I've traveled the world and this experience has been so friendly, Beyond his professional and friendly demeanor, he went above and beyond for my family. Traveling with a toddler has its challenges, and Marquis didn't hesitate to help me heat up my daughter's dinner in the hotel kitchen and then offered to send up a microwave to our room..That level of kindness and "can-do" attitude really set the tone for our trip. Later in the evening, we grabbed dinner at the hotel bar, the complimentary wine was definitely a plus as it was a mommy daughter trip and the experience continued to impress. Our bartender, Rob, was absolutely wonderful. He was so attentive, sweet, and made sure we had everything we needed for a delicious, relaxing meal. THE MEAL- insane. I was expecting "bar food" I was astonished when I ordered the marry me chicken and the sauce was so rich and decadent. I make marry me chicken at home and my sauce isn't nearly as good... The staff here clearly understands the meaning of true hospitality. It's the small, thoughtful details--like helping a parent with a toddler's meal or providing genuine, friendly service at the bar--that make Hotel Abrego stand out in Monterey. Whenever my husband and I come to Monterey, we stay at Hotel Abrego. We've stayed here three times, and I absolutely love this property. Rooms are extremely comfortable and clean. Great beds and pillows! I loved the fact that our room had a fireplace. The lobby is lovely, and complimentary wine is served during happy hour. It's nice to sip a glass in front of their fireplace, or outside on their patio by the fire pit. A hot breakfast, very well made, is a great element of Hotel Abrego. The hotel also has its own restaurant for dinner. I've not eaten there, but it looks great! The heated pool and hot tub are fabulous! I loved being able to have an early morning swim and a night soak. The fitness center is also a great perk. It has everything you need for a solid workout. Grounds are clean and well kept. Location is central or downtown Monterey. There's a few walkable restaurants across the street (pizza, Chinese, Thai, and coffee shop for breakfast and lunch). It's also only five minutes from Heirloom Pizza, the best pizza place I've ever been to, in Monterey or anywhere else. Hotel employees understand what hospitality is all about. Just got back from a little getaway and wanted to share my thoughts on the place. Overall, it was a pretty decent stay. They even had some complimentary wine waiting, which was a really nice and unexpected touch. The breakfast wasn't exactly gourmet, but I could tell they were putting in an effort, which I appreciated. The TVs in the room were a bit of a letdown, though. They seemed pretty small and definitely on the older side. Still, it wasn't a bad spot for the price. Would consider staying again if I was in the area. read more

