If I could put no stars I would, a family friend stayed there for a short time with his family and had a terrible experience. The hotel room he stayed in was infested with bed bugs that bit his family and himself but his youngest little daughter got it the worst, all over her face and arms. They tried to put ointment on her, but the bites keep getting worse. Definitely do NOT recommend for anybody to stay at this hotel at any time. The staff didn't do anything about it when they went to the office to complain. They showed them a video of the bed bugs and just said to leave his number and they would let the manager know. He has yet to receive a call from the manager. This is the most unsanitary and unprofessional hotel. Do NOT consider your stay here even if it's affordable. read more

First stay at a Rodeway Inn and am not planning to ever stay at another one if I can successfully avoid it! Monterey is understandably a popular place to visit for out-of-state and international tourists, but $200/night for outdated rooms? No way, Jose. The bedding and sheets did not appear to have been updated since the beginning of time. Room was remarkably cramped. I think there was a gap of only a foot between the two beds and two feet from the foot of the beds to the dresser and TV, meaning the walkways were tiny and hard to get by without hitting furniture or someone's body part. Furthermore, the sheets were thin and uncomfortable to sleep in. Pillows not much of an upgrade. Suffice to say, we did not get a good night's sleep here. Avoid staying here if you can help it. If you plan to stay in Monterey overnight, plan it MONTHS in advance (at least 6 months) and choose a better hotel. You'll be paying more no matter what because it's Monterey; you might as well enjoy it! read more

This was the most disgusting place I've ever stayed. I only stayed here because I couldn't get anything else in Monterey during "car week" and my father was in the local hospital in critical condition. There were yellow stains on the wall, mold in the shower, brown stuff on ice in the refrigerator, peeling paint, weird chemical odor, and I won't even go on. I posted some photos. My last night I left at 2:00am - just couldn't stand to be there anymore. This place was not a bargain either - it was about $275 per night because there was an event in town. On the bright side: Clean linens, plentiful hot water, and an absolutely amazing tile floor in the bathroom area - seriously. This is tile that stepped right out of 1972, glorious browns and oranges, and polished to a mirror sheen. It's almost worth paying to stay the night just to experience this tile. The price is also reasonably cheap given the locale, and the charm of being greeted by a bleary eyed man behind the counter as you check out, clad in an a-shirt, scarcely deigning to turn his sleep-tousled head from the television to grunt a reply can't be beat. The downside: No fire alarm, bugs in the room, mold on the walls, fractured mirror and light fixtures, broken ac, broken refrigerator, drippy bath faucet, holes in the walls, and carpet looks like it was the battleground for world war three. If you're just looking for a cheap place to crash with a shower and coffeemaker, you've come to the right place. If you're looking for anything else, head elsewhere. read more

