this was unfortunately one of the worst restaurant experiences i've had in chicago. the portions were tiny, the food was overpriced, and the flavors were underwhelming. we stopped by for brunch and had the fried chicken & waffles and battered roister chicken sandwich, and everything was mediocre. the chicken was small and dry, and even a basic side of two eggs was $8. overall, it felt like overpriced fast food, and the plating was very basic. plus, there's an automatic 20% service charge added. the only nice thing was the space. we dined outside, but the ambience inside looked good too! i definitely wouldn't recommend this place. read more

We were in Chicago for a couple of days in June and Roister came highly recommended. Our group of 6 was seated for an early dinner around 5:30PM. I loved that it was a completely open kitchen that I could peek at throughout the meal and see how the chefs were operating. The aged cheddar rilettes were 11/10. I'm still thinking about the bread. We also got oysters, roasted duck, smoked cauliflower, and the roister chicken. Though the duck was different from the traditional Peking style, I still really enjoyed the flavours. I wish all iterations of this dish came with scallion pancakes. We ended off the meal with the Cookies and Milk. I wasn't sure what to expect from its name, but this dessert was delicious. Overall, the quality of the restaurant was apparent in its unique menu items and level of service. I would definitely return the next time I'm in the city! read more

Wow all these great reviews, we were not that impressed. Started with the ricotta mushroom toast with chestnut, blue oyster. There was so much ricotta you could not taste anything else. There was SO much ricotta, not enjoyable. I had the Cesar salad with added crispy chicken wing. The salad had so much dressing it was utterly gross. The wing had no flavor. In a high powered city with loads of culinary wonders this place IMO has found a spot for themselves and can be proud of what they are doing. From the best I ever had roast duck, Octopus, Agnolotti, Hamachi collar nothing was a miss and everything tasted elevated, refined, full of flavor. This is a really late review, so I'm sure what I have to say echoes so many people's opinions. It was a bit of a trek getting to Roister due to all the construction happening on their street back then. But the food, the vibe, and the top notch service was all worth it. The food was sublime. The dishes were made of ingredients that one would never think could complement each other, but their magical kitchen performs feats of culinary alchemy. Pasta with clams and mint? A chocolate bar made with duck fat? And those oysters that haunt my dreams to this day...I'll never be the same after that meal. When my hubby expressed how big a fan he was of Grant Achatz, the head chef invited him into the kitchen to observe their operations. So he stood there as they prepared dinner for all the diners. That experience is something that he talks about to this day. All in all, we had a wonderful time at Roister, and we will definitely come back to Chicago and plan our vacation around this restaurant. Roister, part of the Alinea group and located in the heart of Fulton Market, features incredible roasted meats, including a roast duck dish (a unique take on Peking duck) that is absolutely spectacular. Honestly, their duck is much better tasting and cooked than a lot of the typical Peking duck places you find elsewhere in the city, such as down south in Chinatown or up north in Argyle. Plus, they refill pancakes to your heart's desire - which usually doesn't happen at other establishments! We were visiting from Atlanta and still can't stop talking about how delicious this food was! It was a little confusing finding the entrance but so worth it! I am a person that likes sauces so I asked for a side of ranch and they did not have any but the chef said he would make it from scratch. That was some of the best ranch I've had Food-We ordered Roasted tomato soup, French dip À La St. Clair Supper Club, fried chicken sandwich and for dessert the cheesecake and cookies and milk. Atmosphere - We sat at the chef's counter and it was so cool to see the food being prepared and how encouraging the chef was to everyone in the kitchen. My boyfriend and I went here for brunch and I loved it! We started with the cheddar rilettes, which was easily the highlight of the meal. I would go back solely for these. They were buttery, the rolls were soft and perfectly salted. We also got some espresso martinis which were fantastic. I ordered the mushroom toast. I loved the cheese on top, and I am a huge mushroom fan so I really enjoyed it. The toast was a little hard to cut and chew however. We also got the sliced potatoes as a side and they were so crispy! Made reservations to meet up with a friend for dinner at Roister. We arrived on time at this Fulton Market spot. Host grabbed our coats to check and we were led to our table quickly. As others have described, it is very loud. An open kitchen and fun music, expect a festive evening. We sat down and wished we had a bigger group to order more food. Table next to us had a large group and had 1 of everything it seemed. We ordered way too much food for 2. Daily Selection of Meats & Cheeses-Sunny Ridge, Linedeline, Haus Select Cheddar, Soppressata Picante, Coppa Picante, Salami di manzo Cheese