put my license number where I was supposed to sign and as I was writing she literally snapped at me in a very rude, annoyed tone, "NO! YOUR SIGNATURE GOES THERE!" I was so put off and pissed by her attitude after this that I crossed the license number out and signed my name and slipped the form under the cracked window. She looked so annoyed and just handed me my room keys and told me my room number. No thank you, no enjoy your stay, no sorry to keep you waiting, just super rude unprofessionalism. As I walked away some man then came out of the office and stood there and watched me as I unloaded my car, it was very creepy and unsettling. Needless to say, out of all the hotels I've stayed at in Monterey over the last ten years, this one was terrible largely due to how nasty the staff are. It may be affordable but believe me it's not worth it. As a paying customer, people deserve far more courtesy and respect than that. In addition, the walls are paper thin, I heard a couple verbally fighting in the room next to me and the guests above me were stomping so loud when they walked that you could hear their every step above my head while trying to sleep. Also, tons of hair was found in my bathroom. FYI there is NO BREAKFAST! Don't let the website amenities fool you, there's a note stating it's "restricted" at the plexiglass window haha. For such dump of a motel, there sure is a lot of rigid rules. In my closing, I'll never return here again, I suggest going down the street to the fireplace inn or another place that actually appreciate your business and make you feel welcome to be there. Save yourself and do not book a room here! Sleeping in your car would be 100 times better, if you can get some sleep... Unfortunately we made the mistake of not checking the reviews before booking this nightmare. Although it was only 90 dollars for the night, if I had known how horrible this place was I wouldn't have let them pay me the 90 dollars to stay. The room smelled so bad of cigarettes even though it was a non smoking room and when we tried to open a window for fresh air the windows had no screens so now we have let in a bunch of flies while trying to get the smoke smell out. The room looked like it hasn't been cleaned in a very long time, the floors were not vacuumed there was someones disgusting old shoes left in a cabinet, old food left in the molded fridge and the walls looked like someone sprayed body fluids all over them with a super soaker. The shower was full of mold and the towels smelled like they haven't been washed.. EVER!! If that wasn't bad enough when I pulled down the bedding because we were not going to sleep in those sheets, I found a pack of cigarettes, a lipstick, a filthy sock and burnt spoon all in the sheets...oh and about 20-30 long black hairs all throughout the bed..I want to puke just leaving this review..obviously those sheet had not been changed prior to our arrival. I was so disgusted I literally was in tears but since it was already 2am and my husband was exhausted from driving he talked me into staying till morning so we can at least get a little rest..ummm yeah right the couple in the room next to us were screaming and yelling all night im pretty sure he was her pimp and the room above us sounded like they were bowling up there. I couldn't take it any more so decided to go sleep in my car which wasn't my brightest idea apparently because after pulling my seat back and closing my eyes wishing it was morning already I hear a knock on my car window, I sit up thinking it must be my husband right?!? ZERO STARS. ZERO STARS. Warning to all!! This place should and will be soon shut down for any number of very serious building code violations we witnessed first hand during our abysmal one night stay this weekend 6/15/24. I just got off the phone with the Monterey Building Code enforcement office and informed them of the many, many clear and patently unsafe conditions at this location. The stairs leading to the second floor room were horribly in need of repair with cracked, slippery loose tiles at every level. Loose railings at the second floor level. The entire (ENTIRE) laminate floor in the room has separated from the subfloor due obviously to water damage SOME TIME AGO and would present a ridiculous tripping hazard to ANYONE, but most notably older or younger guests. The place was absolutely filthy from top to bottom, not to mention what was growing under that flooring. Mold at every corner in the shower, a dresser held together with numerous blue lath drywall screws. The only reason we ended up at this open landfill of a hotel was because our original reservation at the Monterey Fairgrounds Inn across the street was unavailable (we learned only at our arrival) as that ENTIRE HOTEL HAS BEEN CONDEMNED BY THE CITY SOME TIME AGO!! I'm sure it had already been condemned prior to the date of making our reservation there, and they shuttled us off across the street to this Petrie dish, the Rodeway Inn. I am in my mid-sixties, and in my entire lifetime I have NEVER seen such egregious safety violations or outright filthy conditions in any of my previous accommodations. The room was filthy, someones clothes were left in the drawer and food was left in the microwave. It smelled like cigarettes so bad so we tried to open a window but the windows had no screens and let about 20 flies into the room. When we went to get into bed someones hair tie full of hair was in the bed sheets. The towels had stains all over them and smelled like they left them in the washer for a few days before putting them in the dryer. This was the worst for the expense of it. Never expected it from a Choice Hotel. The shower curtain was badly stained. Management was very stingy on the towels for 2 people....1 wash cloth, 1 hand towel, 2 bath