Impressively bad. My kid wrapped his pillow with his sweatshirt because he found a "pube" on it. Mold, mildew, and an Oder that defies description. The bathroom at the gas station is cleaner. My parents went to spend a weekend away and I reserved the hotel thinking it would be great according to the webpage. They get there and tell me that there's no ac, the curtains are holding with tape, the beds broken, the room smells and there's holes on the walls not to talk about the cigarettes burns. They left after the first night. Funny part is they checked out and the main office was closed where the manager called me all concerned of them leaving before the date. After explaining the manager agreed on giving me a refund and after calling booking.com he again called me threatening and denied the refund. I'm not the one to be f** with so better business bureau is receiving a complaint from me. 300$ for a pigs den is disgusting to me. My parents deserved a great weekend not this. This is actually a Negative-Star review. This hotel was abysmal. I had a "remodeled" room, yet it had the WORST mattress I've every slept on. No cushion, I could feel nearly every spring, it creaked, and it wobbles like it was on a bed frame with wheels. I would've been better off on an air mattress. The absolute worst is that the staff charged me an "early check in fee" and would ONLY accept payment of this "fee" in cash and did not give me a receipt. I knew it was suspicious but am such a goody goody I didn't call the desk clerk on it even though I know I should have. When I complained about the poor night's sleep to the desk clerk, he did nothing at all, offered no recompense. When I called the hotel's General Manager directly, it was no better. And, per the GM, if I thought the cash-only "early check in fee" was suspicious, I should've gotten a receipt or not paid it. The worst place I have ever been to! We got there and as we walked in our room it was disgusting! There was actual pee spots on the toilet, and splatter of spit ask god knows what else's on the vanity mirror! The vanity it self was all cracked ! Garbage inn. Was on the first floor of two and the walls and ceilings were so thin that we could hear all conversations and steps being taken. Along with that, when we came in there was a literal shattered phone screen protector on the bed and stains on the walls. There was a gap between the carpet and the tile floor and every time you stepped on it you got stabbed with random staples. Unfortunately, this is by far the worst hotel experience I have ever had. We made reservations last minute for a local music festival. When we arrived there was another guest in the reception cancelling a room because they said it wasn't clean. I hoped this wasn't the case with all rooms. I was wrong! We checked in to a room that reeked of cigarette smoke, smoke alarm missing and a toilet that had "stuff" on the seat. We went back to reception and they put us in another room and it wasn't much better. Stains on bedding, bad smells, candy wrappers and trash behind the night stand. The rug in the bathroom obviously had not been washed and had dirt all over it when I unfolded it. The bathroom door hinges were failing making it so the door was scraping across the floor. If we had any other option we would have not have stayed there. In short, the worst hotel experience I've ever had. I've seen him treat woman like dirt and caught him coming out of the room that homeless mothers are in late while his wife slept in the unit on property . Only stay here if you have ZERO expectations. First day I arrived my bedspread had blood stains and I had to wipe things down because it looked like nothing had been cleaned in a very long time and the water in the sink was not draining. At the end of the day I tried to go to sleep and the heater control panel was broke. (Was staying at 88 degrees & felt like an oven). I had to change rooms after I cleaned everything. Day two I got back to my room after working hard all day and the room had not been serviced by housekeeping (trash still in room and dirty towels still in restroom & no clean towels). Day three , no coffee or cups provided by housekeeping. Day 4, did not have enough towels. Day 5, I went to use the microwave for the first time & it was filthy. Housekeeping (Marissa) came In to clean it & she wiped the crap out of the microwave and dusted it onto the mini refrigerator seal where the crumbs get stuck & hard to get out. She didn't Clean with any cleaner & who knows how long it had been filthy. She said she's been working there too long. I told her that was all the more reason why the rooms should have been clean because she should have mastered the cleaning skills instead of using her length of employment as an excuse. She didn't even care. I had to ask her to get out of my room because I could clean it better. At the end of the day, the room had not been serviced and I had to ask for clean towels. To my horror, there was a baby roach crawling on one of the so-called clean towels. This place is a nightmare & a big mess! i even found dirty worker clothes in one of the drawers. Some rooms are being renovated and furniture in hallways outside rooms. Ghetto! Seriously, if you have NO standards, you might be able to tolerate staying here. Oh where shall I begin? I guess I will say that first off, if I could leave a half of a star rating I would - what a disgusting hotel - and I am not very picky when it comes to a place where I will only be sleeping for about 6 hours. I found this hotel online - I read reviews and saw some photos, so I was expecting just what the reviews and photos showed - simple, nothing fancy, the basics. I was to be in Monterey for 3 nights for work, and planned to spend no more than 7 hours a day in the hotel - just to shower and sleep. We walked into our lovely room 116 - smack into a still lingering cloud of cigarette smoke. Can't beat that right? The room was about 100 degrees (no exaggeration) and felt like a tropical jungle it was so humid. I reached down immediately to turn on the AC. It made a bunch of noise but did not blow more than a spritz of cold air - maybe because it is hanging 2 inches away from the wall and trim? Here are some other lovely perks: Crushed, empty Budweiser can on the floor dirty fingerprint smears on every wall, door jam and light switch an un-flushed toilet the bathroom light switch was not screwed into the wall mold in the light fixtures on the ceiling 1 pillow on one bed, 1 and 1/2 pillow on the other (it was literally cut in half and stuffed in a pillow case). Mattresses and box springs from 1960's with tears and rodent holes chewed in them Floors that had not been vacuumed - ever. A6 plug power strip with no safety switch plugged into the wall with all 6 plugs attached to it - but don't worry - that's not flammable or anything . . . Outside: overflowing dumpster with rotting food all around it on the ground moldy carpet piled with a rusty ironing board and an old baby seat Don't park you car by the balconies - you might wake up with cigarette butts on the hood of your truck, like I did. We checked in very late after an even longer day of work so we decided to rough it for the night. The front desk girl was super nice and tried her best to help, telling us the manager would be there first thing in the morning so I figured I would talk to him about it. 7:30 AM the next day: all is packed, in the truck and I go down to talk to Mr. Manager. There is no one in the office, but the door that goes from the office to the little attached managers apartment was open. I got to listen to a man brush his teeth and hawk up about 10 luggies before he finally came to help me. When he came to the front desk he was in a shirt and his boxer shorts. How professional of him. I told him of all of our troubles. He told me that there was nothing wrong with the room, that I should be lucky to get this wonderful gem for 99.00 a night because he usually charged 199 a night on weekends. I also told him about the amazing woman who was standing on the balcony from 11 PM until 3 AM yelling on her cell phone about her baby daddy and on and on. His reply was 'I can not control people - if she wants to yell, she can yell - not my problem'. I ended up paying cash for the night and immediately calling choice hotels. They are sending me a refund check (which takes 7 weeks) for my nights stay. So - yes I will get my money back, I will never stay anywhere near this rat infested $hit hole and I learned my lesson - pay a little more and stay someplace where you won't catch funky diseases! read more

