Stop! If you're looking for a roofing company that prizes craftsmanship, respects your time, and won't gouge you, you've found it. Do not pass Go; do not collect $200. It doesn't get any better than Roland Slate. Every person on the team -- from the owner to sales to accounting to the guys in the field -- is exceptionally courteous and professional and their workmanship itself is phenomenal. Our 1881 Victorian is on the National Registry of Historic homes and needed some repairs on a particularly tricky section of its slate roof that had been badly patched years ago and had begun to leak. As we began to look for someone to do the repairs, Roland Slate differentiated themselves from their competitors from the very beginning. Out of the half dozen or so quotes that we got, Roland Slate was the only company that actually got on the roof to see what the problem was. They spent time to thoroughly investigate the problem area to make sure that the diagnosis and needed repairs were done right the first time; it didn't feel like they were rushing to get to the next job.  I really appreciate how detailed their quote was. It outlined the process for each section of the repair including methods and specific materials (16oz vs 20oz copper, 50/50 solder, etc.), even down to the brand of sealant they'd use. If that sounds overwhelming to you or you're not comfortable with the technical terms, don't worry: a few hours after they sent the quote and I'd had a chance to look it over, they gave me a call to walk me through it, line by line. Slate repair can be expensive, so it's very reassuring to have a solid grasp of the work that'll be done. Several of the other quotes I got from reputable companies were only a few sentences that essentially amounted to "we will repair the roof" and an arbitrary-sounding (and often enormous) fee. Part of the Roland Slate team's willingness to answer my many questions comes from their obvious love for old houses and buildings. If you own an old house or grew up in one, you know that their maintenance and idiosyncrasies, though sometimes frustrating, are the very same things that work their way into your heart. Old houses have a personality of their own and earn a meaningful presence in your life. These guys know that. It was clear from the get-go that they appreciate how special these places can be and it was fun to geek out with them over the crazy details that drew my wife and me to the house in the first place. When I went to meet them outside after they had cleaned everything up (they left no trace other than remarkable work), I found them admiring the fretwork and joinery on the front porch. The respect and care with which they worked on our home brought our family invaluable peace of mind.   It's raining as I write this and it brings me joy and comfort to know that not only is my house safe and dry, but that Roland Slate's work will last long, long after I'm gone.  While the work they did for me was exclusively slate, I'd trust them with any and everything on my roof and will be calling them for some repairs on our asphalt shingles and chimney flashing a little later down the line. After being frustrated for over three weeks by roofing companies who didn't show for inspection appointments or weren't licensed to repair our leaking roof or offered estimates without inspecting our roof, at breakfast one Sunday after Church my wife was looking at the bulletin and said, "Why don't we call this roofing company? They have advertised in the bulletin for more years than we have been members of the parish!" That Monday she called them. The next day Tuesday the inspector Nick from Roland Slate Service Co., Inc. came to our home, inspected the roof, and the next day Wednesday visited us. He showed us over 50 photos he had taken while on the roof, pinpointed damaged areas, explained how this caused our leak, in addition to just the age of the roof and deterioration. He explained the materials and costs of a total roof replacement with state of art slate materials and how the company could help finance the balance after our down-payment and offered a number of discounts. He even told us they would patch the roof within a few days to hold us over until construction took place in late January or early February 2024. His knowledge, experience, and manner sold us and we signed the contract and the finance agreement that evening. Two days later the crew arrived and patched the roof. When the patch didn't help one phone call to them got them to reevaluate our job and upgrade it to critical and in a week the crew arrived and in two days our new, guaranteed roof was fully installed, well before the original installation date. The Roland team cleaned up the debris and hauled it away. Our interactions with everyone at Roland from initial phone call to their follow-up call after completion were excellent, always warm and friendly, and highly professional. I thought I only had to have my 100-year-old slate shingle roof repaired. It turned out I was very wrong, unfortunately. But I knew exactly who I needed to call. I had to have my roof patched when I moved in, around 2000. It was Roland Slate Services. And for dealing with slate repair that company is known as the only place to go because you get great service, quality materials, and by the way, nice employees to do the work. My estimator, Denis, took some pictures that had me stunned in the back of the roof which couldn't be seen from the ground. That part of the roof had no shading and some of those shingles had turned white and orange!! Denis prepared several estimates for me, but strongly recommened I not use slate shingles, for several reasons, including the cost. I got a roof made out of a material that looks like slate, isn't, and has a 50 year (at least) lifespan. The work was done and it looks terrific. I'm extremely happy with them. So happy that I am now having the company do an estimate from them to replace my stucco (with a cheaper material that looks like stucco) and I need some serious brick work. Roland is completely trustworthy, has a great reputation here in Baltimore - which is thoroughly deserved. They aren't cheap. But they also aren't overly expensive. You get what you pay for and with my house, I want the best. I give them an A and definitely reommend if you need work done on the outside of your house, call them up and get an estimate. Roland Slate first started working in my roof when I lived in Rodgers Forge in a small townhouse. The roof really was slate, original to the house, in fact, and the two previous roofing companies that serviced it were constantly trying to get me to replace it. Interestingly enough, their visits typically resulted in leakage during the winter months. Enter Roland Slate - committed to helping slate roof owners keep their rooves and maintain them. Roland Slate's high caliber of service meant absolutely no leaks in or out of season. They were also diligent about keeping my costs low. Flash forward a few years, and