towels. The telephone did not work. The few electrical outlets were loose and not stable. Several floor boards/wooden planks were lifting and the floor was dirty....I have socks to prove it! There wasn't even a coffee maker in the room!!!! No amenities whatsoever! I am a frequent traveler, and the service problems here went way beyond that of the disappointments of a cheap hotel. When I arrived at the front office was closed and I had to use a side night office for all of my communication which in itself is not a problem, but the front office seem to be storing construction supplies. Having a site under construction is also not a problem, but when I was placed in a hotel room that had no locking mechanism and when I asked to change, they said no begin my problems. My room was also in the midst of construction clearly missing facings and was filthy. I did not feel safe here. I left immediately and the hotel refused to refund me given my objections. No one cares about this establishment. I stayed here out of a spontaneous decision to stay one more night in Monterey. For $100 night, I expected just a tad bit better than this. The stairs are falling apart outside to get to the upper level. Inside the room the carpet is coming up. The bathroom sink drain has a visible monster growing inside which inhibits proper draining and creates a pool for a while in the sink. The light fixture next to the bed is complete with sparking and popping. The beds are like sleeping on sharp coils that move like an accordion. The smoke alarm goes off if you take a shower and doesn't stop. Walls are paper thin you can hear the person yawn in the room next to you. Never ever will stay here again. read more

Do not waste your time staying here. The moment you walk in, the room smells like cigarette smoke. We requested another room and same issue, all the rooms are probably like this. Everything in the room is falling apart. The bathroom mirrors are scratched so badly, the paint in the room is coming off, showers are cracked. We bought brand new food from whole foods (which we all know isn't cheap) and specifically spoke with the house keeper a couple times "please do not throw anything in our fridge away" they said ok, and when we came back every thing was gone. They even threw away/ took our glassware we had some of our food in that we brought. We spoke to the front desk and he said it's in the dumpster. The beds are insanely uncomfortable, the sheets are terrible. The couch seat looks dirty. The water pressure for the shower is terrible. Do your self a favor and stay anywhere else in beautiful Monterey. My actual review is 0 stars. read more

BED BUGS and DIRTY! (Update below) It's basically my husbands and my fault for wanting to save a little on the hotel. Next time we'll for sure loosen the purse strings and stay somewhere nicer, cleaner and friendlier. The room was stuffy, a/c barely worked, room was dirty, shower was gross and we found dead bugs like roaches and moths. The key card was fickle to work with, the door had to be shoved shut. There were scratches on the walls, dents and scrapes where then second bed would be, what looked to be bodily fluids on the walls and of course bed bugs. I took a video of how bad the room was but it doesn't do it justice. There was no toilet paper and when we asked for one roll we never got it. The bed was broken. The box spring was the broken part and when we layer down we would gravitate towards the center. There was a desk chair but that was broken too. Just overall gross. Yes it's conveniently off the 1 Hwy but sooo not worth it stress of actually staying there. ****UPDATE**** About three days after we returned home, we noticed bug bites all up and down our arms. Finger tips to our shoulders. They were bed but bites. We didn't see any bed bugs but they were there. We did a deep clean of everything at home and thankfully none followed us. I called the Hotel to get directions. The person I spoke to, was hard to understand..I did not speak his dialect either.He hung up on me. I asked directions at another hotel. the room smelled like stale cigarettes. The floors , wall, doors were filthy. I wiped down all surfaces. The one fabric chair was also dirty. There was a blanket over the seat..check out was at 11am. I took down one load, returned for my final one, the card key did not work! I was locked out! I went to the office window where a young man asked if I forgot something..I told him I was loading my car. He said any stay past 11am would be considered the 2nd night stay..This was maybe 5 mins after 11! Got my key and finished loading my car.! This whole group needs to take Hospitality seminars..! I should have gone to Yelp before staying here.Check-in was through a window due to "Covid." Almost no words, No mention of the WiFi. Just initial on x's and handed key. Clerk was completely in the dark, so could barely see them, in the middle of the day. Lumpy bed that was so wrinkled I hoped it was clean. Dirty sock on the floor. The room chair was so stained I never sat there. TV was on, but not on a channel when I came in, and did not work. Could not even turn it off. Finally unplugged it to go to bed. Light bulb burned out by bed and fixture was barely attached to the wall. Mold on walls in bathroom, shower curtain was half off. All metal fixtures were rusty, and a big moldy ball of hair in the tub drain to add a final gross finish. read more

