Warning to Tesla Owners: In October, we brought our 2018 Tesla 3 in after hitting a deer and breaking the coolant system based on a Google search of certified Tesla repair shops in Whatcom County. They diagnosed the broken coolant tubes, repaired the exposed tubes and the car would not re-charge. At this point they advised us that it would need a new battery and they would advise making an insurance claim to total the vehicle. 2 months later, we were denied our claim as Rods is not a certified Tesla shop based on both the insurance company and Tesla's own recommendations. We moved the car to another certified shop in town who will not diagnose since Rod's looked at it first and they won't take the liability. In the meantime, Rods charged our insurance company for storage fees while we, not them, battled with insurance and Tesla. We are left storing the vehicle at our home while we try to find a shop willing to diagnose our vehicle and paying for a replacement vehicle out of pocket. Do not trust this company with your EV under any circumstances. We will be contacting the better business bureau as well. read more

Back at Rod's with my new (now at 30k mile) vehicle. This was our first visit with this vehicle away from the dealer. So glad we brought it in NOW as we are still under warranty. Rod's found an oil leak. They actually take pictures as they are working in the vehicle so they can educate the customer. There is a video on their website and I learned that this is a family business based on HONESTY. That speaks volumes to me. They reviewed the items that the dealer completed at 30k but also recommended an additional item (something that will prevent possible future issues). Easy drop off/pick up before/after hours. Nice waiting room with snacks. Convenient location. We didn't need one but apparently they have loaner vehicles. One thing I really like is that Brittany made us feel like they will be supportive if we have any issues when we go Back to the dealer for the warranty repair issue. Horrible experience. These folks quote prices double and triple of other shops, including the Toyota dealer. They charged $500 for an inspection in which they broke a part on my vehicle and did not find out what the issue was which I brought the vehicle in for. I'm sure they will defend their practices here in a rebuttal. But I've been a sole proprietor (remodeling building contractor) so I know there is a tough situation going on when someone needs info and they just want to find out a price. I could go on a rant to tell the whole story...but will suffice to say that when you price out what the parts actually cost them, The rest of the bill amounts to about $300+ per hour for labor. The guy at the desk could sell ice to eskimos and is very slick about upselling more work & services than are actually needed. After I managed to get my car back from them (yes, it was very like being held hostage), I shopped the work they did to TWO other local reputable shops. Sterling replying to Brittany-Just as there was no honesty at your shop the day of repairs, your reply lacks honesty. The parts you used on our truck retail for $190. + some brake fluid you charged $1129.62. Your email shows that you worked on my vehicle less than 2 hrs. you charged $582.19 labor. At every turn we have asked you to give us information, documents that back up the prices you charged and you have refused to produce any. Since 9-25-20 you have belligerently refused to give us any information Your only justification has been I can stick-it-to-you-pay or I will keep your vehicle and file a lien on it. Dealing with you at the truck pick-up: 1.We had called about the high price of your parts your employee said they were OEM parts and that is why they were so expensive, you used aftermarket parts on my repair.- 2.When we came to pick up the truck and found out you had not used OEM parts but aftermarket parts we asked to see the manufacturer and part numbers of the parts used in my truck repair. You refused to give us this information. 3.You told us you shred all your incoming parts invoices just as soon as the parts arrive so you couldn't show us a parts purchase invoice 4..we asked you to get a copy of your invoice from your supplier you told us your supplier will not give you a copy of the invoice 5. You told us you had no way to lower our bill --the company who supplies your repair order processing programs, set the prices and if we didn't like the prices, we needed to contact them. We asked for the contact information they refused. 6. We asked for the parts manufacturer and parts numbers-you refused 7. We asked to talk to the owner of the business you would not give us his contact information. 