vendors were all from Wisconsin. Roister Chicken-fried thigh, roasted breast, chamomile, gravy & hot sauce Blackened Asparagus-hard boiled egg, mint, beef mignonette Robuchon style Mash Potatoes Sea Bass The standout was the Roister Chicken and the sauces. Chicken was moist and the breading was flavorful and crunchy. I kept going back and forth as to whether I liked the gravy or hot sauce more. My favorite restaurant in Chicago, hands down. The fried chicken is a MUST if you haven't had it. It's full of flavor and crispy. The rigatoni with crab is a second runner up for the best dish Roister has to offer. The prawn is also really good, but is not as filling as the other dishes. The prime rib was tender and cooked deliciously. You can't go wrong ordering anything off of Roister's menu! We always took our visitors here and every time it's a hit and Roister is their favorite meal of the entire trip that they still think about! I live in NYC now, and there's no restaurants here that are doing new-American cuisine like Roister. read more

Roister comes with high expectations being a part of the Alinea group and formerly being a one-star restaurant. Overall, Roister is a great experience. Food and service are above the quality of many other restaurants. However, in my opinion, some items are too highly priced (especially the brioche bread), and you can receive better service at some other restaurants. That's kind of my takeaway from here - everything is great, but nothing particularly stands out, especially if you come expecting one-star quality. The exception is the pricing of the wine menu, which has a diverse and impressive selection without upcharging as much as its competitors. My only other complaint is that the volume of music is too high. My table struggled to ever hear our waitress, despite her repeating herself for us. If you have been eyeing Roister, I still recommend you give it a try. 4.5/5. read more

We came here on a fluke after a night out at a nearby restaurant overall we really enjoy the food. I thought it was pricey for some of the entrees. However they did have a 9 course tasting menu for a $110 per person. I believe that also included a cocktail. On this occasion we tried the short rib gnudi and fry bread with cheese sauce. What I like about the restaurant is that you can see the thoughtfulness put into making the food and the menu. I appreciate it that if you sign up the bar you could literally see them prepare aver dish and would fire the chicken right in front of your eyes. We arrived a little late, but promptly whisked away to our seating at the hearth. Service was excellent, I appreciated the NA cocktail options. I tried the Santo Domingo that was recommended and it was delicious. We have been here several times, it is a solid upscale dining experience in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. They had made some changes to the menu, which they do seasonally, so a little sad to not see the steak tartar because it's the best in the city. But we were happy to try 3 brand new to us dishes: eggplant, hamachi collar, pastrami short rib. All delicious, could have had a second eggplant it exceeded my expectations for a veg dish. The pastrami short rib as a whole is sweeter --would have liked a little pickled something, bitter green something to balance the dish a bit more, but still delicious. And the pastrami drooling just thinking about it, tender and very flavorful. We ended our meal with the basque cheesecake, the last couple times we have been there we have gotten and my lord I love it. The used to serve it as a whole round mini cake, versus a slice of a bigger cake, I prefer the previous iteration solely because you get a drier, denser "edge", "crust" which is my favorite. I can see the slice appealing to the majority of people though, because the center of a slice of cake will be creamier/moist. Team dry cheesecake right here. We'll be regulars as long as they'll have us. read more

Ambiance/ Decor The ambiance is what I notice right away when I walked into the restaurant. It was a Saturday night and very lively out. The restaurant was full of people, the bar area as well. The decor was beautiful upon entering the open concept restaurant. Service We checked in with our host and were seated within 2 minutes. Once seated our waiter came to our table to take our drink order very quickly. He was incredibly nice and very thorough. Our waiter checked on us many times throughout the evening. Bringing us the drinks we requested each time super quick. We orders a small plate app to share and our entrees as we opted for the most popular items. Food Roister has a lot of hype behind it, I think due to its Michelin star status. The hype is well deserved because my goodness, everything was absolutely delicious. I don't have one critique about any of the food items we selected. They were all superb, so fresh and flavorful, hot and juicy. Perfectly tender and chewy. With the fish dish, my love noted that in his culture with the way they prepare fish, it seems to be a similar technique. The fish was phenomenal. The chicken was so tasty, way better than the usual restaurant chicken you would receive with a side of waffles or what have you... it was mind blowing. The duck was so tender and delicious, juicy, a mouthful of flavors exploding. You really cannot go wrong with any of the items. I cannot wait to go