Hotel Abrego is an acceptable accommodation but there are definitely some areas for improvement here. When it comes to hotels, the three areas I prioritize most are cleanliness, comfort, and safety. In addition to overall service and price/value of course. After reading the reviews, I requested a room on the top floor in the main building with the elevator and really appreciated that they called me to follow up in advance of my stay to tell me they could honor this request and would also honor my request of a microwave in the room. When I arrived, the check in process was quick and the room was ready even though I arrived almost an hour ahead of check in. The microwave was not in the room but when I let the man at the desk know, who I believe was the manager, he immediately contacted someone to bring up a microwave to my room and they arrived within about half an hour. I did appreciate that they made this accommodation for me. - I felt very safe in the hotel itself and coming/going from the parking lot in the evening. - While the bed was a too firm for my personal preference, the pillows were nice and I still was able to fall asleep without any difficulty. I did not wake up sore so solid points there. Cleanliness/General maintenance I had a few issues with...there was a small stain on the flat sheet in a pretty noticeable spot. While it was clearly an old stain and the linens appeared clean - it should never have made it to that bed. There was also a large dark hair on the shampoo bottle in my shower and I noticed it immediately so I do not know how it was overlooked - hair is one of my biggest icks. My other issue was with the TV and remote. I first picked up the remote and the back fell off of it. A simple piece of tape could have fixed this but the remote itself also seemed a bit unhygienic and really needs a replacement as well as the TV itself. I had planned on staying in to watch the world series and was very disappointed that the channel as well as several other channels basically had no service. I let the manager know and he did refund me the $20 amenities fee, but I would have rather paid the $20 and been able to watch the world series on the TV instead of finding a streaming feed on facebook and watching from my phone. The morning breakfast was also quite disappointing unfortunately. I was down there fairly early but the foods which should be warm were not warm and there was no microwave in the breakfast room to warm anything up. The offerings were also quite basic and limited compared to other hotels I have stayed at - less expensive hotels for that matter. I had seen in a previous review that there were overnight oats and chia pudding with berries and was very excited for this only to find nothing buy yoplait yogurt in the fridge :( I know I should not have assumed those items would be there still but it wad honestly the worst hotel breakfast I have ever had. The quality and variety was just not good. The only thing that was decent was the breakfast burrito, which I took with me to go and heated up when I got back home later that day. I think that Hotel Abrego has a lot of potential but fell short in areas that could easily be improved. The hotel itself feel dated and in need of an upgrade. I paid notably more at Hotel Abrego than the other two hotels I stayed at in Pleasant Hill and Moss Landing and while I recognize the area is a reflection of the price, it was definitely disappointing when I thought I was going to be treating myself to a nicer hotel. I am glad I only stayed one night. I usually like to lounge around and take my time in the morning before checking out but honestly felt no desire to do so here and left as soon as I could get myself ready and out the door. We were traveling up and down the Cali/Oregon coast, and stayed at 5 hotels during the week. I rate Hotel Abrego number 3 out of 5. It was a fairly expensive hotel, which husband chose and booked. I tend to shop around more than he does, for the best deals, and probably would not have selected this one. It did look nice from the thumbnail. The exterior is pleasant enough, but nothing to write home about, though parking is free, which is always a plus. There was plenty of room in the parking lot. The receptionist was a very nice man, off to the right, was a bar, where several guests were getting their Welcome Drink, and having a chat with the barman. I could also see a patio off to the side, if you wanted to take your drink outside in the afternoon sunshine. We were tired, had driven from San Francisco, encountered some huge traffic jams, and just wanted to dump our luggage and go eat. We were told our building was directly across the parking lot, on the 2nd floor. There are no elevators, so you've got to walk up a flight of stairs with your luggage - immediately, I'm deducting a star for that. The room itself looked welcoming and cosy, in "earth tones" aka browns and beiges. It has an electric fire?!? In California? There was no chance that we'd be lighting that. The AC was quiet fortunately. There is a faux balcony, that you can't rally climb out onto, though judging by the state of the insect mesh screen, people had attempted to do just that. He metal edges were significantly bent on both sides, meaning that the mesh screen was ineffective for it's purpose, and i could not have left the window open, as insects of a fairly significant size could have gotten in. There is no microwave. The basin in the bathroom is of a strange design, and is very shallow, with the water spigot coming down quite low, and it causes a lot of splashing. There's also nothing to each side of the basin on which to put cosmetic bag, toiletries or anything. It's just a standalone basin, not even a closet underneath. There was a slim shelf above the toilet, or the actual back of the toilet cistern itself. Very poorly designed. Ladies need somewhere to put their makeup bag, and their toiletries, and that's just for the woman, if there's also a significant other, you're kinda scrambling. It needs attention, I really want better facilities at this price. The breakfast area is pleasant enough, and there were wrapped and pre-assembled breakfast burritos, home fries, and scrambled eggs, yogurt, fruit, and some kind of chia/tapioca looking parfait in a glass. The burrito was very nice actually. I enjoyed the fact that it was quiet (our previous hotel was super loud, chaotic and very busy, you could not have a conversation) It also has a pretty good Chinese Restaurant, directly across the street from it, with excellent prices and portion sizes,if you arrive at dinnertime as we did. There were a few food options in the small strip mall, as well as a food truck. It's not too far a drive to the interesting areas downtown. Not a bad hotel, but improvements could be made. read more

