Between the bugs indoors, the restroom issue, the lackluster service, and the disappointing food, this will not be a place we return to.

Upland Brewing Company is a local brewery that started in Bloomington, Indiana in 1998. Now, they have a number of popular restaurants/pubs across Indiana. The building, built in 1871, served as the Pump House supplying water to the city of Columbus, Indiana. The Pump House faced financial, water and quality challenges over the years, but was instrumental in industrial growth of the city. The Pump House operated until 1950, when the city moved to well water. The Pump House served a number of businesses and organizations since 1950. Upland opened the pub in 2016. We were greeted and promptly seated in the bar when we entered. Our server/bartender, Jess, was attentive and friendly. Several other servers also engaged with us, as well. One brought me a fascinating pamphlet describing the history of the building because I was curious. We arrived in time to sample their 3:00 - 5:00 pm Happy Hour. (I love a good Happy Hour.) We ordered Dragonfly IPAs, which went down smooth on a hot summer day. We also enjoyed a couple of sliders from the Happy Hour menu. The Bad Elmer's Fav burger was good with lots of bacon but my favorite was the Hoosier Tenderloin. I should note that much of the food is locally sourced. The building has a large dining room, bar, private dining, private event room, and a fabulous patio with river views. The landscaping is gorgeous. Their signature beers are available for purchase to go along with the logo shirt and a few other logo items. I highly recommend a visit. The food and beer are first class. No problem, we each ordered one of those. Some time passed and I saw our server come out onto the patio, look at us, and promptly spin around to go back inside. A couple minutes later he returned with our waters and an apology about the beers taking a long time because "the bartender was too busy talking." I got more of the impression that he forgot to put in our order at all, hence the quick turnaround to get waters when he realized he never came back to our table. We put in our food orders in the meantime- I ordered the Reuben sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband ordered the roast beef sandwich with sweet potato fries. Drinks came out eventually and were huge/ice cold, which was nice. The food also came out within 10 minutes, which we had initially been happy about because we were so hungry and we still had an hour drive back to Indy. However, my Reuben sandwich had huge, thick chunks of meat vs thinly sliced beef and it was extremely hard to take bites of and took a long time to chew. I had to keep using my hands to rip pieces off the sandwich. There was also hardly any sauerkraut on it. My husband's roast beef sandwich had very little roast beef and absolutely no flavor, but was supposed to have a kick from the horseradish sauce. The sweet potato fries were good though, they just had a little too much salt on them. Overall, we had mixed reviews with our visit. Our beers were only $5.50 each, so that was a crazy good price. Not sure if it's just for trivia night or always like that. Several times throughout our visit we kept getting hit with the smell of cigarette smoke because the patio is off the main sidewalk and no one monitors that people are actually far enough away from the building. Super unpleasant. This is definitely a fun place to meet friends for drinks, but I'd pass on the sandwiches and see if other menu options are better.

I just wanted a really good omelet. That's it. The trashy looking waitress with the extremely loud booming voice that carried for blocks around, with tattoos all over her said their cook makes the best omelets. I believed her until I got it and pulled orange and black cat hairs out of the cheese. She got super defensive when I showed her. I said does your cook have cats? She wouldn't answer, so that's a yes. That's when the cook walked in a side door from smoking. Greasy, greasy, greasy. He had a hat and bandana on that looked like he's been wearing it for decades without a wash. Has a sleeveless shirt on where his sweat can drip all in our food. God, he looked so nasty. I cant believe you hire people like that to cook for people. So gross. Someone hose that chubby, greasy little feller down and for gods sake, lint roll him after.