8. You threatened to keep my truck and put a lien on it if I didn't pay the bill. I paid the bill at which point I was legally entitled to my vehicle, Brittany refused to give me my truck unless I signed her copy of my invoice. By the way, the signature you coerced out of me by refusing to give me my truck keys is not valid, it is extortion. I wish I would have had a lawyer's legal advice at this point. I did not know I would need it. Summary of how I felt when I left your shop: It made me feel ill to realize I should have had legal assistance to examine every point where I could be misinformed or overcharged. Sadly, I have been naïve enough to believe I didn't need to "lawyer up" to have a local repair shop do a standard brake job. Dealing with the rehashing of my treatment at your shop is very unpleasant, really not worth the effort and time, but I felt that I must share how your system of quoting created a bill priced grossly disproportionate to the true value of the work performed. My repair job was a straight forward simple brake job there were no unforeseen variables that could affect pricing Example of Rod's overcharging : Factory Dealerships are the priciest place for repairs, their location has high overhead, mechanics required by factory to maintain a high level of training and they use OEM parts. The local Nissan Dealer quoted the exact job you did for me @ approx. 1/2 your price. They also said my rotors which you replaced & chgd $700 for parts---should be good and have lots of resurface area, if so their price was approx. 1/3 of yours. I trusted you for an honestly priced repair at my local shop. You looked at me as someone you could swindle and attempt to charge over $1900. for a job that prices out at other local repair shops @ $550. and at the Factory Nissan shop @ $750. To sum it up, they price-gauged me bad and were dishonest. Then they left me with a new problem with my taillights. Now to get into it specifically. They claimed the source of my problem was a missing fuse. (As if fuses just disappear) and charged me for two "diagnostics" to try to figure out why the car wouldn't turn on. So be warned that a diagnostic is not a set of procedures but rather just a flat hour of work THAT COST MORE THAN THE DEALER! They also tried to sell me a battery that is $70 at Costco for $150 and wanted to charge me $50 to install it. These people are the absolute epitome of the cliche dishonest mechanic. I did confront them about my concerns and they did take half off the second diagnostic fee. But now my taillights don't work either. Worth every penny. If you really care about your vehicle, and want service that reflects that.... Rod's is the place to go. Following a 5 day nightmare with another shop in town, I called Rod's and was greeted by Zach. After telling him what I had just been through and how my suzuki grand vitara was behaving, he assured me they would take care of me and get my car back in top shape. I dropped my car off that day and instantly felt more safe and comfortable with these guys than any shop I've ever hired. They did a full inspection with detailed analysis , photos and suggestions , for free . After confirming the EGR valve was likely the source of my vehicle's rough idle and hard start, they took the intake manifold apart, replaced all the gaskets , cleaned the EGR passage tubes and replaced the faulty valve. My car is now running better than it has since I've owned it. The entire process was smooth, Zach is extremely kind and personable. They truly want their customers to be safe on the road and can be trusted 100% to do the job right. I could go on and on about my experience. Took my sons car in to have it checked out because he had a hard time starting it. When he got it started after the 4th try his radio and clock were not working. They did a full inspection on the car. They said it needed a new starter and it would cost $169 for the inspection $300 to install and $440 for the part. We paid the $169 when we picked up the car. We were going to get it fixed when in the next week or so. He drive it for about week then it would not start again. My husband popped the hood and noticed the battery cable was loose. He moved the cable a bit and the car started. He has tightened up the cables on the battery and it has been fine. I called them up and told them that I felt they were trying to rip me off because of they did a full inspection on the car then they should've noticed that. Instead they were trying to get $1000 from me telling me it was a starter when it wasn't. I asked for my $169.00 back and they would not give it back. Instead they said if it makes me feel any better they had fired the technician. Actually that makes me feel worse. DO NOT TRUST THEM Now they are trying to act like they did nothing wrong if I pay $169 for a full inspection you would think their technician would've noticed there's a loose cable on the battery. No they did not notice that because they wanted to get more money from me telling me it was the starter. My husband's not even a mechanic and he noticed a loose cable. read more