Stayed here after our originally booked hotel (on same street) was extremely nasty and rude, Hotels were packed because of music festival at fairgrounds. Fortunately, my husband found this place. The first thing we noticed is that the room smelled clean! *already an improvement from original hotel! Sure, it isn't fancy. Is a little run down. And bed is hard. But, the floors were clean, sheets were not stained, and the front desk help was polite. We paid a lot ($225!) for a mediocre clean room... But it is Monterey on a busy weekend, so that's what you have to expect. And compared to the Embassy Suites room down the street at $450/night, this was a bargain! read more

I have so many choice words about this hotel that I don't even know where to start, whether it be the EXTREME amount of disgusting stains everywhere, especially the chairs, to the BUGS we had crawling on us during the night,. The reason I'm warning you is that it seems a bit fishy when he can spend over 1/2 and hour trying to convince me to give him my credit card info, yet when I arrive, he was the rudest person i've met and snatched my confirmation out of my hand, handed me a key and motioned for me to leave!!!!!!!! WTF??????? I had to come back in and be like "ummm, what room is it????" Total JERK. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!! A few extra bucks is worth not catching syphillis from the sheets, chair, sink or any other surface you may touch!!!! Oh yeah, BY THE WAY, some people on here commented on how the room was clean and good enough for the price..... I realized while i was there that there is a strip of rooms directly behind the office that looked much nicer. I think that they keep those rooms up so that they don't get bad reviews or complaints and they just put people in those "nicer" rooms when it's not full. We got LUCKY enough to stay in what seemed to be the "overflow" section where all the bugs, mold, stains, herpes, syphillis, ghonorrhea, etc. were.... u get the picture. I have to agree with most of the reviews here folks. I stayed here 2 nights (sat & sun in aug) and was on a budget and because it was close to downtown, fisherman's wharf, and cannery row (about 2 miles and a 3-4 minute drive). This entire Fremont St. (or N. Fremont St.) is filled with chain hotels like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Ramada, etc. I had reserved a non-smoking, one bedroom online under my AMEX card. When I arrived, the guy asked me if I had a Mastercard? I said I reserved on your website with my AMEX and No I'm not giving you my Mastercard so you can save some $ when your room is crap, lol. And yes, the room was crap. The end of the carpet touching the tiled bath area shrunk and when I accidentally stepped barefoot over it, I got stung by the mini nails. Not cool! The water in the shower turns from warm to cool to warm again every few minutes. The sink is clogged so the drainage of water is extremely slow. I had to wash my face in the tub spout a couple of times. And seriously, I had only like 6 inches of walk space between the end of the bed and the tv dresser. Wi-Fi was on and off and very slow! No iron or ironing board. Yes, they had microwave and mini-fridge, which I never used. And, they had a/c, which was nice to use to mitigate the smell of carpet. About $150 for 2 nights. read more