Although the hotel is officially rated as a three-star property, it definitely deserves a four-star rating. The facility is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, and the staff truly goes above and beyond. The complimentary breakfast was outstanding - with a variety of options such as porridge, omelette, burrito, cereals, juices, milk, baguettes with Philadelphia cheese, yogurts, and a selection of fruits, which my children absolutely loved. Our room was very spacious with comfortable beds and pillows, and we appreciated the free parking available on site. Due to an unforeseen situation--my husband falling ill--we had to check out one day earlier. The kind lady at the front desk assisted us with canceling the second night's booking and was extremely accommodating. Overall a good hotel esp for the price, but can be noisy depending on your room. I was pleasantly surprised to find a room at the price point I did and this was walking distance from the main Alvarado street, about 15 min walk to the pier as well. The front desk and overall every staff was extremely friendly and upon checkin they mentioned our deluxe room got upgraded to one with a fireplace which was perfect as we were visiting in winter. Checkout also wasn't until noon which I was surprised by as most places make you check out much earlier. However the issue we had was the noise. We were in the first floor and I wish I had requested anything but that, as the guests upstairs were loud and had people coming in and out until past midnight. You can hear the knocking on the door, the slamming of doors, the running up and down stairs, stomping, and even their actual convos when they're loud enough. I had to take sleeping pills the second night because I couldn't sleep with all the noise until late the first. Other than the lowsy noise infrastructure and loud upstairs guests, everything was fine. There are daily complimentary wine per guests and breakfast buffet which is baked into your fees as amenities ($20pp). Housekeeping is upon request. Probably the most bang for your buck in the area and I would stay again but request a room not on first in the future. read more

Check in was a breeze and We Were welcomed by the Manager named Jennifer and informed us with all the hotel's amenities to enjoy during our stay. We have complimentary glass of wine as well. The rooms we stayed is super clean with a beautiful patio overlooking the pool and hot tub area and we got the premier room with fire place so it feels so cozy even more. I went on a pretty slow weekday in January. There were maybe 10 cars in the parking lot. Upon check in we were greeted by a young man who condescendingly said "you're only staying 2 nights so room service is upon request" as if Monterey was Hawaii or something lol. Tbf he probably just doesn't have enough training. We went to our room and everything was okay at first until we started noticing little issues: - fireplace wasn't working - ac wasn't working - bathroom fan wasn't working I'd be surprised if that room didn't have mold honestly. When I went to the front desk it turned out that ALL the rooms in the wing I was in didn't have working ac / fans. Man claimed it was (central cooling issues) whatever that means. I spoke to the assistant manager Marquise and explained that my wife has asthma and was having trouble in the room. We typically aren't complainers but in this case it was a health concern so there was no way around it. He handled the situation quickly and got us into another room that didn't have any issues. I appreciate Marquise doing this so quickly because it really changed the perspective of the entire trip and the hotel itself. The low stars are not for the service I received but just the state of the hotel itself. I'm adding an entire star for the breakfast because it was one of the best I've had. The price was fair for the season and I think I got my moneys worth. The location is great and you can easily walk to downtown, Altar Bakery, Alvarado Brewery and the wharf. read more

And what are they cleaning or rearranging furniture? Last minute booking. On our way to Monterey for a quick getaway didn't expect to stay a night but we packed light just incase we were staying over night. With two littles and our ETA was almost 4pm we decided to just stay the night. While still on the road I made a quick search and found this Hotel to be the closest thing we were looking for amenities wise. It wasn't cheap but it was definitely a cheaper option compared to others around for a last minute booking and it looked nice with good reviews. I called the front desk after booking to confirm they received our reservations. He was nice but spoke so fast, low and he seems like he was in a hurry. I booked directly on their website (it was cheaper than book on a 3rd party site). One room Deluxe 2 queen bed. Free parking, free breakfast, WiFi, a/c, Tv, free breakfast, Noon check out. They also had other nice amenities such as gym, pool/hot tub, guest laundry, a bistro and also a glass of wine during their happy hour (included with the amenity fee). The hotel room was fairly clean, few dirty stains on the wall, carpet could use a shampoo and the a/c could use alittle dusting. The bed were not the most comfortable is was springy and lopsided. The pillows were too soft I need to stack 2 on top to get some kind of support. There was no microwave. The breakfast was decent. Love that this hotel really close the Aquarium/ Pier. Overall a solid 3.5. Would stay again if we're in the area and the price is right. read more