back. Side note-- we ordered a lot of food and had to take some leftover home. They were still phenomenal the next day...crazy right? Must be witchcraft Drinks The drinks were served quickly and very crisp clear flavors. They were tasty, but I'll be honest not super memorable. I think they have good options, but for a Michelin star restaurant, I'd like it to be a little more memorable or unique. Not to complain at all because obviously it was all lovely. Dessert Unfortunately because we ordered two entrees and two small plates, and four drinks..we were absolutely stuffed and could not get dessert. But that is on the list for next time. I've already sent a thank you email to the Alinea Group for our experience on our wedding anniversary, which probably seems over the top, but hear me out -- We chose Roister for our tenth anniversary because we wanted a bit of a fancy staycation and Roister's menu looked approachable while also mostly accommodating my ever growing list of food allergies. When we made the reservation for the chef's counter experience, my husband alerted them to my allergies. I fully expected to have to skip a couple of courses -- that's been the solution at other restaurants. Instead, I had the *most* delightful experience. If you have food allergies, you already know that dining out can be a source of anxiety or frustration. When we were seated, we overheard the chefs unknowingly talking about me. There was some confusion about another table that shared an allergy, and a chef was running through all of their planned changes to the menu with a server. In the end, they realized they were talking about two different people, but I was left with absolute confidence that they were taking this seriously and I was not going to be treated as an inconvenience. Everything we had was solidly good, though of course some things were better than others (as you would expect with that many dishes!). My favorites were the cheddar rillettes that were subbed in for mussels in the first course, the smoked ricotta gnudi in an onion broth, the fried chicken, and the basque cheesecake with smoked oranges. I probably could have skipepd the tomato watermelon salad and the gazpacho - they were both good but not the shining stars of the evening. In general, flavors of dishes were balanced and the meal flowed well. Staff were attentive in general, making wine recommendations and checking on our experience. It was a little startling to have so many people checking in, but we got used to it. And the seats at the counter were a fun way to engage with the food and the prep. I am so grateful to the chefs and servers for making our anniversary not only delicious but also safe. It's one we'll remember for sure! P.S. Dined solo and seated me at the bar (at the very back). The couple that sat beside me were gracious and awesome so we ended up sharing our entire dinner solidify this 4 star meal. Fried chicken lived up to its expectation. Surprisingly we really loved the twice - friend potato wedges. The pork main course was phenomenal, gold that melts in your mouth & flavourful. Joseph who shared this pork dish with me found the glaze / sauce a tad too sweet. We were very lucky and had great service behind the bar. Was it Mike? Finally experienced Roister and it truly exceeded all of my (high) expectations. We had a 6:30pm reservation on Sunday evening for our first anniversary, and celebrating at Roister was the cherry on top of a perfect day! The place was already fairly busy when we arrived, but we were seated right away. I love the layout of the restaurant. The kitchen is definitely the centerpiece, with 10+ chefs working side by side around a large island. Seeing the chefs create these beautiful dishes was such a treat. The passion and love while cooking was very evident and fun to watch. There is a long bar facing the kitchen, which I believe is for the tasting menu. Everything came out so quick despite how busy the restaurant was. To drink, I ordered the viva la vida which was a tequila, mezcal, red bell pepper, charred pineapple, lime, and habanero. And yes, it was as good as it sounds. Has a strong kick though, so be warned if you're not a fan of spice! My husband ordered a bourbon based drink that he really loved. You can tell a lot of thought goes into the cocktails, and we thoroughly enjoyed them! We started with the brioche and shishito peppers. The brioche is served with a bouquet of herbs that you dip in oil to spread around the bread. Kind of fun, very delicious. The shishito peppers were blistered to perfection and so flipping good. I couldn't stop eating them. My husband also got the tomato soup which was quite the presentation with a huge puff pastry sitting on top of the bowl. He loved it. I was so torn on what to get for my main because everything looked and sounded so good. I ended up going with the salmon and I have no regrets! My husband got the famous fried chicken, so I was still able to give that a try and MAN was it good. Spent the better half of my Friday evening at Roister, one of Chef Achatz's dining experiences within The Alinea Group. The evening was exceptional from beginning to end. I highly recommend sitting at the chef's table which gives a Birds Eye view of the magic happening in the open concept kitchen. Light and refreshing, the warm compressed melon with jamón ibérico was the perfect start to the myriad of seafood (Branzino, mussels, Rockefeller oysters) we indulged along with the duck wings and notorious Roister chicken. Swung by for brunch recently as me and a very good friend decided this would be our destination before she took off for LA for the summer. We got a 10:45 reservation on Tock as she had to get here on the early side of brunch. Got a patio seat as it was a very nice summer morning, but I did get to take a look on the inside and it was pretty nice. Menu was full of delicious looking items but I went ahead with the Fried Chicken & Waffles which included honey butter and whiskey maple syrup. The chicken thigh was good but may have been a little over seasoned as it tasted very salty. Washed it all down with water as well as the Cactus Flower Cocktail which includes one of my favorite spirits, mezcal. The cocktail included blanco tequila, hibiscus infused mezcal, xila mezcal liqueur, limes, grapefruit cordial and pamplemoisse la croix...very refreshing! Our server David was a pretty good dude and very professional and accommodating. They include a 20% service charge automatically and stamp it on the receipt in red so you aren't caught off guard. I dropped in with some coworkers for a quick lunch since this place is relatively close to the office. We walked in and requested to sit outside since the weather was nice, so we were escorted to our table. We were quickly presented with some menus and provided with water. I quickly noticed that the lunch menu was not large, but the drink menu and, in particular, the wine menu was pretty extensive. I was pretty impressed by the wine menu and actually took pictures of it to study a bit later. I ordered the chicken sandwich, and one of my coworkers ordered the French Dip sandwich. The French Dip looked amazing when it came out, and my coworker mentioned that it was very good. I would 100% order that if I came back for lunch. My chicken sandwich was perfectly crispy, with a nice bite from the hot sauce and an interesting flavor from the chamomile mayo. The sandwich was perfectly constructed with just enough sauce to keep it from being dry, but not enough to take away from the crispiness of the chicken. This is one of the best chicken sandwiches I've eaten. The service was also excellent. I would definitely return here for lunch, and I am really interested in their dinner offerings. read more

I've had a bad luck of the draw with restaurants lately. Sadly the food and service was awful here. My team and I made a reservation weeks in advance and most of us weren't impressed. First, starting with service. I have a ton of food allergies so I tried to be prepared - I emailed with their team back and forth about my food allergies prior to coming and they sounded like they could help accommodate. The waitress knew our reservation had a food allergy beforehand and I spoke with her directly, but there was a big lack of knowledge as to what ingredients/potential allergens the dishes had despite having emailed with their team prior. Maybe this is too much for me to expect but with most other restaurants, they're able to provide recommendations or chat with the chef to help accommodate to dietary restrictions. I basically got an unseasoned steak for dinner that was not good at all (my friends also ordered the normal steak with the buttery sauce and were not fans). On the topic of service, we had reservations at 8 (made weeks ago) and weren't seated until 8:20ish. Not a huge deal but was frustrating on top of the other items. Our waitress also had attitude - she ended up ending her shift midway through so we got another waitress. The second one was super friendly. I also had a blonde hair in my cocktail (none of us on my team are blonde). They also messed up a few dishes so the manager ended up comping one of them which was nice. Beyond that the food was not impressive. I did like the asparagus as it was charred and seasoned well. Also liked my cocktail (got the jungle one - was sweet and tasty). I soo wanted to love this place. Expectations are always high with a Michelin vetted dining experience but I found it to be a little underwhelming honestly. In all fairness, I don't think I ordered the best dish. I am sure there are better offerings than the blue crab rigatoni but I am a pasta girl first and everything else after. It wasn't bad per se, but it also didn't knock my socks off. I think the sauce was just a tad rich for my liking because I can usually clean a plate but found myself stopping about mid way through this one. With that being said, I did get to taste the grilled Mediterranean sea bass which was kind of divine actually. I think if I had ordered that instead this would easily be a 4 star review. Our table also had the market oysters which were fabulous but not a meal does that make. I found the service to be fair but not necessarily amazing which is a letdown for a restaurant of this caliber. Adore the setup of this place though! Roister probably doesn't need any more Yelp! reviews. I mostly wanted to post here as a thank you to the Roister staff for a truly outstanding experience. From the phenomenal food to the classy, knowledgeable , and friendly service, you gave us our best night out in a long time. First, the service. The front of house team here is smart, friendly, and worked together seamlessly. We felt like we really had a team taking care of us. A fun team with a lot of class, yet