Place is meh. I've stayed at this location many times in the past with no issues. My honest advice is to set your expectations on the ground. But you'll get a place to sleep, shower, and poop. I never expect anything beyond that for the price. I'm paying $40 a night. I spent more on dinner tonight, in fact! So I don't mind. The only thing is there are literally no power outlets in these rooms! There's ONE in the bathroom, and that's it. I had to put my computer in the bathroom to charge it. And the breakfast is a joke. Pre-packaged pastries and instant coffee.... haha! There are great breakfast places nearby. You'll be better off. I find it hilarious how pissed off everyone is on here about their stay. Holes in the bathroom door and wall, pieces missing from the TV remote, no drink glass, public drinking outside, trash and liquor bottles ten feet from a room. If I could give less than 1 star I would. Place is a dump, horrible conditions. My family and I started there one night and under NO circumstances would EVER stay there again. I would rather sleep in my car over this place. Room smelled like mold, doors were broken, no hot water in shower, and after we did shower we noticed that the carpet in the room by the bathroom was soaked wet, like there is a leak in the wall or something. Towels and linens were dirty and had bad smell. Place is a sketchy, feels unsafe. I was charged $187 for one night stay, and when I contacted Holtels.com to complain and request at least a partial refund, I was told that the hotel refused to accommodate us with that. I have accepted the fact that we won't be getting anything back. I just want other people to know the conditions of this place are horrible. Please find another place to stay, for the rates they charge, we could have and should have stayed somewhere else. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB. Wish I had checked Yelp reviews before booking. First of all, Google maps took us to Economy Lodge 3 miles away. Not Rodeway's fault by any mean. But when I called the hotel for directions, they were not able to communicate with me. So I went in to Economy Lodge and got the directions from their concierge. Finally at Rodeway... the property reminded me of a Motel 6. Btw I would never stay at a Motel 6. The door was jammed. My husband did figure out a way to get it to open, but not without a struggle. There was no light above the bathroom sink area. And breakfast? I wouldn't call it breakfast. If I had paid $60 for the room, I wouldn't be complaining. Finally, I attempted to check out by phone. Continental breakfast means a paper cup of oj and a 10 cent Danish from Costco. The nonsmoking room had that lovely stench of a building which should have been leveled twenty years ago. Rife with old fixtures removed, and tissue paper plugging the holes, a lounge chair so filthy I wouldn't sit in it let alone set my bags on it. Rooms are tired, wall paper peeling, furniture broken (I asked them to replace the chair and was screamed at - had to borrow one from the next room to make a business call), sink has brown marks - no plug, bath old and dirty. No plugs near bed so you can't charge phones easily. Internet service really poor and my Zoom call dropped 4 times in 30 minutes. Check-in only through night window with slot - at 4pm! Very unfriendly staff who did not make you feel like a customer, but some unwelcome intrusion into their life. Avoid this place like the plague! Stayed here for one night because we booked on hotels.com a stay at the Econolodge which is directly across the street but we were sent here because apparently they were overbooked, even though we had made reservations weeks in advance. We had two rooms, one was on the first floor and the other one on the 2nd floor. The one downstairs smelled like pee (yuk) and there was mold all over the bathroom along with gigantic spider in the tub. The other room had no working air condition, which we went to the reception and the gentlemen advised us that we would have AC working by the time we came back from dinner... The room was on the small side. I had to side shuffle past the bed and tv stand. The bed was clean and comfortable enough, but lumpy and old. There was no soap, only two half used shampoo bottles. Luckily I have all my own soaps. The fridge/microwave/ and coffee maker we're all unplugged. Kinda weird. The shower had little pressure, bad for even hotel standards. Overall everything is old and outdated. However for a price around $35 it was clean enough to stay again, but not for the inflated event prices ($70). read more

This hotel is awful. We booked a Queen non-smoking room through booking.com. Upon arrival we were told that would not be possible. The first room they tried to pawn off on us was stale with cigarette smoke and the shower head was broken. The second room we were given had broken running boards and horrible beds. This would not have been as awful if it didn't cost us $160 to stay here and the staff wasn't so apathetic to our concerns. Let me be clear: I would rate this zero stars if I could. Words cannot adequately describe my disgust and disappointment towards this establishment. On one hand, I am aware we get what we pay for. However on the other hand, I'd expect a level of cleanliness no matter what the business or price. During our almost week stay, we had bugs fly out at us from the hairdryer when turned on. Insects frequently found around the hotel room. Bags of chips and empty Coke cans in the couch cushion as well as under the beds. And had the shower knob fall off multiple times. If I could give one suggestion when looking at this hotel it would be DONT. Don't book this hotel. Don't compromise your level of standards.