We loved this hotel as we stayed in their king room with the fireplace. We stayed in one of the rooms that was inside the hotel as there are rooms outside of the main hotel. The room had plenty of space and we had our own private balcony which was nice. The sofa was nice which also had a bed but no sheets. It was nice that the TV could be rotated to where ever you are. Breakfast was one of the best in my opinion where they had different options such as huevos rancheros, burritos, eggs, potatoes, overnight oats, yogurt parfaits, bagels, and fresh juices. They have a large dining room which is nice. They also offer wine happy hour. We did not dine in their restaurant but wish we would have. They also have plenty of parking and what is nice is that they charge a fee but it includes free parking and breakfast. They note it on their website. The reason I did not give them 5 stars is because when we stayed it was raining and due to it the hotel was facing plumbing issues which did not let you shower, use the bathroom, or wash your hands. read more

Friendly customer service, clean and comfortable rooms and a great complimentary breakfast and evening wine service made my stay at Hotel Abrego stand out from other hotels in the area. I booked a two queen room for one night. We were promptly greeted upon arrival and informed about all amenities, as well as the breakfast and nightly wine that is offered in the lounge. Only the main building has an elevator. We were placed in another building so we did have to walk up stairs to our 2nd floor room. It wasn't a big deal to us but if you have a lot of luggage, maybe try to request a room in the main building. The rooms themselves are very clean and comfortable. There was a smaller tv and a fireplace. The fireplace was a little tricky to work and we didn't quite figure it out during our stay. The bathroom was quite spacious and there was also another sink located outside the bathroom for use as well. The property does have a pool and hot tub but the hot tub was out of service when we were there. Pool towels were available for use. I will say the breakfast was a great spread with breakfast sandwiches, eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, bagels, waffles, French toast, oatmeal and chia seed pudding. There is also a lounge area where you can purchase dinner and a full bar. Overall I was impressed with this property and I would for sure return. read more

Booked this stay using points! Took the kids on a short trip with one night here. Cute place right in Monterey. Super close to everything (aquarium, Dennis the Menace Park). Check in is later (4pm) but check out is noon and I like that. Grabbed my complimentary wine at happy hour before heading to the room. Decided for convenience to just eat at the hotel restaurant for dinner. Kids meals are basic. I had the teriyaki skewers and they were delicious. Hubs had the ribs and those were good too. We checked out the spa and pool. Only complaint here is that the pool towels are extremely small!! Smaller than the bathroom towels! Went back to the restaurant for dessert. Really wanted the chocolate cake but they were out. Chef special was turtle cheesecake and it was amazing. So was the chocolate martini. The bartender/restaurant server was awesome. Didn't catch his name but he was so nice. Breakfast was nice. I was surprised how many breakfast burritos they made (and how many were still there close to end time! So much waste). What a lovely stay at Hotel Abrego. My husband and I went on a whim and decided to book a room at this hotel last minute. It was a great decision and I'm glad we had a great trip. The breakfast was delicious. I wish they replenished the food at the peak time of 9am because there wasn't much food at that time. Perhaps they were backed up, because someone came and stocked up the next batch of food around 9:45am. However, by that time, I was pretty much done with my meal. One thing to note is that the walls are thin and you can hear people in the hallways as well as the guests next door. I suggest bringing your earplugs. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I thought the property was pretty. The pool was huge, the hot tub had strong jets, and the pool furniture was super cute. I recommend this spot and would stay here again. We had a great stay at Hotel Abrego, our upgraded king with fireplace was beautiful. The room even included a balcony with sitting area. The bathroom had upgraded fixtures and amenities. They also include a free glass of wine at 5 PM in their full bar bistro. They offer a complimentary breakfast buffet. I stayed at the hotel for 1 night with my family. I booked 2 rooms through booking dot com. When I checked in the front desk checked me and my family of 7 into 1 room, I said I booked 2 rooms the 2 people at the front desk said no there's only 1 room on file with my name, then the 2 workers reassured that my family of 7 would fit in the 1 room because it was a disability room. After checking in and having a distraught evening I decided to check my credit card and saw I was in fact charged for 2 rooms. I stormed to front office at which point the worker said "oh yeah I see you have 2 rooms under your name". I said at this point since we are nearing 10pm I want a refund for the 2nd room which we were Not checked into because they failed to find it in the first place. The worker said no problem "management would take care of this in the morning" and there would be a message input to narrate what happened and I should get refunded. Come 1 week later I called about my refund, the lady who answered the phone said the refund of $287 was handled on 6/29/25, yet I checked my account and it was only refunded $22! Not the $287 I was told I would be refunded on 6/29/2025. I spoke to an incompetent worker from booking.com who states the hotel would be responsible in handling the refund; at this point, this is the worst $287 I've lost, not including my time wasted in attempts to getting this all sorted out, without reaching any refund resolution. read more