I'd give these people 10 stars if I could. They are simply the best. Top quality work, reasonably priced, super friendly, helpful, and everything you could want out of a car shop. They have been working on my Subaru cars for years. And in the rare instance where they got a defective part or something wasn't done to my 100% satisfaction, they went out of their way to make it right. One time Rod even drove up to Squamish, BC to tow my car down to Bellingham for a repair after I my car broke down on a ski trip. I brought in my vehicle, indicating the A/C would work when I started it, but then quit. Rod apparently is experienced and knowledgable, but I don't think he does the work anymore, just management. And he has trained his daughter, who takes the payments, to speak well with the mechanical jargon; I am sure this engenders trust among the women clients. Unfortunately, his actual mechanics are young and friendly, but don't perform as hoped for. I will elaborate. First, I was told that what I needed was added freon; on the bill however, it said 'no diagnostics performed.' I wondered then how they could say what I needed. But, 'as long as it is fixed,' I thought. When I left, the system quit just like before. I brought it back, and they told me I needed a new compressor for $460, only $190 more than what I could buy elsewhere; this is so they would insure it. They said it must be an intermittent problem; of course, they did not test the compressor. Must not have known how. They did say they would cover the cost of the freon with their putting in the new compressor. OK, I might, but wait. At the first, I was also asked about getting an oil change, with part of the proceeds going to help DV shelters. Alright, go ahead. The mechanic put an additive in for 75,000 mile plus, but apparently forgot to minus from the rest of the quantity of oil, so that it was a quart over. I trusted, until I was getting ready for a trip. Oh my! Two times, I can't be silent now. I call in, but Rod is not there on a Saturday, and I get no call back later in the week. Lastly, the 29 point checks seem questionable, where the mechanic says one thing can wait, but the actual checklist says to do it right away. I got a second opinion, and it appears the 29-point checks exaggerate. I gave these people $250 for adding freon that was wasted and an oil change with a quart overfilled. When I relay the problem, I get offered a $460 compressor ($190 more than parts store), and nothing about the overfill. Do you think Rod's establishment is one to trust? If you refer others there, you also get rewarded. It is amazing how many things you can find wrong on a vehicle, and if you have the money for all of them, you'll be taken care just fine. read more

My husband has a 92 Subaru Legacy that we took in about 8 months ago to get some work done. We felt like the service was good and that they were fair. We are large supporters of local business and always are willing to drive a little farther and pay a little more. A second trip was the WORST experience I have ever had with ANY auto repair or business EVER. He called the day before to confirm that he could tow the car in the following morning and have it serviced. The car was dropped off around 10AM and they said that they could get it in that morning. We called a couple of times to see if it had been worked on and didn't hear the diagnostic until after 4:30PM! Initially, they told us that the part that we needed was $650 and $100 to install it. They then said that there were a couple of other issues in that same area and they could do it ALL for $650. THAT MAKES NO SENSE. We asked why the ONE part that we needed fixed costs so much. They didn't really have an answer so we told them we would have to get back to them. We then called all around Whatcom County and found that the same part was $250. When we called them and said that they we had found the same part for the a much lower price, they responded that this was a special part that had to be ordered from a dealer and that is why it was so expensive. HOWEVER they offered to look around for a used part and it would only be $150 for the part and $100 for the installation. I directly asked him if $250 would be our total and he said yes. The next morning he called and said that they had found the used part, and they were ready to install it. He then mentooned that the total was going to be $400. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! When I asked him how $250 became $400 he said that the initial diagnostic was $100 bucks as well. Exhausted at this point we agreed to just have the thing fixed. They said that it would be done in about an hour. I told them to please make sure they call my husband as soon as it was done. By 4:00PM we still hadn't heard anything so we decided to call. They said the car had been done since 11AM! When we got the shop this evening the girls at the front desk were moderately professional. I expressed to them our frustrations with the communication and how no one had called to tell us the car was ready. They told us communication wasn't "Jerry's strongpoint". Really? We also brought up the difference in the prices we were given here versus when we called around to other shops. It appeared that she was looking up some items online and she said that the prices were similar to theirs $450. UMM... WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ORIGINAL $650?!??! I then asked if we could please have the part that they had replaced. Not demanded, but asked