Zero stars is my actual rating. We originally had a reservation across the street at the Fairgrounds Inn, but it had been condemned by the city before our arrival. They shouldn't be accepting reservations at all. They are running a bait-and-switch operation. They pushed us across the street to Rodeway which charges approx. $60 dollars for a Saturday night right now. We had already paid Fairgrounds $150. No, Fairgrounds did not return the over payment. Yet. We were scammed, and will be seeking a refund. Rodeway should also be shut down due to hazardous conditions. Loose and broken steps that lead to the 2nd floor, buckled, broken and widely separated floor planks inside our room which probably contain mold beneath. I've never seen anything like it and I have a fair amount of travel experience. I won't waste your time describing the bathroom. I'm sure you get the idea by now. I wish I'd taken photos, but I photograph things that I want to remember, and this place is definitely not that. Thankfully, the bed looked clean. I don't understand how they've been allowed to stay open for business. We practically ran out of there as soon as we could the next morning and were grateful to have gotten a nice, clean, safe affordable room elsewhere for another night in Monterey. This was my 3rd time staying at one of these and each time has been pretty terrible. I will never stay here again no matter how road weary I get, and I strongly suggest everyone else avoid this place like the plague that it is. Safe travels, everyone! read more

This was the nastiest hotel I have ever stayed in. I walked in and it smelled horrible. The sheets were stained and I could tell they hadn't been changed so I pulled them off. As I pulled one sheet off I noticed there was a motorcycle glove in the corner of the bed. I happened to look under the bed and found a bag full of credit cards and an Id, and dirty socks. I decided to search the bed where my daughter was gonna sleep in and found a box of lubricant and a broken cell phone. I had food I needed to put away in the fridge but there was hair inside the fridge. I turned in all those things to the front desk that morning . I was supposed to stay there two nights but barely made it through 6 hours. I wasn't even going to stay that night but we got in after midnight and I was tired from driving. I couldn't even get myself to shower. This place was disgusting. You could tell they hadn't even vacuumed in God knows how long. DO NOT STAY HERE! DIRTY, DIRTY, DIRTY ! DO NOT STAY HERE! I cannot believe this hotel was recommended by Choice hotels. This was by far the dirtiest most run down place I've ever stayed. I couldn't believe the amount of holes in the wall, random beat down dressers and the disgusting bed and covers. As soon as I walked in the room I was hit with the smell of wet dog. The room was humid and muggy and the window was wet like someone just took a steaming hot shower. The cleaning lady had an old mop bucket and rag as her cleaning supplies. I opted out of the room service because of how disgusting this room was to begin with. Needless to say. I'll never stay here again and in the future I'll never use Choice hotels to book again. This is a filthy, dirty, discussing smelling place  excuse for hospitality!  There is no hospitality here none whatsoever!  If this is how you treat a paying guest I wonder how you treat your friends who come visit you at your home!  I booked 2 nights and the first night I hardly slept.  The stench in the room was awful. The toilet, vanity, tub shower were beyond dirty!  They hadn't seen cleaners in months.  The toilet had dried urine on it!  I used my own blanket and pillow for fear I would be laying on something dirty!  The next morning I asked to be moved to another room.  They moved me to another dirty room where the toilet was just as dirty as the first one.  They moved me again and it repeated the same scenario! The wall paper is hanging on, walls are dirty,  fridge are dirty, vanity again was dirty.  I asked the manager/owner if he could have someone clean the toilet and when they finally arrived the husband/wife team knocked on my door and after 1 knock proceeded to unlock my door as I opened it.  Wow, scary!  The owner is from a third world country where they have no standards and have no idea how we do things in the USA!  If you can't live up to the standards of the USA you shouldn't own a business here!  DON'T STAY HERE! Over priced for the condition of the room. Check in was at 3, I waited in my car until 3:20 before being able to go to my room. I watched them clean, was very fast. So the additional money you pay for COVID maintenance or whatever is a joke. A towel in my rooms bathroom had a dead moth on it, was probably a towel left there from the previous people who stayed there. Wall paper was ripped off on half of the wall, left me wondering when the last time any updates to the room were made. Also, was very loud do to the airport. And I kept hearing loud noises. I cannot believe how rundown and terrible this place is considering we are paying $172/night (granted it is the summer). Spotty one bar wifi, busted furniture, dirty phone and one stained chair, dirty coffee maker and no coffee, ice machine you have to pay for but not container, curtains are not blackout so the fluorescent light outside lights our room all night. Near an airport I didn't realize too. Hard to sleep. Just an unbelievable dump. Really sorry I booked here based on price (Monterey jacks up prices in summer but had no choice this weekend). I stayed in the room 121 on second floor. I found woman's hair on my pillow, there was mold in the restroom & walls had some type of yellow stains. Carpet was definitely old. This half shower or whatever you want to refer it to was yellowish looking. For whatever reason, owners of this place are not willing to renovate this hotel. Outside of this hotel, it's nice looking. I give this hotel credit for getting solar panels. The location of the hotel is great. That's the highlight of this whole thing. read more