This hotel is conveniently located close enough to the Marina but reasonably away from the airport (no airflight noise). I was able to visit the sites on my list. The evening staff was very welcoming. Check in was a breeze. The room was very clean and I was so pleased with the bathroom. It is super modern and oh-so spacious. I took advantage of the tub on my last day for a bath. I appreciated the breakfast that was provided. Plenty of variety for me (food and tea wise) and my fav were the chia oatmeal cups. There is a restaurant onsite for dinner and the dining area is very welcoming. I was able to use the fitness and business center rooms. Both were adequate. Unfortunately, I couldn't soak in the swimming pool as weather wasn't up to par. read more

SCAM ALERT. SAVE YOURSELF A HEADACHE AND MONEY- DO NOT STAY HERE. Unfortunately I am writing this review after what we thought was a decent stay at Hotel Abrego. Upon our arrival we were greeted and given the run down of the property and our room. We went to drop off our stuff in the room before heading back out, and noticed a musty weird smell but my partner, who has stayed in many off brand hotels for work, said that's just what old motels start smelling like and we moved on with our day and stayed our two nights. Come to find out- after checking out we were charged $250 for a "smoke smell in the room". Mind you - me and my partner have NEVER smoked a day in our lives and are actively AGAINST smoking. Not to mention we were barely in the room at all on the trip - literally only to change and sleep. Upon speaking with the hotel assistant manager Marquis and telling him he is literally scamming two innocent customers that left the hotel room exactly how we found it minus used bed sheets- he essentially told us tough luck. I emailed Hotel Abrego as well with a plea to make this right- in which I did not even receive a response. All we wanted was a relaxing trip to Monterey- which we thought we had until this hotel decided to try to scam us. Save yourself $250 and a headache from their slimy customer service and musty/old smelling rooms. This hotel is NOT worth your stay and will be reported for their baseless accusations. read more

This is a lovely hotel near downtown Monterey. My husband and I booked a last minute stay there, and while expensive it was still cheaper than most of nearby hotels (and certainly cheaper than the ones in Carmel). Upon checking in we were given our wine tickets included in the $20 amenity fee. We dropped our items off and headed straight to the bar; driving down on a Friday before long weekend is no fun, and we were eager to decompress from the week. Our bartender Kathleen greeted with us with such warmth I wanted to stay and chat with her forever. We were given a choice between Sauvignon blanc vs Cabernet/Syrah blend; we opted for the latter. She gave us each a very generous pour, almost filled our glasses to the rim. We sat out in the outdoor area for a bit and took our glasses up to our room so we could get ready for our evening out. The next morning we got to check out their free breakfast spread (included in the $20 amenity fee). There were breakfast burritos (veggie vs sausage), steel cut oatmeal, yogurt parfait, cereal, juice, and some pastries. Pretty solid and a good variety. We grabbed our quick bites and left for a nice stroll in old downtown Monterey. Overall the hotel exceeded our expectations! The room was spacious and we slept quite well through the night. There were even clean robes inside the closet (I could never turn down a warm clean bathrobe). Albeit the walls were a bit thin but luckily no major noise issues; even my light sleeper husband slept through without waking up. Location is also great, within walking distance to lots of cute cafes and restaurants in downtown. I would definitely return and check out their rental bikes ($30 for 8 hrs) next time. read more