politely, so that we could reference it in the future. One of the girls at the front desk said that she would ask him to take a look. She went back into the shop 2 times and said he was going to look through the garbage. We moved aside because another woman had come in to pick up her car. When we stepped aside "Jerry" came out and made it clear that he was not going to look the the garbage anymore. That he is up to his eyeballs in work and that we can go back there if we want the part so bad. Also stating- If you want proof that we fixed it how about it didn't run when you dropped it off and it runs now!! I have never in my life been spoken to with such disrespect from a place of business. I will never go back to business and I will never recommend it to ANYONE. There actions were completely uncalled for and unprofessional. This was a bad business move to treat customers this way, especially when that customer is me, a woman who you just disrespected and now is going to share the news with all of her Whatcom County connections. They quoted the woman in line before me $150 just to read the codes from her computer, something you could get done at NAPA for free, and something they did for me at my last oil change for free, without even being asked. They mocked her when she stormed off. Then they wanted me to pay $150 just to look at my sunroof which wouldn't close. Just to look at it, not to fix it. I told them that this was ridiculous and left. I got my sunroof fixed at Andy's Sunroof for $80 and it works great. read more

Had my fuel pump replaced here, located under the back seat. When I got the car back, I went to grab something in the back floorboard, I put my weight on the backseat to lean down and the back seat came loose - I found the nuts and bolts in the floorboard. They replaced the fuel pump but forgot to put the rest of the car back together. I called them and told them but never received a call back. This was a $1000+ job, given I had them do a tune up and a dye test. I would not recommend going here if you want your car back in one piece. read more

We had my daughter's car serviced at Rod's last May for the air conditioner that was not working. He let me know the previous owner did not keep up the maintenance on the car and it needed more service to get the records up to date to the amount of $1233.84.This week I had our Honda tech closer to home check the brakes and review the service performed by Rod's. Turns out Rod's had taken advantage of the situation and not only overcharged us but they performed service that made no sense on a 2008 Honda Civic. My daughter brought her car in to repair a problem related to starting. Rods replaced the starter for more than $500, but then said that that $500 repair didn't really fix the problem because something was wrong with the "multiplex" wiring under the dash. They wanted more money. We took the car to a different mechanic who said not only were we overcharged for the starter, there was nothing wrong with any wiring. This confirmed my suspicion about Rods. In my opinion, they are not an honest repair shop and they are just looking for ways to inflate their bill and get more money out of people for nothing. I needed an old beater dodge grand caravan serpentine belt issue resolved. Rod's automotive went to infinity and beyond to dig into why the belt kept slipping. Yhet They dug and scraped and fould an old washer "fix" from a competitor who put in a cheap fix. Had our first experience with Rod's Japanese Auto Care, and so far, I'm pretty happy. Went in for a new head gasket and the check engine light. They called to confirm the issue, and had the work done in less then 2 days. They even paid for a loaner car for the two days because their current shop loaner car was being used. They have competitive pricing and extremely EXCELLENT customer service. They went above and beyond to make sure I had all my car service needs met. I found them to be punctual, intelligent and honest, a pretty rare combination in the auto-shop world! Overall, a VERY well run business. Will be back in a heartbeat! I've been taking my trucks to Rods for over 10years. They "were" the best small shop around back then. Things have most definitely changed since then. I understand that when repairing used cars, there is always going to be some, let's say, uncertainty when it comes to repairs. What's going on at RJA these days may border on fraud. Brief history of recent repairs gone awry: I had a clutch replaced and they didn't resurface the fly wheel. Had to take it back because it drove like shit. They fixed it for "free". Who doesn't take the time to fix a minor detail after all the labor costs to get in there. Works as intended now. I had a steering rack replaced right around the same time and they didn't replace the old bushings with 135k miles on them! This wasn't an issue known to me until recently when the alignment shop couldn't do the work because of the bushings. I went back to Rods and they wanted to charge me almost $500 for a set of $20 bushings that should have been replaced when I had the rack done 14 