Two stars because this place served its purpose - gave us a place to sleep. Outside of that, we enjoyed a sink that leaked out onto the floor with each use (given the extent of the water damage to the room, I'd say this was not a new occurrence), mold in the grout of the shower, mold on the wall behind the sink, a quite literally filthy walls/base boards/doors, etc. Sheets appeared to be clean though? After reading all the reviews, we were pretty scared to stay there, but the room was already booked and so we gave it a try. First things first; we survived and it wasn't as bad as we expected. Still, this place is totally run down and I can understand anyone who is disappointed. But at a price around 40$ per night, one should be sceptical, since this price is very suspicious in a pricey area such as Monterey. You should come here with the lowest of expectations and probably with some experience in low budget hostels/motels. (I can tell you, that I have seen much worse lodging in Eastern Europe, so we found a way to cope with this inn.) The level of cleanliness was actually okay. After all, their facilities/furnishing is a total mess. Their walls really need a renovation. There were cracks in the bathroom and the wallpapers had holes and swollen parts, also their isolation was pretty bad. We heard every word of our neighbours. The bed made strange noises, too. At least, they upgraded their tv to a regular flatscreen with lots of HD channels. Their breakfast is a bad joke as many before stated out. Don't even go there and try. All in all; if you're used to low-budget accommodations in newly industrialized countries, the Rodeway Inn probably is a good place to stay. You save lots of money in this pricey area. Do yourself a favor and don't stay here , the staff are rude and completely unaccommodating. I parked and could see through open curtains that several rooms were ready and saw housekeepers were working on other rooms. I asked if I could get an early check in because I had to leave for work soon and even offered to pay a fee to do so and was told no and that rooms wouldn't be ready until after 3pm even though check-in is at 3. The housekeeper even saw me waiting and pointed to several rooms and told me they were ready. After getting the room late and almost being late for work I opened the door and the room was very dirty , every flat surface was dusty and almost sticky from built-up grime. There were hairs still stuck to the countertops. I regret not taking pictures to post because it was gross. it smelled like smoke, the floorboards creaked and the walls were so thin you could hear every small noise from adjacent rooms. The room was very sloppily painted and the were marks everywhere in room from terrible patch jobs and shoddy repair work. The whole property is very worn out and all the furnishings in the room were cheap and low quality and poorly maintained. Probably the worst hotel experience I have ever had. I'm pretty sure the few reviews on here that are above one or two stars are not genuine because the word choice so generic and all "anonymous" posters , seems like the same person wrote them all. Horrible customer service do not go there don't be fouled remember cheap isn't always good..Not worth the time or your money. Indian owners with no customer service wants so ever if you have any issues/problems they do not help you they only care about your money. Not all rooms have Jacuzzis special request on this and you do not have an ocean view at all from your room. Look through review they are not good. I've stayed at other Rodeway Inns and I have to say this is the WORST. The room was extremely out dated, it needed a good dusting, paint job, and a good cleaning. The beds were extremely soft, lumpy and squeaky. The bathroom & tub had mold. The walls had holes and peeling wallpaper. The light above the bathroom sink was, well just disgusting. We found a pincher bug in one of the drawers that had a pillow in it. There were nails sticking out of the carpet were it meets the bathroom tile, there was no track strip. When I asked for more towels I was taken to a room that had 1 washer & 1 dryer in it and the guy picked up 2 towels off a pile on the floor and gave them to me. Then another guy took those and gave me ones from somewhere in the office. They didn't have their Continental Breakfast because the main office was closed. Had to do business thorough their Night Window. Glad I was only staying 1 night. I'll never stay there again. THIS PLACE WAS JUST HORRIBLE!! read more

The only reason I am giving this hotel 5 stars in the delightful service by the front desk gentleman Danny. He was polite and prompt. We really enjoyed his service. The bed could use some work. The cover for the heater was coming off. It was loud and hard to sleep from the parking lot noise. I've stayed at other rodway inns. I don't have a huge expectation because of the price. The Good Lord help you if you don't pay attention to all the one star reviews...especially this one. What's wrong with the Rodeway Inn? OVERPRICED. Over $140/night with all the discounts for a small room. UNCOMFORTABLE. With two old, uncomfortable mattresses, very thin bedding. Of the two pillows on the bed I slept on, one was thin and the other was lumpy. SCARY. There was a TV that only played one channel...all about the zombie apocalypse. NO HOT WATER. What the literal F?!? Yes. Two mornings in a row - nothing but cold water. You know what that means? No f'ing shower - just a little washcloth action to keep from being stinky. CHARGED THE CREDIT CARD TWICE! And when the error was brought to the attention of staff, they didn't fix it. They just said call Corporate. CORPORATE DOES NOT GIVE ANY SUPPORT! Called Corporate and was told in the very nicest way that they didn't give a F and because the motel was a privately owned business they couldn't do anything.