not one bit stuffy. I was particularly impressed by the gentleman who took our order - I had several questions while trying to decide what to choose from the menu, and his answers showed he was both extremely knowledgeable about the dishes and sincerely interested in helping me make a great choice (which he did!). Next, the food. While this is known as Chef Achatz's "casual" place, our food was both comforting and executed to perfection. We ordered the mussels and root beer spiced short ribs as our mains, plus the roasted mushrooms. Everything was outstanding and, amazingly to us, the portions were generous for all even though the mussels were a starter and mushrooms a side. While we thoroughly enjoyed everything, the short ribs were the star of the show. I was a little skeptical about the flavor profiles of a root beer sauce and vanilla mashed potatoes, but it was an amazing dish that I will never forget. The sauce alone was a thing of beauty in its depth of flavor and shiny smoothness. We were very full but couldn't help ourselves from ordering dessert. We chose the butterscotch pudding and Basque cheesecake, both of which made for a great end to a great meal. The cheesecake was really special, and was made even better by the addition of dried oranges. We're already thinking about what excuse we can use to return. Back to Roister. We LOVE coming here when we visit Chicago. It's truly become one of our favorite places to come and dine. This visit was during an arctic freeze and the big omicron wave so the place was a little empty for a Sunday night. Nonetheless, food was great, service was casual but excellent. Always recommend this place and always have a great meal, particularly the fried chicken. We enjoyed fresh Pacific Northwest oysters with a habanero vinegarette. (If you're sensitive to spicy things, like my wife is, perhaps request that on the side otherwise you may not eat the oysters.) I've been coming here for a few years now and ordered take out a decent amount of times throughout the pandemic. Today, Yelp told me I was the "dutchess of roister" aka I guess I just check in here on Yelp more than the average person. My usual rating is 4-5 stars as I generally get the chicken and waffles (very sweet but yummy) but today's service was quite subpar and I'd put them at a 3 this time around... Up until today I've always come with 1-3 people, so seating has never been an issue but it was real rough with 8 people. I was actually the one who recommended us coming here for brunch-which I now regret. My friend and I booked 2 tables of 4 separately at the same time online successfully. No where did it specify if we booked an inside or outside table on tock or the email. FYI They require a 10 dollar deposit per person that goes to your meal. No biggie-my friend and I figured we could just all sit inside and maybe get tables close to each other. To our surprise, one of our tables was inside and one of our tables was booked outside. This is where the not so fun experience began. I checked my email and nothing stated where seating would be inside or outside. The hostess daria was not nice and was pretty rude to be honest. She told me to wait while she tried to figure things out-so wait we did! Our initial hope was that we could all sit inside as it was pretty cold-they have about 2 heaters... so if you're not right under them, it's game over. 55 degrees in Chicago in the shade being far from heaters is not nice for brunch. Eventually, she asked if we wanted to sit outside. Daria made it implied that if we sat outside, we could all sit next to each other. So we initially agreed, but then realized this was NOT the case. We would be sitting pretty far from each other at 2 different tables of 4 in the cold. When asked if we could move them together (for friendship) , they said no. Again surprisingly cold today and the four guys said they would brace the cold. One guy had only a short sleeve on. Us gals came inside and got seated at a table and then after a few minutes, we noticed the the guys came back inside. Turns out it was also super windy and the wind blew over their water and even spilled on one of the guys' pants. Thank goodness for Allison who helped them sit inside at the bar inside. Very thankful for Allison after all this back and forth with Daria. Personally, this whole situation was ridiculously stressful and although I like the chicken and waffles, the guys who ordered the sandwich said "Popeyes is better"-ouch. Also, another general complaint was that the mimosas portion size was not generous. Overall Bummer. A very just ok experience at Roister. read more

The fried chicken dish was fantastic, the best fried chicken I've ever had. The pastrami short rib and broccoli dishes were fine but quite overpriced. The short rib had four tiny bites for $45. My cocktail was good. Ambiance is nice. Overall, too expensive, but maybe worth trying once for the chicken. read more

Been on my list for years and happy I finally went!! This place is so so crowded. They sat us at the bar, which was not great. It was so tight and uncomfortable. We were able to move to a different area finally Aged cheddar: GET THIS. You won't regret it Kale Caesar: you deft taste it being roasted. But it was bland and I had to order more dressing Liver mousse donut: deft worth a try and meant to be shared with how decadent it is Fried chicken: just ok.