months earlier! They did do the repair for "free" but charged me for $150 alignment. This is where it gets super shady. First, that's about double most shops for a FEA. Second, I got no printout of the before and after. All I got was this "screen shot" with some numbers on it. No car ID, no before, no after. Just camber, caster and toe. The car pulls really hard to the left. Was told by them it's the brakes. Nothing wrong with the brakes at all. So after talking to other shops trying to pinpoint the problem, I take it to another shop and get a real alignment and it steers straight and true! My screenshot alignment numbers were no where near the other shops before numbers! Makes me wonder if the screenshot was my truck, even! Come to find out after talking with the other shop owners (trying to figure out this new pulling problem I have) Logan (recently hired) has a reputation for running customers cards through his cell phone and not billing the shop! Makes me wonder about my "alignment". It's too bad to see a great shop treat a loyal customer like shit. read more

I will not go into all the details, and I rarely ever leave reviews, but I just must do so on this one. Mechanic shops need to be honest or risk losing paying customers. I totally agree with other 1 star reviews that they are dishonest and waaayyy overcharge. They gave me a quote that was $350 more than the dealership, which is usually the most expensive. They also told me yes absolutely you need this done at 100K but then I looked at Toyota maintenance schedule and nope it's at 120K. I'm not saying they do bad work, but I wouldn't trust them after this and I definitely won't take my car there again. I'll pay fair prices for good quality work and I do all my regular maintenance so they lost money on me for sure. I have no interest in bashing any honest business people, speaking to a manager, etc. I just want consumers to know the reality of a place so they can make the best choice for them. I took my car in to Rods cause I had a noise on my passenger side wheel . They said I had to do a diagnostic, it cost me $90 dollars. After the diagnostic they gave me a list of around $4,000 dollars the car needed work on. Which is bonkers cause my car drove great, other than the noise on the tire area. But they did say it would cost $892. dollars to fix right drive axle. I took my car in to another auto place got a second opinion they said Rod made the wrong diagnostic and replaced a front wheel bearing for $435.00 dollars that fixed the problem. Went back to Rod's for a refund of $90 dollars for making a wrong diagnostics. They said they needed their mechanic to put their stethoscope on the car, before refund. Forget it didnt want to waste my time, that was about 4 months ago and car is still running great and no noise. I gave them a star cause they are very nice and friendly people, but I would not go back there again even if they paid me. read more

I am so happy I was referred to this business for my auto repairs. I needed a major overhaul on my Subaru Outback and they walked me right through it, step by step. I first worked with Logan when I brought in the car for a diagnosis. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke specifically about their process, offering me a loaner while the work was being done. When I called to hear the verdict, Brittany walked me through the long list of repairs that were needed. She was amazingly knowledgeable about cars and could tell me exactly what would be done, why it should be done, and what the service would cost. I particularly appreciated the itemized list of repairs needed, sent via email, so I could review them, along with photos of the problem areas with commentary. They also separated out for me the necessary work, along with work that could be done at another time. The job was performed very quickly, and I was back in my car within 48 hours. I was very appreciative of their family oriented business. The lobby was equipped with couches, coffee, cookies, magazines, a play area with toys for the kids, and a television going for those who wait. As I left, Logan offered his hand, thanking me for choosing Rod's. When I arrived at my car door, I looked inside to find a lovely basket full of locally sourced goodies as a thank you for my business. I am always hesitant to take my car to a mechanic. Hoping to find one that wouldn't try to fleece me, I took my car to Rod's based on reviews and recommendations from other Subaru owners in Bellingham. The service manager Brittnay is an absolute star. Very helpful, knowledgable, and remembers details about my previous visit. She sent an email telling me what is good on my vehicle, what will need work in the future, and what they recommend me taking care of ASAP. They included pictures on the email as well. My car is an older Subaru, so it needs some love to keep it running in tip top shape. I really feel great taking her in to Rod's. I have since taken my car on a few long distance trips and I have 100% confidence it's going to get me there and back without issue. Rod's charges a fair price in my opinion.