we purchased another house in the area. This time the roof was asphalt shingle and on its last legs. It wasn't until we realized that even the underlayment was deteriorating that we replaced the roof. Roland Slate did a spectacular job - architectural shingles that will probably a few decades. My roof has slate from 1941, shingle from a later renovation, lots of valleys, angles, and two chimneys. Parts of it had been untouched for at least 40 years. It needed serious work. Roland Slate Service is the best. They are responsive and highly professional, starting with Kimberly, a project manager who took my first phone call to inquire about an estimate. John, one of the owners, and Ed, one of the sales persons, came to my house, spent about 30 minutes on the roof, took tons of pictures, and used them to explain in detail what needed to be done. Ed did the subsequent contract proposal, explained it to me clearly, and made the changes I requested. He worked with me to accommodate my scheduling needs. Randy who led project implementation, Rolando, and the other guys who came were great - polite, friendly, neat, professional, hardworking. They posted pics of their progress and, now, the completed work on a customer portal for me to see and have as a visual record. We've used Roland Slate on two occasions to maintain the roof on our 1930s Cape Cod home. The first instance (in 2019) involved a complete re-roofing. The Roland Slate representative was personable, candid, and factual regarding the state of our roof and patiently walked us through three possible options, and their costs, for our consideration. The Roland Slate crew that installed the new roof was first rate; they were on time, experienced, and did a phenomenal job of cleaning up the mess. We continue to be pleased with the quality of Roland Slate's work and materials. In July 2025, based on our earlier favorable experience, we asked that Roland Slate assess the status of chimney flashing that appeared to be loose. The Roland Slate assessor found that the flashing and under-laying brickwork appeared to have been damaged by a lightning strike the previous month. The Roland Slate crew assigned to repair the flashing and chimney were courteous, experienced, and professional. We are so happy we found Roland Slate to replace the built-in gutters and shingle roofing on our 1901 row home. We had called company after company and were told "we don't do built in gutters!"-- something we found odd for businesses who advertised that they worked in the city. Roland Slate came out right away to do an estimate, went over our options, and revised the scope of work based on what we could afford to do while still fully replacing the gutter and roof and not simply throwing a bandaid on it. We were also pleased that scaffolding was considered a must have and respect that Roland Slate prioritized doing the job safely and correctly. After getting our contract signed we were able to schedule much sooner than originally anticipated. The work team was wonderful and efficient. They arrived right at 8 am both days and had a large enough crew to get the job done in just two days. The only complaint I could make would be the lead time on when the job was scheduled and when the job was performed. I was informed of the time frame involved ahead of time so it didn't come as a surprise. Also there was a lot of snowy weather in the weeks leading up to the repair. We'd noticed a small leak near a bay window for an upstairs bedroom. The mitigation for the problem was to replace the flashing over the window. The salesman who did the initial inspection was easy to work with and gave us several options in terms of correcting the issue and doing general slate replacement. Because of cost constraints, we chose to have the flashing fixed on both our bay windows and have them come back out on another day to do a general replacement of cracked tiles. The workman showed up early in the morning and completed the job while we were at work. So far things look good. We plan to have them come out in the spring to deal with the cracked tiles. read more

We called Roland Slate once we found a leak in our roof after a big rain storm hit the area. They came out quickly to do an estimate and check the extent of the damage very quickly considering how many requests where being made. The estimator provided great information on what the issues were on the slate roof, how they would fix them and provided two options to fixing a gutter issue we identified. Between the time of the first call, scheduling the estimates and confirming the work order, Roland Slate was attentive and communicative throughout the process. The price point for how quickly the job was scheduled and performed was great. The job was completed in less than a day, the crew cleaned up exceptionally well and the information provided to us as new home owners was very helpful. I used Roland slate for 3 projects. I had a tree hit my house and needed an expert repair company to truly asses the damage to my slate roof. Roland slate did just that. They went above and beyond to ensure all remaining slates were in good condition and installed correct. Second project was the flashing around my chimney. I have an 100yo home and the flashing was rough. They replaced the flashing in 1 day and it's BEAUTIFUL!! My last project was my front office flat roof. It too was very old, in rough shape. They came quickly to do an assesment of the roof and showed a detailed estimate of what was needed with no hidden fees. Although they had a busy and full schedule to do the full repair at that moment, they were able to do a quick patch to keep the roof from leaking more. The advance team assessing the needs and providing the estimate were competent and polite, and addressed our need for a quick fix before the next thunderstorm hit. They then did a complete replacement of that roof in a very quick and thorough job. The materials were high quality, as was the work. I've had Roland Slate repair and maintain my slate roof since we moved into our house five years ago. The previous owners had not maintained the roof and loose shingles were constantly sliding off! Roland fixed the existing slate issues and just put a new flat roof on the back porch, put in new copper flashing around a dormer, and put flashing around the sewer pipes. They did a great job and their workers are always professional, on time, and leave my yard clean. All their repairs have held up over time, and I'm confident these will too. My house is almost 90 years old now. Every day, I wake up and look at the slate roof, wondering why some of the slates are chipped and why some have lost their color. I also noticed little pipes sticking out of the top and started to wonder about their purpose. That's when I decided to call Roland Slate for help. They replaced the pipes, which were plumber vents, and some of the old slates. Roland Slate informed me that the old slates were absorbing water, and I needed new ones.