Unauthorized Charges and Terrible Service I booked a room at Hotel Abrego via hotels.com for a few days in early April and ended up needing to cancel my trip. I cancelled my reservation a few days prior to the cancellation deadline. This hotel went ahead and charged my credit card (twice!) for the entire stay without my authorization! When I discovered the unauthorized charge on my bank statement, I contacted hotels.com / my credit card company and this hotel immediately. Hotels.com and my credit card company suggested I speak with the hotel so I did. Let me tell you, getting ahold of someone who could actually help was a whole ordeal in itself with this hotel.. Finally, after multiple calls and waiting for a few days, they admitted their mistake. It took days of back-and-forth communication to get my money back, and frankly, the whole experience left a very sour taste in my mouth. Not only did they violate my trust by charging my card without permission, but their customer service was absolutely abysmal. In the end they didn't even give all my money back! read more

Avoid this dump! Hotel is run down and the rooms stink. They also try to scam you by claiming you smoked in the room and charge you a $250 cleaning fee. read more

Excellent value in Monterey. I don't know if weekends are more expensive but my weekday stays are very affordable. Breakfast is ok. Location in downtown Monterey is excellent and I like that it's far from the tourist areas like Cannery Row. Furnishings are very nice, service is efficient. Maybe the only thing is if you arrive late parking is a challenge. read more

This is a charming boutique hotel on the Monterey Bay. The front desk staff are fabulous especially Daniel. He is quite professional and accommodating, Haley is also super friendly and and professional. They do charge a nightly amenities fee which covers the nightly glass of wine and the hot breakfast- so those things are not necessarily " included" in the nightly room rate (as positioned) but it is a nominal fee and worth it over all. Would definitely recommend this boutique spot to anyone traveling on our CA Coast, and looking for something other than a large chain hotel. read more

Abrego is our new go-to hotel for Monterey! Very reasonably priced compared to some of the other hotels in the area. You get a lot of value for what you pay here! Rooms aren't the largest but very comfortable. Ours had a fire place and balcony! Room had a shower with good water pressure and hot water, so no complaints. I usually cringe at resort fees, but for $20 daily here it includes a complimentary breakfast, parking, and a glass of wine at their daily happy hour. The daily breakfast exceeded my expectations! They always had eggs, potatoes, and another hot dish (like breakfast burritos, bagel sandwich, pancakes, etc.). Full assortment of yogurt, oatmeal, toast, fruit, juices/milk/coffee, etc. Being on vacation, it was nice to just walk down to their lobby and enjoy a hot filling meal to get the day started! With the Abrego, parking lot is steps away from your room and for most rooms...you an actually see your car from your room's balcony! Parking is usually an issue with Monterey hotels...you're either parking in off-site garages or paying $40-$50 daily fees for valet parking (on top of resort fees). It's about a 5-10 minute walk to get to the downtown area, and 20-30 minutes to the aquarium! You aren't in a central location and next to the water like some of the more pricey hotels, but given the short walk, it's not bad at all. Overall, very impressed and enjoyed our stay at the Abrego...we definiteley will be here again the next time we visit Monterey! read more

We booked our stay in Monterey during our mini vacation on the way to the bay area as I have never stopped over in this area before. Location: close enough to downtown Monterey and all of the cute shops so it's convenient but a little far enough that you have to drive, which is good since there's not many tourists or pedestrians Parking: free in their lot, but spaces are small Service: The front office staff were nice and friendly. They have complimentary water near their small restaurant and coffee in the mornings in the lobby. Room: Small, but OK for what we needed, which was just a place to sleep while exploring around town. Walls are also pretty thin so I could hear the neighbors talking. What knocked off a couple of stars despite my good review so far was that I had thought I lost a piece of jewelry in the room during the middle of the night and thought that it fell on the floor so I was looking all over the floor and noticed that there was 1) rubber bands on the floor that were obviously not ours and 2) there was a green stuffed animal of the oogie boogie monster from Disneyland that was underneath the bed, which is DEFINITELY not ours so this goes to show you that they either do not clean the carpet or do not thoroughly clean the rooms, or both. That was really disappointing to see that.. read more

The hotel was really clean and close to the aquarium we wanted to visit. We were able to walk to get food so location is convenient. Front desk was nice and even gave us a run down of things to do in the area! Parking was also nice right in front of our door. The fire was also a big plus on the rainy night we stayed. read more
